Indian businesses and services in Detroit, United States

Hamtramck, a small city almost entirely surrounded by Detroit, has long been home to most of Michigan's Bangladeshi community, and the streets around Conant Street, part of which was given the honorary name Bangladesh Avenue in 2008, are lined with Bangladeshi grocers, restaurants and businesses, alongside the city's Yemeni community and its older Polish heritage. Eid prayers here and in the suburbs bring large congregations.

Many Indian families, by contrast, live in the northern and western suburbs, often working in information technology, including for car-industry suppliers, and in medicine. Troy, Novi, Farmington Hills, Canton and Sterling Heights all have sizeable Indian communities, and their plazas hold the region's Indian grocers, sweet shops and restaurants. These suburbs are far apart, so it pays to search by area. For temples, the Bharatiya Temple of Metropolitan Detroit in Troy and the Sri Venkateswara Temple and Cultural Center in Novi, opened in 2013, are two of the main Hindu centres, and gurdwaras, Jain temples and mosques serve communities across Oakland, Wayne and Macomb counties.

Michigan winters are long and snowy, so most community events run indoors, in temples and rented halls, from November to March. Navratri garba draws big crowds in the autumn, and Diwali is celebrated at temples and community events. Metro Detroit is a driving region with limited transit between suburbs, so a car is close to essential.
