Indian businesses and services in New York, United States
Queens is where much of New York's South Asian life happens, and each of its hubs has its own character. In Jackson Heights, 74th Street just off Roosevelt Avenue is packed with sari and jewellery shops, sweet counters and grocers, and a Bangladeshi stretch around 73rd Street has grown up beside it; the 7, E, F, M and R trains all stop at the 74th StreetβRoosevelt Avenue station. Richmond Hill, further south-east, is the centre of the Indo-Caribbean community, Guyanese and Trinidadian families whose roti shops, mandirs and masjids line Liberty Avenue under the elevated A train, and the neighbourhood is also home to the city's largest Sikh community. Out at the Nassau border, Bellerose, along Hillside Avenue, has a large Indian American population.
The Hindu Temple Society of North America, the Ganesh temple on Bowne Street in Flushing, was consecrated in 1977 and is described as the second-oldest Hindu temple in the country built by Indian immigrants. In Brooklyn, Coney Island Avenue in Midwood has a long-standing Pakistani community, and Kensington a substantial Bangladeshi one.
Each spring the Phagwah parade, Richmond Hill's Holi celebration, moves through the neighbourhood, and in August the India Day Parade runs down Madison Avenue in Manhattan. Holi, and with it the Phagwah parade, follows the Hindu lunar calendar, so it lands in late February or March depending on the year. Weekends in Jackson Heights and on Liberty Avenue are crowded, and the subway beats driving.
