San Jose, Santa Clara, Sunnyvale and Milpitas form the South Bay core of Silicon Valley, and the technology industry has drawn a large Indian community here, many of them engineers who arrived on work visas and stayed. Rather than gathering in one district, South Asian grocers, restaurants and sweet shops cluster in suburban shopping centres, with a notable concentration along El Camino Real in Sunnyvale and Santa Clara. Telugu, Tamil, Kannada, Gujarati, Punjabi and Bengali are all commonly heard, and many restaurants specialise in one regional cuisine rather than a generic menu.

On Gurdwara Avenue in the Evergreen district, the Gurdwara Sahib of San Jose is one of the largest gurdwaras in the United States and serves langar to all visitors. The Sunnyvale Hindu Temple and Community Center and a number of other mandirs, as well as mosques serving Pakistani and other Muslim families, are spread across the valley, with longer programmes at weekends.

Navratri garba, Durga Puja, Onam, Pongal and Diwali are all celebrated by regional associations, often in rented halls and school auditoriums, so venues change from year to year.
