What Guru Nanak Jayanti is
Guru Nanak Gurpurab is the most important date in the Sikh calendar. The days before it are marked by an unbroken 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, and the day itself by kirtan, prayer, and langar — the free community kitchen that feeds everyone who comes, regardless of faith.
Visitors are welcome at every gurdwara: cover your head, remove your shoes, and eat. Where the community is large enough there is a nagar kirtan, a procession through the town behind the Guru Granth Sahib.
Guru Nanak Jayanti in Belgium
Belgium has a Sikh community of several thousand, concentrated around Sint-Truiden and the Limburg fruit farms, with gurdwaras there, in Vilvoorde near Brussels, and in Ghent. Sint-Truiden holds a nagar kirtan through the town.
Guru Nanak Jayanti in the Netherlands
Gurdwaras in Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague keep the Gurpurab; Amsterdam’s Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha holds the largest gathering.
If it is your first one abroad
- A scarf or bandana is provided at the door if you have nothing to cover your head with.
- Langar is vegetarian and free; sit on the floor in a row and accept what is served.
