What Guru Nanak Jayanti is
The birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, kept at every gurdwara with kirtan, a nagar kirtan procession and langar for all.
Guru Nanak Gurpurab is the most important date in the Sikh calendar. The days before it are marked by an unbroken 48-hour reading of the Guru Granth Sahib, and the day itself by kirtan, prayer, and langar β the free community kitchen that feeds everyone who comes, regardless of faith.
If it is your first one in Germany
- A scarf or bandana is provided at the door if you have nothing to cover your head with.
- Langar is vegetarian and free; sit on the floor in a row and accept what is served.
