What Navratri & Garba is

Sharad Navratri honours Durga over nine nights, ending in Dussehra (Vijayadashami) on the tenth day. Gujarati communities dance Garba and Dandiya Raas every night; Bengalis keep the last four days as Durga Puja; South Indian homes set up golu displays of dolls; in the north the Ramlila is performed and Ravana’s effigy burnt on Dussehra.

Outside India the dance is what travels. Garba nights are ticketed evenings with a live singer or DJ, a dress code of chaniya choli and kurta, and dandiya sticks for sale at the door; Durga Puja pandals are set up by the Bengali associations and welcome everyone for darshan and bhog.

Navratri & Garba in Belgium

Leuven’s Garba Dandiya Night in Heverlee has run for years; Brussels and Antwerp hold theirs on the same fortnight, and the Bengali associations set up Durga Puja pandals in Brussels and Antwerp.

Navratri & Garba in the Netherlands

Garba runs in Amstelveen, Eindhoven and the polder towns around Utrecht; The Hague’s Hindustani temples keep the full nine nights; Durga Puja is celebrated by several Bengali associations, the largest in the Amsterdam and Utrecht areas.

  • Wear something you can spin in and shoes you can dance in for three hours; sticks are usually sold at the venue.
  • Learn two basic Garba steps from a video beforehand and someone will teach you the rest on the night.
  • Durga Puja pandals welcome visitors for darshan and bhog (a free meal) — arrive before the evening aarti.
