Festival of colours
Holi 2027
Colour, water and spring. In northern Europe the Holi parties are outdoor, ticketed and usually a few weeks after the date — because March is cold.

What Holi is
Holi is the spring full-moon festival: a bonfire the night before (Holika Dahan) and a morning of throwing coloured powder and water at everyone in reach. It is the least formal of the big festivals and the easiest to invite friends of any background to.
Abroad it has to wait for weather. Associations and student groups run Holi events in parks and on campuses from late March to May, with organic gulal, a DJ and a hose; restaurants and bars host indoor “Holi nights” closer to the actual date. Bring clothes you are prepared to lose.
Holi in Belgium
Brussels, Leuven, Ghent and Antwerp all have outdoor Holi events between late March and May, most run by the student associations and ticketed.
Holi in the Netherlands
The largest Holi parties are in Amsterdam and The Hague, several of them commercial festivals that draw a mostly non-Indian crowd; the community’s own are in Amstelveen and Eindhoven.
If it is your first one abroad
- Oil your hair and skin beforehand and the colour washes out; old white clothes show it best.
- Only organic, skin-safe gulal is sold at community events — do not bring your own from an unknown source.
- Most events are family-friendly in the afternoon and turn into a party after dark.
