What Holi is

Colour, water and spring. In northern Europe the Holi parties are outdoor, ticketed and usually a few weeks after the date — because March is cold.

Holi is the spring full-moon festival: a bonfire the night before (Holika Dahan) and a morning of throwing coloured powder and water at everyone in reach. It is the least formal of the big festivals and the easiest to invite friends of any background to.

If it is your first one in the Netherlands

Oil your hair and skin beforehand and the colour washes out; old white clothes show it best.
Only organic, skin-safe gulal is sold at community events — do not bring your own from an unknown source.
Most events are family-friendly in the afternoon and turn into a party after dark.
