What Navratri & Garba is

Nine nights for the goddess and, abroad, the best-attended dance events of the year: Garba and Dandiya Raas nights in school halls and sports centres.

Sharad Navratri honours Durga over nine nights, ending in Dussehra (Vijayadashami) on the tenth day. Gujarati communities dance Garba and Dandiya Raas every night; Bengalis keep the last four days as Durga Puja; South Indian homes set up golu displays of dolls; in the north the Ramlila is performed and Ravana’s effigy burnt on Dussehra.
