Indian community events in Canada

Canadaโ€™s Indian community is about 1.9 million strong and growing faster than anywhere else in the West โ€” most of it in the Greater Toronto Area (Brampton, Mississauga and Scarborough), Metro Vancouver (Surrey above all), Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Ottawa and Montreal. The calendar is Punjabi and Gujarati before anything else: Vaisakhi in April (Surreyโ€™s parade is the largest outside India), garba season every October, Diwali melas and Bandi Chhor Divas at the gurdwaras, Punjabi and Bollywood concerts, Durga Puja, and the comedy tours that play Toronto and Vancouver every year. Prices below are in Canadian dollars; events are in English, Punjabi, Hindi or Gujarati, and in Montreal often in French too.

Questions people ask

When is Diwali in Canada in 2026?
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. It is not a statutory holiday, so the melas, temple celebrations and association dinners are held on the weekends around it โ€” Brampton, Mississauga and Surrey hold the largest. Every one posted to the community is listed below with its own date.
Where is the biggest Vaisakhi celebration in Canada?
Surrey, British Columbia: its Vaisakhi parade, held each April, is the largest outside India and draws hundreds of thousands. Toronto, Brampton, Calgary and Edmonton hold their own nagar kirtans the same month.
Where is Little India in Toronto?
The Gerrard India Bazaar on Gerrard Street East, between Coxwell and Greenwood โ€” the oldest South Asian market in North America. Most of the community now lives in Brampton, Mississauga and Scarborough, which is where the larger events are.
