Indian community events in Australia

Australia’s Indian community is close to a million strong and the fastest-growing large migrant group in the country, with Melbourne first β€” the west around Werribee and Tarneit, the south-east around Dandenong and Clayton β€” then western Sydney around Parramatta and Harris Park, Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide. Diwali lands in the southern spring: Federation Square in Melbourne and Parramatta Park in Sydney hold the big melas, Navratri garba fills the sports halls in October, the Bengali associations hold Durga Puja and the Telugu and Tamil associations their own festivals, and touring Bollywood and comedy acts play every capital. Prices below are in Australian dollars; almost everything is in English, with Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati, Telugu or Tamil on stage.

Questions people ask

When is Diwali in Australia in 2026?
Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, in the Australian spring. It is not a public holiday, so the melas, temple festivals and association dinners are spread across the weekends around it β€” Melbourne’s Federation Square and Sydney’s Parramatta Park hold the largest. Every one posted to the community is listed below with its own date and city.
Where are the biggest Indian communities in Australia?
Melbourne first β€” Wyndham in the west (Werribee, Tarneit, Truganina, Point Cook) and the south-east (Dandenong, Clayton, Casey) β€” then western Sydney (Parramatta, Harris Park, Blacktown and the Hills), Brisbane and its southern suburbs, Perth and Adelaide. Each has its own page here when its events are posted.
Where is Little India in Australia?
Harris Park in western Sydney, around Wigram Street next to Parramatta, is the best known: sweet shops, sari houses and restaurants, and the Deepavali fair in Parramatta Park beside it. Dandenong’s Foster Street precinct is Melbourne’s.
