Indian businesses and services in Sacramento, United States

Sacramento's South Asian story begins well before the tech era. Punjabi Sikh farmers settled in the Sacramento Valley early in the twentieth century, and their descendants remain a major presence in the farming towns to the north, above all Yuba City, roughly an hour's drive away. Yuba City's annual Sikh parade and Nagar Kirtan, held in early November, is one of the largest Sikh gatherings outside India.

In the capital region itself, the community is more mixed and more spread out. Families with roots in Fiji, for whom Sacramento County is one of the main centres in the United States, live alongside Punjabi families, newer arrivals from across India, and engineers working for the technology employers around Folsom and Roseville. Elk Grove, Natomas, Roseville, Folsom and the suburbs south of the city all have Indian grocery stores and restaurants, usually in suburban shopping centres rather than on a single high street.

Gurdwaras and Hindu temples are found across the metro. Expect to drive between areas. The Yuba City festival usually falls on the first weekend of November, occasionally starting in the last days of October, while Diwali and Holi land on different Gregorian dates from one year to the next; confirm the exact date with the organisers before travelling, as roads and parking around the gurdwara fill early.
