Indian businesses and services in Washington DC, United States

Northern Virginia and the Maryland suburbs, rather than the District itself, are where much of Washington's South Asian community lives. In Virginia, Fairfax and Loudoun counties, with towns such as Herndon, Chantilly, Centreville, Ashburn and Sterling, have large Indian populations, and their plazas carry most of the region's Indian grocers and restaurants. In Maryland, Montgomery County, especially Gaithersburg, Germantown and Rockville, has its own concentration.

The Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Lanham, Maryland, built in South Indian style and completed in 2002, is one of the largest Hindu temples on the East Coast, and the Durga Temple in Fairfax Station, inaugurated in 1999, serves many Northern Virginia families. Gurdwaras and mosques serve the Sikh, Pakistani, Bangladeshi and other Muslim communities across both states.

The District has its own South Asian landmarks. The embassies of India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and Nepal are all in Washington, and a statue of Mahatma Gandhi stands outside the Indian embassy on Massachusetts Avenue near Dupont Circle. The Metro Silver Line, extended to Dulles Airport and Ashburn in 2022, has made the Loudoun suburbs easier to reach without a car, though most temples and plazas are still best reached by driving.
