Indian businesses and services in Austin, United States

Austin's Indian and South Asian community has grown alongside the city's technology industry, and many families live in the northern suburbs. Round Rock and Cedar Park in particular have Indian grocery stores, sweet shops and restaurants, usually in shopping centres along the main highways. Students and researchers at the University of Texas add a younger, more transient layer closer to the centre.

For worship, the Austin Hindu Temple and Community Center in east Austin is a focal point for many families, and Radha Madhav Dham, a large Hindu temple and ashram south of the city in Hays County, draws visitors from across Central Texas, particularly for Holi and Janmashtami. There are also gurdwaras, Jain and Swaminarayan congregations, and mosques with South Asian members across the northern suburbs.

Because the community is suburban, plan on driving: public transport is thin outside the core, and weekend afternoons are when grocery stores and temple canteens are at their busiest. Diwali, Navratri and Holi are marked with public melas, garba nights and colour celebrations organised by temples and cultural associations. For a bigger concentration of shops, Houston's Mahatma Gandhi District along Hillcroft Avenue is a few hours' drive away and a common weekend trip before major festivals.
