Indian businesses and services in Philadelphia, United States

Several distinct clusters, rather than one central district, make up South Asian Philadelphia. University City, around the University of Pennsylvania and Drexel, has a cluster of Indian restaurants catering to students and hospital staff. Just over the city line, the tiny borough of Millbourne has been described as having the most concentrated South Asian population in the United States, with Punjabi Sikh, Indian and Bangladeshi families, and neighbouring Upper Darby has a sizeable Asian community too. Indian, Bengali and Punjabi grocers and restaurants line the stretch along Market Street towards the 69th Street Transportation Center, where the elevated Market–Frankford line ends.

Further out, the Main Line and Chester County suburbs, including King of Prussia, Malvern and Exton, are home to many Indian professionals, and across the river in New Jersey, Cherry Hill has a fast-growing Asian American community of its own. Temples, gurdwaras and mosques are spread across these areas: the Philadelphia Sikh Society's gurdwara is in Millbourne, and Hindu temples serve families in the suburbs to the north and west.

SEPTA connects the city with Upper Darby and many suburbs, but most temples and suburban grocers are easiest to reach by car. Navratri, Durga Puja and Diwali are marked by community associations in rented halls across the region. Weekends are the busiest time at the larger grocers. This page also takes in the suburbs on the New Jersey side of the Delaware.
