Indians in Sacramento: the 2026 guide to Elk Grove, Folsom, Natomas, Roseville, Davis and Yuba City
About 64,600 people who identify as Asian Indian live in the Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom metro area — 64,580 in the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, a sample estimate — and another 13,219 in the Yuba City metro to the north, where they are 7% of residents (9,595 in Yuba City itself, 13.8% of the city). The newer families, working for the state, Intel, the hospitals and the University of California at Davis, live in Folsom (9,150, 10.9% of residents), Elk Grove, Natomas, Roseville and Rancho Cordova, while the Punjabi Sikh farming communities of Yuba City, Live Oak and Stockton go back to the early 1900s; the Stockton gurdwara, founded in 1912, is the first in the United States. The main places of worship are the Sacramento Sikh Society on Bradshaw Road, the gurdwara on Evergreen Avenue in West Sacramento, the Sikh Temple on Tierra Buena Road in Yuba City, ISKCON on Arden Way and the BAPS mandir at Mather, and there is no single Indian shopping street, so grocers and restaurants are spread through Natomas, Sacramento and the suburbs. The practical fact to know first is the rent gap: a one-bedroom averages $1,787 in Elk Grove and $1,650 in Folsom, against $2,696 in Fremont (Zumper, October 2026).
About 4.86 million people who identify as Asian Indian (alone or with another group) live in the US: 4,856,473 in the 2019–2023 American Community Survey. That is a national figure, not one for Sacramento alone. Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2019–2023, table B02018
1.The Sacramento region at a glance
Correct or addContents ↑Sacramento is California’s capital and the centre of a region that holds the state government’s payroll, a University of California campus, Intel’s Folsom campus and two older Punjabi Sikh farming settlements, one to the north around Yuba City and one to the south at Stockton. It is a smaller Indian community than the Bay Area’s and draws on different employers: state government, hospitals and a university, beside a farming and trucking community that has been in the valley for a century. About 65,000 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or in combination with another group, live in the Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom metropolitan area: 64,580 (margin of error ±3,347) in the US Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey (ACS), table B02018, counted across El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties. That is 2.7% of the metro’s 2,426,388 residents and roughly an eighth of the 546,880 the same survey counts for the combined San Francisco Bay Area. The Yuba City metro area, which is Sutter and Yuba counties to the north, has 13,219 (±1,239), or 7.2% of its 183,364 residents.
Three notes on what those figures count. They are sample estimates, each with a margin of error, and the margins are wide for small towns. The survey counts people who describe themselves as Asian Indian, whatever their passport or birthplace; it puts India-born residents at 35,328 in the Sacramento metro and 7,333 in the Yuba City metro, which is a different measure, because it counts people born in India of any background and leaves out those born here. It also tabulates people who wrote in only “Sikh” on a line of their own — 3,715 in the Sacramento metro and 1,299 in the Yuba City metro — so the Sikh community is larger than the Asian Indian line alone suggests. This site’s other American city guides mostly quote the earlier 2019–2023 release; the site’s population list has no Sacramento row, so this page uses the newer 2020–2024 release and says so each time.

Rules that apply across the country have their own pages on this site, and this one links to them instead of restating them: jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passport renewal and sending money to India. For the country as a whole read Indians in the USA; for the nearest large Indian region, the Bay Area, which the Capitol Corridor train reaches, read Indians in the Bay Area. This page is about Sacramento, Placer, Yolo and El Dorado counties, the Yuba–Sutter area and the Stockton–Lodi side of San Joaquin County.
2.The community, and where it lives
Correct or addContents ↑The Indian presence in the Sacramento Valley is more than a century old, and it is Punjabi first. The California Legislature’s 2014 resolution on Sikh history records that Sikhs first entered California in 1899 through Angel Island, that by 1910 pioneers who had worked on the railroads and in lumber mills were farming in the Sacramento, San Joaquin and Imperial valleys, and that in 1912 Professor Teja Singh of the Pacific Coast Khalso Diwan Society founded the Sikh Temple of Stockton, the first gurdwara in the United States. The legal history that kept the numbers small until 1965 — the 1923 ruling that a Punjabi Sikh could not be naturalised, and the Luce–Celler Act of 1946 that reopened it — is in the national guide. Around Yuba City the story is easiest to follow in one life: the Los Angeles Times obituary of Didar Singh Bains, the “Peach King”, records that he arrived in 1958, bought a 10-acre parcel at Yuba City in 1962 and by 1978 was the largest independent peach farmer in California, and that in 1980 he proposed the annual Sikh parade the town still holds. The newer community of engineers, doctors, state employees and students is tied to the region’s other employers, among them Intel, which has been at Folsom since 1984.
| Year | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1899 | Sikhs first enter California, through Angel Island (California Legislature, 2014) |
| By 1910 | Sikh pioneers move from railroads and lumber mills into farming in the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys |
| 1912 | Sikh Temple of Stockton founded; the Stockton Gurdwara describes itself as the first gurdwara in the United States |
| 1946 | Luce–Celler Act gives Indian immigrants the right to naturalise |
| 1962 | Didar Singh Bains buys 10 acres in Yuba City and begins growing peaches |
| 1980 | Annual Sikh parade in Yuba City proposed; the 2026 parade is the 47th |
| 1984 | Intel arrives at Folsom, where it has been ever since |
| 2005 | India Day in Sacramento begins, the origin of the Indian Association of Sacramento |
The numbers
The 2020–2024 survey gives these counts of people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or in combination, with the share of each place’s residents. The margins of error are large for the small places — Live Oak’s 1,415 is ±739 — so read the order rather than the last digit.
| Place | Asian Indian (2020–2024) | Share of residents |
|---|---|---|
| Sacramento County | 46,350 (±2,787) | 2.9% |

| El Dorado County | 2,120 (±582) | 1.1% |
| Sutter County | 12,186 (±1,039) | 12.3% |
| Yuba County | 1,033 (±607) | 1.2% |

| Live Oak | 1,415 (±739) | 15.1% |
Where Indians actually live
- Natomas and the city of Sacramento — the survey counts Natomas inside the city’s 16,075. Natomas has several of the Indian grocers and restaurants described below, its own school district, and an Indian association of its own, the Natomas Group. Midtown, East Sacramento and Land Park, nearer downtown, appear in the neighbourhood rents below.
- Folsom — the highest share of any town in the Sacramento metro, 10.9%, and the home of the Intel campus on Prairie City Road, on the Highway 50 corridor beside El Dorado Hills (1,728). The Gold Line light rail ends at Historic Folsom, and the Consulate General held its January 2026 consular camp here.
- Elk Grove — the largest suburb south of the city, 6,600 Indian residents, family homes, and the Elk Grove Unified School District.
- Roseville, Rocklin and Granite Bay — Placer County’s technology and hospital employers, and the Roseville Joint Union High School District; Placer County has 9,860 Asian Indians.
- Rancho Cordova and Mather — the BAPS mandir at Mather, the Rancho Cordova Diwali by the Suvidha International Foundation, VSP Vision and Aerojet Rocketdyne as employers, and lower rents than the Placer and Elk Grove suburbs.
- West Sacramento and Davis — Yolo County, with the gurdwara on Evergreen Avenue in West Sacramento and the University of California at Davis next to a small, student-heavy Indian community (2,701 in Davis).
- Yuba City and Live Oak — the Sikh heartland. Indians are 13.8% of Yuba City and 15.1% of Live Oak, on the survey’s counts, and Sutter County as a whole is 12.3%.
- Stockton and Lodi — Stockton’s gurdwara and Shiva-Vishnu Temple, and a Lodi where the survey’s largest South Asian group is Pakistani (3,296) rather than Indian (1,450). San Joaquin County’s other large counts — Tracy 9,935, Mountain House 9,477, Manteca 6,320 and Lathrop 5,041 — are towns this page does not cover.
Languages and origins
No survey splits the region’s Indians by state or mother tongue, and the language table the Census Bureau publishes for these metros folds every Indian language into “other”, so any claim that one language dominates would be a guess. What the institutions show is range. The gurdwaras and the Bradshaw Gurmat School teach Gurbani and Punjabi; the Indian Association of Sacramento lists the California Telugu Samithi, the Gujarati Samaj of Sacramento, the Kannada Sangha, the Marathi Mandal and others as its member organisations; and its India Day each August, which its About page says draws at least 2,000 people, is where the regional organisations present their programmes. The temples are across the traditions: Vedanta, ISKCON, Swaminarayan and Sikh.
3.Your first two weeks in the Sacramento region
Correct or addContents ↑The federal paperwork — the Social Security number, banking without a credit history, tax withholding and the care of your visa status — is set out in the jobs guide and the cost-of-living guide. What follows is the local sequence, and the biggest practical difference from the Bay Area is that most days involve a car.
- A room or a short stay, not a lease. Landlords ask for proof of income, a credit check and sometimes a guarantor, and on day one you have none of them. A room in a shared house in Natomas, Rancho Cordova, Elk Grove or Folsom, or a month in a furnished flat, covers the fortnight. Pay nothing for a room you have not seen, whoever recommended it.
- The Social Security number. Apply as soon as your status allows; the licence, the lease and a second bank account all go more smoothly once it arrives.
- A bank account and a phone line. A passport, visa papers and an address open an account at most banks, and a prepaid SIM will cover the first week. The cost of sending money home is compared in sending money to India.
- A car, in most places. Light rail serves the Blue and Gold line corridors, but Elk Grove, Roseville, Rocklin and Yuba City have none, so plan on a car there. If you will ride, SacRT’s Connect Card, a contactless bank card or phone (Tap2Ride) and the Transit Connect app pay the fare, and the older ZipPass app has been retired.
- A California licence, soon. The DMV’s rule for someone holding a licence from another country is that you apply as a new driver: the application, your Social Security number, proof of identity and address, a vision test, the knowledge test and a driving test, with proof of insurance. Driving tests are by appointment, so book early.
- Health cover. An employer plan starts on your first day or on the first of the following month, so ask which. If you have none, read health before the 1 November enrolment window.
- Know your city, county and school district. Utilities differ by address, so ask the landlord which company supplies electricity and gas, and whether water, rubbish and internet are in the rent. The city decides whether a local rent cap applies and the school district decides the school.
- Plan for the summer. Sacramento averages 14 days a year at 100°F or higher and 76 at 90°F or higher, so check that a rental has air conditioning that works and ask for last summer’s electricity bills.
- The consulate, when you need it. Passport and OCI files go through VFS Global rather than a consulate counter, and attestations move to the eSEWA portal on 1 November; the consulate section explains both before you book anything.
- A Sunday at a gurdwara or mandir. A langar at the Sacramento Sikh Society or in West Sacramento, the Sunday feast at ISKCON on Arden Way or a puja at the Mather mandir tends to produce a tax preparer’s, a dentist’s and a landlord’s number quicker than a web search; the groups on Namaste Community (below) can do it without your knowing anyone first.
4.Neighbourhoods and renting: 2026 rents by area, the Bay Area gap and the rent cap
Correct or addContents ↑Rent in every part of the Sacramento region is well below the Bay Area’s, but the gap depends on where you stand. Zumper’s city pages, which calculate average advertised rents on a rolling 30-day basis and were last updated on 22 October 2026, give the figures below; its National Rent Report for September 2026 puts Sacramento itself at a median $1,500 for a one-bedroom (down 2.0% in a year) and $1,840 for a two-bedroom (down 1.6%), against national medians of $1,518 and $1,903, and it is the only Sacramento-area city in that report. Beside them is the official survey: the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 median gross rent, the middle rent paid by every renter household in the town. In this region it is higher than the advertised one-bedroom figure, because the survey counts everyone who rents, including families in three-bedroom houses.
| Area | Who lives there | Advertised 1-bed / 2-bed (Zumper) | Median gross rent paid (ACS 2020–2024) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sacramento (city) | Professionals, state workers, Natomas families | $1,475 / $1,847 | $1,779 |
| Elk Grove | Families; Elk Grove Unified | $1,787 / $2,225 | $2,262 |
| Folsom | Intel and hospital families; Folsom Cordova Unified | $1,650 / $2,300 | $2,352 |
| Roseville | Families; Placer County employers | $1,700 / $2,150 | $2,142 |
| Rocklin | Families; Rocklin Unified | $1,699 / $2,300 | $2,258 |
| Rancho Cordova | Near VSP, Aerojet and the Mather mandir | $1,395 / $1,750 | $1,787 |
| West Sacramento | Gurdwara on Evergreen Avenue; Yolo County | $1,495 / $2,037 | $1,665 |
| Davis | University of California students and staff | $1,661 / $2,082 | $2,187 |
| Yuba City | Sikh heartland; farming and trucking families | $1,197 / $1,460 | $1,454 |
| Stockton | Stockton gurdwara; San Joaquin County | $1,297 / $1,685 | $1,577 |
Zumper’s Sacramento page also lists average rents by neighbourhood without saying which unit size they are for: South Natomas $1,745, Midtown $1,795, Downtown $1,852, East Sacramento $1,895 and Land Park $2,086, with Old North Sacramento at $1,195. Treat them as a ranking, not a quote.
The Bay Area comparison
The comparison most readers want is with the Bay Area. Zumper’s city pages, as read on 22 October for the Bay Area guide, give a one-bedroom at $2,696 in Fremont, $3,248 in Sunnyvale, $2,799 in San Jose and $2,535 in Pleasanton, and a two-bedroom at $3,168, $4,130, $3,500 and $3,238. A one-bedroom in Elk Grove is $909 (34%) cheaper than in Fremont, one in Folsom is $885 (35%) cheaper than in Pleasanton, and a two-bedroom in Roseville is $1,980 (48%) cheaper than in Sunnyvale. Buying shows the same distance. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 median value of owner-occupied homes, which is the owners’ own estimate, is $755,200 in Folsom, $703,400 in Rocklin, $661,400 in Roseville, $630,100 in Elk Grove and $506,300 in Sacramento, against $1,403,800 in Fremont, $1,233,200 in San Jose and $1,801,800 in Sunnyvale. Median household incomes are lower too: $139,804 in Folsom and $125,924 in Elk Grove, against $181,506 in Fremont, or 77% and 69% of Fremont’s. Three readings. First, the school district is inside the rent in Folsom, Elk Grove, Roseville and Rocklin, as it is in the Bay Area. Second, the gap in the official survey is narrower than in the advertisements: median gross rent paid is $2,352 in Folsom against $2,933 in Fremont, only 20% lower, and $1,779 in Sacramento, 39% lower, because the survey counts every size of home and every lease. Quote the advertised figures to compare a flat you can rent today, and the survey to compare what neighbours pay. Third, Yuba City and Stockton are the cheapest places in the region to rent by a wide margin, at the price of distance from the main employers.
How renting works in California
- The deposit. Since 1 July 2024 the most a California landlord can hold is one month’s rent, counting every deposit-type charge together. A small landlord — an individual, or a company owned by individuals, with no more than two properties and four units between them — may ask for two months. After you move out, the deposit or an itemised statement of deductions is due within 21 days.
- The state rent cap. The Tenant Protection Act (AB 1482) limits most rent rises to 5% plus the local change in the Consumer Price Index, or 10%, whichever is lower, with at most two rises in 12 months. It does not cover housing less than 15 years old or some owner-occupied duplexes. In Elk Grove, Folsom, Roseville, Rocklin, Davis, West Sacramento and Yuba City this is the cap unless the city has a stricter rule, so ask in writing.
- The City of Sacramento has its own rule. Its Tenant Protection Program caps annual rises at 5% plus the change in the California Consumer Price Index; for the year from 1 July 2026 the maximum is 8.6% (the Department of Industrial Relations put April’s index at 3.6%), a rent cannot be raised more than once in 12 months, and a landlord who breaks either limit faces administrative penalties of up to $25,000. Whether a given unit is covered depends on the building, so the program’s office, at 916-808-8121 or tpp@cityofsacramento.org, is the place to ask.
- No credit history. Landlords commonly ask for income at a multiple of the rent, often three times, or for a guarantor, and the first lease is the hardest to get. The cost-of-living guide describes the ways round it.
Scams to expect
Warning signs are a price far below the neighbours’, an owner who is out of the country and wants money before you view, a WhatsApp “landlord” who asks for a transfer to hold a room, a photo set copied from a genuine agent’s listing, and a large landlord asking for two months’ deposit, which the law does not allow. Paying to see a flat is never legitimate, and a deposit should not go by gift card or to a person you have not met.
5.Getting around: SacRT, the Capitol Corridor, the airport and the car
Correct or addContents ↑Outside downtown the Sacramento region is built for the car, and the buses and light rail are for particular commutes. SacRT is the regional agency, and its fares page shows the following for October 2026, with the note that all fares are subject to change.
| Fare (October 2026) | Price |
|---|---|
| Single ride, ages 19–61 | $2.50; $0.25 for a transfer to a bus; on light rail a ticket is valid for 90 minutes |
| Day pass | $7.00 |
| Semi-monthly pass / monthly pass | $50.00 / $100.00 |
| Discount fare (62+ or disabled) | $1.25 single; $3.50 day; $25 semi-monthly sticker; $50 monthly sticker |
| Students, TK–12 | $1.25 single; $3.50 day; $10 semi-monthly; $20 monthly; many students ride free under RydeFreeRT, so ask the school district |
| How to pay | Connect Card, Tap2Ride on buses and SacRT GO with a contactless card or phone, or the Transit Connect app; the ZipPass app has been retired |
The lines that matter
- Light rail has three lines. The Blue Line runs from Watt/I-80 in the north-west to Cosumnes River College in the south, every 15 minutes in the day; the Gold Line runs from Sacramento Valley Station to Historic Folsom, every 30 minutes east of Sunrise, with a second track near Glenn station allowing 15-minute service on part of the line; and the Green Line is a weekday link from 7th and Richards to 13th Street. Wikipedia’s account of the system counts about 22,900 weekday boardings in the second quarter of 2026. A Green Line extension to the airport has a completed draft environmental report but no funding.
- The Capitol Corridor train runs from Auburn through Rocklin, Roseville, Sacramento and Davis to Oakland, Fremont, Santa Clara and San Jose, 168 miles in all; Wikipedia gives an average journey time of three and a quarter hours for the whole route. Its fares rose on 1 September 2026, including the Tap2Ride fares, and the ten-ride ticket is now valid for 60 days; use the fare calculator on the Capitol Corridor’s website rather than an old chart.
- Buses. SacRT runs the bus network in and around Sacramento, and some suburbs run local services of their own, so start with SacRT’s website and then the city’s.
The airport, and flying home
Sacramento International (SMF) is 10.5 miles north-west of downtown and counted 13.9 million passengers in 2025. Wikipedia’s airline table lists no scheduled flights from SMF to India or anywhere in Asia; the only international routes are to Mexico and Canada. Most people flying to Delhi or Mumbai therefore connect through a US hub or drive to San Francisco, where the Bay Area guide records the Air India service from SFO and the other routings. Check the airline for your date.
Driving
In Elk Grove, Roseville, Rocklin and Yuba City a car is close to essential once there are children, and in the summer heat a car with working air conditioning is not a luxury. The cost-of-living guide covers what a car and its first-year insurance cost. If you plan to drive a truck for a living, read the trucking section under work first, because the licensing rules changed in 2026.
6.Work and employers: the state, Intel, the hospitals, the farms and the trucks
Correct or addContents ↑State government is the most visible employer in Sacramento. The California Department of Human Resources counts roughly 245,900 state employees across the state, as CalMatters reported on 20 July 2026, and the Legislature and many state agencies are based in Sacramento. After the state come the health systems, the University of California at Davis, a technology and chip sector centred on Folsom and Roseville, insurance and finance in Rancho Cordova, and, to the north and south, farming, food processing and trucking. The state Employment Development Department’s 2026 list of major employers, which names employers without headcounts and includes some headquarters whose staff are elsewhere, shows the pattern.
| County | Employers named (EDD major-employers list, 2026) |
|---|---|
| Sacramento | Aerojet Rocketdyne and VSP Vision (Rancho Cordova), Intel (Folsom), Franklin Templeton (Rancho Cordova), Golden 1 Credit Union, SMUD, State Compensation Insurance Fund, Mercy General Hospital, the Sacramento Bee, an Apple distribution centre (Elk Grove), California State University Sacramento and American River College |
| Placer | Hewlett Packard Enterprise (Roseville), Oracle (Rocklin), Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Union Pacific Railroad (Roseville), Sierra College, the City of Roseville and Thunder Valley Casino Resort |
| Yolo | The University of California, Davis, Sutter Davis Hospital, Beckman Coulter (West Sacramento), Capital Express Lines and FedEx Freight (West Sacramento) and Mariani Nut Co. (Winters) |
| Sutter | Sunsweet Growers (Yuba City), Valley Fine Foods, Sutter-Yuba Behavioral Health and the Yuba City schools |
State government
The CalCareers FAQ says that generally only a few state jobs require US citizenship, but that applicants must hold the work visas and meet the federal immigration requirements, and that state examinations are given in English only. It does not say whether a department will sponsor a visa; that is for the hiring department to answer, and the job bulletin is where to look. Applicants take an examination for each classification they want. Since 1 July 2026 about 108,000 of the state’s roughly 245,900 employees have had to work in the office four days a week under Governor Newsom’s March 2025 order, with exemptions case by case, for example for employees who live 50 miles or more from their worksite; the largest union has filed an unfair-practice complaint, so the rule may change. Ask a prospective department whether the position is covered before you rent near the office.
Intel at Folsom
Intel has been at its Folsom campus since 1984, and Folsom Times describes it as historically the city’s largest private employer. Intel announced in November 2024 that it would sell the campus at 1900 Prairie City Road and lease part of it back. On 2 September 2026 it confirmed that it would not go ahead with the sale and partial leaseback, saying in a statement to Folsom Times that it would “remain committed to the Folsom campus” and keep the property. The campus has seven buildings with about 1.67 million square feet of space on 161.78 acres, nearly 310,000 square feet of laboratories and 53,000 square feet of data-centre space. The Real Deal reported on 3 September that it has room for 10,000 employees and houses fewer than 4,000 after rounds of layoffs over the past three years. So the position in October 2026 is that Intel is staying, owns the site, and employs far fewer people there than it did; anyone whose visa depends on an Intel job should read the layoff section of the jobs guide. Hewlett Packard Enterprise in Roseville and Oracle in Rocklin are the other technology names on the state’s list.
Hospitals and the university
The health systems are among the region’s largest employers. UC Davis Health at 4301 X Street in Sacramento describes its emergency departments as the region’s only level I adult and pediatric trauma centres and counted 19,144 employees in the region in 2023, according to an economic-impact study its page cites. Kaiser Permanente has hospitals in Roseville (1600 Eureka Road) and Sacramento (2025 Morse Avenue), and Sutter Health runs Sutter Roseville Medical Center, Sutter Davis Hospital and a Sacramento hospital. A university is cap-exempt for the H-1B, so UC Davis can file in any month, as the jobs guide explains. Nurses and doctors should read that guide’s healthcare section before accepting an offer.
Farming and food processing
The Yuba–Sutter economy still turns on the land. Sutter County’s 2025 Crop and Livestock Report puts the county’s agricultural production at $744,236,000, up 8.9% on 2024, led by rice ($220.2 million), walnuts ($115.6 million), processing tomatoes ($78.7 million), almonds ($68.2 million) and clingstone peaches ($65.4 million from 7,840 acres), with dried prunes on another 12,200 bearing acres ($59.6 million). Sunsweet Growers, the dried-fruit processor, is on the state’s list of Sutter County employers. Peaches are the crop most tied to the community’s history: Didar Singh Bains, the Yuba City farmer whose life is told in the community section, built his business on them.
Trucking, and what changed in 2026
Trucking is the other trade associated with the valley’s Punjabi community. CalMatters reported on 31 January 2026 that about 35% of California’s commercial drivers are believed to be Sikh, according to an industry advocacy group (an estimate, not an official count), and that a federal audit questioned about 17,000 California licences held by immigrants. The federal rule is what a newcomer needs to know. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration published a final rule on 13 February 2026, in force from 16 March 2026, that limits non-domiciled commercial licences and permits for foreign-domiciled applicants to people with specific employment-based nonimmigrant statuses. The D.C. Circuit refused to stay the rule on 5 May 2026, existing non-domiciled licences stay valid until they expire but are not renewable unless the driver qualifies, and oral argument in the challenge was set for September 2026; we found no report of a decision. If you are on a student, work or other visa, ask the DMV in writing whether you can hold a commercial licence before you pay for truck training, and read the rule itself in the Federal Register.
Minimum wage, visas and consultancies
California’s statutory minimum wage is $16.90 an hour in 2026, and no Sacramento-region city appears on the UC Berkeley Labor Center’s July 2026 list of local ordinances, against $18.05 in Fremont and $19.50 in Sunnyvale. California’s income tax tops out at 13.3% (the take-home pay table shows what a salary leaves). The visa rules are national: the H-1B lottery has been weighted by wage level since the 2027 season, the $100,000 payment proclaimed in 2025 and extended in September 2026 has been blocked by two federal courts and is on appeal, and a layoff starts a 60-day clock that DHS has proposed to remove; the jobs guide carries the detail. The region has staffing firms and IT consultancies like any other, and “pay for a guaranteed job and a visa” is the oldest fraud; check any firm in the H-1B section on consultancies and the scams section.
7.What the Sacramento region costs in 2026
Correct or addContents ↑A clean way to see the difference between the Sacramento region and the Bay Area is to put the counties side by side in one source. The MIT Living Wage Calculator, updated on 15 February 2026, estimates the hourly wage a worker needs for a minimum-needs budget with no savings, using each county’s rents, child-care prices, food, transport and tax. It is not a comfortable budget, and it uses a different method from the Numbeo figures on the Bay Area page or the budgets in the national guide, so compare the counties with one another rather than with those.
| County (MIT, 15 February 2026) | One adult, no children (hourly) | Two adults working, two children (each, hourly) | Income needed before tax | Housing a year | Child care a year |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sutter (Yuba City) | $24.96 | $30.50 | $126,864 | $19,751 | $25,588 |
| Sacramento | $28.13 | $33.63 | $139,883 | $26,431 | $28,792 |
| Alameda (Fremont) | $32.31 | $44.65 | $185,729 | $35,098 | $46,566 |
| Santa Clara (San Jose, Sunnyvale) | $38.00 | $48.41 | $201,397 | $42,011 | $46,772 |
For a household with two working adults and two children, the required income in Sacramento County is $61,514 (31%) lower than in Santa Clara County and $45,846 (25%) lower than in Alameda County, and the housing line is about $15,600 lower than in Santa Clara. The biggest single gap after housing is child care: $28,792 a year in Sacramento County against $46,772 in Santa Clara County. On the same budget a single adult in Sacramento County needs $28.13 an hour, against California’s minimum wage of $16.90.
What the budget leaves out
The MIT budget is built from basic categories and has no named line for flights home, remittances to parents or a family wedding in India, which for many households decide whether anything is saved. The national cost-of-living guide prices a family of four city by city and explains the take-home arithmetic, including the 13.3% top rate of California income tax. The lines that tend to surprise newcomers are the car and its insurance, child care, dental work, which is often insured separately, and summer electricity, because a Sacramento July means running air conditioning for weeks.
Where the Indian saving is
Groceries are the usual place: atta, dal, rice and spices bought in bulk from an Indian grocer generally cost much less than the same staples in small packets from a general supermarket. Sending money home is cheaper by bank transfer than by cash; the remittance guide explains why since the 2026 remittance tax.
8.Health: employer plans, Covered California, the 2027 changes and the hospitals
Correct or addContents ↑Health care in the United States is paid for through insurance, so the first question after arriving is what cover you have. Most H-1B and L-1 workers and other professionals get a plan from their employer, with a monthly premium deducted from pay and a deductible to meet before the plan pays much; students are normally enrolled in their university’s plan. The cost-of-living guide prices family plans and emergency visits and explains how to insure visiting parents. Pick an in-network primary-care doctor within the first month: many plans require that doctor’s referral for a specialist, and an urgent-care clinic costs far less than an emergency room for anything short of an emergency.
Who provides care
Four names recur: Kaiser Permanente, which is both insurer and provider and has hospitals in Roseville and Sacramento; Sutter Health, with hospitals in Sacramento, Roseville and Davis; UC Davis Medical Center, at 4301 X Street in Sacramento, which serves a 33-county region and calls its emergency departments the region’s only level I adult and pediatric trauma centres; and Mercy General Hospital in Sacramento, which is on the state’s list of major employers. Which system you can use depends on your plan, so look at the plan’s network before you choose a doctor or a home.
If you are not covered: Covered California
Covered California is the state’s marketplace for individual plans (800-300-1506; certified enrolment assistors help for free). Its July 2026 briefing for partners gives open enrolment as 1 November to 31 January, and a move or a loss of cover can open a separate window. For 2027 it announced on 21 July 2026 a preliminary weighted average rise of 9.9% in premiums, against a preliminary national median of 14%, after the enhanced federal tax credits ended with 2025.
The change that matters most to newcomers comes from Washington. Under the 2025 federal law H.R. 1, some lawfully present immigrants lose access to premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions from 2027, and Covered California’s fact sheet names work visas and student visas among them. Holders can still buy a plan, at full price; green-card holders keep the help. Anyone planning a green-card application should take the fact sheet’s advice and speak to an immigration lawyer before accepting financial assistance.
Emergencies, and where to call
- 911 for an emergency; 988 for the suicide and crisis line; 211 for local services and help with food, housing and utilities.
- A hospital emergency department cannot turn away an emergency because you cannot pay, but the bill follows later; many hospitals run financial-assistance schemes, so ask the billing office before paying.
- The Health Consumer Alliance (888-804-3536) gives free advice on insurance problems.
The scams
Callers who say they are from the IRS, immigration or the Indian consulate and demand gift cards or cryptocurrency are fraudsters; hang up. The “digital arrest” fraud that targets families in India is described in the remittance guide.
9.Schools, districts, admissions, Diwali on the calendar and childcare
Correct or addContents ↑In California your address decides your school. The region has many school districts, each with its own boundaries, and the district is a large part of why families pay what they do in Folsom, Elk Grove, Roseville and Rocklin. This page does not rank schools. The state publishes test results, graduation and attendance for every district and school on the California School Dashboard, and the commercial sites that give schools a score out of ten use the same data in different ways, so read the state’s figures for the specific school before you rent. State school tables also report “Asian” as one group, so no official table shows the Indian share of a school; the city shares in the community section above are the closest measure.
| District | What the district’s page or the record says | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Elk Grove Unified | 69 schools and 63,157 students in 2020–21, serving Elk Grove, Florin, Franklin, Rancho Murieta and Vineyard, most of Wilton and parts of Mather, Parkway, Rancho Cordova and Sacramento (Wikipedia); its website translates into Punjabi, Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu and Tamil among others | The district’s “SchoolSite Locator (Boundaries)” shows which school an address is zoned for |
| Natomas Unified | 21 schools and 16,664 students; “nearly 60 spoken languages” (district website) | A separate district from Sacramento City Unified; check the school locator for a Natomas address |
| Folsom Cordova Unified | District office in Rancho Cordova; the district’s directory lists 22 elementary, four middle, three high and six alternative schools, including Mather Heights Elementary | The district publishes attendance boundaries, an overflow process and interdistrict transfers |
| San Juan Unified | 12 high schools, nine middle schools, eight K–8 schools and 33 elementary schools; district office in Carmichael | Its schools include Orangevale Open K–8 and the Gold River Discovery Center; its “Find Your School (School Boundaries)” page shows which school an address is zoned for |
| Sacramento City Unified | About 74 school entries; open enrolment for kindergarten to grade 8, a transitional-kindergarten lottery and specialty high-school programmes | Dual-immersion programmes are in Spanish, Mandarin and Hmong |
| Roseville Joint Union High School District | Antelope, Granite Bay, Oakmont, Roseville, West Park and Woodcreek high schools | The board has approved new attendance boundaries from the 2027–28 school year |
| Davis Joint Unified | Nine elementary schools, four junior highs, and Davis Senior, Da Vinci and Martin Luther King Jr. high schools | Davis has the highest median home value of the places in this guide, $866,100 in the 2020–2024 survey |
| Yuba City Unified | Yuba City High School, River Valley High School and Albert Powell High School, among 17 sites | Its website translates into Hindi and Punjabi |
A district checks where you live: the national guide notes that enrolment usually asks for a lease and a utility bill. California’s 1 September birthday cut-off applies to kindergarten (five by that date) and to transitional kindergarten (four), so a child born late in the year may start a year later than in India; ask the district for its current rule before planning a start date.
Diwali on the calendar
Assembly Bill 268, signed on 7 October 2025 and in force since 1 January 2026, allows California’s K–12 schools and community colleges to close for Diwali and lets state and school employees take the day off. It is permissive, not mandatory, so each district sets its own calendar. This year Diwali is Sunday 8 November and no school day is lost; the question returns in 2027, when it falls on Friday 29 October, and the district calendar will show the answer.
Weekend schools and culture
The Sacramento Sikh Society’s Bradshaw Gurmat School teaches Gurbani, Gurmat and Punjabi, following the curriculum developed at the Guru Nanak Khalsa School in San Jose; the Sikh Temple in West Sacramento lists a school on its website; ISKCON Sacramento runs a children’s Bhakti class on Sundays; and the Gujarati, Marathi, Kannada and Telugu associations named below are the first place to ask about language and culture classes.
Childcare and universities
Childcare is the line that surprises families. The MIT Living Wage Calculator puts it at $28,792 a year in Sacramento County for a household with two children, against $46,772 in Santa Clara County, and the cost-of-living guide explains why two children in daycare can outweigh the rent difference. For students, the University of California at Davis, California State University Sacramento and the community colleges, American River College and Sierra College among them, serve the region; the rules for F-1 status are in the jobs guide.
10.Indian groceries, sweets and where to eat
Correct or addContents ↑Indian groceries and restaurants are found across the Sacramento region, but not on one street. The chain Patel Brothers, whose store list showed a single California store, in Santa Clara, when the Bay Area guide read it on 22 October, has no Sacramento store, so the choice is among independent shops and you will drive to them. Namaste Community’s directory, read on 23 October 2026, lists 25 Indian businesses in Sacramento: 15 restaurants, eight grocers and two places of worship, most of them from public map data rather than the businesses themselves, which is why the details below say where each one comes from.
Restaurants whose own websites we opened
- Everest Curry, 1728 Broadway, Sacramento 95818 — Nepali and Indian cooking, with a weekday lunch buffet from 11:00 to 14:30 and a vegan thali, open until 21:30 Sunday to Thursday and 22:30 Friday and Saturday (its website, 23 October 2026).
- Chaat Bistro, 8128 Delta Shores Circle South, Suite 140, Sacramento 95832 — a family-owned restaurant with vegetarian and non-vegetarian dishes, dine-in, take-out and catering, open until 21:00 Sunday to Thursday and 21:30 Friday and Saturday.
- Chaat Kafe, 2721 Del Paso Road, Sacramento 95835 — chaat, pakoras and biryani, with catering, open 11:00 to 21:00 (21:30 Friday and Saturday).
- India Oven — a regional chain with branches at 3511 Truxel Road in Natomas, 1186 Roseville Parkway in Roseville, 7423 Laguna Boulevard in Elk Grove, 6105 Sunrise Vista Drive in Citrus Heights and 4540 Post Street in El Dorado Hills, according to its locations page.
- Star of India, 1538 Poole Boulevard, Suite W, in Yuba City — restaurant and catering, with Indian sweets on the menu.
The grocers
- Natomas — Namaste Community’s directory lists Natraj Indian Foods at 4301 Truxel Road, Indian Groceries at 2000 Club Center Drive and Desi Market and Grill at 2087 Arena Boulevard. The directory shows them as last checked in November 2025 and March 2025.
- North of the American River — the directory lists India Market at 5203 Elkhorn Boulevard, last checked October 2025.
- Tahoe Park — Cottage Mart at 2130 51st Street, an older listing, last checked in May 2024.
- Yuba City — we could not confirm a grocer or sweet shop from a business website or from this site’s directory, so none is named; ask at the gurdwara or in the groups below.
We found no grocer’s own website, so the addresses above are from the directory and should be confirmed by phone or on a map before a long drive. If one has closed, or one is missing, tell us through the directory; the live listings below show what the site holds for this area.
What the choice looks like
With no single Indian shopping street, the grocers named above are in Natomas and north Sacramento, and the restaurants run from Curtis Park and South Sacramento to Natomas and the suburbs. Nothing in this section is a ranking: it is what we could confirm on 23 October 2026, and the list is thinner than the community. The correction we most want is yours, so add the shop that is missing and review the one you use.

11.Temples, gurdwaras and other places of worship
Correct or addContents ↑The region’s temples reflect its history. The gurdwaras, in Stockton, Yuba City, West Sacramento and Sacramento, are the oldest; the Hindu temples are fewer and smaller, as the temples guide notes for the Central Valley. Almost all are reached by car. Timetables change, so confirm with the temple before you go. The US temples guide lists the Central Valley places in one table.
| Place | Address | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Sacramento Sikh Society Gurudwara | 7676 Bradshaw Road, Sacramento | Its website posts a live calendar of paath, Sukhmani Sahib and Anand Karaj programmes in the Main Hall, with the daily hukamnama; the Bradshaw Gurmat School teaches Gurbani and Punjabi |
| Gurdwara Sahib West Sacramento (Sikh Temple of Sacramento) | 2301 Evergreen Avenue, West Sacramento CA 95691 | Its website calls itself a place of worship for the majority of the Sikh population in the greater Sacramento area, “always open”, with a new langar hall completed around 2010, wedding packages and a school |
| Sikh Temple Gurdwara, Yuba City | 2468 Tierra Buena Road, Yuba City | The start and end of the Yuba City parade; its 2026 programme is at sikhtempleyubacity.com |
| Stockton Gurdwara (Pacific Coast Khalsa Diwan Society) | 1930 Sikh Temple Street, Stockton CA 95206; (209) 625-7500 | “The first Gurdwara Sahib in the United States” (its website), founded in 1912; a Vaisakhi nagar kirtan every April; the langar hall is open to all |
| BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir | 10548 Armstrong Avenue, Mather CA 95655 | Its Diwali Annakut and Chopda Pujan are free but ticketed (see the festival section) |
| ISKCON Sacramento | 2424 Arden Way, Building 400, Sacramento CA 95825 | Open Saturday 06:30–09:00 and Sunday 10:00–14:00 while the interior is being renovated; Sunday feast 11:00–14:00 |
| Vedanta Society of Sacramento | 1337 Mission Avenue, Carmichael CA 95608; (916) 489-5137 | A centre of the Ramakrishna Order with resident swamis, Sunday lectures, a monastery and a Shankara shrine |
| Shiva-Vishnu Temple of Stockton | 4715 Foppiano Lane, Stockton CA 95212 | Pan-Hindu; open Monday–Friday 06:00–12:00 and 17:00–20:00, Saturday and Sunday 06:00–20:00; its Shardiya Navaratri programme ran 11–19 October 2026 |
Gurdwaras and the Sikh heartland
Every gurdwara welcomes visitors of any faith: cover your head, leave your shoes outside, and expect to be offered langar, the free vegetarian meal served after the Sunday diwan. The Yuba City gurdwara, which the temples guide records as built in 1969 on a 30-acre site, is where the Sikh parade starts and finishes each year. The Stockton Gurdwara is the oldest in the country: the California Legislature’s 2014 resolution names Professor Teja Singh of the Pacific Coast Khalso Diwan Society as its founder in 1912.
Hindu temples, and the BAPS mandir
The Hindu places of worship are spread across the region. The BAPS mandir at Mather is the Swaminarayan temple; ISKCON is on Arden Way in Sacramento; the Vedanta Society is in Carmichael; and the Shiva-Vishnu Temple, with its weekly pujas and a Navaratri programme, is in Stockton. Search results also name a Laxmi Narayan Mandir on Elder Creek Road in Sacramento, but we found only a social-media page for it and so do not list it. The temples guide says BAPS near Sacramento had no confirmed address; BAPS Sacramento’s own Eventbrite listings give the one above. Because the temple communities are small, they are the quickest route to a pandit for a house puja or a naming ceremony: ask at the temple, and ask in the groups below.

12.Associations, culture and classes
Correct or addContents ↑Indian life in the region is organised by language, religion and town, and the associations are where festivals, classes and help happen. Most are run by volunteers and change committees every year, so the surest contact is the association’s own website or the person who took you last year.
The Indian Association of Sacramento
The Indian Association of Sacramento (IAS) is a registered non-profit that grew out of India Day, a celebration held around 15 August in the region since 2005. Its About page says India Day draws at least 2,000 people, presents cultural programmes in all the languages of India, and gives its proceeds to a charity. IAS also runs a 5K run in the first week of April, takes part in Republic Day at the California Senate and in the Veterans Day parade in Folsom, and was the partner for the Consulate General’s consular camp at Folsom on 25 January 2026. Its member organisations include Ankur, the California Telugu Samithi, Ekal Vidyalay Sacramento, the Gujarati Samaj of Sacramento, the Kannada Sangha of Sacramento, the Marathi Mandal of Sacramento and the Natomas Group, which are the places to start for a language, a festival group or a school.
The Suvidha International Foundation
Suvidha International Foundation, a Sacramento-based non-profit, organises the free Diwali celebration in Rancho Cordova with the City of Rancho Cordova, which sponsors it in part through the city’s community funds. Its 2026 event is on Sunday 25 October (details in the festival section below).
Religious and cultural institutions
- The gurdwaras run the Punjabi and Gurmat schools and the langar kitchens, and the Sacramento Sikh Society’s calendar shows sehaj paath, Sukhmani Sahib and Anand Karaj programmes through the autumn.
- ISKCON Sacramento offers a Saturday-morning Srimad Bhagavatam study, a Friday evening sangha and a children’s Bhakti class on Sundays.
- The Vedanta Society of Sacramento hosts Sunday lectures, a monthly newsletter and online courses.
- The BAPS mandir holds the weekly and festival programmes of the Swaminarayan community.
Culture, sport and the arts
The IAS holds indoor, outdoor and children’s sports competitions a few weeks before India Day, and its 5K run is in the first week of April. For dance, music and cricket, ask other parents and the associations before you pay for a term, and watch the events listings for what is on.
13.The festival year in the Sacramento region, 2026
Correct or addContents ↑The region holds the festivals of the whole subcontinent, in temples, gurdwaras, parks and rented halls, and the public events fall on the weekends around the date. The festival dates below come from the Consulate General of India’s holiday list for 2026; the events beside them come from the organisers’ own pages.
| Festival | When (2026) | Where / what |
|---|---|---|
| Holi | Wednesday 4 March | Date from the Consulate General’s list; community and temple programmes vary, so see the events listings |
| Vaisakhi | April | The Stockton Gurdwara’s nagar kirtan is held every April, according to its website |
| India Day | Around 15 August | The Indian Association of Sacramento’s India Day; Independence Day itself is Saturday 15 August |
| Shardiya Navaratri and Dussehra | Navaratri programme 11–19 October at the Stockton temple; Dussehra Tuesday 20 October | The Shiva-Vishnu Temple of Stockton’s programme; other temples and community groups hold their own |
| Suvidha Diwali, Rancho Cordova | Sunday 25 October, 2:00–8:00 pm | Stone Creek Park, 3625 Spoto Drive; free |
| Yuba City Nagar Kirtan | Saturday 31 October open house; Sunday 1 November, parade 11 am | The Sikh Temple Gurdwara, 2468 Tierra Buena Road |
| BAPS Diwali and Annakut, Mather | Sunday 1 November, 12:00–17:00 | BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, 10548 Armstrong Avenue; free, ticket required |
| Diwali | Sunday 8 November | Lakshmi puja at home and in the mandirs; the BAPS Chopda Pujan and Sharda Pujan at 4 pm |
| Guru Nanak Gurpurab | Tuesday 24 November | The gurdwaras |
The Sikh parade at Yuba City
The Yuba City Nagar Kirtan, the Sikh parade, is the region’s main annual gathering of the Sikh community, held on the first weekend of November. The 2026 programme on the Sikh Temple’s website lists an open house and reception on Saturday 31 October and the parade on Sunday 1 November at 11 am, with every event at the gurdwara, 2468 Tierra Buena Road. The parade has been held since 1980, and the 2026 edition is the 47th. The Los Angeles Times said in 2022 that the parade draws about 100,000, and CBS Sacramento reported about 200,000 over the three days in 2025, without saying who made the estimate; the temples guide records the gurdwara as the start and end of the route. Free langar is served throughout the weekend, and food stands sell Punjabi dishes and chai. Check Sutter County’s website for the route, road closures and parking. The Legislature’s 2014 resolution on Sikh history designated November “California Sikh American Awareness and Appreciation Month”.
Diwali, explained
The public events are spread over the weekends around the date. The Suvidha celebration in Rancho Cordova on Sunday 25 October has performances, food stalls, vendors, children’s games and an aerial fireworks show; the organiser’s page gives 2:00 to 8:00 pm and no fireworks time, and the first 200 families receive a sweet box. The Diwali in Sacramento page lists these and the rest as organisers post them. At Mather, BAPS Sacramento holds its Diwali and Annakut celebration on Sunday 1 November from noon to 5 pm, with Annakut — a display of vegetarian dishes offered to God — rangoli, food stalls, exhibits and aarti every hour from noon; admission is free but every person needs a ticket and a time slot, and the mandir closes to the public at 5:30 pm. On Sunday 8 November the same mandir holds the Chopda Pujan for adults and the Sharda Pujan for children, starting at 4 pm, with arti at 6 pm and mahaprasad at 6:20 pm, again free with a ticket. Dates and venues are the organisers’; the site’s Sacramento events calendar collects the Diwali programmes it knows of.
In 2026 Diwali falls on a Sunday, so California’s new Diwali law, which lets schools and community colleges close and lets state and school employees take the day, costs nobody a weekday this year; see schools. The Consulate General in San Francisco is closed on Diwali and on Guru Nanak’s birthday.

14.WhatsApp groups, and finding your people in Sacramento on Namaste Community
Correct or addContents ↑Much of the everyday organising of Indian life in the region happens in WhatsApp groups: who has a room, which Elk Grove dentist takes new patients, where the garba is. Expect groups run by apartment complexes, employers, temples, the language associations and school parents. A web page cannot replace them and does not try to.
What the groups are good at, and what they are not
A question posted in the evening is often answered the same night, by people who live a few streets away. The cost is access and noise: you usually need an introduction to be added, invitation links go stale, every member can see your phone number, and a group of strangers is where the “training fee for a guaranteed job” and “send the deposit and I will hold the room” frauds circulate. The answers also scroll away, so the same questions about the deposit, the school boundary and the enrolment window return every month. And a group has no idea where you live, so a room in Yuba City and a garba in Folsom reach you with equal weight.
What Namaste Community adds
Namaste Community puts the area’s groups, events and businesses on one site, next to the same pages for other cities.
- Groups. The app’s local groups are moderated and tied to a place, so the conversation is about where you live. On 23 October 2026 the site listed no Sacramento group yet (Sacramento groups); if you start one it will appear below for the next person to find.
- Events. Diwali programmes, garba nights and temple festivals are collected in the Sacramento events calendar, and the nearby ones appear under the festival section above.
- A directory. Grocers, restaurants, temples and services are listed in the US directory, with reviews from people who have used them.
- Ask. A question about a school boundary in Elk Grove, a tax preparer in Folsom or a Punjabi class in Yuba City can be put once to the app’s Ask section, where members answer it and the answer stays for the next person; anonymous mode is available if you prefer not to post under your name.
Your first week
- Join the general group for your area, then one for your language or neighbourhood, and read it for a week before posting.
- Go to something in person in your first fortnight: a Sunday langar, a Diwali evening in Rancho Cordova, a temple puja. Three names you know are worth more than a hundred group members.
- Say which city you live in when you ask a question, because the rent, tax and school answers change between Natomas, Folsom, Roseville and Yuba City.
- When you have settled, leave a review or an answer for whoever arrives next, from Hyderabad, Ludhiana or Kathmandu.
15.Afghan, Pakistani, Nepali, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan neighbours
Correct or addContents ↑The Indian community here shares the region with other South and Central Asians. The survey counts 27,869 people of Afghan origin in the Sacramento metro, a third of the 82,649 it counts in the whole of California, and Pakistani, Nepali, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi communities live in the same region. Everything here about rents, deposits, SacRT, Covered California, schools and scams applies to all of them equally; what differs is the embassy or consulate, the festival calendar and the shelf you shop from. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey (table B02018) gives these counts of people who identify with each group, alone or in combination; “Afghan” is the survey’s own line among Central Asian groups.
| Group (2020–2024) | Sacramento metro | Yuba City metro | Sacramento city | Stockton | Lodi |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Afghan | 27,869 | 1,558 | 4,750 | 241 | 179 |
| Pakistani | 10,102 | 1,136 | 4,178 | 3,107 | 3,296 |
| Nepalese | 2,321 | 0 | 725 | 24 | 38 |
| Sri Lankan | 983 | 0 | 494 | 0 | 0 |
| Bangladeshi | 812 | 0 | 158 | 89 | 0 |
Afghan
The metro’s 27,869 Afghan residents are the largest group in the table after Indian, and the survey counts them across the north and east of the city and in Elk Grove: 5,563 in Arden-Arcade, 4,750 in Sacramento itself, 3,683 in Elk Grove, 1,925 in Carmichael, 1,767 in North Highlands and 1,357 in West Sacramento. The festival calendar differs from the Indian one: Nowruz, in March, is the Afghan new year.
Pakistani, Nepali, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan
Pakistanis are the next-largest group: 10,102 in the Sacramento metro, 3,296 in Lodi, where they outnumber Indians, and 3,107 in Stockton. Nepalis are the third (2,321, with 514 in Woodland and 283 in Davis in the survey’s place counts), and the Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan communities are small enough that the survey’s margins are wide. The shared ground is wide too: the same schools, the same buses and light rail, and the same hospitals.
Where to find each other
For Dashain, Tihar, Eid, Nowruz, Tamil New Year and Pongal programmes, the community’s own associations and the groups on Namaste Community are the places to look, since each community’s dates differ from the Indian calendar. The consulate described below is for Indian citizens; other communities should check their own country’s embassy or consulate.

Correct or addContents ↑Consular services
The Consulate General of India in San Francisco is at 71 Stevenson Street, Suite 2200, San Francisco CA 94105, telephone +1 (415) 891-4080. Its contact page gives working hours of 8:45 am to 5:15 pm under the label “not for public”, so do not turn up expecting a counter, and says it is closed on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays. For immediate emergencies Indian nationals can reach it 24 hours a day on +1 415 483 6629 by call, text or WhatsApp, a number it asks people not to use for routine queries. Its jurisdiction, revised on 1 August 2025, is Northern and Central California — 48 counties, which include Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, Sutter, Yuba and San Joaquin — plus Colorado, Hawaii, Utah, Wyoming and Guam. The consulate’s 2026 holidays still to come are Diwali on Sunday 8 November, Guru Nanak’s birthday on Tuesday 24 November, Thanksgiving on Thursday 26 November and Christmas Day on Friday 25 December.
You will rarely need to go in person. Passport, OCI and renunciation files go through VFS Global, whose San Francisco centre is at 642 Harrison Street, Suite 200, with a second centre in San Jose that opened on 1 August 2025; the fees and the order of steps are national and are in the OCI card guide and the passport renewal guide. The Bay Area guide lists the consulate’s helplines and VFS numbers. Gifts and customs for the trip home are in what to take to India.
The consular camp at Folsom
We found no consular counter in Sacramento, but the Consulate General has held a camp in the region with the Indian Association of Sacramento. The latest was on Sunday 25 January 2026, from 10:00 to 15:00 at 705 Gold Lake Drive, Suite 150, in Folsom: passport, OCI and visa applicants registered on the VFS portal and brought a printout of the application, the payment receipt and the documents on the VFS checklist, and attestations were taken on a first-come basis. The consulate’s news page lists its 2026 camps as Folsom (25 January), Fresno (28 February), Lone Tree in Colorado (29 March) and South Jordan in Utah (7 June), with no Sacramento-area date since; watch the consulate’s news page and the VFS portal for the next one.
The new eSEWA rule from 1 November 2026
The Consulate General went live on the eSEWA portal on 11 June 2026 for death-related services and pension life certificates, and on 22 October announced that from 1 November 2026 twelve miscellaneous services will be provided only through eSEWA, including marriage registration, birth registration certificates, attestation of Indian and US documents and of powers of attorney, wills and affidavits, equivalency certificates for the tenth and twelfth classes, non-pension life certificates, NRI certificates, police clearance for foreign nationals, reissue of an international driving licence and the NORI certificate (Stage III). You register with an email address, upload documents, wait for the online scrutiny, and then either book a VFS appointment with the originals or send them by post through VFS. The notice warns that scrutiny does not guarantee issuance, because the originals must be checked. These are not passport or OCI applications.
Help lines
- 911 for police, fire and ambulance; 988 for the suicide and crisis line; 211 for local services.
- Covered California 800-300-1506 for insurance; the Health Consumer Alliance 888-804-3536 for free advice on insurance problems.
- The City of Sacramento’s Tenant Protection Program, 916-808-8121, for a rent rise above the cap; your city’s housing department or the county’s legal-aid service for a deposit that has not come back.
- The Consulate General emergency number above, for Indian nationals only.
Your status, in 2025–26
Immigration rules have shifted several times in 2025 and 2026, and mistakes now carry heavier costs. The jobs guide sets out the H-1B lottery, the $100,000 payment, the grace period after a layoff and the new student rules. In practice: keep every approval notice, I-20 and pay slip, track any unemployment days or grace period on a calendar, and treat a caller who threatens to cancel your visa unless you pay as a fraudster. The “digital arrest” and fake-officer scams are described in the remittance guide.
Safety
Everyday precautions apply as in any American city: keep nothing visible in a parked car, lock bicycles and take care on empty streets at night. Heat is the more regular risk: Sacramento averages 76 days a year at 90°F or higher and 14 at 100°F or higher, with a record of 116°F on 6 September 2022, and the Wikipedia climate account notes that in December and January dense tule fog can make driving hazardous. The city sits at the confluence of the Sacramento and American rivers and has a long flood history, so ask about flood insurance before buying. Places of worship are not exempt from hate crime: on the night of 24 September 2024 the BAPS mandir at Mather was defaced with anti-Hindu graffiti, the Consulate General in San Francisco asked the local authorities to act, and the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office treated it as a hate-crime investigation; we found no report of an arrest. If it happens to a place you worship, report it to the sheriff or police and to the consulate. The frauds most likely to reach a newcomer are fake rental listings, deposits sent before a viewing, “training fees” for jobs, and calls from people posing as the consulate, the police or immigration.
What to read next
The national rules on jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passports and remittances are in the guides linked above; Indians in the USA lists events, groups and businesses across the country, and the Bay Area guide covers Fremont, Sunnyvale and the South Bay.
Questions people ask
- How many Indians live in Sacramento?
- About 64,600 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Sacramento–Roseville–Folsom metro area (El Dorado, Placer, Sacramento and Yolo counties): 64,580 in the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, a sample estimate with a margin of error of ±3,347, or 2.7% of residents. The Yuba City metro (Sutter and Yuba counties) has 13,219, or 7.2%. The city of Sacramento itself counts 16,075, 3.0% of its residents.
- Where do most Indians live in the Sacramento area?
- In the city of Sacramento, including Natomas (16,075 in the 2020–2024 survey), in Folsom (9,150, 10.9% of residents), Elk Grove (6,600), Roseville (4,710) and Rancho Cordova (3,136), and, for the Punjabi Sikh community, in Yuba City (9,595, 13.8% of the city) and Live Oak (15.1%). Davis has 2,701 and West Sacramento 1,892. The margins of error are large for the smaller places.
- How much is rent in Sacramento in 2026, and how does it compare with the Bay Area?
- Zumper’s average one-bedroom rents on 22 October 2026 were $1,475 in Sacramento, $1,787 in Elk Grove, $1,650 in Folsom, $1,700 in Roseville and $1,197 in Yuba City, and its September 2026 report put Sacramento’s median at $1,500. A one-bedroom in Fremont averaged $2,696 and one in Sunnyvale $3,248, so Elk Grove is $909 cheaper than Fremont. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 median rent paid by all renters is $1,779 in Sacramento and $2,262 in Elk Grove.
- Is there a rent cap in Sacramento, and how much is the deposit?
- The City of Sacramento’s Tenant Protection Program limits rises to 5% plus the California Consumer Price Index, which is 8.6% for the year from 1 July 2026, once in 12 months; breaking it can bring penalties of up to $25,000. Elsewhere the state cap applies: 5% plus local inflation or 10%, whichever is lower. Since 1 July 2024 a deposit is limited to one month’s rent, or two for a small landlord, and must be returned or itemised within 21 days of your leaving.
- How much is SacRT light rail and bus in 2026?
- A single ride is $2.50 (valid for 90 minutes on light rail), a day pass $7.00, a semi-monthly pass $50 and a monthly pass $100; discount fares for people 62 and over or disabled are $1.25 a ride. Students in TK–12 pay $1.25 or ride free under RydeFreeRT. You pay with a Connect Card, a contactless card or phone, or the Transit Connect app. All fares are subject to change, and the Capitol Corridor train to the Bay Area raised its fares on 1 September 2026.
- Is Intel leaving Folsom?
- No, as of 23 October 2026. Intel announced in November 2024 that it would sell its Folsom campus at 1900 Prairie City Road and lease part of it back, but on 2 September 2026 it said it would not proceed and remains committed to the campus, a statement quoted by Folsom Times. The Real Deal reported that the campus has room for 10,000 employees and houses fewer than 4,000 after layoffs over the past three years.
- Which school districts do Indian families choose around Sacramento?
- Many choose by address: Elk Grove Unified in Elk Grove, Folsom Cordova Unified in Folsom and Rancho Cordova, Natomas Unified in Natomas, San Juan Unified (Carmichael and neighbouring communities), the Roseville Joint Union High School District in Placer County, Davis Joint Unified in Davis and Yuba City Unified in Yuba City. This guide does not rank schools: the state publishes results on the California School Dashboard, and no official table gives the Indian share of a school because the state records Asian as a single group.
- What are the main Hindu temples and gurdwaras in the Sacramento area?
- The Sacramento Sikh Society Gurudwara at 7676 Bradshaw Road; Gurdwara Sahib West Sacramento at 2301 Evergreen Avenue; the Sikh Temple Gurdwara at 2468 Tierra Buena Road, Yuba City; the Stockton Gurdwara at 1930 Sikh Temple Street, the first in the United States, founded in 1912; the BAPS Swaminarayan mandir at 10548 Armstrong Avenue, Mather; ISKCON Sacramento at 2424 Arden Way; the Vedanta Society at 1337 Mission Avenue, Carmichael; and the Shiva-Vishnu Temple of Stockton on Foppiano Lane.
- When is the Yuba City Nagar Kirtan in 2026?
- The Sikh Temple Gurdwara at 2468 Tierra Buena Road lists an open house and reception on Saturday 31 October 2026 and the Sikh parade on Sunday 1 November at 11 am. The parade has been held since 1980 and the 2026 edition is the 47th. Estimates of the crowd range from about 100,000 to 200,000 over the weekend; langar is free, and Sutter County’s website is the place to check the route, road closures and parking.
- When is Diwali in Sacramento in 2026, and is it a school holiday?
- Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. Suvidha International Foundation holds a free celebration at Stone Creek Park in Rancho Cordova on Sunday 25 October from 2:00 to 8:00 pm, and BAPS Sacramento holds its Annakut at the Mather mandir on Sunday 1 November from noon to 5 pm and a Chopda Pujan on 8 November from 4 pm. California’s Assembly Bill 268 lets schools and community colleges close for Diwali, but each district decides; in 2026 it falls on a Sunday, so no weekday is lost.
- Where is the Indian consulate for Sacramento, and where do I apply for a passport or OCI?
- Sacramento falls under the Consulate General of India in San Francisco (71 Stevenson Street, Suite 2200, +1 415 891-4080), whose jurisdiction covers 48 counties of Northern and Central California including Sacramento, Placer, El Dorado, Yolo, Sutter, Yuba and San Joaquin. Passport, OCI and renunciation files go through VFS Global in San Francisco or San Jose. The consulate held a camp in Folsom on 25 January 2026, and from 1 November 2026 attestations and other miscellaneous services go only through the eSEWA portal.
- Where can I buy Indian groceries in Sacramento?
- There is no single Indian shopping street. Namaste Community’s directory lists Natraj Indian Foods at 4301 Truxel Road, Indian Groceries at 2000 Club Center Drive and Desi Market and Grill at 2087 Arena Boulevard in Natomas, India Market at 5203 Elkhorn Boulevard and Cottage Mart at 2130 51st Street, from public map data last checked between May 2024 and November 2025, so confirm by phone. Everest Curry, Chaat Bistro, Chaat Kafe and India Oven have their own websites.
- Can I work for the State of California on a visa?
- Generally only a few state jobs require US citizenship, according to the CalCareers FAQ, but you must hold the work visas and meet the federal immigration requirements, state examinations are given in English only, and the FAQ does not say whether a department will sponsor a visa; ask the hiring department. A university such as UC Davis can file an H-1B petition in any month. About 108,000 state employees have worked in the office four days a week since 1 July 2026.
