Indians in Atlanta: the 2026 guide to Gwinnett, Duluth, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Cumming, Decatur and Midtown

About 167,000 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Roswell metro area — 167,342 in the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, 2.7% of residents — and nine in ten of them in five counties: Fulton (43,972), Forsyth (38,084), Gwinnett (32,477), Cobb (21,243) and DeKalb (17,309). They live in suburban arcs rather than one neighbourhood: Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Cumming along GA-400; Duluth, Suwanee, Lawrenceville and Norcross in Gwinnett; and Decatur, Emory and Midtown inside the Perimeter. The main temples are the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Lilburn, the Hindu Temple of Atlanta in Riverdale and the Shirdi Sai Temple in Suwanee, and Indian shopping runs from Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross to Patel Brothers in Decatur, Suwanee and Kennesaw. The practical fact is the car: MARTA rail costs $2.50 a ride but stops at North Springs and Doraville, a Georgia driving licence is due within 30 days of moving, and a landlord may not take more than two months’ rent as a deposit.

About 4.86 million people who identify as Asian Indian (alone or with another group) live in the US: 4,856,473 in the 2019–2023 American Community Survey. That is a national figure, not one for Atlanta alone. Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2019–2023, table B02018

1.Atlanta at a glance

Correct or addContents ↑

In the 2020 census table on Wikipedia, the Atlanta area ranked ninth among American combined statistical areas by Asian Indian population, and Georgia's count has grown about twelvefold since 1990. About 167,000 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or in combination with another group, live in the Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Roswell metro area: 167,342 in the US Census Bureau's 2020–2024 American Community Survey (ACS), with a margin of error of about 5,000 either way, or 2.7% of the metro's 6.26 million residents. Statewide the same survey counts 191,013 in Georgia, 1.7% of the state. The ACS is a sample, so every figure here is an estimate, and it asks about race and ethnicity rather than citizenship — the count includes American-born children and grandchildren as well as people who arrived on an H-1B or a student visa.

The shape matters more than the total. Among the places of 5,000 or more people that the survey covers, the highest Indian share in Georgia is Johns Creek's 14.0%, so there is no single Indian neighbourhood: the community is spread along three corridors — GA-400 north through Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Cumming, the Interstate 85 and Buford Highway side of Gwinnett County around Norcross, Duluth and Suwanee, and the streets around Decatur and Emory. The metro is built around the car, which makes the school district, the commute and the house the three decisions that define an Atlanta move.

The national rules — visas and the H-1B lottery, the Social Security number, federal tax, remittances, the OCI card and Indian passports — are in the site's US topic guides and are linked rather than repeated: jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passport renewal and sending money to India. This page covers what is specific to Atlanta.

2.The community, and where it lives

Correct or addContents ↑

Indian Atlanta is a recent community by the standards of New York or Chicago, and it grew in the same decades that Atlanta itself did. The census counted 13,926 Asian Indians in Georgia in 1990, 44,732 in 2000, 96,116 in 2010 and 165,895 in 2020 (the decennial counts as tabulated in Wikipedia's article on Indian Americans); the 2020–2024 ACS puts the state at 191,013. The Georgia Encyclopedia says immigration from India rose by 200 percent during the 1990s, making Indians the state's largest Asian group, and that most Georgia Hindus come from western India, mainly Gujarat. The mix has widened since: nationally, the community has moved from being mostly Gujarati and Punjabi to include many more families from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and the Telugu associations listed in the associations section reflect that shift.

The institutions date from the same period. The India American Cultural Association (IACA) was established in 1970 and launched its Festival of India in 1997; in August 2026 it held the 30th. The Hindu Temple of Atlanta was incorporated in 1984, took land in 1986 and held its first services in 1990. ISKCON's temple in Druid Hills dates from 1973. The BAPS mandir in Lilburn was inaugurated on 26 August 2007. Raksha, the Atlanta nonprofit for South Asian survivors of violence, was founded in 1995. The Consulate General of India serves the whole South-East from Glenridge Drive, with a VFS application centre in Sandy Springs.

City and place figures cover only the people inside those boundaries, and a great deal of Gwinnett and Forsyth is unincorporated: Cumming's city limits hold 904 Indian residents (10.7% of the city) and Suwanee's 919, while Forsyth County as a whole holds 38,084. The five counties together account for about 153,000 of the metro's 167,342 (the sum of their five estimates). The county figure is the number to trust, and small-place estimates carry wide margins.

Where Indians actually live

  • North Fulton: Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton. The highest Indian shares of any sizeable place in the state — about one resident in seven in Johns Creek and Alpharetta, one in eight in Milton — reached by GA-400 and Windward Parkway and served by Fulton County Schools. Median household income in Johns Creek was $160,093 and the median owner-occupied home $629,400 (2020–2024 ACS).
  • Forsyth County: Cumming and its subdivisions. 14.2% of the county, served by Forsyth County Schools, with a county median home value of $550,400 against $629,400 in Johns Creek. The Diwali Market on 1 November is in Cumming.
  • Gwinnett: Duluth, Suwanee, Lawrenceville, Norcross, Lilburn, Mountain Park and Peachtree Corners. South Asian shops and restaurants along Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross, the BAPS mandir in Lilburn, the Shirdi Sai Temple in Suwanee, the Jain Society and a gurdwara in Norcross, and the largest school district in Georgia.
  • Dunwoody, Sandy Springs and Brookhaven. Inside the Perimeter on the northern side, with MARTA's Red Line stations at Dunwoody and North Springs; the Indian consulate and the VFS application centre are in Sandy Springs.
  • Decatur, Emory and Druid Hills. Emory and the CDC are the employers here; the Indian restaurants and the Patel Brothers store in the Decatur 30033 postcode, Scottdale (12.0% Indian) and North Druid Hills (4.8%) are the neighbourhoods, and ISKCON's temple is on Ponce de Leon Avenue.
  • Midtown, Atlantic Station and Georgia Tech. Apartments near MARTA's Midtown and North Avenue stations, which suit students and young professionals more than families.
  • Cobb: Smyrna, Marietta and Kennesaw. 21,243 residents, a Patel Brothers in Kennesaw and the Sanatan Mandir in Smyrna.
  • South side: Riverdale. Home of the Hindu Temple of Atlanta; the survey finds only an estimated 423 Indian residents in Riverdale itself (±329), so it is a place to travel to rather than a residential district.

The rule of thumb: Midtown, Decatur or Sandy Springs for a first year without a car; North Fulton or Forsyth when the first child nears school age and the budget allows; Gwinnett for the same stage at a lower house price (county median home value $380,900) and closer to the BAPS mandir, the Shirdi Sai temple and Jimmy Carter Boulevard.

3.Your first two weeks in Atlanta

Correct or addContents ↑

The national steps — the Social Security number, a bank account without a credit history, federal tax withholding, keeping your visa status — are in the jobs guide and the cost-of-living guide. This is the Atlanta order of things.

  1. A short stay, not a lease. A furnished flat or a room for the first month buys time to see the commute before you commit to a suburb. Midtown, Decatur and Sandy Springs have the apartments you can reach without a car; Alpharetta, Duluth and Cumming are quieter but need one. Never transfer money for a place you have not stood in.
  2. Decide the car question early. Atlanta is a driving metro. MARTA reaches Midtown, Decatur, Sandy Springs and the airport; it does not reach Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Cumming, Duluth or Suwanee. The cost-of-living guide puts Georgia car insurance at about $259 a month, the highest of the six states it prices — one reason to price the car before you pick the flat.
  3. The Georgia licence clock. Georgia gives you 30 days from becoming a resident to apply for a Georgia driver's licence. The state's Department of Driver Services (DDS) needs your full Social Security number on the online form, two proofs of address and documents in English. See getting around.
  4. The Social Security number. Apply once your status allows; the DDS form, the lease, the credit card and the second bank account all get easier once it arrives.
  5. A bank account and a US number. Banks open accounts with a passport, visa papers and an address; a prepaid SIM bridges the first week. Remittance apps and their fees are compared in sending money to India.
  6. Health cover from the first day. An employer plan usually starts on day one or the first of the next month; check which. If you are buying your own, Georgia Access opens on 1 November; see health.
  7. Utilities and internet. Ask which companies supply power, gas, water and internet at the address, whether any are included in the rent, and book the internet the day you sign.
  8. Know the state. Georgia has a flat income tax of 4.99% for 2026 with a standard deduction of $15,000 for a single filer, and property tax that depends on the county and school district; your employer's withholding handles the first, a house the second.
  9. The consulate, only when you need it. Passport and OCI files go through VFS Global, and Atlanta takes passports by courier only; read the consulate section before you book anything.
  10. A Sunday at a mandir, a gurdwara or a Telugu class. An evening arti at the BAPS mandir, a Sunday at the Hindu Temple of Atlanta or a weekend Bala Vihar class will produce the name of an honest broker, a tax preparer and a paediatrician faster than any search — and the groups on Namaste Community do the same without knowing anyone first.

4.Neighbourhoods and renting: 2026 rents by area and the Georgia tenant rules

Correct or addContents ↑

Atlanta is cheaper to rent in than the coastal metros and dearer than it was. Zumper's October 2026 page for the city gives an average asking rent of $1,625 for a one-bedroom, up 10% on a year earlier, and $2,004 for a two-bedroom, down 2%; the Zumper Atlanta Metro Report of 13 October 2026 gives a median one-bedroom of $1,630 for Atlanta. The official survey shows the same order of magnitude over a longer period: the 2020–2024 ACS median gross rent is $1,672 for the metro, in 2024 dollars. Numbeo's sample of 22 October 2026 shows a one-bedroom at $2,054 in the city centre and $1,484 outside it, a three-bedroom at $3,418 and $2,165.

Zumper's figures are asking rents on its listings and are averages, not medians, for most of the smaller places; the ACS figures are what renters actually pay, across all unit types, so houses push the suburbs up. If you plan to buy, the ACS median owner-occupied home value for 2020–2024 was $367,600 for the metro, $380,900 for Gwinnett County, $550,400 for Forsyth County, $629,400 in Johns Creek, $649,000 in Alpharetta and $789,000 in Milton; those are survey medians over several years, not today's listing prices.

How renting works in Georgia

Georgia's rules changed in 2024. The Safe at Home Act (House Bill 404) applies to residential leases made or renewed on or after 1 July 2024, and the state's Department of Community Affairs summarises the law in a handbook revised on 29 August 2024.

  • Deposit. A landlord cannot demand or receive a security deposit of more than two months' rent (Code section 44-7-30.1). The handbook says it must be returned within 30 days of the end of the lease or the tenant's departure, whichever is later, and that a landlord who keeps part of it must send a notice within 30 days naming the damage and its estimated cost. Landlords who own more than ten units, or who use a management agent, must keep deposits in a separate escrow account or post a bond, give you a signed list of existing damage when you move in, and inspect when you leave — and can owe three times the amount wrongly kept, plus attorney fees.
  • Habitability. Since the Act, every residential lease is deemed to include a promise that the home is fit to live in, and "utilities" in the law now includes cooling as well as heat, light and water.
  • Eviction. Before a landlord can file for possession over unpaid rent, they must give written notice to pay or leave within three business days, posted on the door in a sealed envelope and delivered by any other method the lease names. Disputes are heard in the county's magistrate court.
  • No agency will step in. The handbook is blunt that Georgia has no government agency that can force a landlord or tenant to act; the courts are the remedy. Legal aid exists for those who qualify — the Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Georgia Legal Services Program run the Georgia Legal Aid site.
  • Retaliation. A landlord may not retaliate against a tenant for asking for repairs or complaining to a government body about code violations.
  • Income tests and guarantors. Most landlords and management companies want income at a stated multiple of the rent or a guarantor; the cost-of-living guide explains the workarounds for someone with no US credit history.

Scams to expect

A flat at half the going rate from an "owner abroad" who wants the deposit before a viewing; a room whose "landlord" asks for the whole lease in advance by wire; a deposit above the two-month cap; and the WhatsApp-group rental that disappears once the transfer lands. Nobody legitimate asks you to pay to see a home, and a property's owner can be checked against the county's tax-assessor records before you pay anything.

5.Getting around: MARTA, Ride Gwinnett, driving, the Georgia licence and the airport

Correct or addContents ↑

Atlanta is a driving metro, and this is where it shows. A job in Midtown or the airport corridor can be reached by train; a house in Johns Creek, Cumming or Duluth, almost never. Plan for a car by the end of the first month and for two cars once both adults work in different directions.

Fare (October 2026)Price
MARTA single ride, rail or bus$2.50, with up to four free transfers within three hours
MARTA 1-day / 2-day / 3-day / 4-day / 7-day pass$9 / $14 / $16 / $19 / $23.75
MARTA 30-day pass$95
MARTA 10-trip / 20-trip$25 / $42.50
MARTA reduced fare$1.00 for seniors over 65, Medicare holders and riders with disabilities
Ride Gwinnett local bus$2.50; microtransit $3
Atlanta Streetcar$1.00, no transfers; $3 for a day

MARTA's fare page lists no fare change for 2026 or 2027. Ride Gwinnett — the county's bus system, formerly Gwinnett County Transit — moved riders to a new "Better Breeze" fare system in a transition that ran from Saturday 28 March to Saturday 2 May, after which the old Breeze cards and app stopped working; remaining balances can be moved to new accounts until 30 October. Free transfers between Ride Gwinnett and MARTA need a Breeze account, not cash, and the county's express routes run to downtown and connect with MARTA at Doraville, Civic Center and Five Points.

The lines that matter

  • The Red and Gold lines run north through Midtown, North Avenue (Georgia Tech) and Peachtree Center; the Red Line ends at North Springs in Sandy Springs and the Gold Line at Doraville, beside Buford Highway. Both serve the airport.
  • The Blue line serves Decatur, Kensington and Indian Creek in DeKalb County.
  • No MARTA rail reaches Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Cumming, Duluth or Suwanee; in Gwinnett the county's own buses and microtransit are the public transport.
  • Ride Gwinnett's microtransit (booked by app) and its express routes fill some of the gap, but the GA-400 and Interstate 85 corridors are where the commute is by car.

The Georgia licence

Georgia's Department of Driver Services requires you to apply for a Georgia licence within 30 days of becoming a resident. Its page for people moving from other states says you must bring one identity document and two proofs of residency from separate sources, all with your full name and in English, surrender your out-of-state licence, and give your full Social Security number on the online form. For people from other countries the rule is that a licence from a country with a reciprocal agreement may be recognised, and everyone else must pass the Georgia written, road and vision tests. DDS names Taiwan and South Korea on its page; India is not mentioned, so plan for the tests, book the road-test appointment early and expect to need a Social Security number first. If the SSN does not verify against the Social Security Administration's records, DDS asks for further documents.

Airports and flights home

Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport is Delta's hub and is on MARTA's Red and Gold lines. We could not confirm a scheduled nonstop flight between Atlanta and India in October 2026. Delta announced in June 2025, alongside its IndiGo partnership, that it plans to fly Atlanta–Delhi nonstop; it had given no start date in the reports we found, and the coverage ties the launch to delivery of Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. Until it flies, trips to India connect through a European or Gulf hub or through another American gateway; compare itineraries by total time and by the baggage allowance on each ticket, and read what to take to India before you pack.

6.Work and employers: airlines, health care, payments, technology and the Indian IT firms

Correct or addContents ↑

Atlanta's economy is more varied than its image as the home of Delta and Coca-Cola. The Metro Atlanta Chamber's 2025 survey of the region's top employers — a headcount in full-time equivalents — lists 16 Fortune 500 companies among them, and its top five are an airline, three hospital systems and a grocer. The headcount is in airlines, hospitals, logistics, payments and software, and Indian professionals work in all of those: the hospital systems, Emory and the CDC employ doctors, nurses and researchers, and the payments, software and consulting firms employ engineers and analysts.

Georgia's Fortune 500 list on the Select Georgia site, which shows the Home Depot, UPS, Delta, Coca-Cola, Southern Company, Genuine Parts, Global Payments and others, confirms the corporate headquarters; the Chamber's table is what shows how many people actually work here. The headcounts are from the Chamber's 2025 survey, so they have moved since: the CDC's federal workforce in particular can change quickly.

Technology and the Indian IT firms

The north suburbs hold the technology and payments cluster, and several Indian IT-services firms have Alpharetta centres: Mindtree (now part of LTIMindtree) opened a 10,000-square-foot delivery centre there in 2019; GlobalAtlanta has reported Tech Mahindra expanding in Alpharetta, to about 600 staff in a report we could not date; and smaller Indian-headquartered firms such as InfoNet and KGS Technology Group have opened or based themselves in the city. Infosys appears in the Chamber's list as Infosys McCamish with 520 staff. We could not confirm current Georgia headcounts for TCS, Wipro, HCLTech or Cognizant, so check each company's careers page and LinkedIn for Alpharetta, Atlanta and Peachtree Corners openings rather than relying on a list. Microsoft is on the Chamber's list with 2,000 employees; its larger Atlanta plans, including a campus on the west side and data-centre sites in south Fulton, are reported in press and planning listings, but we could not confirm a current hiring figure, so treat them as a pointer to Microsoft's own careers page.

The visa question

The H-1B is the main route and the subject of 2026's policy fight: the weighted lottery that gives higher wage levels more entries, the fees, and the $100,000 payment for workers admitted from abroad. All of that is national and set out in the jobs guide, along with the legal routes, where the jobs are and the rules for doctors and nurses. Locally, the universities and hospital systems — Emory, Georgia Tech, Georgia State and the groups above — are among the largest employers; the jobs guide shows how to check any employer's record in the public sponsorship data before you accept, and the consultancy world has its own risks of benching and borrowed CVs, explained in Indian employers and consultancies.

What you keep

Georgia taxes income at a flat 4.99% for 2026 under HB 463, which Governor Kemp signed on 11 May 2026 and which applies from 1 January; the standard deduction is $15,000 for a single filer and $30,000 for a married couple filing jointly, and the legislature has scheduled further cuts from 2027. The take-home pay table in the cost-of-living guide shows what a Georgia salary leaves after federal tax and FICA. Numbeo's 22 October 2026 average net monthly salary for Atlanta is $5,515, a number that hides a wide spread. In the 2020–2024 ACS the median household income was $89,724 for the metro, $147,612 in Alpharetta and $160,093 in Johns Creek.

Scams

"Pay for a guaranteed job and a visa" is the oldest fraud in the community, and in Atlanta it often arrives through a WhatsApp group or a consultancy that wants a training fee. Nobody can sell you a job in America; the scams section of the jobs guide lists the patterns.

7.What Atlanta costs in 2026

Correct or addContents ↑

Atlanta is cheaper than the coasts, and the difference is mostly rent and the second car. Numbeo's 22 October 2026 estimate for a single person's monthly spending without rent is $1,340, and $4,865 for a family of four; add a $1,500–2,050 one-bedroom or a $2,165–3,418 three-bedroom and the totals follow. The site's cost-of-living guide puts an Indian family of four with one child in daycare at about $8,200 a month (₹7.8 lakh) in the Atlanta suburbs and the salary needed at about $118,000 — close to Dallas, below the coasts.

What a month looks like

For the newcomer: rent or a room, a car or a MARTA pass ($95 for 30 days), insurance, groceries, a phone plan and the health premium your employer deducts. For the suburban family: rent or a mortgage plus property tax, two cars with insurance at roughly $259 a month for the first year, daycare or after-school care, and Georgia's flat income tax. The full budgets in dollars and rupees are in the cost-of-living guide; this page only adds the local prices.

Where the Indian saving is

Groceries. A month of atta, dal, rice, spices and vegetables bought in bulk from Patel Brothers or an independent Indian grocer usually costs less than the same in small packets from a supermarket. The things that cost more than newcomers expect are the second car and its insurance, and childcare. Sending money home is cheaper by bank transfer than by cash; the remittance guide explains why since the 2026 remittance tax.

8.Health: insurance, Georgia Access, Grady and the hospital systems

Correct or addContents ↑

American health care runs on insurance, and the first job in Atlanta is to know what yours is. An employer plan is the normal route for H-1B, L-1 and most professional arrivals, with a premium taken from each pay cheque and a deductible before the plan pays; students are covered by their university's plan. What a family plan costs in 2026, what an emergency-room visit bills and how to insure parents visiting on a tourist visa are covered in the cost-of-living guide. Choose an in-network primary-care doctor in the first month, and an urgent-care centre rather than an emergency room for anything that is not an emergency.

Georgia Access

If you buy your own cover, Georgia has run its own marketplace, Georgia Access, since the 2025 plan year; from 2014 to 2024 the state used the federal HealthCare.gov. Open enrolment for 2027 coverage runs from 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027 at georgiaaccess.gov, and the state said it could not offer a window-shopping period beforehand this year. About 1.32 million people enrolled for 2026, 89% with a premium subsidy, but the extra subsidies that came with the pandemic expired at the end of 2025 and the AJC reported on 2 October 2026 that most insurers have proposed 2027 increases of "upward of 20%" and that enrolment had fallen by about 30% to roughly 900,000 by early September. Outside the enrolment window you can usually enrol only after a qualifying event such as losing employer cover.

For people on visas the larger change is federal. The July 2025 law known as H.R. 1 narrows who can receive marketplace premium tax credits from January 2027; WABE reported that lawfully present immigrants other than green-card holders and a few named groups lose them, so someone on an H-1B, F-1 or L-1 visa who is buying cover in 2027 should price the plan without a subsidy. Check your own status against the marketplace's rules before enrolling, not a friend's experience from 2025. Georgia has only partly expanded Medicaid: its Pathways programme, for incomes up to the poverty line and with a work requirement, had fewer than 18,000 people enrolled in May 2026.

If you are not covered

  • Grady Health System is the public safety-net hospital. Its financial-assistance policy, approved on 20 March 2026, covers residents of Fulton and DeKalb counties with household incomes up to 400% of the federal poverty level, in two tiers — up to 250%, and 251% to 400% — with copayments, and anyone with an emergency can apply regardless of county. The application accepts a visa, a resident-alien card or a consular ID as proof of identity and asks for proof of a Fulton or DeKalb address of at least 30 days. Grady's financial counselling office can say how your status affects an application.
  • Emergency treatment must be given whether or not you can pay; hospitals bill afterwards, and a financial-assistance application can reduce the bill.
  • Urgent-care and community clinics cost far less than an emergency room for fevers, injuries and prescriptions; Namaste Community's groups for Atlanta are a quick way to ask which clinics near you take uninsured patients.

The hospital systems

Atlanta's large employers are also its hospital groups: Northside Hospital (which has a campus in Duluth), Piedmont, Wellstar, Emory Healthcare and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, besides Grady. The network on your insurance card decides which is cheapest, so check before an appointment, not after.

Help in your language, and in a crisis

Raksha, in Atlanta since 1995, supports South Asian survivors of violence; its helpline is 404-876-0670 (weekdays 9 to 5 Eastern, in English and several Indian languages including Hindi, Bengali, Urdu, Tamil, Telugu and Kannada) and it is not a crisis line. For urgent domestic-violence help Raksha lists the Georgia hotline at 1-800-334-2836 and the national hotline at 1-800-799-7233. Dial 911 for an emergency and 988 for the national suicide and crisis line.

9.Schools: Gwinnett, Fulton and Forsyth, how to enrol, and childcare

Correct or addContents ↑

Schools decide where many Indian families settle, and the three districts families ask about are Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS, the largest in Georgia, with 143 schools), Fulton County Schools (Alpharetta, Johns Creek and Milton) and Forsyth County Schools (Cumming). Cobb, DeKalb and Atlanta Public Schools are separate districts, and a few cities run their own. The district is set by the address, so check the school-zone lookup on the district's website before you sign a lease — a home across a road can be in a different district.

Dates for 2026–27

Schools started in early August: Fulton on Monday 3 August, Gwinnett on Wednesday 5 August and Forsyth on Thursday 6 August 2026. Gwinnett and Fulton end on 26 and 27 May 2027, and both have Thanksgiving week off (23–27 November), winter break from 21 December to 1 January and spring break from 5 to 9 April; Gwinnett's fall break was 12 to 16 October and Fulton's was 21 to 23 September. These dates come from calendar aggregators that reproduce the districts' published calendars, so confirm on the district's own site. Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026, so no school day is lost to it.

How to enrol

Gwinnett's 2026–27 registration page lists what a new family needs. For every child: one proof of age (a birth certificate, a passport or a school transcript), the enrolling adult's photo ID, two proofs of address — one from a list that includes a current lease, a property-tax statement or a home-purchase agreement, and one from a current water or electric bill (a telephone bill is not accepted) — and Georgia's immunisation certificate, Form 3231 (or a notarised religious-exemption affidavit), together with the vision, hearing, dental and nutrition screening form, Form 3300, for which out-of-state certificates and health letters completed within the last 12 months are accepted. Older children bring their previous school records. The GCPS notice says a child must be five on or before 1 September to start kindergarten, and the Social Security number is requested but not required.

For students in grades six to twelve who have just arrived in the country, GCPS runs an International Newcomer Center at 495 Maltbie Street in Lawrenceville (678-985-5200), which screens and places them by appointment, with a family information form and the same documents. Fulton and Forsyth publish their own registration requirements on their websites; check them, because the document lists differ.

How to judge a school

Georgia no longer reports one overall score for its College and Career Ready Performance Index (CCRPI); it publishes components — content mastery, progress, closing gaps and readiness, and graduation rate for high schools — for every school and district. For 2025, released on 12 November 2025, Gwinnett's district scores were above the state's on content mastery at every level (76.7 against 69.2 at high school, for example) and on progress and readiness in elementary and middle schools, and below it on closing gaps. Look up the school itself, not the district, in the state's report; a district average includes dozens of schools with very different intakes.

Weekend schools and culture

The Hindu Temple of Atlanta runs Bala Vihar, yoga and Sanskrit classes and a Manabadi Telugu class; the BAPS mandir has children's programmes on Sunday afternoons; the Gujarati Samaj and the Telugu associations run cultural programmes through the year. Timetables change each term, so ask at the desk or in the groups below which classes are running now.

Childcare and universities

Childcare is a large cost: Numbeo's October 2026 figure for a private full-day preschool is $1,809 a month, and the cost-of-living guide puts infant daycare in Georgia at $11,066 a year in 2024, the cheapest of the six states it covers. For students, Georgia Tech, Emory, Georgia State, Kennesaw State and Georgia Gwinnett College are the main campuses; the rules for F-1 status are in the jobs guide.

10.Indian groceries, sweets, restaurants and where to shop

Correct or addContents ↑

Atlanta's Indian shopping is spread across the suburbs rather than concentrated on one street. The chain that everyone means has three stores in Georgia; Atlanta.com's area guide describes Alpharetta's Indian restaurants as often sitting in plazas beside Indian groceries, and lists chaat, biryani and South Indian places in Johns Creek, Duluth, Norcross, Suwanee and Cumming.

The big grocers

  • Patel Brothers has three stores in Georgia on its own locations list: 1709 Church Street, Suite F, Decatur 30033; 3230 Caliber Street, Suwanee 30024; and 2646 George Busbee Parkway NW, Unit 100, Kennesaw 30144. There is no Duluth, Alpharetta or Johns Creek store on the list.
  • Jimmy Carter Boulevard, Norcross is the corridor of ethnic restaurants, groceries and small businesses in Gwinnett, and the Global Mall at 5675 Jimmy Carter Boulevard sits on it: an enclosed centre of about 189,000 square feet with a food court, which a commercial listing describes as the only indoor South Asian mall in the country and the Gujarati Sahitya Forum calls an Indian shopping and community hub. We could not find a recent report on its tenants, so check which shops are open before a long drive.
  • Independent grocers and sweet shops are the answer where there is no Patel Brothers; Atlanta.com places Indian groceries in Alpharetta's plazas, and the directory below lists the shops that members have added for each town.

Restaurants named in 2026 dining guides

  • Decatur: Chai Pani at 406 W Ponce de Leon Avenue (street food and a lunch buffet), Zyka at 1677 Scott Boulevard (Hyderabadi biryani and samosas) and Madras Mantra at 2179 Lawrenceville Highway (vegetarian South Indian, with a lunch buffet).
  • Norcross and the Gwinnett side: Mughals at 5265 Jimmy Carter Boulevard for Pakistani and Bangladeshi dishes beside Indian takeaway; Atlanta.com's area guide sends people to Duluth for South Indian tiffin and buffets.
  • North Fulton and Cobb: Nalan Indian Cuisine at 5815 Windward Parkway, Alpharetta (idli, appam and a large vegetarian menu), Aroma Indian Kitchen at 4750 Alabama Road in Roswell, Bawarchi at 6631 Roswell Road for biryani and dosas, and Swapna at 2655 Cobb Parkway SE.
  • Intown: Botiwalla at Ponce City Market (675 Ponce de Leon Avenue NE), Blue India at 933 Peachtree Street NE, Tabla at 77 12th Street NE, and Ghee Indian Kitchen at 1050 Howell Mill Road.
  • Pakistani and Buford Highway: Dil Bahar Cafe & Market at 5825 Glenridge Drive in Sandy Springs, Karachi Broast & Grill in Marietta and Bismillah Cafe at 4022 Buford Highway NE. Ask each whether its meat is halal before you go; the guides do not say.

Restaurants close and move; the two guides these come from were updated in June and August 2026, and the owners' own pages have the current hours. The businesses listed under this section are the ones on Namaste Community's directory — browse the Indian businesses across the US, add the shop that is missing, and review the one that saved your Diwali.

11.Temples, gurdwaras and the Jain Society

Correct or addContents ↑

Metro Atlanta's main temples are far apart: the BAPS mandir is northeast in Lilburn — Wikipedia calls it the largest mandir of its kind outside India when it opened in 2007 — the Hindu Temple of Atlanta south in Riverdale and the Shirdi Sai temple north in Suwanee. A visit outside your own county can mean a long drive in Atlanta traffic, so families often choose one temple near home and travel to the others for festivals.

Other temples

Atlanta.com names further Hindu centres without street addresses: the Shiv Mandir of Atlanta, near the Global Mall in Norcross; the Sanatan Mandir in Smyrna (Krishna, Rama, Shiva, Durga and Ganesha); Shree Shakti Mandir in Lake City, for the goddess; the Hindu Temple of Newnan, southwest of the city; and the Ramakrishna Vedanta Society of Atlanta in Tucker. A temple named for Venkateswara and Shiva is the Hindu Temple of Atlanta itself; we could not confirm a separate "Shiva Vishnu" temple. Call before a visit, because opening hours and puja schedules differ by day and by festival.

Sikh and Jain Atlanta

The two gurdwaras with phone numbers on Emory's list are in Norcross and Stone Mountain, and Wikipedia's list adds a third in Roswell. Only 545 people in the metro are counted in the ACS under the separate "Sikh" write-in group, which is a floor rather than a count of the religion, but it suggests the gurdwaras are smaller than the large temples. The Jain Society in Norcross is the community's centre.

Mosques and churches

The Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities (see the section on neighbours) are concentrated in Gwinnett, DeKalb and Cobb. We have not listed individual mosques or churches, because the sources we could confirm today were for the temples above. Namaste Community's directory, linked from the Indian businesses across the US, carries addresses and reviews of places of worship as members add them.

12.Associations, community organisations, culture and classes

Correct or addContents ↑

Indian Atlanta is organised by language, region and religion, and the associations are where the festivals, the language classes and the help happen. Many are volunteer-run, meet in temple halls and school auditoriums, and change committees each year, so the current contact is usually a phone number or an Instagram page passed on by someone who went last year.

The umbrella and cultural bodies

  • India American Cultural Association (IACA) — established in 1970; it runs the Festival of India on or near Independence Day (the 30th was on Saturday 15 August 2026 at the Gas South Center in Duluth, with the Consul General and state legislators speaking), Diwali celebrations and Atlanta Indian Idol.
  • Federation of Indian-American Associations of Georgia (FIAAG) — named in community directories alongside IACA as a body that promotes Indian culture and organises festivals; we could not confirm its current programme.
  • Gujarati Samaj of Atlanta — runs Navratri and Diwali celebrations and supports newly arrived Gujarati immigrants.
  • Telugu associations — the Telugu Association of Metro Atlanta (TAMA), the Greater Atlanta Telugu Association and Indian Friends of Atlanta serve the Telugu community; TAMA's listings include a Sankranthi celebration and a free flu-shot clinic for the uninsured. The Hindu Temple of Atlanta also runs a Manabadi Telugu class.
  • Temples and gurdwaras — the BAPS mandir, the Hindu Temple of Atlanta, the Shirdi Sai temple, the Jain Society and the gurdwaras all host classes, festivals and langar.

Community organisations

  • Raksha (404-876-0670) — founded in 1995, the Atlanta nonprofit that supports South Asian survivors of violence and runs education and advocacy; not a crisis line.
  • Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Georgia Legal Services Program — free civil legal help for people who qualify, including housing and tenant problems.
  • Atlanta Dunia — a community portal that lists restaurants, events and organisations.

The rest of India

A metro of 167,000 Indians has room for most regional communities. Bengali groups hold a Durga Puja in Atlanta, and Tamil, Kannada, Malayali, Marathi and Punjabi groups form around Pongal, Rajyotsava, Onam, Ganeshotsav and Vaisakhi, but we could not confirm a current committee for each. They are too many and too changeable to list reliably; the groups on Namaste Community (below) are where the current ones surface, and the events listings carry their programmes.

Cricket, dance and the arts

Cricket clubs and dance and music schools often recruit through temples, associations and the community groups, and the groups below are the quickest way to find a club that is short of a wicketkeeper or a teacher with a place free. Ask other parents before you pay a term's fees, and ask which classes are running this term.

13.The festival year in Atlanta, 2026

Correct or addContents ↑

Atlanta's festivals are run by associations and temples and held in halls, convention centres and temple grounds rather than on a street, so the calendar is a list of venues. The big public occasion is the Festival of India in August; Navratri and Durga Puja are in the temples and halls in October; Diwali is a spread of temple pujas and ticketed or free evenings across the suburbs.

Diwali, explained

Diwali in Atlanta is the first fortnight of November. It opens on Sunday 1 November with two events: SwaRhythm Atlanta's Deepostav in Suwanee, a Diwali music evening at 4pm that raises funds for the Shree Dattatreya Temple, and MJS Events' Diwali Market from 11am to 5pm at the Windermere Association in Cumming. On Diwali itself, Sunday 8 November, the Shirdi Sai Temple's November listing shows a Lakshmi Pooja at 7pm, with Annakut and the Gujarati New Year (Bestu Varas) on Monday 9 November and its Annakut celebration on Thursday 12 November; other temples keep their own programmes, so check the temple you plan to visit. Believe Music Hall's Bollywood Diwali Dhamaka is on Friday 13 November. The dates come from the organisers' listings; the Diwali page for Atlanta collects them as they are confirmed.

The other rhythms

The India American Cultural Association's Festival of India is the largest annual event we found: its 30th, on India's 80th Independence Day, drew the Consul General, state legislators and a message from US Senator Jon Ossoff, and included a health fair and awards. Spring brings Holi, Vaisakhi and the Telugu and Tamil new years, usually in temple and community halls; autumn brings Navratri, Durga Puja and Diwali. The events posted near Atlanta on Namaste Community appear below; the full Atlanta events calendar carries the rest.

14.WhatsApp groups, and finding your people in Atlanta on Namaste Community

Correct or addContents ↑

Atlanta's Indian community runs on WhatsApp. There are groups by apartment complex and subdivision, by employer and H-1B batch, for temple volunteers, for the regional associations, for each university's incoming class, for cricket teams and for every "rooms near Midtown" market — and the "Indians in Atlanta" Facebook groups where people ask for the links. The groups are how the community has always organised itself, and nothing on this page is going to change that.

What the groups are good at, and what they are not

They are fast and generous. Ask at ten at night which Johns Creek dentist speaks Gujarati, or whether a Duluth landlord can keep a three-month deposit, and someone answers before eleven. But you need to know somebody to be added, the links in circulation are often dead, and a group of a thousand strangers is exactly where the "guaranteed job, pay the training fee first" and "room in Alpharetta, send the deposit today" scams begin. The same questions about the Georgia deposit cap, the licence test and the Fulton, Gwinnett or Forsyth school zones are asked every month and the answers scroll away. Every member sees your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: a garba in Cumming and a puja in Riverdale arrive with the same weight as the one around the corner.

What Namaste Community adds

Namaste Community keeps the community's groups, events and businesses for Atlanta in one place, alongside the same pages for other cities and countries.

  • Groups for Atlanta. The site lists local groups for the metro at /groups/in/usa/atlanta, and the app has groups, events and a directory in one place. Groups are moderated and tied to a place, so a Gwinnett parents' group is for Gwinnett.
  • Events. Garba nights, Diwali programmes and the Festival of India are in the Atlanta events calendar, and the ones near you appear under the festival section above.
  • A directory. Grocers, restaurants, temples and services are listed in the US directory, with reviews from people who used them.
  • Ask. A question about a deposit in Duluth, a tax preparer in Alpharetta or a Telugu class in Suwanee can be asked once on Ask, where the answer stays for the next person instead of scrolling away. An anonymous mode exists for questions you would rather not attach your name to.

Your first week

  1. Open the Atlanta groups and join the general one and the one for your language, your area or your interest. Read before you post — the answers to the paperwork questions are often already there.
  2. Go to one event in your first fortnight — a Sunday at the Hindu Temple of Atlanta, an evening arti at the BAPS mandir, a Diwali evening in Suwanee. It is the fastest way from "the Indian community in Atlanta" as a phrase to three people whose names you know.
  3. Ask the question you actually have, and say which county or town you are in: the rent, school and tax answers differ between Fulton, Forsyth, Gwinnett and DeKalb.
  4. When you have found your home, your doctor and your grocer, leave a review or an answer for the next person arriving from Hyderabad, Ahmedabad or Kochi.

If the group you need does not exist yet — a parents' group in Cumming, a Kannada group in Duluth, a team short of a wicketkeeper — start it. It appears below for the next person searching.

15.Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepali, Bhutanese and Sri Lankan neighbours

Correct or addContents ↑

Indian Atlanta shares its streets with other South Asian communities, and the surveys give the shape. In the 2020–2024 ACS, the metro had an estimated 13,835 Pakistani residents (margin of error ±1,659), 7,053 Bangladeshi (±1,172), 3,548 Nepalese (±1,068), 1,475 Bhutanese (±699) and 854 Sri Lankan (±355). Everything on this page about renting, the Georgia licence, Georgia Access, the schools and the scams applies identically to all of them; the differences are the consulate, the festival calendar and the aisle you head for.

Pakistani

Among the five largest counties, Gwinnett has the most Pakistani residents, an estimated 5,155, followed by Cobb with 2,786, Fulton with 1,476 and DeKalb with 1,172. Smyrna in Cobb has an estimated 689 and Suwanee 429. Restaurants such as Mughals on Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross, Dil Bahar Cafe & Market in Sandy Springs and Karachi Broast & Grill in Marietta are the places local dining guides name for Pakistani food.

Bangladeshi

Gwinnett (3,044) and DeKalb (2,574) have the most Bangladeshi residents of the five largest counties. At city level the ACS estimates 952 Bangladeshi residents in Doraville, 520 in Norcross and 328 in Chamblee, three places along the Buford Highway and Interstate 85 corridor; Doraville has a MARTA station and Norcross has Mughals, which serves Bangladeshi as well as Pakistani dishes.

Nepali and Bhutanese

DeKalb has the most Nepalese residents of the five largest counties (1,391, against 990 in Gwinnett) and Gwinnett the most Bhutanese (791, against 684 in DeKalb). Many Bhutanese in the United States arrived through refugee resettlement, and their associations and the Nepali groups are where the dates for Dashain and Tihar surface. The estimates for small groups carry wide margins, so treat them as an order of magnitude.

Sri Lankan

The survey estimates 854 Sri Lankans in the metro, too few for an official picture. The Georgia Buddhist Vihara in Lithonia is listed by Emory as a Sri Lankan Theravada community; the Tamil New Year in April and Pongal in January surface in the Tamil groups.

Sikhs

The 545 people counted under "Sikh" in the metro, 190 of them in Forsyth County and 243 in Gwinnett, are a floor, not a count: the survey asks about race and ancestry, not religion, so a Sikh who ticked "Asian Indian" is counted there instead. The gurdwaras in Norcross and Stone Mountain are the community's centres.

16.The Indian consulate, VFS, help lines and safety

Correct or addContents ↑

Consular services

The Consulate General of India in Atlanta is at 5549 Glenridge Drive NE, Atlanta GA 30342. Its working hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 to 17:30, closed on weekends and public holidays, and its emergency line, reserved for genuine emergencies such as a death abroad or the transport of mortal remains, is +1 (404) 910 7919. Its jurisdiction covers Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee and the US Virgin Islands. At the August 2026 Festival of India the Consul General, Ramesh Babu Lakshmanan, was among the speakers.

You will rarely need to go in person. Passports, OCI cards, visas for non-Indian family members and attestations are lodged through VFS Global; since 1 August 2025 the services, including the miscellaneous consular services, have moved to VFS, with death registration, no-objection certificates for transporting remains or ashes, and life certificates kept at the consulate. The VFS application centre is at 1200 Altmore Avenue, Suite 175, Sandy Springs GA 30342, in the same postcode as the consulate. Atlanta takes passport applications by courier only, and the Orlando centre files to Atlanta, so a file from Florida also travels here. The fees, documents and the order of steps are national and are in the OCI card guide and the passport renewal guide. The OCI guide records Atlanta as the slowest of the missions on quoted processing times, so file early. For a file stuck past the published time, the MADAD portal is the formal grievance route.

Help lines

  • 911 for police, fire and ambulance; 988 for the suicide and crisis line.
  • Raksha, 404-876-0670, weekdays 9 to 5 Eastern, for South Asian survivors of violence; for urgent help the Georgia Domestic Violence Hotline is 1-800-334-2836 and the National Domestic Violence Hotline 1-800-799-7233.
  • Georgia Access at georgiaaccess.gov for insurance; Grady Health System's financial counselling office for hospital bills.
  • Atlanta Legal Aid Society and the Georgia Legal Services Program for tenant and other civil problems you cannot afford a lawyer for.

Your status, in 2025–26

The rules around status changed repeatedly in 2025 and 2026, and a mistake now costs more. The H-1B lottery has been weighted towards higher wage levels since February 2026; the $100,000 payment for workers admitted from abroad has been challenged in court; and from 15 September 2026 F-1 students are admitted to the end date on their I-20 rather than for "duration of status". All of it is set out in the jobs guide. The practical rules for Atlanta: keep copies of every I-797, I-20 and pay slip; never let OPT unemployment days or a grace period run out unnoticed; use a qualified immigration lawyer, not a WhatsApp consultant; and treat any caller who says your visa will be cancelled unless you pay as a fraudster. The "digital arrest" and fake-officer scams are described in the remittance guide.

Safety, honestly

Atlanta is a big metro with big-city crime in some places and quiet suburbs in others, and the Indian areas are mostly suburban. The practical rules are the ordinary ones: do not leave anything visible in a parked car, lock the car and the house, be careful with packages left on porches, and avoid empty streets late at night near stations. The scams that hurt newcomers most are housing and job frauds, not street crime — fake listings, deposits above the legal cap, "training fees" for jobs, and calls from people pretending to be the consulate, the police or immigration. Report a hate incident to the police — 911 if anyone is in danger — and, if you want support afterwards, contact Raksha or a temple or association committee.

Atlanta summers are hot and humid, with air-conditioning a necessity rather than a luxury, and winters are mild but can bring ice that closes roads for a day or two. The national rules on jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passports and remittances are in the guides linked above; Indians in the USA lists events, groups and businesses across the country.

Questions people ask

How many Indians live in Atlanta?
About 167,000 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Atlanta–Sandy Springs–Roswell metro area: 167,342 in the US Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey (margin of error ±4,962), 2.7% of residents. Fulton County has 43,972, Forsyth 38,084, Gwinnett 32,477, Cobb 21,243 and DeKalb 17,309; Georgia as a whole has 191,013. The survey is a sample, so the figures are estimates.
Where do most Indians live in Atlanta?
In three arcs of suburbs: North Fulton and Forsyth along GA-400, where Johns Creek and Alpharetta are about 14% Indian and Forsyth County 14.2%; Gwinnett County around Duluth, Suwanee, Lawrenceville and Norcross; and Decatur, Emory and Dunwoody inside the Perimeter. Midtown and Georgia Tech have students and young professionals. There is no single Indian neighbourhood, and most families live in houses and drive.
What is the best area to live in Atlanta for Indians?
It depends on the stage of life. For a first year without a car, Midtown, Decatur or Sandy Springs near MARTA; for a family with school-age children, Johns Creek and Alpharetta (Fulton County Schools), Cumming (Forsyth County Schools) or Duluth and Suwanee (Gwinnett County Public Schools).
