What to take to India from the US (2026): gifts, electronics, chocolate, customs and shipping

Take what is cheaper or better in the US and light to carry: one new laptop (duty-free for anyone over 18), a phone you have started using yourself, chocolate and nuts bought in bulk, vitamins, branded sports shoes and perfume, and small gifts chosen per person — not Indian groceries, cotton clothes or anything bulky. Since 2 February 2026 an Indian resident or NRI arriving by air clears ₹75,000 (about $790) of new goods duty-free plus used personal effects, 2 litres of alcohol, 100 cigarettes and, after a year abroad, 20 g (men) or 40 g (women) of gold jewellery; anything above that pays 35% duty plus surcharge, ₹25,000 is the cash limit in rupees, and foreign currency over $5,000 in notes or $10,000 in all must be declared. Parcels are no cheaper: a courier box pays duty and 18% IGST, and the "gift" label stopped working in December 2019.

1.The honest answer first: what people in India actually want from the US, and what is a waste of luggage

Correct or addContents ↑

The question is asked before every trip home, and the honest answer has changed. Twenty years ago an American suitcase was a treasure chest; in 2026 almost everything is sold in India, often by the same brands, and the rupee at about ₹95 to the dollar (mid-October 2026) means the arithmetic has to be done item by item. What still makes sense falls into four groups.

  • Things India taxes heavily. Apple products, cameras, gaming consoles, premium headphones and good-quality power tools carry import duty and GST in India, so the US shelf price is lower even after the dollar conversion — but only within Indian customs’ allowance, which this page spends a chapter on. The one phone you are using and one new laptop are the classic examples; a second sealed iPhone is, in October 2026, not worth it.
  • Things the US does better or cheaper by volume. Chocolate and nuts from warehouse clubs, vitamins and supplements, branded running shoes and sportswear in the outlet sales, perfume, cosmetics and skincare lines that India imports at a premium, children’s toys and construction sets, kitchen gadgets and a few over-the-counter medicines a doctor has named.
  • Things that mean something. A framed photograph, a university sweatshirt, a locally made jam, maple syrup, a book in English for a child learning to read, a bottle from a state you live in — the gift that says where you have been living rather than what you could afford.
  • Things somebody asked for. Ask. Parents and in-laws are better at saying what they want than at pretending to like what arrives, and a list avoids the sixth box of chocolates.

What wastes weight: Indian groceries and spices (sold at a fraction of the US price at home), cotton clothing, bedsheets and towels, basic electronics such as kettles and irons (voltage-wrong and available everywhere), generic plastic toys, branded clothing that is made in India anyway, gold bought in the US (no saving, and customs is strict), prescription medicines you cannot show a prescription for, and anything in a box bigger than a shoebox. Stainless steel, Tupperware and rice cookers belonged to the 1990s.

Two numbers frame the rest of this page. Indian customs lets a returning resident or NRI arriving by air bring ₹75,000 of new goods duty-free, on top of used personal effects; and a US–India economy ticket typically carries one or two checked bags of 23 kg each. Almost every decision — what to buy, how many, in what box — is a trade between those two limits and the duty on what is over them. The data hub for Indians in the US covers the community you are flying home from; this page covers the suitcase.

2.Gifts by person: parents, in-laws, children, friends and colleagues, with price bands

Correct or addContents ↑

A gift list by recipient, with what travels well and what people in India actually use. Prices are what a thing costs in the US in October 2026, converted at ₹95 to the dollar; they are bands, not shelf prices, and the point of the band is to stop you overspending on people who would rather have your time.

WhoWhat lands wellBand
ParentsGood walking shoes in their size (write it down before you leave), a lightweight warm jacket or fleece, a blood-pressure monitor or pulse oximeter of a known brand, reading glasses in several strengths, a tablet already set up with their video-calling account, large-print books, vitamins the doctor has approved, dark chocolate, pistachios and almonds$40–250 (₹3,800–23,750)
In-lawsPerfume or an eau de toilette, a good leather wallet or handbag, a cashmere or merino scarf, a box of assorted chocolates that is obviously from abroad, a bottle of single malt or a Californian wine within the 2-litre allowance, a kitchen gadget they have mentioned$50–200 (₹4,750–19,000)
Children and teenagersConstruction sets and board games (far dearer in India), a branded backpack, trainers in a size up, graphic novels and picture books, a child-proof tablet case, sweets that are not sold in India, a university or sports-team hoodie, video-game vouchers for the Indian store rather than US discs$15–120 (₹1,400–11,400)
FriendsCraft chocolate, maple syrup, a state-made hot sauce or coffee, a reusable water bottle of the famous brands, a good multi-tool, a candle, a cap from your city; for a close friend a pair of running shoes or wireless earbuds$10–150 (₹950–14,250)
Colleagues and neighboursOne box of individually wrapped chocolates or a bag of mixed nuts to share, small bottles of hand cream, fridge magnets, pens — things that divide into many$2–10 a head (₹190–950)
Household help and the people who look after your parentsCash in an envelope is kindest; add a box of chocolates, a torch, a wristwatch or a phone case$20–100 (₹1,900–9,500)

How to buy it

Buy once, in bulk, at a warehouse club or an outlet, three to four weeks before you fly; the week before is when the good sizes are gone. Keep the receipts in your hand luggage — Indian customs values new goods on the invoice, and a bag of eight sealed phone cases without receipts looks like trade stock. Unwrap outer cartons and recycle them in the US; a flattened box weighs nothing and a wrapped present is opened at the red channel anyway. Put chocolate in the checked bag in the middle of soft clothes, never in the cabin bag that sits in the sun on a Delhi tarmac, and fly in winter if chocolate matters. Sizes are the commonest failure: US shoe and clothing sizes differ from Indian and European ones, so photograph the label of a pair they already own.

What not to buy as a gift

Anything with a plug that is not a charger (US plugs are different and 110 V kettles die at 230 V), perfume in bottles over 100 ml for the cabin bag, cosmetics with the ingredient list they cannot read, sarees or kurtas (bought at home for less and better), gold, and anything a US store sells as "Indian". The five states without a statewide sales tax — Oregon, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire and, apart from local levies, Alaska — are where a large shopping list is cheapest; Louisiana’s combined rate of just over 10% is the other end.

3.Electronics: iPhones, laptops, the ₹75,000 allowance, the one-laptop rule, sealed versus used, and the warranty catch

Correct or addContents ↑

This is the US-specific chapter, because the question "should I carry an iPhone for my brother" has a different answer in October 2026 from the one it had in 2023. Here are the prices on Apple’s own stores on 17 October 2026, and the customs arithmetic beside them.

Item (base storage)US storeIndia storeGap at ₹95
iPhone 17, 256 GB$929 unlocked (the "from $899" needs a US carrier plan)₹99,900about ₹11,600
iPhone 18 Pro, 256 GBfrom $1,199from ₹1,64,900about ₹51,000
MacBook Air 13-inch M5, 16 GB / 512 GB$1,099 at the March launch; Apple raised it in June 2026 (reported at $1,299 — confirm on apple.com)₹1,49,900 since the June rise, from ₹1,19,900roughly ₹26,000

Now the rules. A resident or NRI arriving by air may clear new goods worth ₹75,000 duty-free (Baggage Rules, 2026, rule 5), plus one new laptop or notebook if they are 18 or over (the same rule — the laptop is over and above the ₹75,000), plus their used personal effects. Anything over the allowance pays duty on the excess at 35% (Notification 26/2016-Customs, which the 2026 amendment left unchanged) plus the 10% social welfare surcharge on that duty, so 38.5% of the excess in practice; some February 2026 newspaper reports quoted 10%, which is the Budget 2026 rate for parcels under heading 9804, not for baggage, so treat 38.5% as the figure until the ATITHI app computes yours. The allowance cannot be pooled between two passengers, and goods in commercial quantities are not baggage at all, whatever duty you offer.

The iPhone sums

  • One iPhone 17 for yourself. $929 is about ₹88,250; the excess over ₹75,000 is ₹13,250 and the duty about ₹5,100. Landed cost about ₹93,400 against ₹99,900 in India — a saving of ₹6,500 ($68) before US sales tax, which in most states (6–10%) wipes it out. The only honest case for the base model is that you wanted a US unit anyway.
  • One iPhone 18 Pro. About ₹1,14,000 landed, excess ₹39,000, duty about ₹15,000, so about ₹1,29,000 against ₹1,64,900 — a real saving of around ₹36,000, or ₹25,000–28,000 after sales tax in a taxed state.
  • A second phone for a relative. Your ₹75,000 is used up by the first, so the whole second phone is dutiable: 38.5% of ₹88,250 is about ₹34,000, and an iPhone 17 lands at about ₹1,22,000 — more than Apple India charges. In October 2026 the sealed second iPhone is a loss, not a gift.

Sealed box or phone in your pocket

Customs treats a used phone that you are carrying as personal effects, duty-free; a sealed box is new goods against the allowance. The officer decides, and the honest line is the simple one: declare new goods on the ATITHI app before you land, keep the invoice, and do not carry devices for people you cannot name. Two sealed phones, a watch and earbuds in one bag is the pattern that gets a passenger pulled from the green channel and fined.

The two catches with US iPhones

  1. US iPhones are eSIM-only. Apple’s specification page says the iPhone 17 "does not support a physical SIM". Indian networks issue eSIMs, but a parent’s number has to be converted at a store or in the operator’s app, and a shop in a small town may not have done it before. An iPhone bought in India has a SIM tray.
  2. The warranty follows the country of sale. Apple’s US warranty says it "may restrict warranty service" to the country where the device was sold, and that service is limited to the options available where it is requested. Indian Apple service centres do repair US phones, but parts and policy can differ — AppleCare+ bought in the US helps.

Laptops, and everything else

The one-new-laptop rule is the best deal in the baggage rules: a MacBook Air at US price, duty-free, in addition to the ₹75,000. A second laptop is dutiable on its full value once the allowance is spent. Tablets, cameras, drones (prohibited — see the customs chapter), gaming consoles, smartwatches and headphones all count against the ₹75,000. Power banks and spare batteries travel in the cabin bag only (the US rules are in the departure chapter). A television is on the excluded list and is never duty-free.

4.Chocolate, nuts, vitamins and other food that travels: what is cheaper, what India restricts, and how to pack it

Correct or addContents ↑

Food is the gift nobody returns. The things worth the weight are the ones India imports at a premium or does not make at all.

Chocolate

American and European chocolate bought in bulk in the US is markedly cheaper than the same imported bars in an Indian supermarket, and the assortments sold at warehouse clubs — individually wrapped squares, truffles, filled bars, the seasonal tins — are the classic Indian-aunt gift because they divide among a household. Dark chocolate travels best; anything with caramel or cream fillings suffers above 30 °C. Buy sealed, pack in the middle of the checked bag surrounded by clothes, and in April–June accept that a bag left on a tarmac for an hour will melt it. There is no Indian customs limit on chocolate beyond the general allowance and the commercial-quantity test; thirty identical boxes invite a conversation.

Nuts and dried fruit

California almonds, pistachios, walnuts, pecans and cranberries are cheaper at origin. On 1 October 2026 the Delhi wholesale price of California almond kernels was ₹1,000–1,070 a kilo, against US export offers of about €6.75 a kilo at the same time, and the retail gap is wider; a 1.3 kg bag from a US club store is a real present. Keep them sealed and labelled — loose nuts in a zip bag are exactly what the plant-quarantine line on the declaration form is about.

Vitamins and supplements

Vitamin D, B12, omega-3, multivitamins, protein powder and joint supplements are far cheaper in the US and the brands are trusted. Carry personal quantities in original sealed containers; a case of 24 is a consignment. Prescription medicines for a relative need the prescription with you, and anything controlled — stimulants, strong painkillers, sleeping pills — falls under India’s narcotic and psychotropic law, which the customs guide lists as prohibited without authorisation. Do not carry medicines for people whose prescription you do not have.

What India restricts

The Indian customs declaration (Form CBD-I) asks every passenger whether they are carrying meat and meat products, dairy products, fish or poultry products, and seeds, plants, fruits, flowers or other planting material; a "yes" means the red channel. Jerky, cured meat, cheese and fresh produce are the things to leave behind. Sealed, shelf-stable, labelled products in personal quantities are what passes in practice, but the officer can refuse any of it, and there is no appeal at the belt. India’s food-safety import regime (FSSAI) is for commercial consignments; food in a passenger’s bag for personal use is judged by customs on quantity and packaging, not by a food licence. Honey, maple syrup, jam, coffee, tea, spices, biscuits, cereal and packaged sweets are routine.

Alcohol

Two litres of spirits or wine per adult are duty-free into India; beyond that the excess is dutiable and large quantities are refused. On the US side the TSA allows 24–70% alcohol in checked bags only up to 5 litres per passenger, in unopened retail packaging; anything over 70% (140 proof) cannot fly at all. Bottles over 100 ml go in the hold.

Packing food

Liquids and pastes over 100 ml (3.4 oz) — syrup, honey, peanut butter, sauces — go in the checked bag under the TSA’s 3-1-1 rule. Double-bag glass in socks and zip bags, keep a list of what is in which bag for the declaration, and remember Indian customs’ own line: used personal effects and reasonable travel supplies are free, "commercial quantities" are not baggage.

5.What is genuinely cheaper in the US than in India in 2026 — and what is not

Correct or addContents ↑

Price comparisons go stale fast, so this table is dated: October 2026, dollar prices from the makers’ US stores or US retail, rupee prices from their India stores or Indian retail, converted at ₹95 to the dollar. Where a figure is a band rather than a list price it says so.

Cheaper in the USWhyExample (October 2026)
Apple’s Pro phones and MacsIndia’s import duty and GST on finished electronicsiPhone 18 Pro from $1,199 (≈₹1,14,000) against ₹1,64,900; MacBook Air 13-inch M5 ₹1,49,900 in India against the US list price after June’s rise
Branded trainers and sportswear in outlet and seasonal salesOutlet pricing and sales depth; Indian retail prices sit near full US listA running shoe at a US outlet is commonly 30–50% below its Indian MRP during sales (a band, not a list price)
Nuts and dried fruitOrigin pricingAlmonds ₹1,000–1,070 a kilo wholesale in Delhi against about €6.75 a kilo at US origin
Chocolate and confectionery in bulkClub-store pricing; Indian imports carry duty and a distributor marginAssortment tins and multi-packs at warehouse clubs
Vitamins, supplements, proteinScale; many Indian products are the same brands importedA year’s vitamin D or omega-3 for the price of three months in India (band)
Perfume, premium skincare and cosmeticsUS retail and duty-free pricing; Indian imports marked upThe same eau de parfum is routinely dearer in an Indian department store
Toys, construction sets and board gamesIndian retail imports in small volumesBranded construction sets at well under the Indian MRP
Kitchen gadgets, multi-tools, quality luggageVariety and sale pricingChoose 230 V-indifferent items: knives, pans, hand tools, bags
Not cheaper, or not worth itWhy
Base iPhone 17$929 (≈₹88,250) against ₹99,900: a few thousand rupees’ gap, eaten by duty on the excess above ₹75,000 and US sales tax, with an eSIM-only US unit at the end
GoldUS jewellery prices carry retail margin, the duty-free allowance is 20 g or 40 g by weight only, and bars and coins pay duty from the first gram
Indian clothing and textilesMade in India, priced for India
Generic medicinesIndian generics cost a fraction of US prices
Spices, lentils, rice, picklesIndian staples at Indian prices; also what you bring back
Spectacles, dental and medical careFar cheaper in India — the reverse trade
Books by Indian publishers, school stationeryLocal pricing
Televisions and large appliancesExcluded from the duty-free allowance; voltage and warranty problems; sold in India at competitive prices
Anything over 23 kgThe second bag or the overweight fee costs more than the saving

Two cautions. First, the rupee moves: at ₹85 the Apple gaps were smaller and at ₹95 they are larger, so redo the sum the week you fly. Second, "cheaper" is before Indian duty: every new item above counts against the ₹75,000 allowance and the one-laptop rule, and a shopping list that totals ₹2 lakh is a shopping list that pays 38.5% on the second ₹1.25 lakh. The jobs guide for the US has the earnings side of this ledger — Jobs in the US for Indians — and the OCI card and passport renewal guides the paperwork that gets you to the airport.

6.Indian customs on arrival in 2026: the Baggage Rules 2026, gold, cash, what is banned, and the green and red channels

Correct or addContents ↑

India replaced its customs baggage rules on 2 February 2026: the Baggage Rules, 2026 (Notification 14/2026-Customs (N.T.) of 1 February 2026) and the Customs Baggage (Declaration and Processing) Regulations, 2026 superseded the 2016 rules, and the CBIC published a 65-page Guide for International Travellers on 26 February. Most of what the internet still repeats — ₹50,000, value caps on jewellery — is the old law.

The allowances

WhoDuty-free, arriving by air or sea
Indian resident, NRI or OCI holder ("tourist of Indian origin"), or a foreigner on a non-tourist visaUsed personal effects plus ₹75,000 of other goods (infants: personal effects only)
Tourist of foreign originUsed personal effects plus ₹25,000
Anyone arriving by landUsed personal effects only
Passenger aged 18 or over (not crew)One new laptop or notebook, in addition
Resident or NRI who has lived abroad more than one yearGold jewellery up to 40 g (women) or 20 g (others), by weight, no value cap
Every adult2 litres of alcoholic liquor or wine; 100 cigarettes or 25 cigars or 125 g of tobacco; 50 cartridges
Transfer of residence (moving back)Household goods up to ₹1.5 lakh (3–12 months abroad), ₹3 lakh (a year in the last two) or ₹7.5 lakh (two years or more), one unit each of a listed set of appliances

Allowances cannot be pooled: a couple cannot clear one ₹1.4 lakh item on two allowances. Excluded from every free allowance are firearms, cartridges over 50, tobacco and alcohol beyond the limits, gold or silver in any form other than ornaments, and televisions. Duty on the excess is 35% plus surcharge (see the electronics chapter) and is paid in rupees or by card at the counter, or in advance through ATITHI.

Gold

Jewellery you wear daily is a personal effect. The weight allowance above is for jewellery only, after a year abroad. Bars, coins and biscuits get no allowance: an eligible passenger of Indian origin returning after at least six months abroad may bring up to 1 kg of gold on payment of duty in convertible foreign currency under Notification 45/2025-Customs (third-party tables quoted the concessional rate at 6% in 2026 — confirm the figure the week you fly); everyone else pays the full rate, and undeclared gold is seized. Jewellery brought in for a wedding and taken back out can be entered on a temporary baggage import certificate, and jewellery you take out of India for a trip is covered against re-entry by an export certificate (Form CBD-III) applied for before departure.

Cash

  • Rupees: a resident may carry ₹25,000 in notes out of India and bring the same back (RBI’s Export and Import of Currency Regulations, 2015; not to or from Nepal and Bhutan).
  • Foreign currency into India: no limit, but a Currency Declaration Form is required when notes exceed US$5,000 or notes plus traveller’s cheques exceed US$10,000 (the form was re-annexed to the regulations on 23 February 2026). Keep it: it is what lets you take the unspent balance out again.
  • Leaving the US with over $10,000 is a separate American filing — the departure chapter.

Prohibited and restricted

Prohibited outright: narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances, wildlife products, Indian counterfeit currency, maps or literature showing India’s external boundaries incorrectly, goods infringing intellectual property, and specified live birds and animals. E-cigarettes and vapes are banned by their own Act — the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, 2019 bars import of any electronic nicotine or heat-not-burn device, with up to a year in prison or a ₹1 lakh fine for a first offence. Drones in built or kit form have been prohibited for import since 9 February 2022 except under a DGFT authorisation for research, manufacturing or defence; the declaration form asks about them by name. Satellite phones need a Department of Telecommunications licence; Thuraya and Iridium handsets are banned, must be declared, and are cleared only against a licence. Meat, dairy, fish and poultry products, and seeds, plants, fruit and planting material must be declared and may be refused. Pets (two dogs or cats, only under transfer of residence after two years abroad) need an advance no-objection certificate from Animal Quarantine applied for on ATITHI at least seven days before arrival.

Green or red, and the app

Walk through the green channel only if you carry nothing dutiable and nothing on the list above. Report to the red channel if you answer "yes" to any item in questions 16–18 of Form CBD-I: pets, jewellery beyond the allowance, prohibited articles, a television, gold bullion, meat or dairy, seeds or plants, a satellite phone, rupees over ₹25,000, foreign currency over the thresholds, or a drone. The declaration is filed electronically on the ATITHI 2.0 app or ICEGATE up to three days before arrival and can be updated until you land; a family member files for a child. Walking through green with dutiable goods is the offence the Customs Act punishes with confiscation, a redemption fine and penalty, and in serious cases prosecution.

Unaccompanied baggage and detained goods

Baggage sent separately must have been in your possession abroad, be dispatched within a month of your arrival (it may arrive up to two months before you) and is declared on Form CBD-II on ICEGATE; the same allowances apply. Goods customs detains are held on a receipt and can be cleared on duty or re-exported within six months.

7.Leaving the US: lithium batteries, the liquids rule, alcohol in the hold and the $10,000 cash form

Correct or addContents ↑

The United States has no export declaration for a suitcase of gifts, but four American rules bite at the airport and one on the way out of the country.

Lithium batteries

The FAA’s PackSafe rules are the ones the airline enforces at check-in. Spare (uninstalled) lithium batteries, power banks and battery phone cases go in the carry-on bag only, never in checked luggage. Lithium-ion batteries are limited to 100 watt-hours each; with the airline’s approval you may carry up to two spares of 101–160 Wh, and nothing larger. Devices with the battery installed — phones, laptops, cameras, shavers — may be checked but should be switched fully off and protected from being turned on; keep them in the cabin anyway. If your cabin bag is checked at the gate, every power bank must come out of it first. Batteries carried for resale are prohibited outright. Indian carriers and Indian airports apply the same limits and some are stricter about power banks in use on board.

Liquids

At the US security checkpoint, liquids, gels, aerosols, creams and pastes in the cabin bag are limited to 3.4 oz (100 ml) per container in one quart-size bag — the 3-1-1 rule — with exemptions for medicines and baby food. Perfume, syrup, honey, shampoo and sauces in larger bottles go in the checked bag. Duty-free liquids bought airside travel in the sealed tamper-evident bag with the receipt; if you connect through another airport they may be re-screened, so buy them on the last leg.

Alcohol

In checked bags, drinks of 24–70% alcohol are limited to 5 litres per passenger in unopened retail packaging; over 70% (140 proof) cannot be carried at all; under 24% (wine, beer) has no quantity limit. India’s duty-free allowance is 2 litres, so the US rule is rarely the constraint.

Cash over $10,000

Carrying more than $10,000 in currency or monetary instruments out of the United States (or in) requires a FinCEN Form 105, filed electronically or handed to a CBP officer before departure. The threshold is for the group travelling together, not per person — a family carrying $4,000 each over three people must file — and failing to file can mean seizure of the money plus civil or criminal penalties. There is no tax; it is a report. On arrival in India the same cash meets the US$5,000 / US$10,000 declaration thresholds above.

Two things that are not rules but matter

Photograph the serial numbers and receipts of the laptop, camera and watch you are taking — it is how you show on the way back that they left with you (India issues an export certificate for the same purpose when you leave India). And check the Indian list before you pack a drone, a vape or a satellite phone: the US will let them fly, and India will take them at the belt.

8.Airline baggage on US–India routes: pieces, kilos, cabin bags and the fees for going over

Correct or addContents ↑

How much you can take is set by the ticket, not the country, and in 2026 the allowance varies by airline, by fare family and by the date you bought the ticket. The figures below were read in October 2026 from the airlines’ fee calculators as reported in dated third-party tables, because the airlines’ own pages do not open for automated readers; the number on your e-ticket is the only one that counts.

Airline (US–India, Economy unless stated)Checked allowanceNotes
Air IndiaEconomy Value: 1 × 23 kg; Economy Classic and Flex: 2 × 23 kg; Business and First: 2 × 32 kgPiece concept on North America routes; cabin bag 8 kg plus a small personal item; extra-piece and overweight fees in the $130–240 range were being quoted on US routes in 2026 — confirm
UnitedFirst bag free in standard Economy; the second has been charged since April 2022 ($200 then) and ticketing-site tables in June 2026 showed $240 on Delhi–Newark; Basic Economy: no free bag on tickets bought from 12 May 202650 lb (23 kg) per bag; overweight to 70 lb and oversize fees in the hundreds of dollars
AmericanOne free 23 kg bag in Basic and Main Cabin on India itineraries, second about $100; Main Plus and Premium Economy two freeAmerican reaches India on partner-operated flights for most itineraries, and the operating carrier’s rules can apply
DeltaStandard 50 lb (23 kg) per piece in Main and Comfort, 70 lb in Delta One; 62 inches (157 cm) linearDelta sells India mostly on partner metal; check the bag calculator for the operating airline
Gulf and European carriers (via Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Frankfurt, Paris, London)Usually 2 × 23 kg in Economy, 1 × 23 kg on the cheapest faresCabin allowances of 7–8 kg are enforced at Indian airports more than at US ones

The rules of thumb

  • 23 kg = 50 lb and 158 cm / 62 inches total dimensions are the industry’s checked-bag standard; 32 kg / 70 lb is the usual overweight ceiling, above which the bag is refused.
  • A second bag bought in advance is cheaper than at the airport, and both are cheaper than an overweight charge on the first.
  • Cabin weight is the Indian trap. US carriers rarely weigh a cabin bag; Air India and the Gulf carriers do, at 7–8 kg, and the connection in Delhi or Mumbai is where a 14 kg carry-on gets charged.
  • Infants get a reduced allowance and a collapsible pushchair on most airlines; children with a seat get the full one.
  • Codeshares: on a ticket sold by one airline and flown by another, the "most significant carrier" rule decides whose allowance applies on each leg, and the two can differ on the outbound and the return.

Packing to the allowance

Weigh at home with a hanging scale and leave a kilo spare for the airport’s scale. Put the heavy, cheap things (nuts, chocolate, books) in the checked bags and the valuable, light things (laptop, phone, jewellery, medicines, documents, chargers and all batteries) in the cabin bag. Spread gifts across two bags so a lost one is not the whole Diwali; the Diwali in the US page is where the autumn travel rush and its fares get discussed every year. If the pile still does not fit, the next chapter is about the box.

9.Shipping a box or excess baggage from the US: USPS, couriers, Indian cargo agents, duty and GST, and why "gift" no longer works

Correct or addContents ↑

Sending things costs more per kilo than carrying them and attracts duty that a suitcase within the allowance does not, so a box makes sense for three things: what will not fit, what you are sending between visits, and a household move. The options, with US Postal Service prices as published in October 2026.

USPS

  • First-Class Package International Service — packages up to 4 lb (1.8 kg), retail prices from $19.40, the cheapest way to send a small gift; delivery time is not guaranteed.
  • Priority Mail International — by weight from $43.55, or flat-rate: a Medium Flat Rate Box $61.80 and a Large $75.15 at the counter, each up to 20 lb (9 kg) regardless of contents; USPS quotes 6–10 business days to the Indian exchange office, plus Indian customs and India Post delivery. For India the by-weight maximum is 44 lb (20 kg), not the 70 lb the service allows elsewhere.
  • Priority Mail Express International — up to 70 lb, faster, dearer, and it may not contain jewellery, precious metals or watches on the India lane.

USPS’s own India conditions add restrictions that matter for this page: articles of gold or silver, jewellery, coins and banknotes are prohibited by post; consumer electronics for personal use may not exceed ₹50,000 in value per person at a time; perishable or edible items are admitted by airmail only.

Couriers

FedEx, UPS and DHL move a box door to door in days rather than weeks, clear it through Indian customs as a courier consignment and collect the duty from the recipient (or from you, if you pay "duties and taxes paid" at booking). They cost several times the USPS price for the same weight; a 10 kg box of gifts is routinely a three-figure dollar quote. The recipient will be asked for KYC — Aadhaar, passport, PAN or voter ID carrying both identity and address — before release.

Indian excess-baggage and cargo agents

In every US city with a large Indian population there are consolidators who take boxes by air or sea cargo to Indian airports and ports, by the kilo, often with door delivery. They are the cheapest for anything over about 30 kg and the normal route for a household move under the transfer-of-residence allowance (₹1.5 lakh to ₹7.5 lakh of used household goods, duty-free, declared on Form CBD-II within a month of your own arrival). Get three quotes, ask whether the price is door to door, whether Indian clearance and duty are included, and how long sea cargo takes (weeks, and then the port). Pack a packing list in the box and keep one.

The duty on a parcel

This is where most people are surprised. Indian customs charges duty on goods for personal use arriving by post or courier under tariff heading 9804 on the CIF value — goods plus shipping plus insurance. Chennai Customs’ postal FAQ of October 2025 works it out: 10% basic duty, 1% surcharge, and 18% IGST on the duty-paid value, 30.98% in all; a consignment declared as a gift paid 20% duty and 18% IGST, 41.6%. Budget 2026 then halved the tariff rate on all dutiable goods for personal use under 9804 from 20% to 10% from 1 April 2026, which should bring a gift parcel into line with the 30.98% figure — confirm the rate the postman quotes, because the FAQ has not been reissued. Parcels on which the duty would be ₹1,000 or less are released free; refused parcels are returned to the sender; and the duty is collected by India Post at the door or by the courier before delivery. Gold, silver, precious stones, plants, animals and perishables cannot come by post at all.

Why "gift" does not help

Until December 2019 a bona fide gift worth up to ₹5,000 was duty-free. DGFT Notification 35/2015-2020 of 12 December 2019 (clarified by CBIC Circular 4/2020) prohibited the import of goods as gifts through post or courier altogether, except life-saving medicines and rakhis, because e-commerce sellers were labelling everything a gift. A parcel marked "gift" is now either cleared on full duty as an ordinary personal import or refused; writing "gift, no commercial value" on the customs form saves nothing and invites a query. Declare what it is and what it cost.

10.What to bring back from India: spices, pickles, medicines, gold and the US rules at the other end

Correct or addContents ↑

The return bag is the mirror image, and US Customs and Border Protection has its own list.

What travels well to the US

Whole and ground spices, tea, coffee, pickles and chutneys in sealed jars, ghee, papads, ready-to-eat packets, sweets that are commercially packaged, rice and lentils in retail packs (CBP says rice can carry insects and advises against it, so keep it sealed and declared), cotton and silk, handicrafts, books, Ayurvedic preparations in original packaging, spectacles and dental work done while you were there. CBP’s rule is that condiments, vinegars, oils, packaged spices, honey, coffee and tea are generally admissible, and bakery items and certain cheeses may come in.

What does not

Fresh fruit and vegetables (mangoes from the garden included), fresh, dried or canned meat and anything prepared with it (most masala mixes with meat stock, pickles with meat), seeds and plants without a permit, and anything you do not declare. Declare every food item on the CBP form; an undeclared agricultural item is a $300 civil penalty the first time and the food is binned, while a declared one that is not allowed is simply taken.

The US exemption

A returning US resident has an $800 duty-free personal exemption after 48 hours abroad, once every 31 days, which may include one litre of alcohol (21 and over) and 200 cigarettes or 100 cigars; goods above $800 are dutiable, the next $1,000 at a flat rate. Gold jewellery bought in India is legal to bring but it counts against the exemption and is dutiable above it, so carry the receipt and declare it. Medicines bought in India for personal use should be a 90-day supply at most, in original packaging, with a prescription; CBP notes it is generally illegal for a US citizen to import drugs for personal use outside the FDA’s own exceptions, so keep it to what a doctor has prescribed.

Money, both ways

Leaving India, a resident may carry ₹25,000 in rupee notes and take unspent foreign currency out against the Currency Declaration Form if it was declared on the way in. Entering the US with more than $10,000 in currency or instruments means FinCEN Form 105, aggregated across the family.

Paper for the next trip

Before you leave India with the jewellery, camera or laptop you brought in, consider the export certificate (Form CBD-III on ATITHI): it records the item so that bringing it back on the next visit is not a duty conversation, and it is valid for six months or until your first return, whichever is sooner. Travellers who return to India yearly keep a standing list.

The people on the Indian side

Parents send things too. The same Indian postal and courier rules in reverse — India Post, the couriers, the ₹25,000 cash cap, no gold by post — apply to a parcel from Pune to Plano, and US duty applies above the US thresholds; most families find a visiting friend’s suitcase cheaper than either.

11.Ask the community: who carried what last month, and what customs said

Rules are published; practice is reported. Whether the Delhi red channel asked for a receipt for a single sealed phone this month, which Chicago warehouse club had the Diwali chocolate tins first, whether Air India in Newark weighed cabin bags in September, which courier’s Indian broker is answering the phone, and what a particular medicine’s Indian equivalent costs are the questions no official page answers — and the questions that get answered within an hour in the Namaste Community groups for each US city, where the people writing flew last week. Post a question on Ask when you want it kept for the next person: "iPhone 18 Pro, Houston to Hyderabad, October 2026, declared on ATITHI, duty charged ₹x" is worth more than any blog. The Indian businesses directory for the US lists the excess-baggage agents, Indian grocers and parcel shops by city, and the data hub for Indians in the US is where the groups, events and businesses are gathered. If a figure on this page is out of date — and duty rates, allowances and Apple’s prices all move — use the report link on the section and say what you were told, with the date and the airport.

Questions people ask

What is the duty-free allowance from the USA to India in 2026?
Since 2 February 2026 an Indian resident, NRI or OCI holder arriving by air clears used personal effects plus ₹75,000 (about $790) of new goods duty-free, plus one new laptop if over 18, 2 litres of alcohol and 100 cigarettes (or 25 cigars or 125 g of tobacco). A tourist of foreign origin gets ₹25,000. Allowances cannot be pooled between passengers; the excess pays 35% duty plus surcharge, about 38.5%.
Can I carry an iPhone from the USA to India for a relative?
You can, declared, and it is rarely worth it in October 2026. Your own phone in use is a personal effect; a sealed box counts against the ₹75,000 allowance and a second phone is dutiable on its whole value at about 38.5%, which puts a US iPhone 17 ($929, about ₹88,000) above Apple India’s ₹99,900. The iPhone 18 Pro still saves around ₹35,000 before US sales tax. US iPhones are eSIM-only and the warranty may be limited to the country of sale.
How much gold can I take to India from the USA?
Jewellery you wear is a personal effect. After more than a year abroad a woman may bring 40 g and anyone else 20 g of gold jewellery duty-free, by weight, with no value cap since February 2026. Bars and coins get no allowance: a passenger of Indian origin back after at least six months may bring up to 1 kg on payment of duty in foreign currency under Notification 45/2025; everyone else pays full duty, and undeclared gold is seized.
How many laptops can I carry to India duty-free?
One new laptop or notebook per passenger aged 18 or over, over and above the ₹75,000 allowance, under rule 5 of the Baggage Rules, 2026. A laptop you have been using is a personal effect. A second new laptop is dutiable on its full value once the allowance is used, at 35% plus surcharge.
What are the best chocolates to take to India from the USA?
Sealed assortments that divide among a household — individually wrapped squares, truffle boxes, the seasonal tins sold at US warehouse clubs — and dark chocolate, which survives heat better than caramel or cream fillings. Pack them in the middle of the checked bag; there is no customs limit beyond the general allowance and the commercial-quantity test, but thirty identical boxes will be questioned.
How many kilos can I take from the USA to India?
It depends on the airline and the fare, not the country. Air India gives 1 × 23 kg on Economy Value and 2 × 23 kg on Classic and Flex; United and American have moved to one free 23 kg bag in standard economy with the second charged ($240 and about $100 in the June 2026 tables) and none in Basic Economy on United; Gulf carriers usually 2 × 23 kg. Cabin bags are 7–8 kg on Indian and Gulf airlines. The e-ticket is the only figure that counts.
Can I send a parcel from the USA to India instead, and what duty is charged?
Yes. USPS First-Class Package International takes up to 4 lb from $19.40; Priority Mail International to India takes up to 44 lb, from $43.55 by weight or $61.80 for a medium flat-rate box up to 20 lb, in 6–10 business days plus Indian clearance. The recipient pays duty on the goods-plus-shipping value — Chennai Customs’ October 2025 worked example is 30.98% for personal imports (10% duty, 1% surcharge, 18% IGST) and 41.6% for a declared gift, before Budget 2026 cut the tariff rate to 10% from 1 April 2026. Parcels owing ₹1,000 or less are released free.
Does marking a parcel to India as a gift avoid customs duty?
No. India prohibited the import of goods as gifts through post or courier on 12 December 2019 (DGFT Notification 35/2015-2020), except life-saving medicines and rakhis, after e-commerce sellers abused the old ₹5,000 exemption. A "gift" is cleared only on full duty or refused; writing "no commercial value" saves nothing.
What is banned when flying from the USA to India?
Narcotic and psychotropic drugs, e-cigarettes and vapes (banned by the 2019 Act, up to a year in prison for import), drones (import prohibited since February 2022 without a DGFT authorisation), satellite phones without a DoT licence (Thuraya and Iridium are banned), wildlife products, counterfeit currency, and maps showing India’s borders incorrectly. Meat, dairy, seeds and plants must be declared and may be refused; televisions, gold bullion and more than 2 litres of alcohol are never duty-free.
How much cash can I carry from the USA to India?
Rupees: ₹25,000 in notes each way for a resident. Dollars: no limit into India, but a Currency Declaration Form is required when notes exceed US$5,000 or notes plus traveller’s cheques exceed US$10,000. Leaving the United States with more than $10,000 in currency or monetary instruments — counted across a family travelling together — requires FinCEN Form 105, filed before departure.
