Indians in Phoenix: the 2026 guide to Chandler, Tempe, Scottsdale, Gilbert, Mesa and north Phoenix
About 67,000 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Phoenix–Mesa–Chandler metro area — 67,417 in the 2020–2024 American Community Survey, with 24,302 in the city of Phoenix and 12,855 in Chandler, which has the highest share (4.6%) among the Valley’s larger cities. They live where the jobs are — Chandler beside Intel and Microchip, Tempe around Arizona State University, north Phoenix near TSMC Arizona, Scottsdale — rather than on one Indian street; the main places of worship are the Hindu Temple of Arizona in Scottsdale, the BAPS mandir on Black Canyon Highway and the Ekta Mandir in Phoenix, the ISKCON temple in Chandler, the Maha Ganapati Temple in Maricopa and the Guru Nanak Dwara gurdwara, and Patel Brothers has stores in Phoenix and Chandler. The practical facts to know first are that a car is close to essential, a one-bedroom costs about $1,200 in Phoenix and $1,400 in Chandler (Zumper, 2026), Arizona taxes income at a flat 2.5%, and Phoenix had 39 days at or above 110°F in summer 2026. Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026, with free public celebrations in Phoenix on 24 October and in Tempe on 31 October.
About 4.86 million people who identify as Asian Indian (alone or with another group) live in the US: 4,856,473 in the 2019–2023 American Community Survey. That is a national figure, not one for Phoenix alone. Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2019–2023, table B02018
1.Phoenix at a glance
Correct or addContents ↑The Phoenix area — the Valley of the Sun — has a mid-sized Indian community spread across a metro area measured in miles, with no single Indian district. About 67,000 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or in any combination with another group, live in the Phoenix–Mesa–Chandler metro area, which covers Maricopa and Pinal counties: 67,417 in the US Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, 1.3% of the area’s 5,028,754 residents, with a margin of error of ±3,446. That is the latest release; most of the site’s other US city pages quote the 2019–2023 survey, so compare metro areas with that in mind. The same survey counts 42,230 residents of the metro area who were born in India. Maricopa County holds 66,426 of the 75,273 Asian Indians in Arizona, 88%; the city of Phoenix has 24,302, and Chandler 12,855, which is 4.6% of Chandler’s residents and the highest share among the Valley’s larger cities. The survey is a sample, so every figure is an estimate.
The shape follows the jobs. The community sits around the semiconductor plants and bank campuses of Chandler, Arizona State University in Tempe, and the offices of north Phoenix and Scottsdale; the temples are scattered from Scottsdale to Chandler to Maricopa, a long drive from most of the families who use them. A car is close to compulsory, the county’s heat-relief season runs from 1 May to 30 September, and Arizona’s income tax is a flat 2.5%, the three facts that change a move here most.

The national rules — visas and the H-1B lottery, the Social Security number, federal tax, remittances, the OCI card and Indian passports — are in the site’s US topic guides and are linked rather than repeated: jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passport renewal and sending money to India. This page is about the Valley: Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Scottsdale, Peoria and Glendale.
2.The community, and where it lives
Correct or addContents ↑Indian Phoenix is younger than Indian New York or Chicago, and its institutions show it. The first gurdwara in Arizona, Guru Nanak Dwara in central Phoenix, was established in 1970. Almost everything else dates from around the turn of the century: the Hindu Temple of Arizona was founded in 2000 and held its first weekly Hanuman puja on 10 July 2001; BAPS dedicated its first Valley mandir in Mesa on 5 November 2000 and inaugurated its present mandir on Black Canyon Highway in Phoenix on 1 November 2014; the Maha Ganapati Temple of Arizona was set up as a non-profit in November 2000 and consecrated its murtis in May 2008; Chinmaya Mission Phoenix began in 2005; and the Jain Center of Greater Phoenix dedicated its temple in December 2008. Even the national Association of Kannada Kootas of America was formed in February 1998 after a Kannada conference held in Phoenix. The pattern is a community that organised itself in the 1990s and built its own buildings in the 2000s, and that has grown since with the technology, finance and university jobs.
Study is part of the picture. Open Doors counted 31,386 international students in Arizona in 2024–25, the eleventh-largest number in the country, and India was first among their countries of origin at 51% of the total, ahead of China at 13.9%; Arizona State University alone hosted 20,368 of them.
The numbers
Counts of people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or in any combination, from the 2020–2024 American Community Survey (table B02018), with the survey’s margin of error, the share of each place’s residents, and the residents of each place born in India (table B05006).
| Area | Asian Indian | Margin of error | Share of residents | Born in India |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix–Mesa–Chandler metro area | 67,417 | ±3,446 | 1.3% | 42,230 |
| Maricopa County | 66,426 | ±3,493 | 1.5% | 41,835 |
| Arizona | 75,273 | ±3,608 | 1.0% | — |
| City of Phoenix | 24,302 | ±2,453 | 1.5% | 15,387 |
| Chandler | 12,855 | ±1,419 | 4.6% | 8,189 |
| Tempe | 8,015 | ±1,362 | 4.3% | 5,630 |
| Scottsdale | 5,235 | ±1,220 | 2.1% | 3,175 |
| Gilbert | 4,516 | ±905 | 1.6% | 2,615 |
| Peoria | 4,035 | ±1,133 | 2.0% | 2,696 |
| Mesa | 1,702 | ±422 | 0.3% | 1,052 |
| Glendale | 1,701 | ±560 | 0.7% | 991 |
The shares are the survey’s Asian Indian count divided by each place’s total population in the same survey. Chandler and Tempe stand out; Mesa, with more than half a million residents, is only 0.3% Asian Indian. Small areas have wide margins, so the ZIP code areas below are a guide to where people live, not a ranking.
| ZIP code area (2020–2024) | Asian Indian | Margin of error | Share of residents |
|---|---|---|---|
| 85281, Tempe near the university | 4,706 | ±1,084 | 6.5% |
| 85286, Chandler | 3,260 | ±794 | 6.4% |
| 85383, Peoria | 3,192 | ±1,061 | 4.3% |
| 85249, Chandler | 2,751 | ±569 | 5.6% |
| 85254, Scottsdale and north Phoenix | 2,600 | ±800 | 5.7% |
| 85027, north Phoenix | 2,482 | ±740 | 6.3% |
| 85248, Chandler | 2,372 | ±690 | 6.4% |
| 85085, north Phoenix | 2,294 | ±771 | 7.3% |
| 85226, west Chandler | 2,007 | ±571 | 4.7% |
| 85260, Scottsdale | 1,956 | ±1,032 | 4.9% |
| 85048, Ahwatukee, Phoenix | 1,612 | ±1,253 | 4.7% |
| 85050, north Phoenix | 1,551 | ±446 | 4.7% |
| 85298, south Gilbert | 1,338 | ±447 | 3.0% |
Where Indians actually live
- Chandler — the biggest concentration by share. Intel’s Ocotillo campus, Microchip, the bank offices of the Price Corridor and Chandler Unified’s schools are all here; three Chandler ZIP code areas (85286, 85249 and 85248) are 5.6% to 6.4% Asian Indian, and the ISKCON temple is on Weber Drive.
- Tempe — Arizona State University’s main campus, students and early-career workers around ZIP 85281 (6.5%), and families further south near the Kyrene schools.
- North Phoenix — Desert Ridge, the American Express campus and the TSMC Arizona site; ZIP 85085 has the highest share in the table (7.3%), and Patel Brothers, City of Spice and Maya’s Kitchen are on Bell Road.
- Scottsdale — the Airpark and SkySong offices and the Hindu Temple of Arizona on Hayden Road.
- Gilbert and Mesa — family subdivisions in south Gilbert (3.0% in 85298), the BAPS mandir’s first Valley home in Mesa and the Chinmaya Mission hall on Eldorado.
- Ahwatukee — the part of Phoenix south of South Mountain, served by the Kyrene and Tempe Union schools.
- Peoria and Glendale — the north-west Valley, with Peoria’s ZIP 85383 at 4.3% and the Nishkam Seva gurdwara beside Loop 101.
Languages and origins
No survey splits the Valley’s Indians by state or mother tongue, so any claim that Phoenix is mostly one region is a guess. What the institutions show is breadth: Venkateswara at the Hindu Temple of Arizona and Balaji, Ayyappa and Subramanya at the Maha Ganapati Temple; Gujarati classes at the BAPS mandir; Sikh programmes at the gurdwaras; City of Spice on Bell Road, whose owners come from Hyderabad and Gujarat; dishes from southern India at Vayal’s on Thomas Road; and a Nepali family’s kitchen at Maya’s Kitchen. The groups described below are where the current associations by language surface.
The rule of thumb: Chandler, Tempe or north Phoenix for a first rental near the jobs and a temple; Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale or Ahwatukee once there are children and a school district to choose; Tempe or central Phoenix if the light rail matters more than a garden.
3.Your first two weeks in Phoenix
Correct or addContents ↑The national steps — the Social Security number, a bank account without a credit history, federal tax withholding, keeping your visa status — are in the jobs guide and the cost-of-living guide. This is the Phoenix order of things.
- A furnished room or a short stay, not a lease. Landlords want proof of income and a credit check, and you have neither on day one. A room in a shared flat in Tempe or Chandler, or a month in a furnished flat, buys the fortnight you need. Never transfer money for a place you have not stood in, and if you arrive between June and September, book somewhere with air conditioning that works.
- A hire that clears E-Verify. Arizona law (A.R.S. 23-214) requires every employer to check each new hire’s work eligibility through E-Verify, so the name on your passport, your I-9 and your Social Security record must match; sort out any mismatch with HR before day one.
- The Social Security number. Apply at a Social Security office once your status allows; the licence, the lease and the second bank account all get easier when it arrives.
- A bank account and a US number. Banks open accounts with a passport, visa papers and an address; a prepaid SIM bridges the first week. Remittance apps and their fees are compared in sending money to India.
- A way to get around. Most of the Valley needs a car; light rail covers only Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa. Valley Metro’s Smart Fare, with a Copper card or the app, caps daily and monthly spending; see getting around. Check the Arizona driving rules below before you drive on an Indian licence.
- Health cover from the first day. An employer plan usually starts on day one or the first of the next month; check which. If you have no employer cover, read health before the window closes on 15 December for cover from 1 January.
- Utilities and internet. Ask the landlord whether the flat is served by APS or by Salt River Project (SRP), and what last summer’s bills were; ask whether water, sewer and rubbish are in the rent. Book the internet installation the day you sign.
- A heat plan. Water and a shade for the car, an appointment to service the air conditioning, and a look at heat and summer before the first 110°F day.
- Know your state tax. Arizona’s income tax is a flat 2.5%; if you move in mid-year you file a part-year return. See what Phoenix costs.
- The consulate, only when you need it. Passport, OCI and visa files go through VFS Global, not a counter in Phoenix, and the consulate for Arizona changed in 2025–26; read the consulate section before you post anything.
- A Sunday at a mandir, a gurdwara or Patel Brothers. An evening arti at the BAPS mandir, langar at Guru Nanak Dwara or a Saturday morning at Patel Brothers will produce the phone number of a decent tax preparer, a dentist and a landlord faster than any search — and the groups on Namaste Community (below) do the same without knowing anyone first.
4.Neighbourhoods and renting: 2026 rents by area, the deposit rule and Arizona’s tenant law
Correct or addContents ↑Rents are mixed across the Valley in 2026: down in Phoenix and Mesa, roughly flat in Gilbert, up in Scottsdale and, on Zumper’s city page, up about 3% in Chandler. Zumper’s National Rent Report for September 2026, published on 28 September, has the median one-bedroom in Phoenix at $1,200, down 4.0% in a year, and the two-bedroom at $1,470, down 4.5%, against national medians of $1,518 and $1,903. Mesa is $1,180 and $1,440, Gilbert $1,540 and $1,930, and Scottsdale $1,830 and $2,500, up 4.6% and 7.3% in a year. Chandler and Tempe are not in that report; Zumper’s own city pages, read on 23 October 2026 (they say they were updated on 22 October and use a rolling 30-day window of listings, houses included), give Chandler $1,399 for a one-bedroom and $1,800 for a two-bedroom, and Tempe $1,250 and $1,560. For all sizes and property types, the same pages show a median of $2,322 in Chandler (up 3%), $2,300 in Gilbert, $1,869 in Tempe, $1,650 in Phoenix and Mesa and $3,000 in Scottsdale; the pages mix the words median and average and disagree with themselves on small points, so read them as snapshots. Beside them is the official survey: the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 median gross rent, the middle rent paid by every renter household, including long-standing leases, which runs below what a newcomer is quoted.
| Area | Who lives there | Advertised 1-bed / 2-bed (Zumper) | Rent paid by all renters (ACS 2020–2024) | Median home value (ACS 2020–2024) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Phoenix (city) | North Phoenix near TSMC, Amex and Desert Ridge; Ahwatukee; central Phoenix | $1,200 / $1,470 (September report); all sizes $1,650 | $1,582 | $420,700 |
| Chandler | Intel, Microchip and bank staff; the highest Indian share | $1,399 / $1,800; all sizes $2,322 | $1,902 | $507,800 |
| Tempe | ASU students, early-career workers, families near Kyrene | $1,250 / $1,560; all sizes $1,869 | $1,743 | $455,400 |
| Gilbert | Families in subdivisions; Gilbert Public Schools and Higley | $1,540 / $1,930 (September report) | $2,110 | $575,100 |
| Scottsdale | Airpark and SkySong offices; the Hindu Temple on Hayden Road | $1,830 / $2,500 (September report); all sizes $3,000 | $2,013 | $789,800 |
| Mesa | Cheaper; the Chinmaya Mission hall | $1,180 / $1,440 (September report) | $1,620 | $408,000 |
| Peoria | North-west Valley families | No Zumper figure used | $1,843 | $463,600 |
| Glendale | North-west Valley; the Nishkam Seva gurdwara | No Zumper figure used | $1,528 | $387,500 |
Zumper’s neighbourhood averages (all unit sizes) show how much the address matters: Desert Ridge in north Phoenix $3,300, Kierland $3,950, Tramonto $2,170 and Downtown Phoenix $2,035; in Chandler Downtown $2,090, Fox Crossing $2,559, Tremaine Park $2,650, Sun Groves $2,700 and Springfield Lakes $2,850; in Tempe University Heights $1,350, Downtown Tempe $1,872 and Kyrene Superstition $1,995.
Three readings of the table. First, on both the one-bedroom and the two-bedroom measure the order from cheapest to dearest is Mesa, Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, and the gap between Mesa and Scottsdale is about $650 for a one-bedroom. Second, Chandler is cheaper than Gilbert or Scottsdale and has the highest Indian share, beside the Intel and Microchip jobs, which is why it is a natural first address for a family. Third, sharing a two-bedroom costs each person less than a one-bedroom alone almost everywhere here.
How renting works in Arizona
- The deposit. A landlord may not demand or receive security, prepaid rent included, of more than one and a half months’ rent, and must state in writing the purpose of any non-refundable fee; any fee not designated non-refundable is refundable (A.R.S. 33-1321). Within 14 days, excluding Saturdays, Sundays and legal holidays, after the tenancy ends, you have handed back possession and you have asked, the landlord must send an itemised list of deductions and any money due, by first-class mail to your last known address unless you agree otherwise in writing; if you do not dispute the list within 60 days of its being mailed, it becomes final, and a tenant can recover twice the amount wrongfully withheld. So make the request in writing, give a forwarding address, take dated photographs at move-in and ask for the move-in condition form the statute requires.
- No rent control. Arizona law forbids cities and towns from controlling rents on private housing (A.R.S. 33-1329), so rent can rise at renewal by whatever the landlord asks; read the renewal terms and the notice period in the lease before you sign.
- Repairs and cooling. The landlord must keep the premises fit and habitable and must supply reasonable air-conditioning or cooling, where such units are installed and offered, when seasonal weather requires it (A.R.S. 33-1324). If a landlord fails to supply cooling, the tenant may give reasonable notice and then use the remedies in 33-1364, including recovering damages or finding substitute housing; in a Phoenix summer, get complaints about the air conditioning in writing on the first day.
- Entry and non-payment. A landlord must give at least two days’ notice before entering, except in an emergency (33-1343). If rent is unpaid, the landlord may give written notice and, if it is not paid within five days, begin eviction proceedings (33-1368).
- Buying. Most homes in Chandler and Gilbert sit in homeowners’ associations with monthly fees and rules; ask for the covenants before you offer. Arizona’s average property-tax rate is among the lowest in the country, 0.48% of assessed value on the Tax Foundation’s figure, but the sales tax is not low (see what Phoenix costs).
Scams to expect
A flat at half the going rate offered by an “owner abroad” who wants the deposit before a viewing; a “broker” on a WhatsApp group who asks for a fee for a listing; a room in a house with no lease; a request to pay by gift card or an app that cannot be traced. Nobody legitimate asks you to pay to see a flat. A demand for more than one and a half months’ rent as security, prepaid rent included, is outside the statute.
5.Getting around: the car, Valley Metro, the light rail and the airport
Correct or addContents ↑Phoenix is a city of cars: the grid is wide, the summer is long and most of the Indian neighbourhoods, temples and shops sit on arterial roads with a strip centre beside them. You can live without a car in central Phoenix, Tempe or Mesa near the light rail; in Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale and the north and west of the Valley a car is close to essential.
Valley Metro
Valley Metro’s Smart Fare lets a rider tap a Copper card or the Valley Metro app and never pay more than the cap; fares have not risen since 2013. A local bus or light-rail ride is $2. The agency was proposing a revised fare structure from 1 January 2027, with a public hearing in June 2026 and a further public meeting on 8 July; any change needs an equity analysis and approval by the regional transit board, so check the agency’s page before relying on the table below.
| Fare (Smart Fare) | Local bus and light rail | Express and RAPID |
|---|---|---|
| Per ride | $2 | — |
| Daily cap | $4 | $6.50 |
| Weekly cap | $20 | — |
| Monthly cap (calendar month) | $64 | $104 |
| Copper card | $4 to issue; the reduced-fare card is $0 |
Reduced fares are available on local bus and light rail for riders aged 6 to 18, seniors from 65, people with disabilities and Medicare cardholders. Riders choose a Copper card or the app for each account, not both, and a one-ride cash fare is still sold on buses and at light-rail machines.
The rail
Valley Metro’s light rail is about 35 miles, with the A Line running from the Downtown Phoenix Hub through Tempe to Gilbert Road and Main Street in Mesa, the B Line from Metro Parkway in north Phoenix to Baseline Road and Central Avenue, and a streetcar in Tempe; the South Central Extension opened on 7 June 2025. It serves only Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa: Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale, Peoria and Glendale are on bus routes. The PHX Sky Train links Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport to the 44th Street and Washington light-rail station.
Driving
Petrol is dearer than the national average at the moment: AAA’s figures for 22 October 2026 are $4.56 a gallon for regular in Arizona and $4.54 in the Phoenix–Mesa area, against $4.27 nationally, and the figures move week to week. The Arizona Department of Transportation’s Motor Vehicle Division lists Canada, Germany, South Korea and Taiwan as the places whose licence holders are exempt from the written and road tests; for an Indian licence both tests apply, so book early. You must show that your presence in the US is authorised, and the licence expires with the document that proves it. Registering a car adds a vehicle licence tax calculated from the car’s value, and car insurance is compulsory.
Airport and the monsoon
Sky Harbor is the Valley’s airport and the light rail reaches it. The summer monsoon, officially 15 June to 30 September, brings sudden storms and dust storms; the state’s advice is described under heat and summer.
6.Work and employers: Intel, TSMC, Microchip, the universities, finance and aerospace
Correct or addContents ↑The Valley’s economy leans on semiconductors, finance and back-office operations, aerospace and defence, health care, and Arizona State University. Chandler’s own list of its leading employers, published in 2024, shows the mix: Intel (12,000), Wells Fargo (5,500), Chandler Unified School District (4,900), Bank of America (3,600), Chandler Regional Medical Center of Dignity Health (3,000), Northrop Grumman (2,150), Microchip Technology, whose headquarters is in Chandler (1,700), NXP (1,700), PayPal (1,500), Insight Enterprises, a Fortune 500 IT company that moved its headquarters to Chandler (1,400) and Verizon Wireless (1,400). The city’s current table of leading private employers lists Intel at about 10,000.
| Employer | What and where | Fact, with its date |
|---|---|---|
| Intel | Ocotillo campus, Chandler | The city’s July 2026 business news says Intel has completed Fab 52, the fifth high-volume fab on the campus, producing Panther Lake chips on its 18A process; about 10,000 employees in Chandler on the city’s current table, 12,000 on its 2024 list |
| TSMC Arizona | North Phoenix campus | More than 3,500 employees; the first fab has been in volume production since late 2024 and the second, built, is expected in volume production in 2027; a $265 billion plan across 12 facilities (City of Phoenix, 16 July 2026) |
| Microchip Technology | Headquarters, Chandler | About 1,700 employees in Chandler (city list, 2024) |
| Wells Fargo, Bank of America, PayPal | Financial-services employers in Chandler | 5,500, 3,600 and 1,500 employees (city list, 2024) |
| American Express | Desert Ridge campus, north Phoenix | The company’s Phoenix careers page calls it one of the largest employers in the Valley |
| Honeywell Aerospace | Headquarters, Phoenix | The spin-off from Honeywell was completed on 29 June 2026 and the company, listed on Nasdaq as HONA, is headquartered in Phoenix; Honeywell also leased a 200,000-square-foot plant in west Chandler (city, July 2026) |
| Arizona State University | Tempe and other campuses | About 14,600 international students were expected for autumn 2025 (ASU, August 2025); a local report on 13 August 2026 put the autumn 2026 figure near 11,000 |
| Banner Health, Dignity Health | Hospitals across the Valley, including Banner Ocotillo Medical Center and Chandler Regional Medical Center | Banner’s Chandler centre opened in 2020 with 124 beds; Dignity’s Chandler Regional added a 96-bed tower in 2021 (city, 2024) |
Indian IT-services firms are present on a smaller scale than the Valley’s chip and finance employers. Infosys opened a technology and innovation hub at ASU’s SkySong centre in Scottsdale in September 2019 with a plan to employ 1,000 Arizonans by 2023, and Mastek, the Indian software group, bought the Chandler consultancy MST Solutions in 2022 and opened an innovation hub in Chandler in March 2023; the city’s list puts Mastek at about 100 employees there. Both are dated, so check an employer’s current size and its record in the public sponsorship data before you accept; the jobs guide shows how.
What Arizona pays
The state minimum wage is $15.15 an hour in 2026 and $15.65 from 1 January 2027, set by inflation. The MIT Living Wage Calculator, updated on 15 February 2026 from state-level wage data, gives typical annual salaries in Arizona of $109,320 for computer and mathematical occupations, $107,450 for architecture and engineering, $131,370 for management, $87,470 for business and financial operations and $109,860 for health-care practitioners. Averages hide a wide spread; what an H-1B salary leaves after federal tax and FICA is in the take-home pay table, and Arizona’s own tax is a flat 2.5%.
The visa question
The H-1B is the main route and the subject of 2026’s policy fight: the lottery weighted towards higher wage levels since 27 February 2026, the employer’s fees and the $100,000 payment, struck down by two courts but not withdrawn. All of it is national and set out in the jobs guide, with the legal routes, where the jobs are and the consultancy risks.
Scams
“Pay for a guaranteed job and a visa” is the oldest fraud in the community and often arrives through a WhatsApp group or a consultancy that wants a training fee. Nobody can sell you a job in America; the scams section of the jobs guide lists the patterns.
7.What Phoenix costs in 2026: tax, rent, petrol, electricity and a family budget
Correct or addContents ↑Phoenix is cheaper than the coasts and dearer than it was. The two figures that differ most from a Bay Area or New York budget are the tax, which is low, and the cost of keeping a house or flat cool, which is not.
Tax
Arizona has had a flat income tax rate of 2.5% since tax year 2023, according to AARP’s state tax guide updated on 28 January 2026, and the state Department of Revenue’s 2026 forms still use it. At that rate a salary of $120,000 owes $3,000 before deductions, and less once Arizona’s standard deduction is taken; California’s top rate is 13.3% and Texas and Washington have none. Arizona’s budget, signed on 13 June 2026, conformed the state to the federal tax changes, with no state tax on tips or overtime from 1 July and a larger standard deduction, but reporting on it does not mention a change in the rate. Part-year residents are taxed on their income while they live in the state.
The state sales tax is 5.6% and cities and counties add their own; the combined average is 8.52% on the Tax Foundation’s figure, and Arizona does not tax most groceries or prescription medicines. The average property-tax rate is 0.48% of assessed value.
A budget
The MIT Living Wage Calculator for the Phoenix–Mesa–Chandler area, updated on 15 February 2026, prices a basic budget without luxuries. A single adult needs about $25.47 an hour, or $52,974 a year before tax, with housing at $17,574 a year and transport at $8,633. A household of two adults and two children needs $90,485 before tax with one earner, or $121,972 with two earning $29.32 an hour each; its housing is $22,181 a year, its medical costs $9,543, and child care for two children $24,525 a year if both parents work, or $12,263 for one child. These are estimates of basic needs, not of the way a household with a salary above the median lives, and the national take-home pay table shows what a technology salary leaves.
| Item | Figure |
|---|---|
| Median gross rent of all renters, metro area (ACS 2020–2024) | $1,702 |
| Median home value, metro area (ACS 2020–2024) | $440,900 |
| Median household income, metro area (ACS 2020–2024) | $88,301; Chandler $108,095, Gilbert $122,551, Scottsdale $110,886, Phoenix $81,332, Tempe $79,663 |
| Regular petrol, Phoenix–Mesa (AAA, 22 October 2026) | $4.54 a gallon |
| Minimum wage | $15.15 (2026), $15.65 (2027) |
| Basic budget, single adult (MIT, 2026) | $52,974 a year before tax |
| Basic budget, two adults and two children, one earner (MIT, 2026) | $90,485 a year before tax |
Electricity and water
Two utilities supply the Valley’s electricity: APS and Salt River Project (SRP), depending on the address. A flat’s summer bill is the largest surprise for a newcomer, and it depends on the size of the unit, its age and insulation, and the price plan. APS asked the Arizona Corporation Commission in June 2025 for a rate rise of about 14%, which it said would add about $20 a month to a typical residential bill; SRP considered a temporary 3% cut for the summer 2026 billing cycles, about $5.57 a month. Neither was confirmed in the sources used here, so ask the landlord for last year’s bills and check each utility’s current rates. Water and sewer are billed by the city.
Where the Indian saving is
Groceries. A month of atta, dal, rice, spices and vegetables bought from Patel Brothers or another Indian grocer costs much less than the same in small packets from a supermarket, and Arizona taxes most groceries not at all. Sending money home is cheaper by bank transfer than by cash; the remittance guide explains why since the 2026 remittance tax.
8.Heat and summer: what 110°F means for a newcomer
Correct or addContents ↑Heat is what sets Phoenix apart from the site’s other US city guides, and it deserves to be planned for rather than endured. KJZZ’s count of Phoenix’s summer of 2026, from 1 June to 31 August, found 39 days at or above 110°F (7 in June, 14 in July, 18 in August) and 89 days at or above 100°F, a highest temperature of 117°F on 24 July and a first 110°F day on 13 June. It was the hottest summer on record statewide and the second-hottest on record for Phoenix, so plan an arrival date with that calendar in mind.
What it does to people
Heat kills here, and the pattern is known. Maricopa County recorded 645 heat-related deaths in 2023, 608 in 2024 and 430 in 2025, according to KTAR’s July 2026 report of the county’s data; roughly half of each year’s dead were people who were homeless, and most of the rest were older adults on fixed incomes and outdoor workers. The same rules apply to everyone: do not walk or exercise outdoors in the afternoon from June to September, keep water in the car, never leave a child or a pet in a parked car, and learn the signs of heat illness. Valley fever, a lung infection caught from soil dust, is also local: Maricopa County’s page lists 10,916 cases in 2024 and a preliminary 8,552 for 2025; it usually begins as a lung infection with flu-like symptoms, so a cough, fatigue or joint pain that lasts more than a week is worth mentioning to a doctor.
Living with it
- The air conditioning is not optional. Before you sign, ask how old the system is, who services it and what last summer’s bill was. Arizona law requires a landlord to supply reasonable cooling where it is installed and offered (see renting); report a failure in writing the same day.
- Choose the address for shade and parking. Covered parking and shade trees make a difference in a flat or a house; ask about both.
- Time your day. Outdoor errands move to the early morning and the evening, and most of the temples listed below close in the afternoon and reopen in the evening.
- The car. A windshield shade and a check of the tyres, battery and air conditioning before May are sensible; do not leave electronics or medicines in a hot car.
- Cooling centres. Maricopa County’s Heat Relief Network ran from 1 May to 30 September in 2026 with more than 200 cooled spaces, respite sites and hydration stations; its map is at hrn.azmag.gov and 2-1-1 helps find one. Funding for the network has been temporary, so confirm next year’s season.
The monsoon
The monsoon season runs officially from 15 June to 30 September and brings sudden thunderstorms and dust storms. The Arizona Department of Transportation’s “Pull Aside, Stay Alive” advice is not to drive into a dust storm; if you cannot avoid one, pull off the road, turn off the lights including the flashers, set the parking brake, take your foot off the brake and stay buckled in until it passes.
9.Health: insurance, hospitals and where to turn
Correct or addContents ↑American health care runs on insurance, and the first job in Phoenix is to know what yours is. An employer plan is the normal route for H-1B, L-1 and most professional arrivals, with a premium taken from each pay cheque and a deductible before the plan pays; students are covered by their university’s plan. What a family plan costs in 2026, what an emergency-room visit bills and how to insure parents visiting on a tourist visa are covered in the cost-of-living guide. Choose an in-network primary-care doctor in the first month; an urgent-care centre is far cheaper than an emergency room for anything that is not an emergency.
If you are not covered
- The federal marketplace. Arizona buyers use HealthCare.gov. The National Association of Insurance Commissioners’ guide of 20 October 2026 gives open enrolment as 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027, with a plan chosen by 15 December 2026 for cover from 1 January; some state marketplaces use other dates, so read the HealthCare.gov page for yours. Subsidies and eligibility for visa holders changed under the federal law of 2025, so check what your status qualifies for rather than relying on a friend’s experience from last year.
- AHCCCS, Arizona’s Medicaid programme, generally requires Arizona residence, US citizenship or a qualifying immigration status, a Social Security number and an income within the limit, and its rules for some immigrant groups changed in October 2026. Ask before you assume you qualify, and before you enrol in any means-tested benefit; the national jobs guide covers the status rules.
- Community help. Dial 2-1-1 for local services, 911 for an emergency and 988 for the suicide and crisis line.
Hospitals and doctors
Banner Health and Dignity Health both have large hospitals in Chandler: Banner’s Ocotillo Medical Center, which opened in 2020 with 124 beds in a 240,000-square-foot building, and Dignity Health’s Chandler Regional Medical Center, which added a 96-bed tower in 2021 and has broken ground on a 100,000-square-foot ambulatory centre. HonorHealth has leased 50,000 square feet in the Price Corridor for a cancer centre and other services. Which doctors and hospitals are in network depends on your plan, so look them up before you choose one. Doctors who speak your language are easiest to find through the groups below.
Heat and dust
Heat illness and Valley fever are the two Arizona-specific health risks; both are described under heat and summer.
10.Schools, school choice, the ESA programme and childcare
Correct or addContents ↑Arizona’s public schools are run by school districts, not by the city, and a district boundary is usually the reason for a rent. The Valley’s districts include Chandler Unified, Kyrene (which serves pre-kindergarten to grade 8 across all of Ahwatukee and parts of Chandler, Guadalupe, Tempe and the Gila River Indian Community), Tempe Union for high schools, Gilbert Public Schools, Scottsdale Unified and Mesa Public Schools. Three features of the system differ from many states.
Open enrolment
Arizona law (A.R.S. 15-816) lets a student apply to a school outside their attendance boundary, within a district or between districts. Chandler Unified’s own page says acceptance depends on site capacity and the student’s prior discipline, grades and attendance, that applications must be approved before registering, and that the district does not provide transport for open-enrolment students; capacity data is updated every 12 weeks. Kyrene says enrolment for 2027–28 begins on 12 January 2027. If you live in the boundary of a school, you register there without an open-enrolment application.
Letter grades: read them with care
The Arizona Department of Education issues A to F letter grades to schools, and they are not a reliable guide on their own. An Auditor General’s report in summer 2026 found that the grades do not clearly communicate school performance and that about three-quarters of schools got an A or B; in August the State Board of Education voted to remove bonus points from the grades, and the legislature has told it to give each component — proficiency, growth, graduation rate, college and career readiness — its own letter. A final decision on the method could come by the end of 2026. Visit a school and look at its test results and course offerings, not only its letter.
Empowerment Scholarship Accounts
Arizona’s Empowerment Scholarship Accounts (ESAs) have been open to every K–12 student since 2022. The state’s counter showed 100,208 students in the week before 23 January 2026, and the Common Sense Institute warned that the cost could approach $1 billion in the 2026 fiscal year. An account is public money a family can spend on private-school tuition, curriculum or other approved costs, in place of a district school place. Eligibility rules, the award for your child and the effect of your immigration status are set by the Department of Education, so read its ESA pages before counting on one.
Weekend and language schools
Children’s classes are run by many of the places in this guide: Chinmaya Mission Phoenix teaches Bala Vihar in Mesa; the BAPS mandir runs children’s and youth assemblies and Gujarati classes on Saturday afternoons; the Hindu Temple of Arizona started free Hindi classes for children in its early years; and ISKCON Phoenix runs a Sunday school. Timetables change every term, so ask the desk or the groups below.
Childcare and universities
Childcare is a large cost: the MIT Living Wage Calculator puts it at $12,263 a year for one child and $24,525 for two when both parents work. For students, ASU, the University of Arizona in Tucson and Chandler-Gilbert Community College draw large Indian cohorts; the rules for F-1 students are in the jobs guide, and ASU’s international enrolment fell from about 14,600 in autumn 2025 to roughly 11,000 in autumn 2026 on a local news report, which cited visa delays and changed immigration policy.
11.Indian groceries, sweets, restaurants and where to eat
Correct or addContents ↑Phoenix has no single Indian high street. The grocers, restaurants and sweet shops are in strip centres along arterial roads: Bell Road in north Phoenix, Apache Boulevard in Tempe, Arizona Avenue and Frye Road in Chandler, Ray Road in Gilbert and Scottsdale Road in the north.
The big grocer
Patel Brothers has two Arizona stores, according to its own locations page: 2320 East Bell Road, Suite 120, Phoenix 85022, (480) 219-7820, open daily 10am to 8pm; and 1315 South Arizona Avenue, Chandler 85286, (480) 821-0811, open daily 11am to 8pm. The Chandler store, 30,000 square feet, opened on 4 April 2019. Hours change on holidays, so check before a Diwali shop.
Independent Indian grocers operate alongside it, and their names and addresses change faster than a guide can follow, so look them up in the directory below and ask in the groups.
Where to eat, by area
These are the Indian restaurants named in the Phoenix New Times’ list of ten for the Valley on 15 January 2026, with the address and the point the paper made about each; the list is one newspaper’s view, so treat it as a place to start.
- Phoenix — City of Spice, 2945 East Bell Road, a strip-centre restaurant whose owners come from Hyderabad and Gujarat, known for Apollo fish; Maya’s Kitchen Indian Cuisine, 2948 East Bell Road, run by the Pokhrel family since 2023, with a short northern Indian menu and their Nepali heritage; Vayal’s Indian Kitchen, 507 West Thomas Road, which began as a food truck in 2022 and has had a permanent home since 2024, serving dishes from southern India including uthappam and parotta.
- Tempe — The Dhaba, 1872 Apache Boulevard, open since 2003 and serving Punjabi cooking with thali plates; Bahaara Indian Kitchen, 9920 South Rural Road, Suite A105, which opened in May 2025 with northern Indian dishes by a chef trained at Bukhara in Delhi.
- Chandler — Feringhee Modern Indian Cuisine, 3491 West Frye Road, which the paper credits as the first fine-dining Indian restaurant in the Valley.
- Gilbert — Tap N Tikka, 25 East Ray Road, a beer bar with tandoori platters and thalis.
- Scottsdale and Paradise Valley — Indibar, 6208 North Scottsdale Road, a fine-dining room, and Peacock Indian Bar & Grill, 17025 North Scottsdale Road.
- Glendale and Surprise — Haldi Indian Cuisine, 18561 North 59th Avenue, Suite 122, Glendale, and 13761 West Bell Road, Suite 213, Surprise.
Temple and gurdwara meals
Guru Nanak Dwara serves langar after its Sunday programme and on Friday evenings, and the Nishkam Seva Gurdwara Sahib has a daily programme from 5:30 am; times are in temples and worship. The businesses listed under this section are the ones on Namaste Community’s directory — browse the Indian businesses in the US, add the shop that is missing, and review the one that saved your Diwali.

12.Temples, gurdwaras, the Jain Center and the Chinmaya Mission
Correct or addContents ↑The Valley has Hindu temples from Scottsdale to Maricopa, a Jain temple and gurdwaras at both ends. They are far apart, so most families choose one near home and travel for festivals. Confirm times before you go; they change with the season and the festival.
| Place | Address | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Hindu Temple of Arizona | 3033 N Hayden Road, Scottsdale 85251; (480) 874-3200 | Open daily 8:30am to 1pm and 5pm to 9pm; Venkateswara, Radha Krishna and Ram Parivar are the main deities; founded in 2000; its October–November 2026 calendar has Venkateswara Swami puja on Saturdays at 10am, a Sunday puja at 11am and Hanuman puja on Tuesdays at 7pm |
| Maha Ganapati Temple of Arizona | 51293 W Teel Road, Maricopa 85139; (520) 568-9881 | In Pinal County, south of the Valley; open weekends and US holidays 10am to 6pm and weekdays 10:30am to 12:30pm and 5:30pm to 7:30pm; presiding deities include Maha Ganapati, Balaji, Vishwanatha, Subramanya, Ayyappa and Mahalakshmi; consecrated in May 2008 |
| BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir | 3620 N Black Canyon Highway, Phoenix 85017; (480) 357-9922 | Darshan daily 8am to 12pm and 4pm to 7pm, pausing about half an hour at 11am and 6pm for the thaal; evening arti at 6:30pm; Saturday assemblies and Gujarati classes; the first Valley mandir opened in Mesa on 5 November 2000 and this one on 1 November 2014 |
| Bharatiya Ekta Mandir of Arizona (Ekta Mandir) | 2804 W Maryland Avenue, Phoenix 85017; (602) 246-3420 | Describes itself as a Hindu and Jain temple; linked to the Indo-American Cultural and Religious Foundation of Arizona; its site lists Navratri Utsav 2026, Dussehra on 20 October and a Diwali Mela on 6, 7 and 8 November |
| ISKCON Phoenix | 100 S Weber Drive, Chandler 85226; (480) 705-4900 | A congregation with Sunday programmes; its site says a larger new temple is planned |
| Jain Center of Greater Phoenix | S 23rd Avenue, south Phoenix; website jcgp.org | Dedicated in December 2008; Digambar and Śvetāmbara statues share one sanctum; the Shree Nathji temple, a Hindu temple, stands on four acres beside it |
| Chinmaya Mission Phoenix (Chinmaya Goloka) | 325 S Eldorado, Mesa 85202; (480) 759-1541 | Began in 2005; Bala Vihar classes, adult study groups and language classes; the Indian consulate held a consular camp in its hall on 1 and 2 February 2025 |
| Guru Nanak Dwara | 2302 N 9th Street, Phoenix 85006; 623-810-9849 | Established in 1970 as the first gurdwara in Arizona; Sunday programme from 10:30am with langar at about 1pm; Friday evening programme from 6:15pm with langar at 8:45pm |
| Nishkam Seva Gurdwara Sahib | North-east corner of 51st Avenue and the Loop 101, north-west Phoenix | Daily prakash at 5:30am and sukhasan at 7:30pm; kirtan Wednesday 6:30pm and Friday 6:30pm; Sunday Sukhmani Sahib 10am and kirtan 11:30am |
Hindu temples
The Hindu Temple of Arizona on Hayden Road was founded to hold several main deities with equal prominence, and the Maha Ganapati Temple at Maricopa, an eight-thousand-square-foot building with four towers on a site of 15 acres, has a South Indian pantheon of Balaji, Ayyappa and Subramanya among its deities and is a long drive from most of the community. The BAPS mandir serves the Swaminarayan community, with a youth programme. The Ekta Mandir on Maryland Avenue describes itself as a Hindu and Jain temple and has a community and reception hall that it lets out. ISKCON’s Chandler temple holds Krishna-centred programmes, and the Chinmaya Mission in Mesa runs classes and study groups.
Gurdwaras and the Jain Center
Guru Nanak Dwara, in central Phoenix, is the city’s oldest gurdwara and its langar is open to anyone who comes with a covered head; the Nishkam Seva Gurdwara on Loop 101 serves the north-west Valley. The Jain Center on South 23rd Avenue is a marble temple with a 61-foot shikhara; visitors should phone first, because its events follow the Jain calendar.
Muslim and Christian communities from South Asia worship at mosques and churches across the Valley, and the groups below will point to ones in your language.

13.Associations, community organisations and classes
Correct or addContents ↑Indian Phoenix is organised mostly by temple, language and city, and the associations are where the festivals, the language classes and the help happen. Many are volunteer-run and change committees every year, so the current contact is usually a phone number passed on by someone who went last year.
The umbrella and consular bodies
- India Association of Phoenix — the community organisation that has partnered the Indian consulate in the Valley: it organised the Consulate General’s first consular camp in Mesa on 1 and 2 February 2025 with the San Francisco consulate, and the consulate marked the International Day of Yoga in Phoenix with the association’s instructors in 2024. It is the first place to ask about camps for passports, OCI and visas, now that Arizona belongs to the Los Angeles consulate.
- Temples as community centres. The Ekta Mandir’s halls, the Hindu Temple of Arizona and the BAPS mandir host most of the festivals, language classes and youth programmes; the Hindu Temple of Arizona’s own history records free Hindi classes for children in its early years.
Language and regional associations
Associations by language and region meet in the Valley, and some are national in reach: the Association of Kannada Kootas of America was formed in February 1998 after a Kannada conference in Phoenix, and the American Telugu Association’s Arizona chapter held an ATA Day in Phoenix in March 2023. They are too many and too changeable to list reliably; the groups below are where current committees and programmes surface, and the events listings carry what they are holding.
Classes for children
Bala Vihar at Chinmaya Mission in Mesa, Gujarati classes and youth assemblies at the BAPS mandir on Saturdays, and the Sunday school at ISKCON in Chandler are the established ones; dance and music classes are found through other parents, so ask before you pay a term’s fees.
Students
Indian students are a large share of Arizona’s international students — India was 51% of the total in 2024–25, on Open Doors’ count, and Arizona State University alone hosted 20,368 of the state’s international students — and the groups below are the quickest way to find a flatmate or a lift before term.
Help in a hurry
The Consulate General’s emergency contacts are for Indian nationals; for local help dial 2-1-1, for an emergency 911, and for a crisis 988. The community organisations above can usually find a volunteer who speaks your language.
14.The festival year in Phoenix, 2026
Correct or addContents ↑Phoenix’s festivals are organised by the temples and, for the public Diwali evenings, by the Arizona Diwali organisers. The calendar below is only what the organisers’ own sites state for autumn 2026; the festivals earlier in the year and the weekly puja timetables are on the temples’ own pages.
| Festival | When (2026) | Where | Organiser |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navratri and Dussehra | Navratri Utsav 2026; Dussehra on Tuesday 20 October | Bharatiya Ekta Mandir, 2804 W Maryland Avenue, Phoenix | The temple |
| Phoenix Diwali | Saturday 24 October, 5pm to 9pm; free | Central High School, 4525 N Central Avenue, Phoenix 85012 | Arizona Diwali (azdiwali.org) |
| Tempe Diwali | Saturday 31 October, 11am to 1pm; free | Kyrene del Norte Academy, 1331 E Redfield Road, Tempe 85283 | Arizona Diwali (azdiwali.org) |
| Diwali Mela | Friday 6, Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November | Bharatiya Ekta Mandir, Phoenix | The temple |
| Diwali celebrations | Saturday 7 November (fireworks listed for 6pm to 8:30pm) | Maha Ganapati Temple of Arizona, Maricopa | The temple |
| Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa concert | Sunday 8 November | Maha Ganapati Temple of Arizona, Maricopa | The temple |
| Diwali | Sunday 8 November | Lakshmi puja in the temples and at home | Families and temples |
Diwali, explained
Diwali in the Valley is a fortnight, not a day. The public celebrations come first: Phoenix Diwali on Saturday 24 October is a free, family evening with henna tattoos, Indian meals and community festivities, and Tempe Diwali on Saturday 31 October is a free midday event at a school. The temples’ programmes cluster around the festival itself: the Ekta Mandir’s Diwali Mela over the weekend of 6 to 8 November, the Maha Ganapati Temple’s celebration on Saturday 7 November, and the Lakshmi puja at the temples on Sunday 8 November. Dhanteras falls on Friday 6 November. The Diwali in Phoenix page collects the 2026 events as they are confirmed.
The rest of the year
Navratri and Dussehra come in October; the temples’ own calendars carry Holi, Ram Navami, Janmashtami and the other dates; the Hindu Temple of Arizona holds weekly pujas on Saturday, Sunday and Tuesday; and the gurdwaras keep the Sikh calendar, from Vaisakhi to Guru Nanak Gurpurab, with kirtan and langar. The events posted near Phoenix on Namaste Community appear below; the full Phoenix events calendar carries the rest.

15.WhatsApp groups, and finding your people in Phoenix on Namaste Community
Correct or addContents ↑The Valley’s Indian community runs on WhatsApp. Most newcomers are added to groups by building, employer, temple, language, university class or cricket team, and to the “rooms in Tempe” and “Indians in Phoenix” groups where people ask for the links. The groups are how the community has always organised itself, and nothing on this page will change that.
What the groups are good at, and what they are not
They are fast and generous. Ask at ten at night which Chandler dentist speaks Gujarati, or which landlord on Ray Road still gives back deposits, and someone answers before eleven. But you need to know somebody to be added, the links in circulation are often dead, and a group of a thousand strangers is exactly where the “guaranteed job, pay the training fee first” and “room in Tempe, send the deposit today” scams begin. The same questions about the deposit rule, the open-enrolment deadline and the first summer’s electricity bill are asked every month and the answers scroll away. Every member sees your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: a flat in Mesa and a garba in Scottsdale arrive with the same weight as the one around the corner.
What Namaste Community adds
Namaste Community keeps the community’s groups, events and businesses for Phoenix in one place, alongside the same pages for other cities and countries.
- Groups for Phoenix. The site lists local groups for the Valley at /groups/in/usa/phoenix; local groups are moderated and tied to a place, and the app has groups, events near you and a directory in one place. Anonymous mode is there for the question you would rather not sign.
- Events. Diwali programmes, temple festivals, Navratri nights and cultural evenings are in the Phoenix events calendar, and the ones near you appear under the festival section above.
- A directory. Grocers, restaurants, temples and services are listed in the site’s Indian businesses in the US directory, with reviews from people who used them.
- Ask. A question about the deposit on a Chandler flat, an air-conditioning repair or a Telugu class in Gilbert can be asked once in the app’s Ask section, where the answer stays for the next person instead of scrolling away.
Your first week
- Open the Phoenix groups and join the general one and the one for your language, your neighbourhood or your interest. Read before you post — the answers to the paperwork questions are often already there.
- Go to one event in your first fortnight — a Saturday at the Hindu Temple of Arizona, a Diwali evening, a cricket net. It is the fastest way from “the Indian community in Phoenix” as a phrase to three people whose names you know.
- Ask the question you actually have, and say which city you are in: the rent, school and tax answers differ between Phoenix, Tempe, Chandler and Gilbert.
- When you have found your flat, your doctor and your grocer, leave a review or an answer for the next person arriving from Hyderabad, Ahmedabad or Kathmandu.
If the group you need does not exist yet — a parents’ group in Ahwatukee, a Kannada group in Chandler, a team short of a wicketkeeper — start it. It appears below for the next person searching.
16.Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepali and Sri Lankan neighbours
Correct or addContents ↑Indian Phoenix shares its shops, its restaurants and its streets with other South Asian communities. Everything on this page about rents, the deposit rule, Valley Metro, the heat, the schools and the scams applies identically to all of them; the differences are the consulate, the festival calendar and the aisle you head for.
The 2020–2024 American Community Survey counts the other South Asian groups in the Phoenix–Mesa–Chandler metro area as people who identify with them, alone or in any combination: 3,208 Pakistani (±781), 2,093 Bangladeshi (±715), 1,669 Nepalese (±537) and 677 Sri Lankan (±210), against 67,417 Asian Indians. The numbers are small beside the Indian count and the margins of error are wide, so they show scale, not exact size.
Pakistani and Bangladeshi
The survey counts about 3,200 Pakistanis and 2,100 Bangladeshis in the metro area, of whom the city of Phoenix has about 1,000 and 470 and Chandler about 560 and 540, each with wide margins. Pakistan’s Independence Day on 14 August and India’s on 15 August fall a day apart. Eid, the Bangladeshi New Year and the other dates of these communities are kept by their own mosques and associations; the groups below are where the dates appear.
Nepali
The survey counts about 1,700 Nepalese in the metro area, 727 of them in the city of Phoenix and 337 in Chandler. Maya’s Kitchen on Bell Road in Phoenix is run by a Nepali family, the Pokhrels, who put their Nepali heritage into a northern Indian menu. Dashain, Tihar, Chhath and the Nepali New Year are the community’s festivals, and the groups below are where their dates appear.
Sri Lankan
There is no reliable recent figure for Sri Lankans beyond the survey’s 677, of whom 296 are in the city of Phoenix and 106 in Chandler, with wide margins; Tamil New Year in April and Pongal in January are the dates Tamil families keep, and the groups below are where associations announce them.
Sikhs and Punjabis
The Sikh community worships at Guru Nanak Dwara in central Phoenix and at the Nishkam Seva Gurdwara on Loop 101, and Punjabi cooking is the speciality of The Dhaba on Apache Boulevard in Tempe. Langar, the free community meal, is open to everyone at both gurdwaras.
17.The Indian consulate, VFS, help lines and safety
Correct or addContents ↑Consular services
Arizona belongs to the Consulate General of India in Los Angeles, at 707 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 4500, Los Angeles CA 90017, according to the jurisdiction page of the Consulate General in San Francisco, which lists all nine posts. The revision that took effect on 1 August 2025 gives Los Angeles Southern California (ten counties), Arizona, Nevada and New Mexico. The same page adds a note: San Francisco “will provide ONLY passport services for the jurisdiction currently under CGI Los Angeles until further notice”. A news report of April 2026 says Los Angeles has begun processing visa, OCI, renunciation and passport files for Arizona through the VFS Global centre in Los Angeles, and that before then Arizona applicants had sent documents to San Francisco; the two sources do not agree on passports. Before you post a passport file, read VFS Global’s United States page for your state, which prints the right address on the shipping label, and check the consulate’s own site (indiainla.gov.in).
Neither consulate’s page lists a counter or a VFS application centre in Arizona, so a file is posted or taken to the centre VFS names. The consulate in San Francisco held its first consular camp for Phoenix at the Chinmaya Mission hall in Mesa on 1 and 2 February 2025 with the India Association of Phoenix, which drew more than 500 people for passports, OCI, renunciation and visas; ask the association whether the Los Angeles consulate plans another. The fees, documents, the e-OCI and the order of steps are national and are in the OCI card guide and the passport renewal guide. The Los Angeles guide and the San Francisco guide describe each consulate city; for gifts and customs on the trip home, see what to take to India.
Help lines
- 911 for police, fire and ambulance; 988 for the suicide and crisis line; 2-1-1 for local services, including cooling centres in summer.
- Maricopa County publishes heat-safety information at maricopa.gov/heat.
- The Consulate General, for Indian nationals only; see its own site for emergency numbers.
Your status, in 2025–26
The rules around status changed repeatedly in 2025 and 2026, and a mistake now costs more. The lottery, the $100,000 payment, the layoff question and the student rules are all set out in the jobs guide. The practical rules for Phoenix: keep copies of every I-797, I-20 and pay slip; never let a grace period or OPT unemployment days run out unnoticed; and treat any caller who says your visa will be cancelled unless you pay as a fraudster. The “digital arrest” and fake-officer scams are described in the remittance guide.
Safety, honestly
The main physical risk in the Valley is the heat, described above; the second is the road, because so much travel here is by car on wide, fast roads. The ordinary rules apply in the cities: leave nothing visible in a parked car, lock bicycles, and be careful late at night on empty streets. The scams that hurt newcomers most are housing and job frauds, not street crime — fake listings, deposits sent before a viewing, “training fees” for jobs, and calls from people pretending to be the consulate, the police or immigration. Report a hate incident to the police — 911 if anyone is in danger — and, if you want support afterwards, contact one of the community organisations above.
What to read next
The national rules on jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passports and remittances are in the guides linked above; Indians in the USA lists events, groups and businesses across the country, and the temples of the USA page lists the largest mandirs, gurdwaras and Jain centres in the country.
Questions people ask
- How many Indians live in Phoenix?
- About 67,000 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Phoenix–Mesa–Chandler metro area: 67,417 in the US Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey (margin of error ±3,446), which is 1.3% of the area’s residents. The city of Phoenix has 24,302, Chandler 12,855 (4.6% of its residents) and Tempe 8,015, and 42,230 residents of the metro area were born in India. The survey is a sample, so every figure is an estimate.
- Where do most Indians live in Phoenix?
- Chandler has the highest share (4.6%) and the Intel, Microchip and bank jobs; Tempe, around Arizona State University, has 4.3%. The biggest counts are in the city of Phoenix, including north Phoenix near Desert Ridge and the TSMC Arizona site and Ahwatukee, and then in Scottsdale, Gilbert and Peoria. There is no single Indian street; the shops and restaurants are in strip centres along Bell Road, Apache Boulevard, Arizona Avenue and Scottsdale Road.
- What is the best area to live in Phoenix for Indians?
- It depends on the stage of life. For a first rental near the jobs and a temple, Tempe or Chandler; for a family with children, Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale or Ahwatukee, each with a school district to check; for a short commute to TSMC, Amex or Desert Ridge, north Phoenix; and for a place near the light rail, central Phoenix or Tempe. Check the commute in summer traffic, the school district and which electricity company serves the address before you sign.
- How much is rent in Phoenix in 2026?
- Zumper’s September 2026 report has the median one-bedroom in Phoenix at $1,200 and the two-bedroom at $1,470, down 4.0% and 4.5% in a year. On Zumper’s city pages of 22 October 2026 Chandler is $1,399 and $1,800 and Tempe $1,250 and $1,560; Gilbert is $1,540 and $1,930 and Scottsdale $1,830 and $2,500. The Census Bureau’s median rent paid by all renters in the metro area was $1,702 in 2020–2024. Arizona caps the deposit at one and a half months’ rent and allows no rent control.
- Does Arizona have a state income tax?
- Yes, a flat 2.5% since tax year 2023, on all taxable income whatever the amount. A salary of $120,000 owes $3,000 before deductions, and less after the standard deduction. The state sales tax is 5.6% and cities add their own; the combined average is 8.52% on the Tax Foundation’s figure, and most groceries are not taxed. Part-year residents file a return for the part of the year they live in Arizona.
- How hot does Phoenix get, and how do people cope?
- In summer 2026 Phoenix had 39 days at or above 110°F and 89 at or above 100°F between 1 June and 31 August, with a high of 117°F on 24 July. Maricopa County counted 430 heat-related deaths in 2025 and 608 in 2024. People cope by working indoors in the afternoon, servicing the air conditioning before May, keeping water in the car, never leaving a child or pet in a parked car and using the county’s cooling centres and 2-1-1.
- How much are Valley Metro fares in 2026, and do I need a car?
- A local bus or light-rail ride is $2 with Smart Fare, capped at $4 a day, $20 a week and $64 a month; a Copper card costs $4, and a revised fare structure from January 2027 has been proposed. The light rail serves only Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa, so in Chandler, Gilbert, Scottsdale and the north and west Valley a car is close to essential. An Indian licence needs both the written and road tests in Arizona.
- Which companies are the main employers in the Phoenix area?
- Intel in Chandler (the city lists about 10,000 employees and its Fab 52 is producing 18A chips), TSMC Arizona in north Phoenix (more than 3,500 employees, July 2026), Microchip Technology in Chandler, Arizona State University, Honeywell Aerospace, American Express, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and PayPal, as well as hospitals such as Banner and Dignity. Indian IT-services firms are present on a smaller scale, including Infosys at SkySong in Scottsdale and Mastek in Chandler.
- How do Arizona schools and the ESA programme work?
- Public schools are run by districts such as Chandler Unified, Kyrene, Gilbert and Scottsdale Unified, and under A.R.S. 15-816 a student can apply to attend outside their boundary if there is capacity, usually without transport. Empowerment Scholarship Accounts have been open to every K–12 student since 2022 and had about 100,000 students in January 2026. The state’s A–F school letter grades are being revised after an Auditor General’s report found they do not clearly communicate performance.
- What are the main Hindu temples in Phoenix?
- The Hindu Temple of Arizona at 3033 N Hayden Road in Scottsdale; the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir at 3620 N Black Canyon Highway; the Bharatiya Ekta Mandir at 2804 W Maryland Avenue in Phoenix; the ISKCON temple at 100 S Weber Drive in Chandler; the Maha Ganapati Temple of Arizona at 51293 W Teel Road in Maricopa; and the Jain Center of Greater Phoenix on S 23rd Avenue, with a Shree Nathji temple beside it. Confirm times before going.
- Where is the gurdwara in Phoenix?
- Guru Nanak Dwara at 2302 N 9th Street in central Phoenix was established in 1970 as the first gurdwara in Arizona and serves langar after its Sunday programme and on Friday evenings. The Nishkam Seva Gurdwara Sahib at the north-east corner of 51st Avenue and the Loop 101 has a daily programme from 5:30 am, kirtan on Wednesday and Friday evenings and a Sunday programme from 10 am.
- Where can I buy Indian groceries in Phoenix?
- Patel Brothers has two Arizona stores: 2320 E Bell Road, Suite 120, in Phoenix, open daily 10am to 8pm, and 1315 S Arizona Avenue in Chandler, open daily 11am to 8pm. Independent Indian grocers operate alongside it; look them up in the directory and ask in the groups, because their addresses change.
- When is Diwali in Phoenix in 2026?
- Diwali itself is Sunday 8 November 2026. Phoenix Diwali, a free event listed on azdiwali.org, is on Saturday 24 October from 5pm to 9pm at Central High School, 4525 N Central Avenue, and Tempe Diwali on Saturday 31 October from 11am to 1pm at Kyrene del Norte Academy. The Ekta Mandir’s Diwali Mela is on 6, 7 and 8 November, and the Maha Ganapati Temple’s celebration is on Saturday 7 November.
- Which Indian consulate covers Arizona, and where do I apply for a passport or OCI?
- The Consulate General of India in Los Angeles, 707 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 4500, covers Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and ten Southern California counties since 1 August 2025. The San Francisco consulate’s page says it still provides only passport services for that jurisdiction until further notice, and an April 2026 report says Los Angeles now handles all services through VFS Global. Check VFS Global’s United States page for your state before you post a file.
