Indians in Detroit: the 2026 guide to Troy, Novi, Canton, Farmington Hills, Sterling Heights and Ann Arbor
About 105,600 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metro area: 105,635 in the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, about 2.4% of its residents and three in four of Michigan’s 138,644. Few live in Detroit itself (4,482, or 0.7% of its residents); the largest counts are in the northern and western suburbs — Troy (14,365), Canton Township (12,852), Novi (10,700) and Farmington Hills (8,055) — where Rochester Road in Troy and Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills are the shopping streets, Patel Brothers has stores in Troy, Farmington Hills, Garden City and Ann Arbor, and the main temples are the Bharatiya Temple in Troy, the Sri Venkateswara Temple and Cultural Center in Novi, the BAPS mandir in Canton and the Sikh Society of Michigan’s gurdwara in Sterling Heights. The practical fact for a newcomer is the car: the suburbs are far apart and the bus network thin, and Michigan’s no-fault law means a Michigan policy before you can register a car, at an average of $3,836 a year for full coverage in September 2026 (Experian). Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026, and the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Novi has a special Deepavali alankaram that day.
About 4.86 million people who identify as Asian Indian (alone or with another group) live in the US: 4,856,473 in the 2019–2023 American Community Survey. That is a national figure, not one for Detroit alone. Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2019–2023, table B02018
1.Detroit at a glance
Correct or addContents ↑Metro Detroit has one of the larger Indian communities in the United States, and it lives almost entirely in the suburbs. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey counts 105,635 people (margin of error ±3,477) who identify as Asian Indian, alone or in any combination with another group, in the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metro area. That is about 2.4% of the metro area’s 4,376,828 residents and 38% of its 274,498 Asian residents, and it is three in every four Asian Indians in Michigan (138,644). The Ann Arbor metro area, which is Washtenaw County alone, adds 10,169. The survey is a sample, so every figure is an estimate, and it counts how people describe themselves, not passports or visas: a student on an F-1, an engineer on an H-1B, a green-card holder and a Michigan-born child all fall into it. This guide uses the 2020–2024 release because it is the newest one the Census Bureau had published when the page was written.
“Detroit” on a job offer, a lease or a school form can mean the city, which holds very few Indian families, or a drive of 20 to 40 miles into Oakland, Wayne or Macomb County. The community’s centre of gravity sits between Troy, Novi and Canton, with Farmington Hills in the middle, and that is where this page spends most of its words.

The national rules — visas and the H-1B lottery, the Social Security number, federal tax, remittances, the OCI card and Indian passports — are in the site’s US topic guides and are linked rather than repeated: jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passport renewal, sending money to India and what to take to India. Indians in the USA is the country guide, and the Chicago guide covers the consulate that serves Michigan.
2.The community, and where it lives
Correct or addContents ↑Indian Detroit is old at the edges and young in the middle. Six men, among them Sarwan Singh Grewal, a Sikh from Sahuli in Punjab’s Ludhiana district, are remembered as the first Indians to settle in Detroit, in 1924; they came from California, where wages were low, and drove east. For decades the numbers stayed small. After the immigration law of 1965 the engineers, doctors and entrepreneurs came, and the car industry gave the engineers work. The 2000 census counted 39,527 people of Indian origin in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb Counties together, most of them in Oakland County, and the town counts that year were Troy 4,697, Canton Township 3,413, Farmington Hills 3,384, Detroit 2,991 and Novi 1,278. The 2020–2024 survey does not count in exactly the same way, but Novi’s 10,700 is roughly eight times its 2000 figure and Canton’s 12,852 almost four times.
The institutions followed the families. About thirty people met at the Northwood Inn in Royal Oak on 25 January 1975 to plan a Hindu temple, and the Bharatiya Temple in Troy was inaugurated on 19 July 1981 and the deities installed in November 1983; an $11 million, 35,000-square-foot addition was reported in June 2012. The Detroit Telugu Association bought the land for the Sri Venkateswara Temple in Novi in 2000, the temple was incorporated in 2007, ground was broken on Vijaya Dashami in September 2009, and the $10 million temple had its six-day grand opening in 2013 — the first in Michigan named for Venkateswara, built largely by Telugu speakers from Andhra Pradesh, according to the Detroit Free Press at the time. The Sikh Society of Michigan began in 1979 in a converted church and opened its Sterling Heights gurdwara on 1 September 2012. The Wikipedia history notes that the suppliers who run IT contracts for the carmakers hire Indian IT workers, and that demand in IT and medicine kept immigration rising into the 2010s; a 2013 Detroit Free Press report put the median income of Michigan’s Asian Indian households at $86,400, against $48,700 for the state, and found that 76% of Asian Indian adults held a bachelor’s degree or more.
The numbers
All counts below are the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, table B02018, people who identify as Asian Indian alone or in any combination, read through Census Reporter on 23 October 2026. The share is of all residents of the place.
| Area | Asian Indian residents | Share of residents |
|---|---|---|
| Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metro area | 105,635 (±3,477) | 2.4% |
| Ann Arbor metro area (Washtenaw County) | 10,169 (±949) | 2.7% |
| Michigan | 138,644 (±4,279) | 1.4% |
| Oakland County | 56,764 (±2,594) | 4.4% |
| Wayne County | 31,371 (±2,136) | 1.8% |
| Macomb County | 16,969 (±1,540) | 1.9% |
| Place (2020–2024) | Asian Indian residents | Share of residents |
|---|---|---|
| Troy | 14,365 (±1,291) | 16.3% |
| Canton Township | 12,852 (±1,403) | 13.0% |
| Novi | 10,700 (±1,475) | 16.0% |
| Farmington Hills | 8,055 (±958) | 9.6% |
| Warren | 7,190 (±1,303) | 5.2% |
| Ann Arbor (city) | 5,430 (±755) | 4.4% |
| Rochester Hills | 4,956 (±980) | 6.4% |
| Sterling Heights | 4,897 (±1,042) | 3.7% |
| Northville Township | 4,541 (±558) | 14.4% |
| Detroit (city) | 4,482 (±842) | 0.7% |
| Bloomfield Township | 2,614 (±691) | 5.9% |
| Auburn Hills | 2,316 (±568) | 9.2% |
| Pittsfield Township (Ann Arbor) | 2,300 (±460) | 5.8% |
| Farmington (city) | 2,091 (±350) | 18.2% |
| West Bloomfield Township | 1,829 (±429) | 2.8% |
| Livonia | 1,597 (±493) | 1.7% |
Oakland County alone holds 54% of the metro total. The margins of error are large for places this size, so the order of Troy, Canton and Novi, whose ranges overlap, is not reliable; Farmington, a small city next to Farmington Hills, has the highest share on the list. Garden City, where one of the Patel Brothers stores stands, has an estimated 11 Asian Indian residents (margin of error ±18): the store draws shoppers from the western suburbs, not from its own streets.
Where Indians actually live
- Troy and Rochester Hills (east Oakland County) — Troy’s 16.3% makes it one of the most Indian places in the metro area. The Bharatiya Temple is on North Adams Road, the Indian shops and restaurants line Rochester Road, and the employers include Magna International of America and Flagstar Bank, with the engineering offices of the suppliers and of Indian firms such as Tata Elxsi.
- Novi, Northville, Farmington Hills and Farmington (west Oakland and the Wayne County edge) — Novi is 16.0%, Northville Township 14.4%, the city of Farmington 18.2%. The Sri Venkateswara Temple is in Novi, Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills holds a Patel Brothers store and a string of restaurants, and the Jain temple is on Twelve Mile Road.
- Canton Township and the west (Wayne County) — 13.0% of Canton’s residents. Ford Road is the Indian shopping street, the BAPS mandir is on Canton Center Road, the Plymouth-Canton schools are the draw, and a new Patel Brothers is going up on North Canton Center Road. Westland (1,393 Asian Indian residents, 1.7%) is the next town to the east.
- Sterling Heights, Warren and Macomb County (north-east) — a smaller and more mixed community: the Sikh Society of Michigan’s gurdwara and a BAPS centre are in Sterling Heights, Dequindre Road is a South Asian commercial strip, and Warren has more Bangladeshi residents than Indian ones (see the neighbours section).
- Ann Arbor and Pittsfield Township (Washtenaw County) — the University of Michigan’s students, researchers and doctors, with a Patel Brothers on Washtenaw Avenue. It is a separate metro area, west of Canton.
- Detroit city — 0.7%. Students and hospital staff around Midtown, Wayne State University and the Henry Ford campus rent there, and the Wikipedia history says few of them stay for good; Hamtramck, inside the city, is the Bangladeshi centre.
The rule of thumb: Midtown, Royal Oak or Ann Arbor for a first year without children, Troy, Novi, Canton or Farmington Hills once there are children and a school district to choose, and a car in all of them.
3.Your first two weeks in Detroit
Correct or addContents ↑The national steps — the Social Security number, a bank account without a credit history, keeping your visa status — are in the jobs guide and the cost-of-living guide. This is the Metro Detroit order of things, in which the car comes earlier than it does in New York or Chicago.
- A furnished room or a short stay, not a lease. Landlords want income proof, a credit check and often a guarantor. An extended stay near the office in Troy, Novi or Farmington Hills, or a room in a shared house, buys the fortnight you need. Never transfer money for a room you have not stood in.
- The Social Security number. Apply once your status allows; the licence office, the lease and the second bank account all ask for it.
- A bank account and a US number. Take the passport, visa papers, offer letter and an address. Remittance apps and their fees are compared in sending money to India.
- Decide about the car on day one. Metro Detroit is built for driving, and the suburbs where the community lives are far apart. A car means a Michigan licence, a Michigan no-fault insurance policy (nothing else will let you register it) and a registration; the rules and costs are in getting around and the car-insurance section.
- A Michigan licence. Wayne State’s international office describes the route for students: a valid Social Security number or a letter of ineligibility, proof of Michigan residence, the passport, visa and I-94 and the I-20 (or the I-797 after a change of status), then a vision test, a written test, a road-sign test and a driving test; a student with a home-country licence and a certified English translation can skip the 30-day wait for the driving test, and the office says a student cannot drive in Michigan on the home-country licence. A worker should expect a similar list with the I-797; check the Secretary of State’s own list before you book.
- Health cover from the first day. An employer plan usually starts on day one or the first of the next month; ask which. If you have none, read the health section, because the Medicaid rules for non-citizens changed on 1 October 2026.
- Utilities and internet. Ask the landlord whether heat and water are in the rent, and what last winter’s heating cost. Book the internet installation the day you sign.
- A school district, if you have children. In Michigan the address decides the school, and district lines do not follow city lines. Check the district before you sign a lease, not after; see schools.
- Winter before it starts. A coat, boots, a scraper and a garage or covered space; see winter.
- The consulate, only when you need it. Passports, OCI cards and visas go through VFS Global’s Detroit centre; read the consulate section before you book or pay anything.
- A Sunday at a temple. Langar at the Sterling Heights gurdwara, an afternoon at the BAPS mandir in Canton or an evening aarti in Troy or Novi will produce the number of a pandit, a tax preparer and a dentist faster than any search, and the groups on Namaste Community (below) do the same without knowing anyone first.
4.Neighbourhoods and renting: 2026 rents by area and the Michigan deposit rules
Correct or addContents ↑Rent in Metro Detroit is moderate: the census median gross rent for the metro area, $1,207, is below Chicago’s $1,430 (both 2020–2024), and the city of Detroit, at $1,074, is well below its suburbs. Zumper’s city pages, updated on 22 October 2026, give average rents by bedroom count: $1,542 for a one-bedroom and $1,950 for a two-bedroom in Troy (up 6% and 3% on a year earlier), $1,417 and $1,850 in Novi (up 3% and 11%), $1,173 and $1,550 in Farmington Hills, $1,462 and $1,740 in Rochester Hills, $1,550 and $1,900 in Ann Arbor, and $925 and $1,150 in Detroit, where both were down on the year. Zumper’s Canton page does not break out the township. Its citywide medians for all rentals, houses included, are higher than the bedroom averages in Novi ($2,300) and Ann Arbor ($2,050), so read the bedroom rows, not the headline.
The Census Bureau measures something else: what every tenant actually pays, older leases and rented houses included. Its 2020–2024 median gross rent is $1,207 for the metro area, $1,376 in Oakland County, $1,132 in Wayne County, $1,211 in Macomb County and $1,463 in Washtenaw County. By place: Troy $1,602, Novi $1,747, Canton Township $1,501, Farmington Hills $1,551, Rochester Hills $1,644, Sterling Heights $1,292, Ann Arbor $1,649, Detroit $1,074 and West Bloomfield Township $2,031, the highest on the list.
| Area | Who lives there | What you pay and what to know (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Troy | Families and engineers; the Bharatiya Temple and Rochester Road shops | Zumper $1,542 / $1,950; census median $1,602. Zumper’s neighbourhood averages run from $1,775 (the Smart Zone) to $2,600 (Downtown Troy) |
| Novi, Northville | Families choosing Novi Community Schools; the Sri Venkateswara Temple | Zumper $1,417 / $1,850 in Novi; census median $1,747 |
| Farmington Hills, Farmington | Orchard Lake Road shops and restaurants, the Jain temple | Zumper $1,173 / $1,550 in Farmington Hills; census median $1,551 |
| Canton Township, Plymouth | Families; Ford Road shops, the BAPS mandir, Plymouth-Canton schools | Census median $1,501 in Canton |
| Rochester Hills, Auburn Hills | Eastern and central Oakland County; Stellantis’s North American headquarters is in Auburn Hills | Zumper $1,462 / $1,740 in Rochester Hills; census median $1,644 |
| Sterling Heights, Warren | Macomb County; the gurdwara, a BAPS centre and the South Asian strip on Dequindre Road | Census median $1,292 in Sterling Heights |
| West Bloomfield, Bloomfield | Oakland County townships with a smaller Indian share (2.8% and 5.9%) | Census median $2,031 in West Bloomfield |
| Ann Arbor | University of Michigan students, staff and doctors | Zumper $1,550 / $1,900; census median $1,649 |
| Midtown and Downtown Detroit | Students and hospital staff at Wayne State, Henry Ford and the Detroit Medical Center | Zumper $925 / $1,150 citywide; downtown averages $1,755 and the University area $1,397 |
How renting works here
- The deposit. Michigan law caps a deposit at one and a half times the monthly rent. The landlord must tell you in writing, within 14 days, which bank or credit union holds it. Fill in the move-in condition checklist and return a copy within seven days, or you are taken to agree the home was in good condition.
- Getting it back. Give the landlord your new address in writing within four days of moving out. The landlord then has 30 days to return the deposit or send an itemised list of damages; you have seven days to object in writing. If the landlord neither returns the deposit nor sues within 45 days, and you gave your address and answered any damages list on time, you can claim double. These steps are Michigan Legal Help’s summary of the law.
- In Detroit itself. A landlord needs a city certificate of compliance, issued after an inspection, to operate a rental. Michigan Public reported on 15 September 2026 that only about 14% of the city’s rentals have one (fewer than 12,000 of around 85,000), and that the Detroit Tenants Union is suing the 36th District Court to stop judges letting uncertified landlords collect rent or evict, which the court disputes. Ask to see the certificate before you pay a deposit.
- Income tests and guarantors. Most landlords want a multiple of the rent in monthly income, or a guarantor; the cost-of-living guide explains the workarounds for someone with no US credit history.
Scams to expect
A flat at half the going rate from an “owner abroad” who wants the deposit before a viewing; a “landlord” who asks for the deposit by gift card or wire; a basement unit advertised without a second exit; a WhatsApp “broker” who wants cash for a listing. Nobody legitimate asks you to pay to see a flat.
5.Getting around: SMART and DDOT buses, driving, the licence and the airport
Correct or addContents ↑Metro Detroit is a driving region. Two agencies run the buses — DDOT inside Detroit and SMART in the suburbs — and a regional DART pass covers both, but the stretches between Troy, Novi, Farmington Hills and Canton are served by few routes, and most households in the suburbs run at least one car. SMART’s fares below were read on the agency’s own page on 23 October 2026.
| Fare (October 2026) | Price |
|---|---|
| SMART fixed-route single ride, adults 19–64 | $2.00; youth 6–18 who are not students $0.50; older adults 65+ and people with disabilities $0.50 |
| Students | K-12, college and university students ride SMART fixed routes free with a valid ID from 4 May 2026; DDOT has let school students ride free since 6 April 2026 |
| DART pass (SMART and DDOT) | 4 hours $2, 24 hours $5, 7 days $22, 31 days $70 |
| SMART-only 31-day pass | $66 |
| SMART Connector (flexible service) | $4.00 full fare |
The airport and the train
Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) is reached from downtown by the Detroit Air Xpress (DAX) bus, which the city’s guide of May 2026 lists with trips through the day; from the suburbs most people drive or take a ride service. Amtrak’s Wolverine links Chicago, Detroit and Pontiac with three round trips a day, which is one way to reach the Chicago consulate or Devon Avenue; check Amtrak for the date, as track work changes the timetable.
Driving: licence and registration
The licence steps are in your first two weeks. Two Michigan rules catch newcomers. First, a nonresident owner who keeps a vehicle in Michigan for more than 90 days has to register it here, and to register it you must hold a Michigan no-fault policy: an out-of-state policy is not accepted, even if your insurer operates nationwide. Second, driving without the Michigan policy is a misdemeanour and can cost you your no-fault benefits after a crash; the next section explains what those are and what they cost. Registration fees depend on the vehicle’s value. Michigan Auto Law’s July 2026 guide lists the documents: the out-of-state title (or the current registration if a lender holds the title), the Michigan policy and photo identification.
Flying to India
Fare sites show itineraries from Detroit to Indian cities with one or two stops, mostly through Europe or the Gulf, and the pages checked listed no nonstop flight to India. Chicago O’Hare is the other airport people compare, though the Chicago guide notes that Air India listed Delhi–Chicago as temporarily suspended in May 2026; check the airline for your dates, and see what to take to India for baggage and customs.
6.Michigan’s no-fault car insurance: what it is and what it costs
Correct or addContents ↑Car insurance is the line in a Michigan budget that surprises newcomers most, and it is different in kind from the rest of the country. Under Michigan’s no-fault system your own insurer pays your medical bills and some lost income after a crash, whoever caused it. This cover is called personal injury protection, or PIP, and it is why a Michigan policy is not the same product as a Texas or Illinois one. Until 2 July 2020 every Michigan driver had to buy unlimited lifetime medical cover. Since then the driver chooses: Michigan’s own PIP page lists six levels, from unlimited down to $50,000 for people on Medicaid, with options tied to having other qualifying health cover that pays for car-accident injuries.
The choice matters because only the unlimited level is reinsured by the Michigan Catastrophic Claims Association (MCCA), which charges a fee on every vehicle. The MCCA’s annual report, issued on 1 September 2026, gives the fee announced for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027 as $84 a vehicle for unlimited PIP and $19 for any lower level; before the 2019 reform law the fee had reached $220. Insurers may pass it on to the policyholder. A newcomer with an employer plan should not choose a lower level or an exclusion on the agent’s say-so: ask whether your health plan counts as qualifying cover for car-accident injuries. Michigan’s insurance regulator has warned that drivers who chose an option that relies on other health cover can be left with large medical bills after a crash if that cover changes, and asks them to tell the insurer when it does.
What it costs is the other half. Experian’s analysis of policies sold through its marketplace in September 2026, published on 13 October, puts the Michigan average at $2,698 a year across all coverage levels, $3,836 a year ($320 a month) for full coverage and $2,298 for minimum coverage, and gives $4,390 a year for Detroit, well above the state figure. The US guide notes that a driver with no US record is quoted above the state average in the first year, and that the premium falls once you hold a US licence and a clean year. The figures are marketplace averages, not quotes: get quotes for the address where the car will actually be kept, not for a friend’s downtown address.
Three practical rules: buy the Michigan policy before you go to the Secretary of State; keep the declarations page in the car; and tell the insurer when your health cover changes. The cost-of-living guide covers what a car and its first-year insurance cost nationally.
7.Michigan winters: how cold, how much snow and what to buy
Correct or addContents ↑Detroit’s winters are long, grey and snowy, and the January mean is close to Chicago’s (25.2°F at O’Hare, in the Chicago guide). At Detroit Metropolitan Airport the January daily mean is 25.8°F (a high of 32.3°F and a low of 19.2°F), snow averages 45.0 inches a year on about 38 days, and December through March bring most of it (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). The record low is −21°F; July is warm, with a daily mean of 74.1°F, and precipitation falls evenly through the year, about 34 inches in all.
Buy a proper coat, hat, gloves and boots in October, before the first cold week. The cost-of-living guide budgets $800–1,500 for winter clothing for a family of four who have never owned any. In Michigan the car comes first: all-season or winter tyres, a scraper, a shovel, a blanket and jump leads in the boot from November, and a garage or covered space if the rent allows it.
Heating and the lease
Heating is the utility that swings most between July and January, and prices matter this year: the Bureau of Labor Statistics found energy prices in the Detroit area up 20.4% in the year to August 2026. Ask the landlord whether heat is in the rent, who pays for the furnace, and what last winter’s bill was; ask who clears the snow from the steps and the drive, because a lease for a house or townhouse can hand that job to the tenant.
Rules vary by town
Each city and township sets its own winter parking and sidewalk-clearing rules. Read the town’s page when you sign the lease and follow any parking or snow notices it issues. A visitor from India in December needs a coat as well, and parents travelling in January should check the forecast before the flight, because heavy snow can cancel flights.
8.Work and employers: the car industry, suppliers, engineering firms, hospitals and the universities
Correct or addContents ↑Metro Detroit’s economy is the car industry and everything that works for it, and the Indian community’s jobs follow that map: engineers and software staff at the manufacturers and their suppliers, doctors and nurses in the hospital systems, and academics at the universities. The Oakland County government’s list of the county’s 25 largest employers, drawn from Crain’s Detroit and updated in December 2023, is a useful map of who hires where: Corewell Health (14,580 local employees, the largest), Stellantis (11,524, headquartered in Auburn Hills), General Motors (7,451), UWM Holdings, Henry Ford Health (5,301), Ascension Michigan, Magna International of America in Troy (2,640), Comerica, Lear in Southfield (1,958), Continental Automotive Systems in Auburn Hills (1,875), Oakland University (1,762), Farmington Public Schools, Flagstar Bank in Troy (1,158) and BorgWarner in Auburn Hills (1,130). The city of Novi’s 2023 report lists Providence Park Hospital (2,230), Novi Community Schools (905), Harman (848), Ryder, Lineage Logistics, ITC Holdings, Yanfeng, Magna and Hanon.
The manufacturers in 2026
General Motors moved its global headquarters from the Renaissance Center to four floors of Hudson’s Detroit on Woodward Avenue this year, a lease of about 200,000 square feet. Ford’s headquarters is in Dearborn, and in fiscal 2025 the company had 789 H-1B approvals — 97 for new hires and 692 for continuing employment — most of them petitions listing Dearborn (federal petition data, read through the F1Jobs aggregator). The hiring picture has turned. eWeek reported on 18 May 2026 that the three Detroit manufacturers had cut more than 20,000 US salaried jobs from their peaks, with their combined white-collar headcount falling from about 102,000 in 2022 to about 88,700 at the end of 2025. Stellantis then hired heavily in the first half of 2026, bringing in at least 2,000 engineers, mostly at Auburn Hills, and was reported on 23 September 2026 by the Detroit Free Press to have paused white-collar onboarding there; the company said it was entering “the next phase of our talent strategy.” With that background, ask a recruiter who the team reports to and how the role is funded, not only the title.
Suppliers, engineering firms and the Indian companies
The suppliers — Magna, Lear, Continental, BorgWarner, Bosch, Harman, Yanfeng — hire the largest numbers of engineers outside the manufacturers. Indian engineering-services firms are in the same corridor. Tata Elxsi opened an automotive and smart-mobility engineering centre in Troy on 6 June 2023, its fifteenth year in the city, with a target of growing the centre from 50 to 200 people by 2025. KPIT Technologies, the Pune software firm for vehicles, files most of its US H-1B petitions from Novi (103 approvals in fiscal 2025, five of them for new hires). Tata Technologies announced in 2018 that it would move its North American headquarters from Novi to Detroit’s TechTown; its present footprint was not confirmed. The battery plants that were meant to add thousands of jobs — Ford’s BlueOval Battery Park in Marshall, the LG Energy Solution plants in Holland and the former GM–LG plant in Lansing — are an hour or more by road from the Indian suburbs, and automakers’ pullback from electric vehicles has reorganised or cut back several of them since 2025, according to Crain’s Detroit.
Health care and the universities
Corewell Health, Henry Ford Health, Trinity Health Michigan and Ascension Michigan are among the region’s largest employers, and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor had 244 H-1B approvals for new hires and 226 for continuing employment in fiscal 2025, against Ford’s 97 and 692; Henry Ford Health had 68 and 76. Universities and research non-profits are cap-exempt and can file in any month, so they are a route that does not depend on the lottery; the jobs guide sets out the rules for doctors and nurses.
What Michigan pays
Michigan’s minimum wage rose to $13.73 on 1 January 2026 and is due to reach $15.00 on 1 January 2027, with a tipped cash wage of $5.49 this year, according to Bridge Michigan. State tax and take-home pay are in the cost section.
The visa question
The H-1B is the main route and has changed twice this year: a wage-weighted lottery for the 2027 season, and a $100,000 payment on some new petitions that two federal courts have blocked while another upheld it, with appeals pending. All of that is national and set out in the jobs guide, with the legal routes and how to check an employer’s sponsorship record. The consultancy world has its own risks, explained in Indian employers and consultancies; “pay for a guaranteed job and a visa” is the oldest scam, described in the scams section of the jobs guide.
9.What Metro Detroit costs in 2026: Michigan tax, Detroit’s city tax, prices and rent
Correct or addContents ↑Metro Detroit’s rents are moderate, and the costs that come with a car and a cold winter are not. The cost-of-living guide prices six states and Michigan is not one of them, so use its method and its grocery basket with the local numbers below.
Income tax
Michigan taxes income at a flat rate. The Treasury announced on 15 April 2026 that the rate for the 2026 tax year stays at 4.25%: general fund revenue fell 1.56% in fiscal 2025 while inflation was 2.70%, so the formula that can cut the rate did not apply, according to the Treasurer’s statement as the Mining Journal reported it. That is below Illinois’s flat 4.95% and Georgia’s 4.99%, and above the nine states that levy no tax on wages. On top of federal tax and FICA, the take-home pay table shows how the sums work for a state with a flat rate.
The city of Detroit’s tax
Michigan lets cities levy their own income tax, and 24 do; in Metro Detroit that means Detroit, Hamtramck, Highland Park and Pontiac. The city of Detroit’s income-tax page gives 2.4% for resident individuals and 1.2% for non-resident individuals (and 2.00% for corporations) for 2013 and later years. The non-resident rate matters because some of the region’s largest employers are in the city: if you live in Troy or Canton and work at an office in Detroit, you pay 1.2% to Detroit on the pay earned there, and the city does not let an employee who is based in Detroit count days worked at home as days worked outside it. Troy, Novi, Canton, Farmington Hills, Sterling Heights, Warren and Ann Arbor are not on the list of 24 cities, so they levy no city income tax. Check with the payroll department if your employer is in Detroit.
Prices this year
The Bureau of Labor Statistics found prices in the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn area up 3.7% in the year to August 2026, unchanged since June, with energy up 20.4%, food up 7.3% and shelter up 3.2%, while everything other than food and energy rose 1.6%. Heating, fuel and groceries are therefore where a household budget is most likely to be wrong. Rents moved differently: Zumper’s one- and two-bedroom averages were lower than a year earlier in Detroit and higher in Troy, Novi and Farmington Hills (see renting).
What a month looks like
For a single newcomer in a one-bedroom in Troy or Farmington Hills: $1,200–1,550 in rent, the Michigan car-insurance premium (a car is close to essential, so budget the insurance in the section above), the premium your employer deducts, groceries and the heating bill. For a family in a two-bedroom: add childcare, which this guide could not price for Michigan, so ask three providers near your address before you decide where to live. The costs newcomers underestimate are insurance, winter clothing, heating and dental work, which is insured separately. Groceries are where the Indian saving is: a month of atta, dal, rice and spices from Patel Brothers or another Indian grocer costs much less in bulk than in small packets from a general supermarket, and the remittance guide explains the cheapest way to send money home.
10.Health: employer plans, HealthCare.gov, Medicaid changes and the hospital systems
Correct or addContents ↑American health care runs on insurance, and the first job in Michigan is to know what yours is. An employer plan is the normal route for H-1B, L-1 and most professional arrivals, with a premium taken from each pay cheque and a deductible before the plan pays; students are covered by their university’s plan. What a family plan costs in 2026, what an emergency-room visit bills and how to insure parents visiting on a tourist visa are covered in the cost-of-living guide. Choose an in-network primary-care doctor in the first month, ask your employer which hospital systems are in the network, and use an urgent-care centre for anything that is not an emergency.
The hospital systems
The large systems are Corewell Health (which absorbed the former Beaumont hospitals and is the largest employer in Oakland County), Henry Ford Health, Trinity Health Michigan, Ascension Michigan and the University of Michigan Health in Ann Arbor, with the Detroit Medical Center in Midtown. The right hospital is the one in your plan’s network; ask the plan before choosing a primary-care doctor.
If you are not covered
- HealthCare.gov serves Michigan. Open enrolment for 2027 runs from 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027 (enrol by 15 December for 1 January cover). The enhanced federal tax credits that held premiums down expired at the end of 2025, and the state’s regulator lists proposed 2027 increases of 11.1% to 25.5% depending on the insurer, which are not final. From 2027, premium tax credits go only to green-card holders and a few other groups; people on work and student visas can still buy a plan, at full price (see the health section of the US guide).
- Medicaid. From 1 October 2026 Michigan keeps full Medicaid for lawful permanent residents who have met or are exempt from the five-year bar, Cuban and Haitian entrants, Compact of Free Association migrants and most pregnant people and children under 21 who live here lawfully; most other non-citizens move to emergency-services-only coverage, and affected members are told by post, according to Fox 2 Detroit on 1 October 2026. From 1 January 2027 Healthy Michigan Plan members aged 16 to 64 face work requirements and six-month renewals. Ask about the effect of any benefit on a green card before you apply for it, not after.
- Free clinics and community health centres take uninsured patients, often on a sliding scale; dial 211 for the nearest.
Emergencies and mental health
Dial 911 for an emergency and 988 for the national suicide and crisis line. For a medical bill you cannot pay, ask the hospital for its financial-assistance application before you pay anything. Indian prescriptions are not honoured; get US prescriptions for anything long-term.
11.Schools: Troy, Novi, Plymouth-Canton and the other districts, and the school year
Correct or addContents ↑Public schools in Michigan are run by local districts, and the district — not the city — is the reason families pay what they do for a house in Troy, Novi or Canton. District boundaries do not follow city or township lines, so check the district of the exact address before you sign a lease. This page does not rank schools. The table gives each district’s size and the share of pupils the federal Common Core of Data records as Asian, which is every Asian group and not only Indian pupils, for the 2024–25 school year; it says who is there, not how well they are taught.
| District (2024–25) | Pupils | Asian pupils | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Novi Community School District | 6,770 | 3,319 | 49.0% |
| Troy School District | 12,283 | 4,848 | 39.5% |
| Northville Public Schools | 7,022 | 1,668 | 23.8% |
| Rochester Community Schools | 14,868 | 2,604 | 17.5% |
| Farmington Public Schools | 9,110 | 1,414 | 15.5% |
| Plymouth-Canton Community Schools | 16,083 | 2,439 | 15.2% |
| Ann Arbor Public Schools | 16,871 | 2,269 | 13.4% |
| Walled Lake Consolidated Schools | 11,818 | 889 | 7.5% |
| Utica Community Schools (Sterling Heights) | 25,297 | 1,587 | 6.3% |
| West Bloomfield School District | 4,727 | 267 | 5.6% |
Results
Michigan’s state tests are the M-STEP. The 2026 results, released on 4 September 2026, showed 38.2% of third graders proficient in English language arts, down from 38.9% and the lowest in the test’s 12-year history; across grades 3 to 8, 44% were proficient in reading and 35.5% in maths. Each district’s own results are in MI School Data and in Bridge Michigan’s look-up tool, and they are worth reading by school and grade, not by district headline.
Admissions, the calendar and the age rule
Michigan children enrol at the school their address is assigned to, and districts also take out-of-district pupils under the state’s schools-of-choice rules, with their own windows; read the district’s enrolment page. A child must be five by 1 September to start kindergarten, and a child who turns five between 2 September and 1 December can start with written notice to the district; notice dates vary. The Troy School District’s first day for the 2026–27 year was Tuesday 25 August 2026 (a half day), with International Academy East a week earlier on 18 August. Diwali falls on a Sunday this year, 8 November, so no school day is lost to it; in other years check the district calendar.
Childcare, universities and weekend schools
This guide could not price childcare for Michigan from a source it could open, so ask three providers near the address you are considering. For students, Michigan hosted 40,177 international students in 2024–25, 39.6% of them from India, the largest group; the University of Michigan–Ann Arbor had 11,929 international students in all, Trine University’s Detroit regional campus 7,433 and Wayne State University 1,718 (Open Doors 2025). The rules for F-1 status are in the jobs guide. The Bharatiya Temple’s Hindi class takes children from age six on Sunday, Saturday and Thursday sessions, and its Sanskrit class takes children from seven; ask in the groups below which other classes are running now.
12.Indian groceries, sweets and restaurants by area
Correct or addContents ↑Indian shopping in Metro Detroit is spread along four roads: Rochester Road in Troy, Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills, Ford Road across Canton and Garden City, and Dequindre Road in Sterling Heights. The community’s own writers have said there is no single “Little India”; people shop where they live. The stores and the first five restaurants named below were checked against their own sites or the chain’s store list on 23 October 2026; the rest are from the site’s directory and Visit Detroit’s list, as the last bullet explains.
Patel Brothers
Patel Brothers’ store list names four Michigan stores: 5055 Rochester Road, Troy 48085; 28950 Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills 48334; 28684 Ford Road, Garden City 48135; and 3426 Washtenaw Avenue, Ann Arbor 48104. A fifth is being built at 6310 N. Canton Center Road on the site of the former Canton Computers; What Now Detroit reported on 15 September 2026 that the company had no firm opening date. The Troy and Farmington Hills stores are closed on Tuesdays, according to the list.
Restaurants
- NeeHee’s serves Indian vegetarian street food, with a vegan section, at 45656 Ford Road, Canton and 4924 Rochester Road, Troy. Both are closed on Sundays.
- Royal Indian Cuisine, 3877 Rochester Road, Troy, runs a lunch buffet every Friday, Saturday and Sunday and serves lunch daily from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- Saffron, 29200 Orchard Lake Road, Farmington Hills, says it serves 100% halal meat, with a buffet Tuesday to Friday, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., and Saturday and Sunday, noon to 3 p.m.; it has a second branch in Dearborn.
- Kurrys, 24361 Halsted Road, Farmington Hills, serves dosas, dum biryani and an Indo-Chinese menu, with a banquet room at 24355 Halsted Road.
- Masala Junction, 34869 Mound Road, Sterling Heights, has tandoor dishes, biryani, an Indo-Chinese section and a catering menu.
- The site’s directory lists New Delhi (37206 Dequindre Road, Sterling Heights), which Visit Detroit recommends for its lunch buffet, Pithaghor Sweets & Grocery (2003 E. Fourteen Mile Road, Sterling Heights) and Andhra Cafe (110 W. Maple Road, Troy), each re-checked in 2026; Visit Detroit’s undated list also names Midnight Temple in Eastern Market, Star of India in Ferndale, Bonoful in Hamtramck, Charminar Biryani House (downtown, Midtown and Troy) and Pakwaan in Plymouth, which this guide did not confirm one by one.
Halal, sweets and the rest
Halal meat and groceries are easiest to find in Hamtramck, Dearborn and Sterling Heights (see the neighbours section). The businesses named here are the ones on Namaste Community’s directory or the chain’s own list — browse the Indian businesses in the US, add the shop that is missing, and review the one that saved your Diwali. The directory had only a handful of listings for Troy and Farmington Hills on 23 October 2026, so a missing grocer here usually means a missing listing.

13.Temples, gurdwaras, the Jain temple and ISKCON
Correct or addContents ↑Metro Detroit’s large Hindu, Sikh and Jain institutions are in the suburbs, on campuses with their own parking, and most are reached by car. Confirm times with each before going, because hours change for festivals. The US temples page lists other metro areas and does not yet include Detroit, so the places below are named here.
| Place | Address | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Bharatiya Temple of Metropolitan Detroit | 6850 N. Adams Road, Troy MI 48098; (248) 879-2552 | Founded in 1975 and inaugurated on 19 July 1981 on 18 acres; Lakshmi Narayana, Ganesh and Hanuman were installed in 1983; the main hall seats about 600; about 600 member families; Hindi and Sanskrit classes; Navratri Raas Garba on 11–20 October 2026 |

Hindu Metro Detroit
The Bharatiya Temple is the older of the two big suburban temples, planned in 1975 and open since 1981, with a 35,000-square-foot addition reported in 2012; it hosts the garba, the pujas and the language classes. The Venkateswara temple in Novi is the Telugu community’s, built from 2009 on land that the Detroit Telugu Association had bought in 2000, and its calendar lists weekday pujas, a Tuesday Vishnu Sahasranama recitation, abhishekams, the Srinivasa Kalyanam and Sunday programmes. The BAPS mandir in Canton and the Sterling Heights centre serve the Swaminarayan community, and the Flint temple is dedicated to Shiva as Viswanatha. Wikipedia dates the opening of ISKCON’s Hare Krishna temple in Detroit to 1983.
Sikh and Jain Detroit
The Sikh Society of Michigan’s gurdwara is the region’s main one; as at every gurdwara, visitors cover their heads and remove their shoes. Gurdwaras keep Bandi Chhor Divas on the night of Diwali, and the society’s site did not list a 2026 programme when read. The Jain Society of Greater Detroit’s temple in Farmington Hills held a Hindi Mahavir Nirvan puja on the morning of Diwali in 2022, according to its newsletter, with stavans and aarti in the evening; the 2026 programme was not posted when this was written.
Mosques and churches
Wikipedia counts ten mosques within a three-mile radius of Hamtramck in 2005. For a church or mosque that worships in your language, ask in the groups below which is nearest. Namaste Community’s directory lists the Bharatiya Hindu Temple, a Durga temple and the Sterling Heights gurdwara, with reviews.

14.Associations, community organisations, culture and classes
Correct or addContents ↑Indian Detroit is organised by language, region and religion as well as by suburb, and the associations are where the festivals, the language classes and the help happen. Many are volunteer-run, meet in temple halls, banquet rooms and school auditoriums, and change committees every year, so the current contact is usually a number passed on by someone who went last year.
Community organisations
- India League of America – Michigan (ILA Michigan), founded in 1978, organises the community’s India Day. Its India Day 2026 was on Saturday 15 August, from 10 a.m., with a grand parade at the Vibe Credit Union Showplace, 46100 Grand River Avenue, Novi. It also runs India Fest for Republic Day (held on 26 January 2025 at the Farmington Hills Manor) and, with the support of the Consulate General in Chicago, the Kala Utsav of classical and folk dance and music at the Bharatiya Temple, which the consulate reported on 20 September 2025 as attended by more than 200 guests.
- Detroit Telugu Association — the Telugu community’s association, which bought the Novi land for the temple in 2000 and handed it to the temple society in 2007.
- miindia.com — the community portal started in 1999 by Anand Kumar, and the Little India of Michigan newsletter that local Indian businesses hand out, are where many events and businesses first appear; Wikipedia reports that the portal logged over a million hits a month in 2017.
- The Resham Singh Foundation — organiser of the Detroit Diwali Mela at the American Polish Cultural Center on East Maple Road in Troy, held since 2019 with a bazaar, classical dance and a Navratri programme; its most recent edition found was 2023.
- The Consulate General of India, Chicago — supports community events in Michigan; the consulate’s 2026 consular camps were in St. Louis, Edina and Indianapolis, none in Michigan.
Regional and language groups
Most regions of India have an association somewhere in the metro area — Gujarati, Telugu, Tamil, Malayali, Bengali, Marathi, Kannada and Punjabi groups among them — and they hold the Onam, Durga Puja, Ugadi, Pongal and Vaisakhi programmes. They are too many and change too often to list reliably, and this guide could not confirm the current names of most of them; the groups on Namaste Community are where the current ones surface, and the events listings carry their programmes.
Classes, culture and the arts
The temples run most of the weekend teaching. The Bharatiya Temple’s Hindi class meets in Room 14A on Sundays at 10, 11 and noon, Saturdays at 11 and noon and Thursdays at 6 and 7 p.m., and its Sanskrit class is open to all ethnicities at beginner and advanced levels; the Venkateswara temple lists a Knowledge Academy as coming soon. BAPS runs Sunday assemblies for children and youth. The Festival of India, first held at Philip A. Hart Plaza in the 1970s and restarted in 2005 by United South Asian Promotions after a lapse, has been the city’s own Indian cultural event; check whether it is running in the year you arrive. Dance schools and cricket academies run in the Indian suburbs; ask other parents before you pay a term’s fees.
15.The festival year in Detroit, 2026
Correct or addContents ↑Metro Detroit’s festival calendar runs through the temples and rented halls: garba on temple grounds in October, India Day in August, and Diwali as a run of temple programmes. Only dates the organisers publish are given here.
| Festival | When (2026) | Where | Organiser |
|---|---|---|---|
| India Day | Saturday 15 August, from 10 a.m. | Vibe Credit Union Showplace, Novi | India League of America – Michigan |
| Navratri and garba | Sunday 11 to Tuesday 20 October; Dussehra on 20 October | Bharatiya Temple, Troy (Navratri Raas Garba, nightly); Sri Venkateswara Temple, Novi (Navarathri celebrations, Dandiya Night on Sunday 18 October) | The temples |
| Diwali | Sunday 8 November 2026 | Special Deepavali alankaram at the Sri Venkateswara Temple, Novi; programmes elsewhere not yet posted | The temples and gurdwaras |
| Gurpurab (Guru Nanak’s birthday) | Tuesday 24 November, the date the Chicago consulate lists | Gurdwaras, among them Sterling Heights; no programme posted | Sikh Society of Michigan and others |
| Diwali in the D | 20–25 October in 2025, when the city first hosted it; no 2026 dates found | Detroit | The city and community partners |
| Canton Festival of Lights | A free evening in October; the 2022 edition was the township’s second; no 2026 date found | Canton Township | The township’s recreation department with community groups |
Diwali, explained
Diwali 2026 is on Sunday 8 November, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Choti Diwali on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja and Annakut on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Lakshmi puja is performed after sunset, and each temple sets its own times. The Sri Venkateswara Temple and Cultural Center lists a Deepavali special alankaram on Sunday 8 November: the goddess Lakshmi adorned with 108 sarees that devotees bring or buy from the gift shop, with a suggested donation of $25, and the saree can be taken back afterwards; details are on 248-449-9049. The Bharatiya Temple’s homepage showed only its Navratri programme, BAPS’s Detroit news listing carried a Diwali and Annakut celebration for October 2025 but nothing for 2026, and the Sterling Heights gurdwara’s site gave no Bandi Chhor Divas programme, so ring each before you go. The Diwali page for Detroit collects the 2026 events as organisers confirm them, and the Chicago consulate’s holiday list for 2026 includes Diwali (a Sunday) and Guru Nanak’s Birthday.
The other rhythms
Summer belongs to India Day in Novi, autumn begins with Navratri at the temples and ends with Diwali, and winter moves indoors to the temples and halls, where ILA Michigan’s India Fest marked Republic Day in 2025. The events posted near Detroit appear below, and the full Detroit events calendar carries the rest.
16.WhatsApp groups, and finding your people in Detroit on Namaste Community
Correct or addContents ↑Metro Detroit’s Indian community runs on WhatsApp. There are groups for a suburb, an employer’s new joiners, a temple’s volunteers, a language or region, a university’s incoming class, a cricket team and a “rooms in Troy” market. The groups are how the community has always organised itself, and nothing on this page will change that.
What the groups are good at, and what they are not
They are fast and generous. Ask at ten at night which Novi dentist speaks Telugu, or whether a Farmington Hills shop is open on Diwali morning, and someone answers before eleven. But you need to know somebody to be added, the links in circulation are often dead, and a group of a thousand strangers is exactly where the “guaranteed job, pay the training fee first” and “room in Canton, send the deposit today” scams begin. Every member sees your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: a room in Warren and a garba in Novi arrive with the same weight as the one around the corner.
What Namaste Community adds
Namaste Community keeps the community’s groups, events and businesses for Detroit in one place, alongside the same pages for other cities and countries.
- Groups for Detroit. The site lists local groups for the area at /groups/in/usa/detroit. They are moderated and limited to people who live within a set distance of the group’s town, and your phone number is never shown to other members. When this page was written, on 23 October 2026, no local group for Detroit had been started yet; everyone in the United States is in the country group, so the first group for your suburb, language or interest is yours to start.
- Events. Garba nights, Diwali programmes and meetups are in the Detroit events calendar, which covers everything within 20 km of a point between Troy, Novi and Canton.
- A directory. Grocers, restaurants, temples and services are listed in the US directory, with reviews from people who used them.
- Ask. A question about rent in Novi, a tax preparer in Troy or a Telugu class in Canton can be asked once in the app’s Ask section, where the answer stays for the next person instead of scrolling away, and you can ask without giving your name.
Your first week
- Open the Detroit groups and join the ones for your suburb, your language or your interest — or start the first. Read before you post.
- Go to one event in your first fortnight — an evening aarti in Troy, a Sunday programme in Novi, langar in Sterling Heights, a garba night, a cricket net. It is the fastest way from “the Indian community in Detroit” as a phrase to three people whose names you know.
- Ask the question you actually have, and say which suburb you are in: the rent, school and insurance answers differ between Troy, Canton, Sterling Heights and Ann Arbor.
- When you have found your flat, your doctor and your grocer, leave a review or an answer for the next person arriving from Hyderabad, Ahmedabad or Kathmandu.
17.Bangladeshi, Pakistani, Nepali and Sri Lankan neighbours in Metro Detroit
Correct or addContents ↑Metro Detroit has large Bangladeshi and Pakistani communities beside the Indian one: 16,701 and 12,572 people in the metro area, against 105,635 Indians. Everything on this page about renting, no-fault insurance, schools, health cover and scams applies identically to all of them; the differences are the consulate, the festival calendar and the aisle you head for. The festival calendars differ — Eid and the national days for Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, Dashain and Tihar for Nepalis — and the shopkeepers in Hamtramck and Sterling Heights serve them all.
| Group (alone or in combination, 2020–2024) | Detroit metro area | Michigan |
|---|---|---|
| Bangladeshi | 16,701 (±1,767) | 18,615 (±1,894) |
| Pakistani | 12,572 (±1,373) | 16,330 (±1,483) |
| Nepalese | 910 (±480) | 3,173 (±892) |
| Sri Lankan | 774 (±284) | 1,483 (±458) |
Bangladeshi
Metro Detroit has more Bangladeshi residents than Pakistani ones. Hamtramck, a city of 27,743 almost surrounded by Detroit, has 4,779 (±871) Bangladeshi residents; Warren has 4,282 (±828), the city of Detroit 3,454 (±758) and Sterling Heights 1,636 (±728). Bengalis first settled in Detroit and Hamtramck in the 1930s and a large population arrived in the late 1980s and 1990s. In 2008 the Bengali business district on Conant Avenue, between Davison and Harold Street, was given the honorary name Bangladesh Avenue; its grocers, sweet shops and restaurants share the streets with Hamtramck’s Yemeni community and its older Polish heritage. Hamtramck’s council voted in 2004 to let mosques broadcast the call to prayer.
Pakistani
The metro area has 12,572 Pakistani residents, with Oakland County (5,310) and Wayne County (5,579) the largest counts. The halal restaurants and groceries of Dearborn, Sterling Heights and Farmington Hills serve both communities; Saffron in Farmington Hills, for one, says it serves only halal meat. Pakistan’s Independence Day on 14 August and India’s on 15 August fall a day apart.
Nepali and Sri Lankan
The Nepali and Sri Lankan communities are small: 910 and 774 in the metro area. Their festival dates — Dashain and Tihar, the Tamil New Year in April and Pongal in January — surface in the groups below. A Nepali or Sri Lankan newcomer does their consular business with their own country’s embassy or consulate, not the Indian one.

Michigan is in the area of the Consulate General of India in Chicago, at 455 N. Cityfront Plaza Drive, Suite 850 (NBC Tower), Chicago IL 60611, which covers Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri and Wisconsin. Its office hours are 9:00 to 17:30 on weekdays, with a lunch break from 13:30 to 14:00; its contact page gives 312-595-0405 and 312-595-0406 for calls between 14:00 and 17:00 on working days. Since 1 August 2025 consular services have been offered through VFS Global: in Michigan at its Detroit centre, Suite 110, 28 W. Adams Street, Detroit MI 48226, which the consulate’s homepage (updated 20 October 2026) lists beside the Chicago centre. A consulate notice of 2025 gave 333 W. Fort Street for Detroit, so confirm the address on VFS’s own page before travelling. The list of services that go through VFS includes passports, visas, OCI cards, surrender certificates, police clearance certificates, attestations and registration of births and marriages; the consulate says the centres are open six days a week and the fee includes the photograph, photocopies, form-filling help and return courier. For miscellaneous services VFS charges US$19 and the Indian Community Welfare Fund US$2 on top of the government fee, and VFS’s helpline is +1 800 320 9625. The fees, documents and steps are national and are in the OCI card guide and the passport renewal guide.
The consulate was closed on Tuesday 20 October 2026 for Dussehra; its 2026 holiday list shows Diwali on Sunday 8 November and Guru Nanak’s Birthday on Tuesday 24 November. Its 2026 consular camps were in St. Louis, Edina and Indianapolis, none in Michigan.
Beware of calls from “the consulate”
The consulate warns that fraudsters are spoofing its own numbers, 312-595-0405 and 312-595-0406, to ask for personal information or money and to threaten deportation over “errors” in passports or visa forms. It says no official calls to ask for personal information, that requests for documents come only from addresses at mea.gov.in, and that suspicious calls can be reported to hoc.chicago@mea.gov.in with the subject “INFORMATION ON SPOOFED CALLS”. The “digital arrest” and fake-officer scams are described in the remittance guide.
Help lines
- 911 for police, fire and ambulance; 988 for the suicide and crisis line; 211 for local services and charities.
- Consulate emergencies: +1-312-753-8530, 24 hours, for Indian nationals seeking immediate emergency assistance only.
- Michigan Immigrant Rights Center: (734) 239-6863 on weekdays, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and WhatsApp on (734) 472-2247, for immigration legal help and for families of people detained.
- Michigan Legal Help (michiganlegalhelp.org) for tenant and consumer questions.
Your status, in 2025–26
The rules around status changed repeatedly in 2025 and 2026, and a mistake now costs more: the weighted H-1B lottery, the $100,000 payment on some new petitions, and the end of open-ended student status for F and J visa holders who enter on or after 15 September 2026 are all set out in the jobs guide. The practical rules: keep copies of every I-797, I-20 and pay slip, never let a grace period run out unnoticed, use a free immigration legal service before you pay a consultant, and treat any caller who says your visa will be cancelled unless you pay as a fraudster.
Safety, honestly
Detroit’s preliminary figures for 2025 counted 165 criminal homicides, down 19% on 2024 and the fewest in the career of the police chief, who has served for more than 30 years, with nonfatal shootings down 26% and carjackings down 46%, according to Michigan Public of 7 January 2026; Metro Detroit’s other cities report their own figures. Most Indian families live in the suburbs, and the practical rules are the ordinary ones: keep valuables out of sight in a parked car, lock it and take the key with you, and be careful late at night in unfamiliar streets. In October 2026 a man was charged in Illinois over an alleged plot against a Hindu temple near Aurora; the Chicago guide describes it, and no Michigan-specific incident from 2026 was found when this page was written. Expect more checks at the door of a temple or gurdwara around festivals, follow the staff’s instructions and report anything that worries you to the police on 911. The scams that hurt newcomers most are housing and job frauds, not street crime: fake listings, “training fees” for jobs, and calls from people pretending to be the consulate, the police or immigration.
The weather, and what to read next
Read the winter section before the first week of December. The national rules on jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passports and remittances are in the guides linked above, and Indians in the USA lists events, groups and businesses across the country.
Questions people ask
- How many Indians live in Detroit?
- About 105,600 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Detroit–Warren–Dearborn metro area: 105,635 (±3,477) in the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, about 2.4% of its 4.4 million residents. The Ann Arbor metro area, which is Washtenaw County, adds 10,169, and Michigan has 138,644. Only 4,482 live in the city of Detroit; the rest are in the suburbs.
- Where do most Indians live in the Detroit area?
- In the suburbs north and west of the city. The 2020–2024 survey counts 14,365 in Troy, 12,852 in Canton Township, 10,700 in Novi, 8,055 in Farmington Hills, 7,190 in Warren and 4,956 in Rochester Hills; Oakland County alone has 56,764 and Wayne County 31,371. Troy and Novi are about 16% Indian, Canton 13%. The city of Detroit has only 4,482 (0.7%), mostly students and hospital staff around Midtown, and Ann Arbor, a separate metro area, has 5,430 in the city.
- What is the best area to live in Detroit for Indians?
- It depends on the stage of life and the school district. Families usually choose Troy, Novi, Northville, Canton or Farmington Hills for the schools, the temples and the shops; a first year without children is often spent in Midtown, Royal Oak or Ann Arbor. Rents are lower than on the coasts, but you need a car in all of them, so check the commute, the district and the insurance quote for the address.
- How much is rent in Metro Detroit in 2026?
- Zumper’s averages of 22 October 2026 for a one-bedroom and a two-bedroom are $1,542 and $1,950 in Troy, $1,417 and $1,850 in Novi, $1,173 and $1,550 in Farmington Hills, $1,550 and $1,900 in Ann Arbor and $925 and $1,150 in Detroit. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 median gross rent, which counts all tenants, is $1,207 for the metro area and $1,602 in Troy.
- What is Michigan’s security-deposit law?
- A deposit is capped at one and a half times the monthly rent. You give the landlord your new address in writing within four days of moving out; the landlord then has 30 days to return the deposit or send an itemised list of damages, and you have seven days to object. A landlord who neither returns it nor sues within 45 days can owe double. In Detroit, check that the landlord holds a certificate of compliance.
- Why is car insurance so expensive in Michigan, and what is no-fault?
- Under no-fault, your own insurer pays your medical bills after a crash whoever caused it, so a Michigan policy covers more than liability. Since July 2020 you choose a PIP medical level; the MCCA fee is $84 a vehicle for unlimited PIP and $19 for lower levels for 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027. Experian’s September 2026 averages are $3,836 a year for full coverage in Michigan, and it gives $4,390 a year for Detroit. You need a Michigan policy to register a car.
- What is the Michigan income tax rate in 2026, and does Detroit have a city tax?
- Michigan taxes income at a flat 4.25% for the 2026 tax year, which the Treasury confirmed on 15 April 2026. The city of Detroit adds 2.4% for residents and 1.2% for non-residents who work in the city. Troy, Novi, Canton, Farmington Hills, Sterling Heights, Warren and Ann Arbor do not levy a city income tax.
- Do I need a car in Metro Detroit?
- In practice yes. SMART buses cost $2.00 a ride and a DART pass covering SMART and DDOT is $2 for four hours, $5 a day, $22 a week or $70 for 31 days, and students ride free, but the suburbs where the community lives are far apart and thinly served. A car needs a Michigan licence, a Michigan no-fault policy and a registration, and the insurance premium is one of the largest running costs.
- What are the main Hindu temples, gurdwaras and Jain temples near Detroit?
- The Bharatiya Temple of Metropolitan Detroit at 6850 N. Adams Road in Troy, inaugurated in 1981; the Sri Venkateswara Temple and Cultural Center at 26233 Taft Road in Novi, opened in 2013; the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir at 3175 S. Canton Center Road in Canton; and the Paschima Kasi Sri Viswanatha Temple at 1147 Elms Road in Flint. The Sikh Society of Michigan’s gurdwara is at 33340 Dequindre Road in Sterling Heights, open daily 9:00–19:30 with a Sunday diwan from 10:00 and langar after it; the Jain Society of Greater Detroit’s temple is on W. Twelve Mile Road in Farmington Hills, and ISKCON Detroit is at 383 Lenox Street in Detroit.
- Where can I buy Indian groceries near Detroit?
- Patel Brothers has stores at 5055 Rochester Road in Troy, 28950 Orchard Lake Road in Farmington Hills, 28684 Ford Road in Garden City and 3426 Washtenaw Avenue in Ann Arbor, and is building one at 6310 N. Canton Center Road in Canton with no opening date announced on 15 September 2026. The site’s directory also lists Pithaghor Sweets & Grocery at 2003 E. Fourteen Mile Road in Sterling Heights.
- When is Diwali in Detroit in 2026, and what events are there?
- Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. The Sri Venkateswara Temple and Cultural Center in Novi has a special Deepavali alankaram that day, with the goddess Lakshmi adorned with 108 sarees and a suggested donation of $25. The Bharatiya Temple, BAPS and the Sterling Heights gurdwara had not posted a 2026 Diwali programme when this was written, so ring them. Navratri ran 11 to 20 October.
- Where do I apply for an Indian passport or OCI card in Michigan?
- Michigan is in the area of the Consulate General of India in Chicago, and applications go through VFS Global’s Detroit centre at Suite 110, 28 W. Adams Street, Detroit, listed on the consulate’s site on 20 October 2026; a 2025 notice gave 333 W. Fort Street, so confirm the address before travelling. VFS charges US$19 plus the consulate’s US$2 welfare-fund contribution on top of the government fee for miscellaneous services.
- What are Detroit winters like?
- At Detroit Metropolitan Airport the January daily mean is 25.8°F and snow averages 45.0 inches a year on about 38 days, with a record low of −21°F (NOAA 1991–2020). Buy a coat, boots and a scraper in October, ask the landlord who pays for heat and clears the snow, and keep a shovel and blanket in the car from November. Prices for energy were up 20.4% in the year to August 2026.
- Which school districts have the most Indian students near Detroit?
- In the 2024–25 school year the federal data record Asian pupils as 49.0% of Novi Community Schools (6,770 pupils), 39.5% of Troy (12,283), 23.8% of Northville, 17.5% of Rochester, 15.5% of Farmington and 15.2% of Plymouth-Canton (16,083). Those counts cover all Asian pupils, not only Indian ones, and say nothing about quality. An address decides the school, so check the district before you sign a lease.
