Indians in Minneapolis: the 2026 guide to Plymouth, Maple Grove, Eden Prairie, Edina, Woodbury and Saint Paul
About 47,200 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Minneapolis–St. Paul–Bloomington metro area: 47,174 in the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, about 1.3% of its residents and nine in ten of Minnesota’s 52,192. The largest counts are in the city of Minneapolis (4,787), Plymouth (4,767), Eden Prairie (4,340) and Woodbury, Maple Grove and Eagan (about 2,300–2,600 each), and Eden Prairie and Plymouth have the highest Indian share (6.9% and 6.0%) of any Minnesota place above 25,000 residents. There is no single Indian shopping street: India Market and India Spice House are in Eden Prairie, the main temples are the Hindu Temple of Minnesota in Maple Grove and the Sri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple in Edina, with ISKCON Minnesota in Minneapolis, the Sikh Society of Minnesota’s gurdwara in Bloomington and a new BAPS mandir planned in Medina. The practical fact for a newcomer is winter: the January mean at the airport is 16.2°F and snow averages 51.2 inches a year, and Minneapolis and Saint Paul tow cars from streets during a snow emergency. Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026, when the Jain Center of Minnesota holds its Diwali Nirvan Pooja in Maple Grove.
About 4.86 million people who identify as Asian Indian (alone or with another group) live in the US: 4,856,473 in the 2019–2023 American Community Survey. That is a national figure, not one for Minneapolis alone. Source: US Census Bureau, American Community Survey 2019–2023, table B02018
1.Minneapolis at a glance
Correct or addContents ↑The Twin Cities hold a mid-sized Indian community that has grown quickly and lives mostly in the suburbs. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey counts 47,174 people (margin of error ±2,587) who identify as Asian Indian, alone or in any combination with another group, in the Minneapolis–St. Paul–Bloomington metro area, which reaches into Wisconsin. That is about 1.3% of the metro area’s 3,713,668 residents and nine in every ten of the 52,192 Asian Indians in Minnesota. In the same table the metro area has 101,405 Hmong residents, so Asian Indians are the second-largest Asian group, ahead of Chinese except Taiwanese (36,341) and Vietnamese (28,000). A separate table counts 28,214 residents (±1,778) born in India; the two numbers cover different people, because the first includes Minnesota-born children and the second does not. The survey is a sample, so every figure is an estimate, and it counts how people describe themselves, not passports or visas: a student on an F-1, an engineer on an H-1B, a green-card holder and a Minnesota-born child all fall into it. This guide uses the 2020–2024 release because it is the newest one the Census Bureau had published when the page was written.
“Minneapolis” on a job offer, a lease or a school form can mean the city itself, which holds 4,787 Indian residents (1.1% of its people), or any of the suburbs where most of the community lives. The centre of gravity is west and south-west of downtown — Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Minnetonka and Edina — with Woodbury and Eagan on the south-east side, and that is where this page spends most of its words. The Mayo Clinic’s home, Rochester, has 2,260 Indian residents but is a separate county outside the metro area.

The national rules — visas and the H-1B lottery, the Social Security number, federal tax, remittances, the OCI card and Indian passports — are in the site’s US topic guides and are linked rather than repeated: jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passport renewal, sending money to India and what to take to India. Indians in the USA is the country guide, and the Chicago guide covers the consulate that serves Minnesota.
2.The community, and where it lives
Correct or addContents ↑Indian Minnesota is young as a community and old as an institution. The census counted 3,734 Asian Indians in Minnesota in 1980, 8,234 in 1990, 16,278 in 2000, 33,031 in 2010 and 47,173 in 2020 (the figures in Wikipedia’s table of Indian Americans by state; the definitions are not identical from census to census, so read it as a trend, not a measurement). The 2020–2024 survey puts the state at 52,192. The India Association of Minnesota, which calls itself non-religious and non-political, was founded in 1973 and says it has served the community for 53 years. The Hindu community that became the Hindu Society of Minnesota bought a former Episcopal church built in 1897 in 1978; construction of the temple in Maple Grove, on 80 acres of farmland, began in 2003, use began in 2006 and the grand opening, with the consecration of a 65-foot gateway, was the last weekend of June 2009, according to MPR News. The Jain Center of Minnesota was formed in October 1989 and says it now has more than 100 families; the Minnesota Tamil Sangam says it has served the state since 2003; the Minnesota Hindi Association began in 2022.
Students feed the community. Minnesota hosted 15,560 international students in 2024/25, and India was the largest source at 21.1%, ahead of China (18.1%) and Nepal (6%); the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities alone had 6,231 international students (Open Doors 2025). Jobs keep many of them: the employers section shows who files H-1B petitions in the state. This guide did not find a count of the community by Indian state of origin. The associations show who is here — Tamil, Gujarati and Hindi-belt groups each have their own association, the Sikh Society teaches Punjabi, and the Hindu Society’s temple has 21 mini temples that its site calls replicas of famous temples from all regions of India — and the associations section lists them.
The numbers
All counts below are the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, table B02018, people who identify as Asian Indian alone or in any combination, read through Census Reporter on 23 October 2026. The share is of all residents of the place.
| Area | Asian Indian residents | Share of residents |
|---|---|---|
| Minneapolis–St. Paul–Bloomington metro area | 47,174 (±2,587) | 1.3% |
| Minnesota | 52,192 (±2,528) | 0.9% |
| Hennepin County | 25,709 (±1,790) | 2.0% |
| Dakota County | 6,360 (±687) | 1.4% |
| Ramsey County | 4,605 (±654) | 0.8% |
| Washington County | 3,295 (±995) | 1.2% |
| Anoka County | 2,457 (±567) | 0.7% |
| Scott County | 2,292 (±602) | 1.5% |
| Carver County | 1,669 (±348) | 1.5% |
| Place (2020–2024) | Asian Indian residents | Share of residents |
|---|---|---|
| Minneapolis | 4,787 (±831) | 1.1% |
| Plymouth | 4,767 (±1,316) | 6.0% |
| Eden Prairie | 4,340 (±806) | 6.9% |
| Woodbury | 2,623 (±936) | 3.3% |
| Maple Grove | 2,592 (±633) | 3.6% |
| Eagan | 2,338 (±498) | 3.4% |
| Rochester (outside the metro area) | 2,260 (±553) | 1.8% |
| Saint Paul | 2,076 (±451) | 0.7% |
| Shakopee | 1,669 (±582) | 3.6% |
| Minnetonka | 1,632 (±528) | 3.1% |
| Blaine | 1,606 (±501) | 2.2% |
| Lakeville | 1,402 (±438) | 1.9% |
| Edina | 1,291 (±463) | 2.4% |
| Apple Valley | 1,119 (±399) | 2.0% |
Hennepin County alone holds 54% of the metro total. The margins of error are large for places this size, so the order of Minneapolis, Plymouth and Eden Prairie, whose ranges overlap, is not reliable. What is reliable is the share: Eden Prairie (6.9%) and Plymouth (6.0%) have the highest Indian share of any Minnesota place with more than 25,000 residents, well ahead of Shoreview (3.8%), Maple Grove and Shakopee (3.6% each).
Where Indians actually live
- Plymouth, Wayzata and Minnetonka (west Hennepin) — Plymouth’s 6.0% is the second-highest share in the state’s larger towns, Minnetonka has 3.1%, and the Wayzata school district, whose offices are in Plymouth, is 21.7% Asian. No Indian grocer in Plymouth could be confirmed, and the nearest ones this guide did confirm are in Eden Prairie.
- Eden Prairie and Chanhassen (south-west) — Eden Prairie’s 4,340 residents are 6.9% of the town. India Market and India Spice House are here, and most of Optum’s H-1B petitions list an Eden Prairie address. Chanhassen has 829 Indian residents (3.2%).
- Maple Grove and Brooklyn Park (north-west) — Maple Grove has 2,592 Indian residents (3.6%) and the Hindu Temple of Minnesota. Brooklyn Park has 923 (1.1%) but holds Target’s campus, and BAPS’s congregation meets in the neighbouring suburb of Brooklyn Center.
- Edina and Bloomington (south of downtown) — Edina has 1,291 (2.4%) and the Sri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple; Bloomington has 650 (0.7%) and the Sikh Society of Minnesota’s gurdwara.
- Woodbury, Eagan and Apple Valley (east and south) — Woodbury (2,623) and Eagan (2,338) are each about 3.4%; Woodbury hosted the Hindu Society’s Diwali Mela in 2025 and has an Indian grocery and eatery, Apple Valley opened one in 2025, and the district for an east or south address is worth checking before you sign (see schools).
- Minneapolis and Saint Paul — students around the University of Minnesota and young professionals near the downtown employers rent here. Minneapolis has 4,787 Indian residents but only 1.1% of its population; Saint Paul has 2,076 (0.7%), and ISKCON Minnesota and Raag are in Minneapolis.
The rule of thumb: Minneapolis or Saint Paul for a first year without children, Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Edina or Woodbury once there are children and a school district to choose, and a car in all of the suburbs.
3.Your first two weeks in Minneapolis
Correct or addContents ↑The national steps — the Social Security number, a bank account without a credit history, keeping your visa status — are in the jobs guide and the cost-of-living guide. This is the Twin Cities order of things, in which winter sets the calendar.
- A furnished room or a short stay, not a lease. Landlords want income proof, a credit check and often a guarantor. An extended stay near the office in Eden Prairie, Plymouth or Minneapolis, or a room in a shared house, buys the fortnight you need. Never transfer money for a room you have not stood in.
- The Social Security number. Apply once your status allows; the lease, the second bank account and many employers ask for it.
- A bank account and a US number. Take the passport, visa papers, offer letter and an address. Remittance apps and their fees are compared in sending money to India.
- Decide about the car on day one. Minnesota law lets a new resident drive on a valid licence from another jurisdiction for no more than 60 days after becoming a resident, so book the Minnesota licence early; ask the Driver and Vehicle Services office how your Indian licence is treated, because the statute does not name it. A car also needs Minnesota no-fault insurance; see getting around.
- Health cover from the first day. An employer plan usually starts on day one or the first of the next month; ask which. If you have none, read the health section: MNsure’s open enrolment for 2027 opens on 1 November.
- Winter before it starts. A coat, boots, a scraper and a garage or covered space; read winter before the first snow emergency, which can come in November.
- A school district, if you have children. The address decides the district, and Minnesota’s open enrolment application for the following year is due on 15 January; see schools.
- A Metro Transit card or an app. If you ride, the fares are in getting around; ask whether your employer offers a pre-tax commuter benefit.
- The consulate, only when you need it. Passports, OCI cards and visas go through VFS Global’s Chicago or Detroit centres, and the consulate holds an occasional camp in Edina; read the consulate section before you book or pay anything.
- A Sunday at a temple. The Sunday feast at ISKCON Minnesota, langar after the Sunday service at the Sikh Society in Bloomington or an evening at the Hindu Temple of Minnesota in Maple Grove will produce the number of a pandit, a tax preparer and a dentist faster than any search, and the groups on Namaste Community (below) do the same without knowing anyone first.
4.Neighbourhoods and renting: 2026 rents by area and the Minnesota tenant rules
Correct or addContents ↑Rent in the Twin Cities is highest in the suburbs where most Indian families live and lowest in the two cities. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 median gross rent, which counts what every tenant actually pays, is $1,440 for the metro area, $1,487 in Hennepin County, $1,548 in Dakota County and $1,710 in Washington County. By place: Woodbury $1,908, Maple Grove $1,868, Edina $1,844, Eden Prairie $1,833, Minnetonka $1,779, Plymouth $1,766, Eagan $1,679, Minneapolis $1,371 and Saint Paul $1,281.
Zumper’s city pages, updated on 22 October 2026, give a second view: the average rent for one- and two-bedroom apartments, and a separate average for all rentals, houses and condominiums included. Zumper’s own bedroom tables, which include houses, give somewhat different numbers (Plymouth’s two-bedroom average there is $1,861, for example), so treat each figure as a range, and read Maple Grove’s low apartment figures ($1,198 and $1,498, against $2,045 for all rentals) as a floor, not a typical price.
| Area | Who lives there | What you pay and what to know (2026) |
|---|---|---|
| Plymouth, Wayzata | Families choosing the Wayzata schools; one of the two largest Indian populations among the suburbs | Zumper $1,475 / $1,800 (all rentals $1,986); census median $1,766 |
| Eden Prairie, Chanhassen | The highest Indian share in the state; India Market and India Spice House; Optum’s H-1B filings list Eden Prairie | Zumper $1,543 / $1,599 (all rentals $1,792); census median $1,833 in Eden Prairie |
| Maple Grove, Brooklyn Park | The Hindu Temple of Minnesota; Osseo schools; Target’s campus in Brooklyn Park | Zumper $1,198 / $1,498 (all rentals $2,045); census median $1,868 in Maple Grove, $1,325 in Brooklyn Park |
| Minnetonka, Hopkins | Eisenhower Community Center in Hopkins hosts the Tamil association’s Diwali | Zumper $1,595 / $1,745 (all rentals $1,725); census median $1,779 in Minnetonka, $1,468 in Hopkins |
| Edina, Bloomington | The Balaji temple, Raag and the gurdwara | Zumper $1,592 / $1,908 in Edina (all rentals $1,792); census median $1,844 in Edina, $1,561 in Bloomington |
| Woodbury, Eagan, Apple Valley | The east and south suburbs; the 2025 Diwali Mela venue; check the district of each address | Zumper $1,650 / $2,000 in Woodbury (all rentals $2,450) and $1,359 / $1,544 in Eagan (all rentals $1,599); census median $1,908 in Woodbury, $1,679 in Eagan, $1,738 in Apple Valley |
| Minneapolis | Students, young professionals, Raag and ISKCON Minnesota | Zumper $1,250 / $1,745 (all rentals $1,561); neighbourhood averages: Downtown West $1,686, Marcy-Holmes $1,655, Loring Park $1,240, Whittier $1,100; census median $1,371 |
| Saint Paul | University of St. Thomas and Concordia students, Grand Avenue, Everest on Grand | Zumper $1,150 / $1,500 (all rentals $1,395); neighbourhood averages: Downtown $1,559, Macalester Groveland $1,600, Highland $1,302, West Seventh $1,672; census median $1,281 |
How renting works here
- Heat. A landlord must provide heat of at least 68°F in all places intended for habitation, kitchens and bathrooms included, from 1 October to 30 April, unless a utility instructs a reduction, and a lease cannot waive it (Minnesota Statutes 504B.161; a 2024 change, according to CBS Minnesota). Write to the landlord first; HOME Line’s free tenant hotline, 612-728-5767, has a form letter.
- Fees. Landlords must show every non-optional fee in the “total monthly rent” on the first page of the lease and in advertisements (CBS Minnesota’s summary of the 2024 laws). Optional charges, such as a parking space or a pet, are separate.
- The deposit. The landlord must return the deposit, or send a written statement of the specific reasons for withholding, within three weeks after the tenancy ends, counted from when the landlord receives your forwarding address. Deposits earn 1% simple interest. A landlord who misses the deadline owes the amount wrongly withheld plus a penalty of the same amount, and bad-faith retention can bring punitive damages of up to $500 (504B.178). That section does not mention a cap on the size of a deposit and this guide did not find a statewide one, so ask the city about any local rule.
- Screening fees. Before taking a screening fee a landlord must tell you in writing which screening service it uses and the criteria it applies; a rejected applicant must be told within 14 days which criteria were not met, and an unused part of the fee is refundable (504B.173).
- Notices. A landlord must give 14 days’ written notice before filing an eviction for unpaid rent and at least 24 hours’ notice before entering (CBS Minnesota, on the laws taking effect in 2024).
- Income tests and guarantors. Most landlords want a multiple of the rent in monthly income, or a guarantor; the cost-of-living guide explains the workarounds for someone with no US credit history.
Scams to expect
A flat at half the going rate from an “owner abroad” who wants the deposit before a viewing; a “landlord” who asks for the deposit by gift card or wire; a basement unit advertised without a second exit; a WhatsApp “broker” who wants cash for a listing. Nobody legitimate asks you to pay to see a flat.
5.Getting around: Metro Transit fares, light rail, driving, the licence and MSP airport
Correct or addContents ↑The Twin Cities are a driving region with a real transit core. Metro Transit runs the buses and the METRO light-rail and bus-rapid-transit lines, and the suburban providers — Maple Grove Transit, Plymouth Metrolink, SouthWest Transit and the Minnesota Valley Transit Authority — run express and local routes, and Metro Transit says fixed-route fare changes apply to all of them. Outside the two cities the stretches between Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove and Woodbury are served by few routes, and most suburban households run at least one car. The fares below were read on Metro Transit’s own pages on 23 October 2026.
| Fare (October 2026) | Price |
|---|---|
| Adult (13–64), local bus and METRO, all times | $2, good for 2½ hours |
| Adult express bus | $2.50 off-peak, $3.25 at rush hour (Monday to Friday, 6–9 a.m. and 3–6:30 p.m.) |
| Reduced fare (youth 6–12, seniors 65+, Medicare card holders) | $1 local and off-peak express; $3.25 at express rush hour |
| All-day pass (buses and light rail) | Adult $4, reduced $2 |
| Downtown Zone | 50¢; Nicollet Mall is free |
| Transit Assistance Program | $1 at all times for eligible low-income riders |
A proposal published on 30 March 2026 would make the express fare $3 at all times, extend the $1 reduced fare to riders aged 6 to 18 and set Metro micro at $4; the Metropolitan Council was expected to decide in late August 2026, and this guide could not find a report of the outcome, so check the fares page before you rely on the express numbers. If approved, the fixed-route changes apply to all the regional providers, and the proposal would also cap full-fare spending at $64 a month locally and $96 on express from later in 2027.
Light rail, the airport and what is coming
The Blue Line runs from Target Field in Minneapolis to the Mall of America in Bloomington and serves both MSP terminals (Terminal 1–Lindbergh and Terminal 2–Humphrey), with free service between the terminals. Southwest light rail, the Green Line Extension from Target Field to Eden Prairie through Minnetonka, is not open yet: Metro Transit said on 26 July 2026 that the opening day, which will be in 2027, would be announced this autumn. Until then Eden Prairie and Minnetonka are car or express-bus suburbs.
Flying to India
MSP’s nonstop route map, updated on 25 September 2026, shows Amsterdam (Delta and KLM) among its featured international routes and no nonstop flight to India or the Gulf. Itineraries go through a European or Middle Eastern hub or a US gateway, so compare the total journey time and the baggage rules; see what to take to India for customs and allowances.
Driving: licence and insurance
The 60-day rule is in your first two weeks. Minnesota is a no-fault state: personal injury protection pays at least $40,000 of your own medical and income losses after a crash ($20,000 for medical expenses and $20,000 for income, replacement services and funeral costs), whoever caused it (Minnesota Statutes 65B.44). The state minimum liability limits are $30,000 per person and $60,000 per accident for bodily injury and $10,000 for property damage, with uninsured and underinsured motorist cover of $25,000 and $50,000 (Experian). Experian’s analysis of policies sold through its marketplace in September 2026, published on 13 October, gives a Minnesota average of $2,119 a year ($177 a month) across all coverage levels, $2,338 ($195 a month) for full coverage and $1,483 ($124 a month) for the minimum. These are averages, not quotes: get quotes for the address where the car will be kept, and expect a driver with no US record to pay more in the first year. The cost-of-living guide covers what a car costs nationally.
6.Minnesota winters: how cold, how much snow, snow emergencies and what to buy
Correct or addContents ↑Winter is the fact about the Twin Cities that no income table or school ranking prepares a newcomer for. At Minneapolis–Saint Paul International Airport the January daily mean is 16.2°F (a high of 23.6°F and a low of 8.8°F), the daily mean in July is 74.3°F, and snow averages 51.2 inches a year on about 38 days: 6.8 inches in November, 11.4 in December, 11.0 in January, 9.5 in February and 8.2 in March (NOAA 1991–2020 normals, as tabulated by Wikipedia). Precipitation is about 31.6 inches a year. The lowest temperature on the airport’s record, which runs back to 1872, is −41°F in January 1888. The national cost-of-living guide budgets $800–1,500 for winter clothing for a family of four who have never owned any; buy a proper coat, hat, gloves and boots in October, before the first cold week, and layers matter more than one heavy coat.
Snow emergencies in the two cities
- Minneapolis. When the city declares a snow emergency the rules run for three days. On Day 1, from 9 p.m., you may not park on either side of a Snow Emergency Route until 8 a.m. or until the street is fully ploughed. On Day 2, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., you may not park on the even-numbered side of other streets or on either side of a parkway; on Day 3 the same applies to the odd-numbered side. Between emergencies, winter parking restrictions can put cars on the odd side only, and they end by 1 April. The city’s March 2026 notice warned of tickets and a tow of about $200 and gave a standard tow charge of $222. Text MPLSAlerts to 77295 or call 612-348-SNOW (7669), which answers in English, Spanish, Somali and Hmong.
- Saint Paul. A snow emergency begins at 9 p.m. on the day it is declared and enforcement lasts up to 96 hours. Night Plow Routes, marked with signs and including all of downtown, ban parking from 9 p.m. to 7 a.m.; every street without a sign is a Day Plow Route, where you may not park from 8 a.m. until it is ploughed to the curb. The city has a parking map, and its public-works line, 651-266-8989, answers on weekdays from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
- The suburbs. Each city declares its own emergency and sets its own rules, so a Plymouth or Eden Prairie address is not covered by Minneapolis’s. Read your city’s page when you sign the lease and ask who clears the steps and the drive, because a lease for a house or townhouse can hand that job to the tenant.
Heating and the lease
Heat is the utility that swings most between July and January, and prices matter this year: the Bureau of Labor Statistics found energy prices in the Minneapolis–St. Paul area up 16.6% in the year to September 2026. Ask what last winter’s bill was. Minnesota law requires a landlord to provide at least 68°F from 1 October to 30 April, so a cold unit in an apartment is the landlord’s problem; see renting.
Practical
A garage or a covered space is worth paying for. Keep a scraper, a shovel, a blanket and jump leads in the boot from November, and children need snow trousers and waterproof boots. Ask whether a parking space has an electrical outlet, which a block heater needs, and ask the insurer and the dealer about winter tyres. Visitors from India in December or January need a coat as well, and parents travelling should check the forecast before the flight, because heavy snow can cancel flights.
7.Work and employers: health insurers, retail, banks, medical devices and the clinics
Correct or addContents ↑The Twin Cities are the home of a handful of very large companies, and the H-1B filings that list Minnesota follow that map: a health insurer and its data business, banks, retailers, medical-device makers, and the clinics and the university. The table uses a federal signal that is public and dated: the number of H-1B petitions that list a Minnesota address, read from the F1Jobs aggregator’s pages for fiscal 2025 on 23 October 2026. A petition count says who files petitions, not who is hiring; most of the filings for the big employers renew workers already here.
| Employer | Where | H-1B approvals, fiscal 2025 (new-hire / continuing) |
|---|---|---|
| Optum Services (UnitedHealth Group) | Eden Prairie | 18 / 545 |
| U.S. Bank | Minneapolis | 31 / 747 |
| Medtronic | Minneapolis | 44 / 251 |
| Target | Brooklyn Park and Minneapolis | 12 / 211 |
| Best Buy | Richfield | 5 / 140 |
| Ameriprise Financial | Minneapolis | 8 / 76 |
| Mayo Clinic | Rochester | 223 / 247 |
F1Jobs’ list of Minnesota employers by total petitions places Optum Services first (1,220 petitions across the years it covers), then U.S. Bank (1,038), Mayo Clinic (1,015), Medtronic (696), the University of Minnesota (525), Target (451) and Best Buy (338); General Mills (49) and 3M (40) are lower on it. The same list has 58 names in all, including several smaller firms with technology or consulting in their names.
The big employers in 2026
UnitedHealth Group’s Optum business, whose petitions mostly list an Eden Prairie address, is at the top of F1Jobs’ list of Minnesota petition filers. Target’s headquarters is at 1000 Nicollet Mall in Minneapolis and its Brooklyn Park campus at 7000 Target Parkway; on 28 October 2025 the company filed notices of 815 job cuts in the Twin Cities (528 at the headquarters and 287 in Brooklyn Park, from 3 January 2026), part of about 1,800 corporate roles nationally. Best Buy’s petitions list Richfield; 3M is based at 3M Center in Maplewood, near Saint Paul; General Mills says it is headquartered in Minneapolis. Medtronic’s legal and executive headquarters are in Ireland and its operational headquarters in the Twin Cities (Fridley, according to Wikipedia); it separated its diabetes business as MiniMed, whose share offering closed on 9 March 2026, and an exchange offer that would make MiniMed independent was due to expire on 9 October 2026, with the result not in the source read. With cuts, spin-offs and a weighted H-1B lottery all in the news, ask a recruiter who the team reports to and how the role is funded, not only the title.
Indian IT-services firms
Tata Consultancy Services said on 14 June 2022 that it had more than 1,000 employees in Minnesota at its Bloomington centre and would keep hiring, and Wipro announced a digital and technology centre for the Twin Cities region on 17 June 2019, with 100 local jobs to add. Neither could be confirmed with a 2026 source. Infosys, Cognizant, HCLTech and other Indian IT-services majors could not be confirmed in the Twin Cities with a dated source and are left out. The consultancy world has its own risks, explained in Indian employers and consultancies; “pay for a guaranteed job and a visa” is the oldest scam, described in the scams section of the jobs guide.
Clinics, the university and cap-exempt employers
Mayo Clinic’s Rochester campus is outside the metro area but files far more new-hire petitions (223 in fiscal 2025) than any of the corporate employers in the table. The University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota Physicians, HealthPartners and Allina Health appear in the same state list. Universities and research hospitals are cap-exempt and can file in any month, so they are a route that does not depend on the lottery; the jobs guide sets out the rules for doctors and nurses.
What Minnesota pays
The statewide minimum wage is $11.41 an hour, according to the US Department of Labor’s table updated on 1 July 2026; some cities set a higher one, and this guide did not read any city’s current rate, so check the city’s labour-standards page for your workplace. State tax and take-home pay are in the cost section.
The visa question
The H-1B is the main route and has changed twice this year: a wage-weighted lottery for the 2027 season, and a $100,000 payment on some new petitions that federal courts have handled differently, with appeals pending. All of that is national and set out in the jobs guide, with the legal routes and how to check an employer’s sponsorship record.
8.What the Twin Cities cost in 2026: Minnesota income tax, prices, insurance and rent
Correct or addContents ↑Rents in the suburbs are the largest single cost, and the costs that come with a car and a long winter follow close behind. The cost-of-living guide prices six states and Minnesota is not one of them, so use its method and its grocery basket with the local numbers below.
Income tax
Minnesota taxes income in four bands. For tax year 2026 the Department of Revenue indexed the brackets up by 2.369% on 16 December 2025 and left the rates unchanged.
| Filing status | 5.35% | 6.80% | 7.85% | 9.85% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Single | up to $33,310 | $33,311–109,430 | $109,431–203,150 | over $203,150 |
| Married filing jointly | up to $48,700 | $48,701–193,480 | $193,481–337,930 | over $337,930 |
| Head of household | up to $41,010 | $41,011–164,800 | $164,801–270,060 | over $270,060 |
The 2026 standard deduction is $15,300 for a single filer, $30,600 for a married couple filing jointly and $23,000 for a head of household, and the dependent exemption is $5,300. As an illustration, not advice, and before credits and any other deduction: a single filer with $100,000 of wages has $84,700 of taxable income and owes about $5,277 of Minnesota tax; a married couple filing jointly with $160,000 has $129,400 of taxable income and owes about $8,093. On top of federal tax and FICA, the take-home pay table shows how the sums work.
Prices this year
The Bureau of Labor Statistics found prices in the Minneapolis–St. Paul–Bloomington area up 3.6% in the 12 months to September 2026, with shelter up 3.7%, food up 2.0% and energy up 16.6%. Heating, fuel and rent are therefore where a household budget is most likely to be wrong. Rents moved differently by town: see renting.
The car
A car is close to essential in the suburbs, and Minnesota’s no-fault insurance, at about $2,119 a year on average across all coverage levels (Experian, September 2026), is a line to budget before you choose where to live; the figures are in getting around.
What a month looks like
For a single newcomer in a one-bedroom in Eden Prairie, Plymouth or Minneapolis: $1,250–1,600 in rent, the premium your employer deducts for health cover, car insurance, groceries and the winter heating bill. For a family in a two-bedroom: add childcare, which this guide could not price for Minnesota, so ask three providers near your address before you decide where to live. The costs newcomers underestimate are winter clothing, heating, car insurance and dental work, which is insured separately. Groceries are where the Indian saving is: a month of atta, dal, rice and spices from an Indian grocer costs much less in bulk than in small packets from a general supermarket, and the remittance guide explains the cheapest way to send money home.
9.Health: employer plans, MNsure, MinnesotaCare and the hospital systems
Correct or addContents ↑American health care runs on insurance, and the first job in Minnesota is to know what yours is. An employer plan is the normal route for H-1B, L-1 and most professional arrivals, with a premium taken from each pay cheque and a deductible before the plan pays; students are covered by their university’s plan. What a family plan costs in 2026, what an emergency-room visit bills and how to insure parents visiting on a tourist visa are covered in the cost-of-living guide. Choose an in-network primary-care doctor in the first month, ask your employer which hospital systems are in the network, and use an urgent-care centre for anything that is not an emergency.
The hospital systems
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, the University of Minnesota Physicians, HealthPartners and Allina Health are among the health employers that appear in federal H-1B filings for Minnesota, and the Twin Cities have other large systems this guide did not research. The right hospital is the one in your plan’s network; ask the plan before choosing a primary-care doctor.
If you are not covered
- MNsure is Minnesota’s own marketplace. Open enrolment for 2027 coverage runs from 1 November 2026 to 15 January 2027. The approved 2027 rates rise by a weighted average of 17.7%, up from the 11.9% insurers first proposed, and UCare plans will not be offered for 2027 (healthinsurance.org). The national guide explains the end of the enhanced federal tax credits that had held premiums down.
- Who gets help from 2027. If you are not a US citizen you qualify for marketplace subsidies only as a lawful permanent resident, a Cuban or Haitian entrant or a Compact of Free Association migrant; people on work and student visas can still buy a plan, at full price (healthinsurance.org). See the health section of the US guide.
- MinnesotaCare is the state’s plan for people with incomes up to 200% of the federal poverty level, and enrolment is available year-round. Ask about the effect of any benefit on a green card before you apply for it, not after.
- Free clinics and community health centres take uninsured patients, often on a sliding scale; dial 211 for the nearest.
Emergencies and mental health
Dial 911 for an emergency and 988 for the national suicide and crisis line. For a medical bill you cannot pay, ask the hospital for its financial-assistance application before you pay anything. Indian prescriptions are not honoured; get US prescriptions for anything long-term.
10.Schools: Wayzata, Eden Prairie, Osseo and the other districts, open enrolment and the school year
Correct or addContents ↑Public schools in Minnesota are run by local districts, and the district, not the city, is the reason families pay what they do for a house in Plymouth, Eden Prairie or Edina. District lines do not follow city lines, so check the district of the exact address before you sign a lease. This page does not rank schools. The table gives each district’s size and the share of pupils the federal Common Core of Data records as Asian, which is every Asian group and not only Indian pupils (Saint Paul’s figure includes its large Hmong community), for the 2024–25 school year; it says who is there, not how well they are taught.
| District (2024–25) | Pupils | Asian pupils | Share |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saint Paul Public Schools | 33,041 | 9,271 | 28.1% |
| Wayzata Public Schools (offices in Plymouth) | 12,951 | 2,812 | 21.7% |
| Osseo Area Schools (offices in Maple Grove) | 21,138 | 3,384 | 16.0% |
| Eden Prairie Schools | 9,292 | 1,261 | 13.6% |
| South Washington County Schools (offices in Cottage Grove) | 19,578 | 2,651 | 13.5% |
| Anoka-Hennepin | 38,354 | 4,179 | 10.9% |
| Mounds View | 11,934 | 1,234 | 10.3% |
| Lakeville Area Schools | 12,025 | 939 | 7.8% |
| Edina Public Schools | 8,794 | 681 | 7.7% |
| Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan (offices in Rosemount) | 29,224 | 2,228 | 7.6% |
| Minnetonka Public Schools | 11,323 | 758 | 6.7% |
| Bloomington Public Schools | 10,442 | 607 | 5.8% |
| Minneapolis Public Schools | 29,928 | 1,013 | 3.4% |
Open enrolment, the calendar and the age rule
Minnesota lets a child attend a school or district other than the one where the family lives. The application for the following school year is due on 15 January; a district that has more applicants than places holds a lottery, must tell you its decision by 15 February, and you must confirm by 1 March. A district may not refuse on grounds such as English proficiency, prior grades or a disability, but it may refuse for lack of capacity, and the district where you take the seat provides transport within its own boundaries if you ask (Minnesota Statutes 124D.03). A child must be five by 1 September to start kindergarten (120A.20). A district may not start the school year before Labor Day, which was Monday 7 September in 2026, except for building projects and a few other cases (120A.40), so the first day is in the week after Labor Day. Diwali falls on a Sunday this year, 8 November, so no school day is lost to it; in other years check the district calendar.
Results
Minnesota publishes test results and demographics for every school in its state Report Card, and this guide did not read the 2026 results. They are worth reading by school and grade, not by district headline.
Childcare, universities and weekend schools
This guide could not price childcare for Minnesota from a source it could open, so ask three providers near the address you are considering. For students, the University of Minnesota–Twin Cities had 6,231 international students in 2024/25 and Minnesota State University, Mankato 1,837 (Open Doors 2025); the rules for F-1 status are in the jobs guide. The temples and the gurdwara run most of the weekend teaching: the Hindu Society of Minnesota lists the Hindu American Temple School (HATS) and Hindu Youth of MN (HYMN) among its services, the Sikh Society of Minnesota runs the Guru Arjan Dev School for Punjabi language and heritage, and the Balaji temple’s site has pages for dance classes. Ask in the groups below which other classes are running now.
11.Indian groceries, sweets and restaurants by area
Correct or addContents ↑Indian shopping in the Twin Cities is spread across the suburbs rather than along one street: Eden Prairie in the south-west, Apple Valley in the south and Woodbury in the east. The stores below are local ones, not a national chain’s. The ones with their own sites were checked against them on 23 October 2026; the rest rest on a dated report or a map listing, as each entry says.
Eden Prairie
- India Market, 574 Prairie Center Drive #125, Eden Prairie 55344, is a store that a blogger who reviewed it on 6 February 2025 describes as very large, with a butcher counter and a café, comprehensive spice aisles and a presence in Eden Prairie since 2018. Its own site, copyright 2026, gives the address and phone, 952-944-3344.
- India Spice House, 8445 Joiner Way, Eden Prairie, runs a grocery and a restaurant that serves Hyderabadi dum biryani, dosa, curries and tandoori dishes. The grocery is open Monday to Friday 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and at weekends 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.; lunch is served Monday to Friday 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and at weekends 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and dinner starts at 5 p.m.
Woodbury and Apple Valley
- Fresh India Grocery and Eatery, 441 Commerce Drive, Woodbury 55125, is an Indian grocery and eatery in Woodbury; the address is on a Too Good To Go listing, which gave no reliable hours, so confirm them by phone.
- Spice Village, in Apple Valley, opened a restaurant and grocery in July 2025, selling Indian snacks, spices and custom-cut meats, with a restaurant open Tuesday to Sunday; Bring Me The News, which reported it on 29 July 2025, gave no street address.
Minneapolis and Saint Paul
- Raag, 3812 West 50th Street, Minneapolis (at 50th and France, on the Edina border), calls itself modern Indian dining and is open for lunch and dinner daily, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. (9:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday); its website lists Diwali events in October 2026 (see the festival year).
- Everest on Grand, 1278 Grand Avenue, Saint Paul 55105, serves Nepalese, Tibetan and North Indian food.
Plymouth and Maple Grove
No Indian grocer or restaurant in Plymouth or Maple Grove could be confirmed from its own site, a report from this year or a current listing, so a missing name here is a gap in this guide, not proof that none exists. The Hindu Temple of Minnesota lists a food service among its services (see temples).
Halal, sweets and the rest
Halal meat and groceries are covered in the neighbours section. Namaste Community’s directory is where to add the shop that is missing and to review the one that saved your Diwali: browse the Indian businesses in the US. This guide could not check which of the businesses above are already listed there.

12.Temples, the gurdwara, the Jain temple and ISKCON
Correct or addContents ↑The Twin Cities’ large Hindu, Sikh and Jain institutions are in the suburbs, on campuses with their own parking, and most are reached by car; ISKCON Minnesota is in south Minneapolis. Confirm times with each before going, because hours change for festivals. The US temples page lists other metro areas and does not yet include the Twin Cities, so the places below are named here.
| Place | Address | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Hindu Temple of Minnesota (Hindu Society of Minnesota) | 10530 Temple Drive, Maple Grove MN 55311, as the temple’s site gives it (the Jain Center still lists 10530 Troy Lane N); 1 (833) 469-4766 | 43,000 square feet and 21 mini temples; summer hours (April–October) Monday to Friday 9:30–11:30 a.m. and 5:30–8:30 p.m., weekends and holidays 9 a.m.–8:30 p.m.; winter hours (November–March) end at 8 p.m. |
| Sri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple | 7615 Metro Boulevard, Edina; 952-835-2250 | Monday to Friday 9:30 a.m.–12 noon and 5:30–8 p.m., Saturday and Sunday 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. and 5–8 p.m.; Hanuman abhishekam on the first Saturday, Venkateswara abhishekam on the third Saturday, Rudrabhishekam on Mondays, kumkumarchana on Friday at 7 p.m. |
| ISKCON Minnesota | 4000 Minnehaha Avenue, Minneapolis MN 55406; +1 (763) 691-3049 | Evening programmes Monday to Friday and Saturday evening at 6:30 p.m., Saturday morning 9 a.m.–12 noon; Sunday feast 4–7:30 p.m. with arti at 4:30, a discourse at 5:30 and a free vegetarian feast at 6:30 p.m. |
| Sikh Society of Minnesota (Gurdwara Sahib) | 9000 W. Bloomington Freeway, Bloomington MN 55431; 952-888-2705 | Open every day; Friday evening service 5–8:30 p.m. with langar at 8 p.m.; Sunday service 9:30 a.m.–1:30 p.m. with langar from 12:30 p.m. |
| BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir | 2300 Freeway Boulevard, Brooklyn Center MN 55430, as BAPS lists it; a new mandir is planned at 1432 Hamel Road, Medina | BAPS’s congregation meets in a former Salvation Army building in Brooklyn Center; see below; confirm times on baps.org |
| Jain Center of Minnesota | The Jain temple inside the Hindu Temple of Minnesota, Maple Grove | Formed in October 1989; more than 100 families; 2026 programme on its site |
Hindu Minnesota
The Hindu Society of Minnesota, which describes its temple as the largest Hindu temple in North America, has 21 mini temples under one roof, which its site calls replicas of famous temples from all regions of India; MPR counted 19 shrines at the 2009 opening. It runs the daily puja, a food service, a gift shop, car puja, the Hindu American Temple School and Hindu Youth of MN, and rents its halls. The Sri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple in Edina grew out of services that Madhu Reddy and Dr Jyothsna Reddy began in their Golden Valley office building in 2009; they bought an old spa building in Edina in 2011, and the temple draws worshippers from Plymouth to Chaska and Shakopee, according to the Chanhassen Villager in 2018.
The BAPS mandir
BAPS’s congregation meets at 2300 Freeway Boulevard in Brooklyn Center. A groundbreaking ceremony was scheduled for 6 July 2024 at 1432 Hamel Road, just west of Plymouth, for a new mandir with a worship space, classrooms and a gymnasium, built by volunteers, which BAPS’s outreach coordinator hoped would open in about two years. In June 2025 temple officials also asked Brooklyn Park’s planning commission, which approved the plan on 11 June, to allow a move to 8700 Wyoming Avenue, saying the congregation had outgrown its building. This guide could not confirm which of the two sites is open, so ring +1 (763) 278-2288 (the number BAPS’s Minneapolis page lists) before you go.
Sikh, Jain and ISKCON
The Sikh Society of Minnesota calls itself the only gurdwara in the state and says it has stood for over 25 years; it also runs a school, a library and a medical clinic. As at every gurdwara, visitors cover their heads (head coverings are provided at the door) and remove their shoes. The Jain Center’s site gives the temple’s address as the Hindu Temple’s and lists its 2026 programme: Mahavir Janma Kalyanak on 25 April, Paryushan from 9 to 15 September, Das Lakshan from 16 to 25 September and Kshamavani on 26 September. ISKCON Minnesota’s site lists a “new temple project” page and gives its Minneapolis address; its Sunday feast is open to anyone.
Mosques and churches

13.Associations, community organisations, culture and classes
Correct or addContents ↑Indian Minnesota is organised by language, region and religion as well as by suburb, and the associations are where the festivals, the language classes and the help happen. Many are volunteer-run, meet in temple halls, community centres and school auditoriums, and change committees every year, so the current contact is usually a number passed on by someone who went last year.
Community organisations
- India Association of Minnesota (IAM), founded in 1973, calls itself non-religious and non-political and describes a mission of culture, charity and connections, with an IWIN women’s network, outreach, government relations, an oral-history project and a group for South Asians against racial injustice. Its annual general body meeting is on 15 November 2026 at the Kaposia Library in South St. Paul, and registration is free.
- Hindu Society of Minnesota — the temple’s education, youth and cultural programmes, and its Diwali Mela (see the festival year).
- Jain Center of Minnesota — pujas and festivals, a sports programme that includes pickleball and the JCM Premier League cricket tournament, a picnic and its annual meeting, listed on its 2026 events page.
- Sikh Society of Minnesota — the Guru Arjan Dev School, the library and a medical clinic.
- Consulate General of India, Chicago — supports community events in Minnesota; the consulate’s homepage lists an Indian film reception at the 45th Minneapolis St. Paul International Film Festival on 19 April 2026.
Regional and language groups
- Minnesota Tamil Sangam says it has served Minnesota since 2003, and the TwinCities Tamil Association (TCTA) describes itself as dedicated to Tamil language, arts and culture in the Twin Cities.
- Gujarati Samaj of Minnesota describes itself as a cultural, charitable and educational non-profit based in Minneapolis, with thousands of members and supporters, and holds Diwali, Navratri and Spring Festival celebrations.
- Minnesota Hindi Association says that it began in 2022 to connect families from the Hindi heartland, through festivals and language for the next generation.
- Groups for other languages and regions — Telugu, Bengali, Malayali, Marathi and Kannada among the ones to ask about — are likely to exist, and this guide could not confirm their current names; the groups on Namaste Community are where the current ones surface, and the events listings carry their programmes.
Classes, culture and the arts
The temples run most of the weekend teaching (see schools). The Balaji temple’s site lists a Natyamanjari 2026 dance programme and dance classes, and a monthly calendar of pujas. Dance schools and cricket academies run in the Indian suburbs; ask other parents before you pay a term’s fees.
14.The festival year in the Twin Cities, 2026
Correct or addContents ↑The Twin Cities’ festival calendar runs through the temples, community centres and rented halls: garba in October, Diwali as a run of temple programmes and one large mela in the east suburbs, and the cultural associations’ evenings in November. Only dates the organisers publish are given here, and several large organisers had not posted a 2026 Diwali programme when this page was written.
| Festival | When (2026) | Where | Organiser |
|---|---|---|---|
| Navratri and Dussehra | From Sunday 11 October to Dussehra on Tuesday 20 October | Temples and halls; the Gujarati Samaj of Minnesota’s site says it holds Navratri events, but no 2026 garba dates were found | Not posted by the organisers this guide could read |
| Diwali After Dark | Friday 23 October, 10 p.m. to midnight; free | Raag, 50th and France, Minneapolis | Raag |
| Diwali weekend: grand buffet and free bazaar | Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 October, 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (the post’s title says 23–25 October) | Raag, 3812 West 50th Street, Minneapolis | Raag |
| Diwali | Sunday 8 November 2026 | Diwali Nirvan Pooja, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the Jain Center of Minnesota (Hindu Temple of Minnesota, Maple Grove); no programme found at the other temples or the gurdwara | The Jain Center of Minnesota |
| Gurpurab (Guru Nanak’s birthday) | Tuesday 24 November | The Sikh Society of Minnesota, Bloomington; no programme posted | Sikh Society of Minnesota |
| TCTA Deepavali | Sunday 22 November, 3 p.m. | Eisenhower Community Center, 1001 MN-7, Hopkins; a live musical show | TwinCities Tamil Association |
| Hindu Society’s Diwali Mela | 18 October in 2025 (Woodbury); the temple’s Diwali Mela page still carried the previous edition’s ticketing, and no 2026 date was found | M Health Fairview Sports Center, 4125 Radio Drive, Woodbury, in 2025 | Hindu Society of Minnesota |
Diwali, explained
Diwali 2026 is on Sunday 8 November, with Dhanteras on Friday 6 November, Choti Diwali on Saturday 7 November, Govardhan Puja and Annakut on Monday 9 November and Bhai Dooj on Tuesday 10 November. Lakshmi puja is performed after sunset, and each temple sets its own times. The Jain Center’s calendar lists its Diwali Nirvan Pooja on 8 November from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. (it labels the day a Saturday, but 8 November 2026 is a Sunday, so confirm the date). The Hindu Society’s Diwali Mela, run since 2011, draws as many as a thousand people each year, according to the Sahan Journal’s report of the 18 October 2025 edition at the Woodbury sports centre, with dhol tasha drumming, dance performances, vendors and street food. The Balaji temple’s 2026 events page lists an Ashwini Devata Homam on 25 October but no Diwali programme, ISKCON Minnesota’s festivals page was empty, the Sikh Society’s calendar showed no Bandi Chhor Divas programme and BAPS’s pages could not be read, so ring each before you go. The Chicago consulate is closed on Diwali, Sunday 8 November, and on Guru Nanak’s Birthday, Tuesday 24 November. The Diwali in Minneapolis page collects the 2026 events as organisers confirm them.
The other rhythms
Spring brings Holi and the Minnesota Hindi Association’s Rangotsav, summer the picnics and sports tournaments of the associations, and the Jain Center’s Paryushan in September. Winter moves indoors to the temples and halls. The events posted near Minneapolis appear below, and the full Minneapolis events calendar carries the rest.

15.WhatsApp groups, and finding your people in Minneapolis on Namaste Community
Correct or addContents ↑The Twin Cities’ Indian community runs on WhatsApp. There are groups for a suburb, an employer’s new joiners, a temple’s volunteers, a language or region, a university’s incoming class, a cricket team and a “rooms in Eden Prairie” market. The groups are how the community has always organised itself, and nothing on this page will change that.
What the groups are good at, and what they are not
They are fast and generous. Ask at ten at night which Plymouth dentist speaks Gujarati, or whether an Eden Prairie shop is open on Diwali morning, and someone answers before eleven. But you need to know somebody to be added, the links in circulation are often dead, and a group of a thousand strangers is exactly where the “guaranteed job, pay the training fee first” and “room in Woodbury, send the deposit today” scams begin. Every member sees your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: a room in Brooklyn Park and a garba in Woodbury arrive with the same weight as the one around the corner.
What Namaste Community adds
Namaste Community keeps the community’s groups, events and businesses for the Twin Cities in one place, alongside the same pages for other cities and countries.
- Groups for Minneapolis. The site lists local groups for the area at /groups/in/usa/minneapolis. They are moderated and limited to people who live within a set distance of the group’s town, and your phone number is never shown to other members. Everyone in the United States is in the country group, so if there is no group yet for your suburb, language or interest, the first one is yours to start.
- Events. Diwali programmes and meetups are in the Minneapolis events calendar, which covers everything within 20 km of a point west of downtown — Plymouth, Edina, Eden Prairie, Minnetonka, Maple Grove and Minneapolis itself — so Woodbury and Eagan sit outside it and Saint Paul is at its edge.
- A directory. Grocers, restaurants, temples and services are listed in the US directory, with reviews from people who used them.
- Ask. A question about rent in Plymouth, a tax preparer in Eden Prairie or a Tamil class in Hopkins can be asked once in the app’s Ask section, where the answer stays for the next person instead of scrolling away, and you can ask without giving your name.
Your first week
- Open the Minneapolis groups and join the ones for your suburb, your language or your interest — or start the first. Read before you post.
- Go to one event in your first fortnight — a Sunday feast at ISKCON, langar in Bloomington, an evening at the Hindu Temple in Maple Grove, a Diwali programme. It is the fastest way from “the Indian community in Minneapolis” as a phrase to three people whose names you know.
- Ask the question you actually have, and say which suburb you are in: the rent, school and commute answers differ between Plymouth, Woodbury, Eagan and Saint Paul.
- When you have found your flat, your doctor and your grocer, leave a review or an answer for the next person arriving from Hyderabad, Ahmedabad or Kathmandu.
16.Pakistani, Nepali, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan neighbours in the Twin Cities
Correct or addContents ↑The Twin Cities have smaller Pakistani, Nepali, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan communities beside the Indian one: 3,268, 2,498, 1,550 and 1,570 people in the metro area, against 47,174 Indians. Everything on this page about renting, no-fault insurance, schools, health cover and scams applies identically to all of them; the differences are the consulate, the festival calendar and the aisle you head for. The festival calendars differ — Eid and the national days for Pakistanis and Bangladeshis, Dashain and Tihar for Nepalis, the Tamil New Year in April for many Sri Lankans — and the shopkeepers in south Minneapolis, Saint Paul and the suburbs serve them all.
| Group (alone or in combination, 2020–2024) | Twin Cities metro area | Minnesota |
|---|---|---|
| Pakistani | 3,268 (±909) | 3,613 (±964) |
| Nepalese | 2,498 (±662) | 3,023 (±707) |
| Sri Lankan | 1,570 (±565) | 1,927 (±598) |
| Bangladeshi | 1,550 (±523) | 1,935 (±572) |
Nepali
The 2020–2024 survey counts 2,404 residents of the metro area born in Nepal (±624), and Nepal sent 6% of Minnesota’s international students in 2024/25, third after India and China. Everest on Grand in Saint Paul serves Nepalese, Tibetan and North Indian food. A Nepali newcomer does consular business with Nepal’s own embassy or consulate, not the Indian one.
Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Sri Lankan
The Pakistani count is the largest of the four, and the survey puts the largest town count at Woodbury, with 1,022 Pakistani residents. The Bangladeshi count is small, 1,550 in the metro area, and the Sri Lankan community is of similar size; its festival dates — Pongal in January, the Tamil New Year in April — surface in the groups below. These are small samples with wide margins of error (Woodbury’s Pakistani count is ±749, and Saint Paul’s 301 Nepalese residents ±206), so this guide quotes metro-area and state counts and treats any town count for these four groups as a guide, not a measurement.
Where South Asia is a larger share
The Hmong are the largest Asian group in the metro area by a wide margin (101,405 in the same table), and Asian residents of all groups number 258,764 who report Asian alone. Newcomers from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka therefore meet neighbours and shopkeepers from many Asian communities, not one. Ask in the groups below for the shop that stocks what you need, halal meat included, because this guide could not confirm halal suppliers one by one.
17.The Indian consulate, VFS, help lines and safety
Correct or addContents ↑Consular services
Minnesota is in the area of the Consulate General of India in Chicago, at 455 N. Cityfront Plaza Drive, Suite 850 (NBC Tower), Chicago IL 60611. Its passport-services and miscellaneous-services pages both name Minnesota among the seven states it covers, with Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Missouri and Wisconsin. Since 1 August 2025 consular services have been offered through VFS Global, and the consulate’s homepage, updated on 20 October 2026, lists two centres: Chicago, at 180 North Stetson Avenue, Suite 2075, 20th floor, and Detroit, at Suite 110, 28 W. Adams Street. There is no centre in Minnesota. For miscellaneous services the applicant pays US$19 to VFS Global and US$2 to the Indian Community Welfare Fund on top of the government fee. The consulate sometimes comes to you: its “Consulate @ your doorstep” camp for consular, OCI, visa and passport services was held on Saturday 27 June 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., in the Normandale Community Room, 6100 Normandale Road, Edina MN 55436, with a partner that the consulate’s page names as the Indian Association of Minnesota, and no later Minnesota camp was posted. The consulate’s news list also shows 2026 camps in St. Louis on 6 June and in Indianapolis on 26 September. The fees, documents and steps are national and are in the OCI card guide and the passport renewal guide; the Chicago guide covers the consulate itself.
The consulate was closed on Tuesday 20 October 2026 for Dussehra; its 2026 holiday list shows Diwali on Sunday 8 November and Guru Nanak’s Birthday on Tuesday 24 November.
Beware of calls from “the consulate”
The consulate warns that fraudsters are spoofing its own numbers, 312-595-0405 and 312-595-0406, to ask for personal information or money. It says no official calls to ask for personal information or payment, that requests for documents come only from addresses at mea.gov.in, and that suspicious calls can be reported to hoc.chicago@mea.gov.in with the subject “INFORMATION ON SPOOFED CALLS”. The “digital arrest” and fake-officer scams are described in the remittance guide.
Help lines
- 911 for police, fire and ambulance; 988 for the suicide and crisis line; 211 for local services and charities.
- Consulate emergencies: +1-312-753-8530, 24 hours, for Indian nationals seeking immediate emergency assistance only.
- HOME Line, Minnesota’s free tenant hotline: 612-728-5767 (Spanish 612-255-8870, Somali 612-255-8860, Hmong 612-255-7104), or 866-866-3546 toll-free from outside the Twin Cities.
- Immigrant Law Center of Minnesota: general intake 1-800-223-1368 (Monday 10 a.m.–1 p.m., Tuesday 1–4 p.m., Wednesday 10 a.m.–1 p.m., Thursday 3–6 p.m.) and an ICE detention line, 651-641-1011, Monday to Thursday 1–3 p.m.
Your status, in 2025–26
The rules around status changed repeatedly in 2025 and 2026, and a mistake now costs more: the weighted H-1B lottery, the $100,000 payment on some new petitions, and the end of open-ended student status for F and J visa holders who enter on or after 15 September 2026 are all set out in the jobs guide. The practical rules: keep copies of every I-797, I-20 and pay slip, never let a grace period run out unnoticed, use a free immigration legal service before you pay a consultant, and treat any caller who says your visa will be cancelled unless you pay as a fraudster.
Safety, honestly
Between early December 2025 and 12 February 2026 the Twin Cities were the centre of Operation Metro Surge, a federal immigration-enforcement operation that the Department of Homeland Security called the largest it had carried out. About 3,000 federal officers took part at its peak, reported arrests passed 3,700, and federal agents shot and killed two US citizens in Minneapolis in January 2026; the state and the two cities sued, a federal judge declined to halt it, and the end was announced on 12 February (Minnesota Reformer’s timeline). That article does not mention Indian residents, it says a residual force of 650 officers remained in early March, and the Immigrant Law Center’s homepage carried notices through 12 October 2026 about new detention capacity and enforcement aimed at Somali Minnesotans. This guide could not check current enforcement. The practical rules are the ordinary ones for any non-citizen: keep your papers, and copies of them, where you can reach them, know the number of a free legal service before you need it, and do not sign anything you have not read. For ordinary street safety, most Indian families live in the suburbs, and the usual rules apply: keep valuables out of sight in a parked car, lock it and take the key with you, and be careful late at night in unfamiliar streets. The scams that hurt newcomers most are housing and job frauds, not street crime: fake listings, “training fees” for jobs, and calls from people pretending to be the consulate, the police or immigration.
The weather, and what to read next
Read the winter section before the first week of November. The national rules on jobs and visas, cost of living, the OCI card, passports and remittances are in the guides linked above, and Indians in the USA lists events, groups and businesses across the country.
Questions people ask
- How many Indians live in Minneapolis?
- About 47,200 people who identify as Asian Indian, alone or with another group, live in the Minneapolis–St. Paul–Bloomington metro area: 47,174 (±2,587) in the Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 American Community Survey, about 1.3% of its 3.7 million residents and nine in ten of Minnesota’s 52,192. The city of Minneapolis itself has 4,787 (1.1%). A separate table counts 28,214 metro residents born in India.
- Where do most Indians live in the Twin Cities?
- Mostly in the suburbs, west, south and east of downtown. The 2020–2024 survey counts 4,767 in Plymouth, 4,340 in Eden Prairie, 2,623 in Woodbury, 2,592 in Maple Grove and 2,338 in Eagan, beside 4,787 in the city of Minneapolis; Hennepin County alone has 25,709. Eden Prairie (6.9%) and Plymouth (6.0%) have the highest Indian share of any Minnesota place above 25,000 residents, and the margins of error are large, so the order of the top three towns is not reliable.
- What is the best area to live in Minneapolis for Indians?
- It depends on the stage of life and the school district. Families usually choose Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove, Edina or Woodbury for the schools, the temples and the shops; a first year without children is often spent in Minneapolis or Saint Paul. Census median rents are higher in Woodbury ($1,908) or Eden Prairie ($1,833) than in Minneapolis ($1,371) or Saint Paul ($1,281), and you need a car in the suburbs and a plan for winter, so check the commute, the district and the insurance quote for the address.
- How much is rent in the Twin Cities in 2026?
- Zumper’s averages of 22 October 2026 for one- and two-bedroom apartments are $1,475 and $1,800 in Plymouth, $1,543 and $1,599 in Eden Prairie, $1,592 and $1,908 in Edina, $1,650 and $2,000 in Woodbury, $1,250 and $1,745 in Minneapolis and $1,150 and $1,500 in Saint Paul. The Census Bureau’s 2020–2024 median gross rent, which counts all tenants, is $1,440 for the metro area and $1,908 in Woodbury.
- What are the Minnesota heat, deposit and screening-fee rules?
- A landlord must provide at least 68°F in all places intended for habitation from 1 October to 30 April, and a lease cannot waive it. The deposit, or a written statement of why it is withheld, is due within three weeks after the tenancy ends, counted from when the landlord has your forwarding address, and it earns 1% simple interest. A landlord must name the screening service and criteria before taking a screening fee and tell a rejected applicant within 14 days.
- What is the Minnesota income tax rate in 2026?
- Minnesota taxes income at 5.35%, 6.80%, 7.85% and 9.85% for 2026. For a single filer the 5.35% band ends at $33,310, the 6.80% band at $109,430 and the 7.85% band at $203,150; for a married couple filing jointly the bands end at $48,700, $193,480 and $337,930. The standard deduction is $15,300 single and $30,600 joint, and the Department of Revenue indexed the brackets by 2.369% for 2026.
- How cold are Twin Cities winters, and what is a snow emergency?
- At the airport the January daily mean is 16.2°F, snow averages 51.2 inches a year on about 38 days and the record low is −41°F (NOAA 1991–2020 normals). A snow emergency is a city declaration that bans parking on certain streets while they are ploughed: Minneapolis runs one over three days with different rules for route streets and for each side of other streets, and Saint Paul’s begins at 9 p.m. and lasts 96 hours. Cars left in the way are ticketed and towed, so sign up for the city’s alerts.
- Do I need a car in Minneapolis and the suburbs?
- In the suburbs, in practice yes. Metro Transit local buses and light rail cost $2 at all times, express buses $2.50 off-peak and $3.25 at rush hour, and an all-day pass is $4, but Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Maple Grove and Woodbury are thinly served and Southwest light rail will not open until 2027. A new resident may drive on a licence from another jurisdiction for up to 60 days, and Minnesota is a no-fault state: Experian’s September 2026 average is $2,119 a year across all coverage levels.
- What are the main Hindu temples, gurdwara and Jain temple near Minneapolis?
- The Hindu Temple of Minnesota (Hindu Society of Minnesota) in Maple Grove, with 21 mini temples and the Jain temple inside it; the Sri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple at 7615 Metro Boulevard in Edina; and ISKCON Minnesota at 4000 Minnehaha Avenue in Minneapolis, with a Sunday feast from 4 p.m. The Sikh Society of Minnesota’s gurdwara is at 9000 W. Bloomington Freeway in Bloomington. BAPS’s congregation meets at 2300 Freeway Boulevard in Brooklyn Center, and a new BAPS mandir was planned at 1432 Hamel Road in Medina, with a groundbreaking set for July 2024; confirm which site is open.
- Where can I buy Indian groceries in the Twin Cities?
- India Market at 574 Prairie Center Drive in Eden Prairie and India Spice House at 8445 Joiner Way in Eden Prairie are the south-west’s two that this guide could confirm. Fresh India Grocery and Eatery is at 441 Commerce Drive in Woodbury, and Spice Village opened a restaurant and grocery in Apple Valley in July 2025. No Indian grocer in Plymouth, Maple Grove or Minneapolis could be confirmed from its own site or a current report, and Raag, at 3812 West 50th Street, is the Minneapolis restaurant this guide checked.
- When is Diwali in Minneapolis in 2026, and what events are there?
- Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026. The Jain Center of Minnesota lists a Diwali Nirvan Pooja from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day at the Hindu Temple of Minnesota in Maple Grove; Raag in Minneapolis has a Diwali weekend buffet and bazaar on 24 and 25 October; and the TwinCities Tamil Association’s Deepavali is on Sunday 22 November at 3 p.m. in Hopkins. The Hindu Society’s Diwali Mela was held on 18 October in 2025 and no 2026 date had been posted. Navratri ran from 11 October to Dussehra on 20 October.
- Where do I apply for an Indian passport or OCI card in Minnesota?
- Minnesota is in the area of the Consulate General of India in Chicago, and applications go through VFS Global’s centres in Chicago (180 North Stetson Avenue, Suite 2075) or Detroit (28 W. Adams Street, Suite 110); there is no centre in Minnesota. The consulate held a consular camp in Edina on 27 June 2026 and had posted no later Minnesota camp. VFS charges US$19 plus the consulate’s US$2 welfare-fund contribution on top of the government fee for miscellaneous services.
- Which school districts have the most Indian students near Minneapolis?
- In the 2024–25 school year the federal data record Asian pupils as 21.7% of Wayzata (12,951 pupils), 16.0% of Osseo (21,138), 13.6% of Eden Prairie (9,292), 13.5% of South Washington County (19,578), 7.7% of Edina (8,794) and 6.7% of Minnetonka (11,323). Those counts cover all Asian pupils, not only Indian ones, and say nothing about quality. The address decides the district, and Minnesota’s open enrolment application for the next year is due on 15 January.
