Indian businesses and services in Atlanta, United States

Atlanta's South Asian community has grown mostly in the suburbs, and the map of where to shop reflects that. Established clusters of Indian grocers and restaurants sit along Lawrenceville Highway in the Decatur area and around Jimmy Carter Boulevard in Norcross, while newer arrivals have settled further north in Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Cumming, Duluth and Suwanee, where plazas along the main roads carry groceries, sweets, clothing and restaurants.

The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Lilburn, a large hand-carved stone mandir opened in 2007 that welcomes visitors, is a landmark for the whole community. South of the city, the Hindu Temple of Atlanta in Riverdale, established in 1984, draws visitors from across the region. Gurdwaras, Jain centres and mosques serving Pakistani, Bangladeshi and Indian Muslim families are spread across Gwinnett, Fulton and DeKalb counties.

Atlanta is a driving city, and traffic on I-285 and GA-400 can be heavy at weekends as well as on weekdays, so allow extra time for trips to temples or grocers on the other side of the metro. Navratri garba is one of the biggest community events of the year, held in large rented halls, and Diwali is marked at temples and community festivals. MARTA's rail lines stop well short of Johns Creek, Cumming and the other northern suburbs, so a car is the practical way to get between them.
