Ask anyone in the Triangle where the Indian community is and the answer will usually be Cary and Morrisville. The growth of Research Triangle Park, along with the universities in Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill, brought a steady stream of software engineers, scientists and doctors from India over several decades, and many settled in the western suburbs between Raleigh and RTP. Apex, Durham and north Raleigh have sizeable communities of their own.

Morrisville is home to the Hindu Society of North Carolina, founded in 1976 and at its temple there since 1986, and Cary has the Sri Venkateswara Temple of North Carolina, built in a South Indian style and busy with weekend pujas. The area also has gurdwaras, Jain and Swaminarayan congregations, and mosques with large South Asian congregations. Indian grocery stores, sweet shops and restaurants are concentrated in the shopping centres of Cary and Morrisville, and on Saturday and Sunday afternoons their car parks fill up quickly.

Students at NC State, Duke and UNC Chapel Hill form a younger part of the community, with campus associations that run their own Diwali and Holi events. The larger public celebrations, including Diwali melas and Navratri garba, are organised by temples and cultural associations, typically in autumn. Buses connect the main towns, but service is limited, so most people get around by car.
