Indian businesses and services in Jersey City, United States

Newark Avenue near Journal Square, the stretch known as India Square, is the heart of South Asian Jersey City. Within a few blocks you will find grocers, sweet shops, sari and jewellery stores, restaurants cooking food from many regions of India, and the travel agents and money-transfer offices that serve a working community. The district has been described as having the highest concentration of Asian Indians in the Western Hemisphere, and its customers come from many regions of India and from across South Asia.

Getting there is easy. Journal Square's PATH station has direct trains to the World Trade Center and to 33rd Street in Midtown Manhattan, and the Journal Square Transportation Center is also a busy bus hub. Newark Avenue is at its busiest on weekend afternoons and evenings, and parking is tight, so the PATH is the sensible choice for most visitors.

The neighbourhood comes into its own around the festivals. Navratri brings garba and dandiya nights to halls and community spaces across Hudson County, and before Diwali the shops are decorated and the queues at sweet counters run out of the door. Mandirs, mosques and gurdwaras serving the community are spread through Jersey City and neighbouring towns. This page covers Jersey City and the western side of the Hudson as far as Newark; Edison and Iselin, with Oak Tree Road, have their own page.
