Oak Tree Road, running through Edison and Iselin in Woodbridge Township, is one of the largest South Asian shopping streets in the United States. A run of storefronts about a mile and a half long carries everything from groceries and sweets to bridal wear, gold jewellery and puja supplies, and on weekend afternoons the traffic and parking reflect it. Middlesex County as a whole has one of the largest Indian-American communities in the country, with families in Edison, Piscataway, South Plainfield, Plainsboro and South Brunswick; in the 2020 Census about 35 percent of Edison residents identified as Indian American, and county ballots are printed in Gujarati, Hindi and Punjabi as well as English and Spanish.

Temples are a short drive away. The Sri Venkateswara Temple in Bridgewater, in neighbouring Somerset County, draws devotees from across the region, and further south the BAPS Swaminarayan Akshardham in Robbinsville, opened in 2023, has become a destination in its own right. Gurdwaras and mosques serve the Sikh and Muslim communities across the county.

Navratri is a big event here, with garba nights drawing large crowds to halls and tents across central New Jersey, and Diwali brings decorated storefronts and long queues at the sweet shops along Oak Tree Road. Navratri's nine nights fall in late September or October depending on the year, so confirm the dates before planning a trip. NJ Transit's Northeast Corridor line stops at Edison and at Metropark in Iselin, which puts the area within reach of New York by train, though a car makes shopping far easier.
