Indian businesses and services in Charlotte, United States

Charlotte's South Asian community is younger than the city's banking skyline might suggest, built largely over the past few decades by engineers, finance professionals, doctors and students. There is no single Indian quarter. Many families live in the southern suburbs, around Ballantyne and in Union County towns such as Marvin, Waxhaw and Weddington, and University City, near UNC Charlotte, has a second, smaller cluster of Indian grocery stores and casual restaurants.

The Hindu Center of Charlotte, open since 1982, is one of the established places of worship for the community, and there are further mandirs, gurdwaras and mosques with South Asian congregations across Mecklenburg and the surrounding counties. Many host weekend classes in Hindi, Gujarati, Telugu or Tamil, and their noticeboards and mailing lists are the easiest way to find out what is happening locally.

This is a car-dependent metro. The LYNX Blue Line light rail, which runs from the south through South End and uptown to University City, covers only part of where the community lives. Diwali and Navratri bring big public gatherings, usually in October or November, with garba nights that can fill big halls, and Holi celebrations follow in spring. If you need a wider choice of temples and shops, Cary and Morrisville near Raleigh are roughly two and a half hours' drive away.
