Jobs in the Netherlands for Indians (2026): the kennismigrant permit, the 30% ruling, where to look, salaries and the honest odds

An Indian citizen can work in the Netherlands on a residence permit that allows it, and for most professionals that is the highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) permit: a job with one of the IND’s recognised sponsors paying at least €5,942 gross a month if you are 30 or over, €4,357 if you are under 30, or €3,122 within three years of a Dutch degree or a master’s from a top-200 university (2026 figures, excluding the 8% holiday allowance). There is no labour-market test and no degree requirement, the IND aims to decide in two weeks, your partner may take any job, and many employers add the 30% ruling, which falls to 27% from 2027 for newer arrivals. There is no general job-seeker visa, nobody may charge you for a job, and the hard part in 2026 is the employer, not the paperwork — this page covers the permits, where to look, the Dutch CV, salaries, take-home pay and the scams.

1.The honest answer first: who gets hired from India in 2026, and who does not

Correct or addContents ↑

Behind every "jobs in the Netherlands for Indians" search is one question: can I get one, and how? In 2026 the answer is yes for experienced software, data, chip-equipment and electrical or mechanical engineers whose employer is on the IND's list of recognised sponsors and will pay the published salary floor; a slower, narrower maybe for everyone whose job needs Dutch; and never through anyone who asks you for money.

The Netherlands is still the easiest country in Europe to be hired into from India once an employer says yes. The highly skilled migrant permit (kennismigrant) has no labour-market test, no degree requirement and no quota; a recognised sponsor files it, the IND aims to decide within two weeks, and the fee is €423. Indians are the largest nationality in the IND's "knowledge and talent" category, and in family reunification behind it. The catch is the employer: the 2026 floors are €5,942 gross a month at 30 or over and €4,357 under 30, holiday allowance excluded, and only an IND-recognised sponsor can file.

The market behind those rules has cooled. The IND received 19,490 knowledge-and-talent applications in 2025, against 21,730 in 2024 and 25,870 in 2023. CBS counted 408,000 unemployed (4.0%) in August 2026, slowly rising since early 2023, and 95 vacancies for every 100 unemployed in the second quarter of 2026. Only 16,300 of the 375,000 open vacancies were in information and communication, against 68,500 in care. CPB expects unemployment of 3.9% in 2026 and 4.0% in 2027. CBS also found that Indian immigration fell two years running after a 2022 peak, while those who come stay longer: 56% of the Indians who arrived in 2019 were still here four years later, against 33% of the 2011 arrivals.

What that means for you:

  • Three to ten years in software, data, cloud, embedded systems, mechatronics, optics, electrical or mechanical engineering, or finance and risk: the kennismigrant route works, and English is enough in most of these teams. Your job is to find the recognised sponsors that hire at your level and to apply the Dutch way.
  • A fresh graduate with an Indian bachelor's degree: almost no employer sponsors you from India. The doors are a Dutch master's followed by the orientation year, or a master's from a university in the top 200 of two world rankings, which opens the orientation year directly — the freshers section explains both.
  • Already with TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, Cognizant or LTIMindtree: a transfer on the intra-corporate (ICT) permit or a kennismigrant permit through the Dutch entity is the quickest way in.
  • A nurse, doctor or teacher: possible, but the registration and the Dutch language come first, and hospital pay sits below the kennismigrant floors.
  • Offered a "guaranteed Dutch job" for a fee: walk away. Dutch law forbids a recruiter to take anything from a job seeker, and a kennismigrant permit can only be filed by the employer.

This page covers finding and keeping the job. The Netherlands country guide covers what comes with it — housing, the BSN, schools, temples and the community — and the UK and Germany versions of this guide show how the same search looks across the North Sea and the eastern border.

2.Where the jobs are in 2026: chips in Eindhoven, software in Amsterdam, and the roles that want Dutch

Correct or addContents ↑

The Dutch job market for Indians is narrower than the country's vacancy count suggests: most of the 375,000 open jobs are in shops, care, construction and hospitality and ask for Dutch, while the English-speaking market is concentrated in a few clusters. Know which one you are aiming at.

Semiconductors and high-tech: Eindhoven and Veldhoven

ASML is the anchor. It booked €31.7 billion in sales and €9.6 billion profit in 2025 and employed about 44,500 people worldwide by July 2026. In January 2026 it announced 1,700 job cuts, mostly management roles in technology and IT and mostly in the Netherlands, while saying it would keep growing; in June the unions reported no forced redundancies until at least May 2027. On 8 September 2026 it broke ground on a new campus at Brainport Industries Campus North in Eindhoven with room for up to 20,000 workers — the first phase, due in 2029, for at least 3,000 people, with the first staff moving in early 2028 — backed by the government's €2.5 billion Project Beethoven for housing, roads and the power grid. Around ASML sit NXP, Philips, Signify (which announced 900 job cuts in January 2026), VDL, Prodrive, DAF and hundreds of suppliers on and around the High Tech Campus. The demand is for system, mechatronics, optics, electrical, embedded and C++ or Python software engineers, test engineers and field service engineers. The Eindhoven guide covers the city, its schools and its very large Indian community.

Software, payments and platforms: Amsterdam and Amstelveen

The capital has the English-speaking tech market: Booking.com, Adyen, Uber, the banks' technology arms, scale-ups and the European offices of US software firms, and the Indian IT majors' delivery centres around Amsterdam and Amstelveen. It is also where the cuts have been: Booking.com planned to shed more than 10% of its workforce in 2025 (it employs about 7,000 in Amsterdam), ING told the UWV it may cut up to 950 Dutch jobs by the end of 2026, partly to AI, and ABN AMRO is removing 5,200 full-time posts by 2028. Senior engineers are still hired; generalist mid-level roles draw hundreds of applicants. See the Amsterdam and Amstelveen guides for where people live.

Logistics and industry: Rotterdam

Europe's largest port employs supply-chain planners, data and software people for terminals and shipping, and engineers for the energy transition. The chemical cluster is shrinking — Dow announced 605 Dutch job cuts in June 2026. The Rotterdam guide has the neighbourhoods.

Government, law, finance and consulting: The Hague and Utrecht

The Hague has the ministries, the international courts and organisations and the legal and security firms around them; many civil-service and defence posts need Dutch nationality or fluent Dutch. Utrecht has Rabobank, insurers, the railways and consultancies, and is a short commute from Amsterdam.

The real shortages, behind a language wall

In the second quarter of 2026 CBS counted 68,500 open vacancies in care, 61,200 in business services, 29,400 in industry and 28,200 in construction. Healthcare and technical trades are genuinely short of people, but a nurse needs BIG registration and Dutch at B1 or B2, and a technician on a factory floor needs Dutch with colleagues. If you are in these fields, the language is the job.

Where it is not

  • "Nederlands vereist" — an advert in Dutch, or one that lists Dutch as a requirement, means it. Sales, customer service, HR, teaching, healthcare and most public-sector roles fall here.
  • Roles below the kennismigrant floor — junior testers, support engineers and many analyst roles pay less than €4,357 a month, so an employer cannot sponsor you for them unless the reduced graduate floor applies.
  • Agency "body-shopping" — consultancies that place kennismigrants at clients exist and are legal, but read the contract: the permit follows the employer, not the client.

3.The permits: the kennismigrant, the Blue Card, the ICT permit, the 90-day rule and the 2026 salary floors

Correct or addContents ↑

Every lawful way for an Indian citizen to work in the Netherlands is a residence permit with work rights, applied for by the employer. The floors change every 1 January; on 1 January 2026 they rose 4.46%. All are gross per month excluding the 8% holiday allowance.

How the kennismigrant permit works

Only an employer the IND has recognised as a sponsor can file it — recognition costs the employer €5,080 (€2,539 with 50 staff or fewer), and the IND publishes every recognised sponsor in a public register updated monthly. The salary must be the market rate for the job, paid monthly into a Dutch account in your name. Fixed allowances and a thirteenth month count toward the floor only if they are in the contract and paid in twelve monthly parts; holiday allowance, benefits in kind, overtime and bonuses never count. The permit runs for the length of your contract, up to five years, and after five years you can apply for permanent residence or naturalisation. If you earn less than the floor, the alternative is the ordinary single permit for employment, for which the UWV first checks whether someone from the Netherlands or the EU is available — a test most employers will not take on.

From India: the MVV, the two weeks and the first day

Indians need an entry visa (MVV), which the employer applies for together with the permit. The legal decision period is 90 days; with a complete file from a recognised sponsor the IND aims for two weeks. You then collect the MVV at the Dutch embassy or consulate you were assigned to within 90 days, with a passport valid for at least 180 more days, and travel within its validity. The MVV lets you start work the day you arrive. You collect the residence card from the IND (book within two weeks), take the TB test at the GGD within three months, and take out Dutch health insurance within four months.

The 90-day rule

More than 90 days of work in the Netherlands needs a residence permit. For a shorter assignment — 90 days or less within six months — the employer applies to the UWV for a short-stay work permit (TWV) for a knowledge worker instead, and you travel on a Schengen visa. A business visa covers meetings, interviews and conferences, not work; "come on a business visa and start" is illegal work, whatever the employer says.

The EU Blue Card

Same floor as the over-30 kennismigrant (€5,942) at any age, or €4,754 within three years of graduating, but it needs a higher-education degree and gives easier moves to other EU countries later. The IND requires recognition only for kennismigrants and researchers, so a Blue Card is the route when an employer is not a recognised sponsor — without the fast track the IND gives recognised sponsors. Most recognised employers file the kennismigrant permit.

The ICT permit

For managers and specialists transferred from an Indian company to its Dutch branch: you must have worked for the group outside the EU for at least three months, you keep your Indian contract, you are paid at least the highly skilled migrant floor for your age, and you may stay three years (trainees, who need a master's, one year). The Dutch entity need not be a recognised sponsor. To stay longer you switch to a kennismigrant permit with a Dutch contract. India and the Netherlands have a social security agreement in force, so a posted worker can stay in the Indian system for the posting on a certificate of coverage — ask HR for it before you fly.

What changed in 2026, and what has not

  • 1 January 2026: every floor rose 4.46% (the under-30 floor from €4,171 to €4,357).
  • 22 May 2026: under the revised EU Single Permit Directive (2024/1233), a permit holder who loses the job after holding the permit for two years or more gets up to six months to find a new sponsor instead of three, and a change of employer has a 45-day processing period (30 days for Blue Card holders).
  • Not yet law: in July 2025 the cabinet announced it would raise the under-30 floor to 1.1 times the average gross wage, consider 1.3 times for those over 30, tighten sponsor recognition and strip recognition from employers with no kennismigrant for two years. On 10 October 2026 the government's own law-change page still gave no start date. Apply on the current rules; an employer that hesitates because of the plan can be shown that page.

4.The 30% ruling in 2026: the salary norm, the cap, and the cut to 27% in 2027

Correct or addContents ↑

The 30% ruling (the expat scheme, 30%-regeling) is why Dutch offers to people recruited abroad look better than their gross figure: your employer may pay up to 30% of your salary as a tax-free allowance for the extra costs of living away from home, for up to five years. It is a tax arrangement between you, your employer and the Belastingdienst — separate from the IND permit — and it is worth negotiating before you sign, because the employer is not obliged to grant it and may pay less than 30%.

Who qualifies in 2026

  • You were recruited from abroad and lived more than 150 km from the Dutch border for more than 16 of the 24 months before your first working day. Anyone moving from India qualifies on distance.
  • You have specific expertise, which the law measures by salary: your annual taxable salary after the tax-free part is taken off must exceed €48,013 in 2026, or €36,497 if you are under 30 with a master's degree. Researchers and doctors in specialist training qualify regardless of salary.
  • You and your employer apply together; the Belastingdienst decides within eight weeks. File within four months of your first working day so that it applies from the start.

The trap in the salary norm

Because the norm is tested on the salary after the 30% is removed, the full 30% needs a gross salary of about €68,590 a year including holiday allowance — roughly €5,290 a month before the 8%. An over-30 kennismigrant at the €5,942 floor clears it; an under-30 at the €4,357 floor clears the lower norm only with a master's degree. Below the line, the tax-free part shrinks so that your taxable salary stays at the norm.

The cap

Since 2024 the allowance has been capped at 30% of the public-sector pay norm: in 2026 that norm is €262,000, so at most €78,600 can be paid tax-free in a full year. People who already had the ruling in the last pay period of 2022 were exempt from the cap until 1 January 2026; from this year it applies to everyone.

The cut to 27% from 2027

The law is passed and takes effect on 1 January 2027:

You started using the ruling2026From 2027
Before 1 January 202430%, old norm30% for the rest of your five years
On or after 1 January 202430%27%, and the salary norm rises to €50,436 (€38,388 under 30 with a master's), both before indexation

For an arrival in late 2026, that means a few months at 30% and the rest of the five years at 27%.

Two things that changed earlier

  • Partial non-residency is gone. The option to be treated as a non-resident for Box 2 and Box 3 — so that savings and investments in India were not taxed here — ended with the 2025 tax return; people who used the ruling before 2024 keep it until their 2026 return.
  • Previous stays are deducted. Earlier work or residence in the Netherlands in the last 25 years shortens the five years, unless it was occasional (business trips of under 20 days a year, holidays of up to six weeks a year).

Changing jobs

If you move to a new employer within three months of leaving the old one and still meet the conditions, the ruling continues for the rest of its term; the new employer applies within four months. Inside the same group it simply continues.

What to ask in the offer

Ask whether the ruling is applied, at what percentage, whether the offer is quoted before or after it (a "net-neutral" offer that converts part of your agreed gross into the allowance is common and lawful, and it can lower the base for your pension and holiday allowance — ask how they are calculated), and who files the application. The country guide explains the ruling's side effects, including the right to exchange an Indian driving licence.

5.Where to look: the sponsor register, LinkedIn, Indeed, the expat boards and recruiters who must not charge you

Correct or addContents ↑

Start with the one list that matters. The IND's public register of recognised sponsors — the "regular labour and highly skilled migrants" register — names every organisation allowed to file a kennismigrant permit, and is updated monthly. An employer that is not on it cannot sponsor you this month; one that is has already paid for recognition and almost certainly hired from abroad before. Cross-check every promising advert against it.

The job boards that work for English speakers

  • LinkedIn is where most English-language technology, finance and consulting jobs in the Netherlands are advertised and where Dutch recruiters search. Set your location to the city you are targeting and your headline to what you do, not to "seeking opportunities".
  • Indeed Netherlands has the largest volume across all sectors; filter by English-language adverts and read the language line before you apply.
  • IamExpat Jobs lists roles aimed at internationals.
  • Undutchables and Together Abroad are recruitment agencies that specialise in international and multilingual candidates.
  • Glassdoor for reviews and salary reports before an interview.
  • Werk.nl (the UWV's site) and the Nationale Vacaturebank cover the Dutch-language market; Werken voor Nederland has central-government vacancies, many of which need Dutch.
  • Company career pages: ASML, NXP, Philips, Booking.com, Adyen, ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank, TomTom and the Indian IT majors all hire directly, and their adverts say whether they relocate.

Search words that find sponsor-friendly roles: "English speaking", "relocation", "visa sponsorship", "kennismigrant" and "highly skilled migrant". In a Dutch advert, "Nederlands vereist" or "vloeiend Nederlands" ends the conversation.

Recruiters: paid by the employer, never by you

Under the Dutch law on labour intermediaries (Waadi), a recruiter or job-placement agency may not ask the job seeker for anything in return for finding work (article 3), and a staffing agency may not charge the worker it places (article 9). A genuine Dutch recruiter is paid by the employer. Anyone — in India or in the Netherlands — who asks for a "registration", "processing" or "visa" fee is either breaking Dutch law or not a recruiter.

Your network

In tech especially, many hires are referrals. The alumni networks of your college, former colleagues already in Amsterdam or Eindhoven, and the city and professional groups on Namaste Community are where "my team is hiring and we sponsor" is said first. A referral gets your CV read; it does not get the employer to pay below the floor.

What the employer is weighing

For a recognised sponsor, hiring you from India costs the €423 IND fee, a relocation package and a few weeks — cheap by European standards. What stops it is the floor (an under-30 candidate costs at least €56,500 a year with holiday allowance), the risk that you do not settle, and the Dutch candidate who can start next month. The applicants who win make those easy: a CV that already looks Dutch, a clear line on the permit ("eligible for the highly skilled migrant permit; meets the 2026 salary criterion"), availability for a video interview in Dutch working hours, and a realistic start date that allows for the IND decision, the MVV appointment and your notice period in India.

Applying from India, or from here

You can apply from India; most first interviews are by video. Being in the country helps for second rounds and for networking, but a Schengen visitor visa does not allow work, and you cannot switch from a visit to a work permit without the employer's application. The orientation year (below) is the only permit that lets a non-EU graduate look for work from inside the Netherlands.

6.The Dutch CV, the motivation letter and the interview: what to change from the Indian version

Correct or addContents ↑

A Dutch recruiter reads a CV in under a minute and is put off by exactly the things an Indian CV is built around. Change them before you send anything.

The CV

  • Two pages at most, newest job first, with three to five results-led bullets per role: "reduced test-cycle time 40% by parallelising the CI pipeline", not "responsible for testing".
  • Personal details kept short: name, city, phone, email, LinkedIn, and your work authorisation in one line. Leave out father's name, religion, caste, marital status, passport number, 10th and 12th percentages, a "career objective" and the "I hereby declare" paragraph. A photo is common on Dutch CVs but not required; date of birth and nationality are optional.
  • Languages with levels: "English C1 (IELTS 8.0), Dutch A2 (in progress)". Even beginner Dutch signals that you intend to stay.
  • Education with the level explained: "B.Tech Electrical Engineering, NIT Trichy (4-year bachelor's, first class)". If you have a Nuffic/IDW evaluation, say which Dutch level it matched.
  • The permit line: "Eligible for the Dutch highly skilled migrant permit; meets the 2026 salary criterion", or, if you are a partner of a permit holder, "Free access to the Dutch labour market — no sponsorship needed". The second sentence opens doors the first does not.

The motivation letter

The sollicitatiebrief is one page, or the body of the application email: why this company, why this role, the two things you have done that match the advert, and when you can start. Dutch readers dislike flattery and long introductions; specific beats humble. Many tech employers no longer ask for a letter at all, and some ask a few short questions instead — answer those as carefully as you would write the letter.

The interview

Dutch interviews are direct and informal in tone, and they expect you to be the same. You will be asked what you think, and disagreeing politely with the interviewer's suggestion reads as competence, not rudeness. Expect a recruiter screen, a technical round or case, a team or "culture" conversation, and sometimes a meeting with the manager's manager; three or four rounds is normal. Be on time to the minute, keep answers concrete, and ask about the team's working week — part-time and four-day weeks are common, and nobody will think less of the question.

The Dutch recruitment code (the NVP Sollicitatiecode, renewed in 2025) sets the norms most employers follow: the employer does not ask your current or previous salary, it asks your consent before calling referees, it tells you if AI is used in selection, and it should state the starting salary or scale in the advert. A bill implementing the EU pay-transparency directive, aimed at 1 January 2027 and still before parliament in September 2026, would turn the salary-history ban into law. If an employer asks for your Indian CTC anyway, answer with the range you want in euros.

References and certificates

Line up two former managers who will take a call in English; Dutch employers do check references, with your permission. Keep your relieving letters and experience certificates — they matter for the permit file, the 30% ruling and a diploma evaluation. Some sectors (education, care, finance, security) require a certificate of conduct (VOG) from Justis, which costs €41.35.

The contract

Read it before you resign in India. A probation period must be in writing and is the same for both sides: none on a contract of six months or less, at most one month on a fixed-term contract of more than six months and less than two years, at most two months on a contract of two years or more or a permanent one. The legal minimum leave is four times your weekly working days (20 days full-time), and the legal minimum holiday allowance is 8%. Check the start date (your permit must be granted before it), the salary against the floor for your age, the 30% clause, the pension scheme, the notice period, any non-compete clause, and a relocation repayment clause if you leave within a year or two.

7.Salaries by role in 2026: what software, data, engineering, nursing and finance pay

Correct or addContents ↑

Two anchors first. The Netherlands' modal income is €48,000 gross a year in 2026, holiday allowance included (CPB, August 2026), and the statutory minimum wage is €14.71 an hour from 1 January 2026 and €14.99 from 1 July 2026 for anyone 21 or over. Collectively agreed wages in the private sector rise about 4.2% in 2026. Every kennismigrant floor is well above modal: €5,942 a month is €77,008 a year with holiday allowance.

Hospital nurse, hbo level (FWG 50)€3,463–€4,914 a month, plus the sameHospitals' collective agreement, table from 1 Aug 2026

How to read that table

Levels.fyi figures are self-reported total compensation — base, bonus and shares — and lean toward large technology employers that pay in stock. A base salary at a Dutch bank, an engineering supplier or an IT-services firm will usually be lower, and offers for consultants placed at clients can sit much closer to the IND floor than to these medians. Compare offers on base salary, then add the rest. The engineering samples are small; treat them as indicative. Nurses' pay sits below the kennismigrant floors, which is why foreign nurses rarely come on that permit (see the section on nurses).

What is in a Dutch package

  • Holiday allowance (vakantiegeld): at least 8% of your salary, usually paid in May or June. The legal minimum applies only up to three times the minimum wage, so make sure the contract says 8% of your full salary — most do.
  • A thirteenth month: contractual, common in finance and IT; the hospitals' agreement has an 8.33% year-end payment instead. For the IND it counts toward the floor only if paid in twelve monthly parts.
  • Pension: most employers belong to a compulsory sector fund or run a company scheme, with contributions deducted from your gross pay before tax. The country is moving every scheme to the new pension law (Wtp): 24 funds switched on 1 January 2026, including those for healthcare (PFZW) and metal and engineering (PMT); the civil-service fund ABP plans 2027, and every scheme must switch by 1 January 2028. Under the new system each member has a clearer personal share. Ask which fund applies and what your own contribution is; it is shown on every payslip.
  • The 30% ruling, a travel allowance or NS business card, a laptop and phone, an annual training budget, hybrid working days, and relocation — flights, temporary housing for a month or two, a relocation agent. Ask for these in writing.

Negotiating

Dutch employers expect a counter-offer and respect a reasoned one. Anchor on the role and on Dutch market data, not on your Indian CTC: a 60% raise on your Bengaluru salary may still be below what a Dutch colleague earns for the same work. Ask whether the offer is quoted including or excluding holiday allowance and before or after the 30% ruling, because "€70,000" can mean three different things. If the employer is under a collective agreement (cao), the scale is fixed but your grade and step within it are negotiable — ask which grade and step you are placed in, and whether your Indian experience counts toward the step.

8.Tax and take-home pay: Box 1 in 2026, worked examples, and what your payslip deducts

Correct or addContents ↑

Salary is taxed in Box 1, and the rates include the national insurance premiums for the state pension, survivors' benefits and long-term care. For 2026, below state-pension age:

Taxable income (2026)Rate

€38,883 to €78,42637.56%
Above €78,42649.50%

Two credits then reduce the tax. The general tax credit is up to €3,115, falling from €29,736 of income to nothing at €78,426. The labour credit is up to €5,685 at around €45,600 of earned income, falling to nothing at €132,920. Your employer applies both through monthly payroll; claim them at one employer only if you have two.

Real payslips differ: the holiday allowance arrives as one lump in May or June and is taxed at a special rate, your pension contribution comes off first (and lowers the tax), and the 30% ruling is often carved out of the gross rather than added on. The table is for comparing offers, not for budgeting to the euro. A free online Dutch salary calculator gives the same order of magnitude and handles the pension.

What comes off after tax

  • Health insurance: compulsory and paid by you, not the employer — the average basic policy costs €159.30 a month in 2026, plus a €385 annual deductible before most care is reimbursed. Children under 18 are covered free.
  • Rent, the largest cost in every city — the country guide linked above has the 2026 rents and the tenant rules.
  • Municipal taxes and water-board charges, billed once a year.

Tax returns and India

The Netherlands taxes residents on their worldwide income, so interest and rent from India belong in Box 3 or Box 1 of your Dutch return, filed online with DigiD by 1 May for the year before; the first year has its own longer return because you arrived part-way through. The India–Netherlands tax treaty prevents double taxation, but the paperwork is yours. After 182 days outside India in a financial year you are generally non-resident for Indian tax, which changes what you file there. A Dutch tax adviser who handles Indian clients — the Namaste directory lists some — is worth an hour in your first spring.

The employer's cost

Your employer pays its own share of social premiums on top of your gross pay, including the income-related health-insurance levy and the unemployment and disability premiums. A Dutch gross salary therefore does not compare with an Indian CTC, which bundles those in; compare net to net, after rent.

9.Freshers, graduates, partners and nurses: the orientation year, the dependant’s right to work, and the BIG register

Correct or addContents ↑

Freshers, and why there is no job-seeker visa

The Netherlands has no general job-seeker visa. A fresh graduate with an Indian bachelor's degree cannot come to look for work, and an employer rarely sponsors one from India: the under-30 floor of €4,357 a month is above what most Dutch graduates earn. The doors that work are below.

The orientation year (zoekjaar)

The zoekjaar hoogopgeleiden gives you twelve months in the Netherlands to find a job, during which you may work in any job without a work permit. It costs €254, is granted once per qualification, and must be applied for within three years of graduating. You qualify with:

  • a bachelor's or master's from an accredited Dutch programme, a Dutch PhD, or a post-master's of at least ten months in the Netherlands; or
  • a master's, post-master's or PhD from a "designated" foreign institution — one in the top 200 of at least two ranking tables from different publishers (Times Higher Education, QS or ShanghaiRanking, general or for your subject) — plus IELTS 6.0, an equivalent test, or a degree taught in English or Dutch.

The second route can be used from India: you apply at the Dutch embassy or consulate, and the IND asks for a Nuffic credential evaluation of the degree. A bachelor's from India does not qualify on its own, and an institution's place on one list is not enough — check two publishers' tables for your subject. A job found during the year, or within three years of graduating, needs only the reduced floor of €3,122 a month, whatever your age and even if you change employer.

The bigger road is a Dutch master's: Indians were the second-largest nationality for Dutch study permits in 2025, and the reduced floor is how most of them move into ASML, the Amsterdam tech firms or a PhD.

Partners: an unrestricted right to work

If your spouse or partner holds a kennismigrant permit, an EU Blue Card or an ICT permit, you receive a dependant residence permit (€254) and need no work permit at all: the IND's rule is that family members of these permit holders do not require a permit to work. The card is endorsed with free access to the labour market — any employer, any salary, part-time or full-time. You also do not take the civic-integration exam abroad.

That makes you a much easier hire than the main applicant, so say so on the first line of your CV. Three cautions: your permit depends on your partner's, so if theirs ends, yours does; if you find a job that pays above the floor, consider having that employer file your own kennismigrant permit for independence; and start Dutch lessons in month one, because the partner market outside tech is a Dutch-speaking one.

Nurses and doctors

Healthcare is where the Netherlands is shortest of people and where the route from India is longest. Nurses, doctors, pharmacists, physiotherapists and other regulated professionals must be in the BIG register before they practise. With a diploma from outside Europe you go through the Certificate of Professional Competence procedure, which the BIG register says takes 6 to 18 months on average once the application is complete, and you must prove Dutch at the level set for your profession (B1 or B2 for nurses) and English reading skills before you apply. Then the pay: a hospital nurse earns €3,228–€4,914 a month on the 2026 scales, below both kennismigrant floors, so most foreign-trained nurses need the ordinary single permit with its labour-market test. Doctors in specialist training are an exception: the IND's floor for them is the minimum wage, provided they are BIG-registered and placed with a designated training institution.

Engineers and the Dutch titles

Engineering is not a regulated profession here, and employers rarely ask for more than your degree. If you want the Dutch title (ir. or ing.), DUO can grant it on the basis of your foreign diploma.

10.Your first weeks, and the day the job changes: BSN, DigiD, insurance, your diploma, the search period and WW

Correct or addContents ↑

The Netherlands front-loads the admin. Between landing and your second payslip, do these in order — your employer and the expat centre in your city will help with most of them.

  1. Register at the municipality within five days of moving into your home. Registration in the BRP gives you your BSN, the citizen service number every employer, bank, insurer and doctor uses. Bring your passport and a legalised (apostilled) birth certificate; the expat centres in Amsterdam, Eindhoven, The Hague, Rotterdam and Utrecht combine registration with collecting the residence card.
  2. Collect your residence card from the IND, and book the TB test at the GGD within three months — Indian nationals are not exempt.
  3. Open a Dutch bank account. The IND requires your salary to be paid into an account in your name.
  4. Apply for DigiD, the digital identity you need for the tax office, the municipality, your health insurer and the UWV.
  5. Take out health insurance within four months of arriving; it is backdated to the day you arrived, so leaving it late saves nothing.
  6. Make sure the 30% ruling application goes in within four months of your first working day.
  7. Check your first payslip: the tax credits applied at one employer only, the pension deduction, and the salary at or above your permit floor.

Your diploma: IDW and Nuffic

For most private-sector jobs nobody asks for an evaluation, but an employer may, the orientation year needs one, and it helps a partner job-hunting outside tech. IDW compares your degree with the Dutch system — Nuffic evaluates university degrees, SBB vocational ones — for €148.83 per diploma. When we checked in October 2026, IDW warned of longer waits: about six working weeks before the first check of your file, then about eight working weeks of evaluation. Upload complete, legible scans to avoid restarting the queue. Regulated professions go to their own authority instead (the BIG register for health).

Changing employer

On a kennismigrant permit you can move to any other recognised sponsor. The new employer notifies the IND within four weeks; you must meet the floor for your age at the date you start (unless the reduced graduate floor applies to you), and since 22 May 2026 the IND decides within 45 days (30 for Blue Card holders). If it does not decide in time, you may keep working for the new employer for the rest of your permit. Do not start until the new employer has filed.

Losing your job

If your contract ends, you have a search period of three months from the last day of the contract to be registered by a new recognised sponsor — six months if you have held the permit for two years or more, or if you were a victim of labour exploitation. It cannot run past your permit's end date. If no sponsor registers you in time, the IND may withdraw the permit, and your family's permits with it. Before signing a settlement agreement (vaststellingsovereenkomst), check the end date it fixes and what it does to your unemployment benefit; an employment lawyer or your union can read it in an hour.

WW unemployment benefit

If you worked at least 26 of the last 36 weeks, the UWV pays WW for 3 to 24 months depending on your work history: 75% of your WW wage for the first two months, then 70%. The wage it is based on is capped at a maximum daily wage of €309.91 from 1 July 2026, so the most WW pays is roughly €5,050 gross a month at first and €4,700 after that. WW does not extend your search period, and the IND warns that claiming benefits can affect a permit — read the IND's rules for your situation, or ask an immigration lawyer from the directory, before you apply. A plan to cut the maximum WW duration to 12 months was postponed to 2029 and then, in a letter to parliament of 29 September 2026, taken off the budget pending a deal with unions and employers; for now the 24-month maximum stands.

11.Job fraud and the paid job offer: nobody can sell you a job in the Netherlands

Correct or addContents ↑

One rule defeats almost every fraud aimed at Indians who want to work here: you never pay to be hired. A Dutch recruiter may not ask a job seeker for anything in return (Waadi, article 3); a kennismigrant permit can only be filed by a recognised sponsor, which you can check in the IND's public register; and the IND's fee is paid with the employer's application. Everything below follows from that.

  • "Guaranteed Netherlands job with visa — ₹6 to ₹15 lakh." There is no such product. An agent cannot file a kennismigrant permit, and a real employer does not need one. If the employer named in the offer is not in the IND register, the "offer" cannot become a permit.
  • "Specialist chef" and restaurant jobs. In September 2026 police arrested the two owners of a chain of Indian restaurants in the Netherlands in a Europol-supported investigation. Around 70 people had been hired from India as specialist chefs and put to work as cleaners, dishwashers and waiters, for 60 to 80 hours a week instead of the 38 their permits allowed, with overtime unpaid, fines for leaving early and threats to their families; the unpaid labour was put at about €4 million, with similar suspicions in Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and Switzerland. The special scheme for Asian chefs that this abused had been introduced in 2019 and scrapped three years later. If the job you do differs from the one on your permit, you are the one at risk — and if you are a victim of labour exploitation, the IND gives you six months to find a new employer. Report it to the Netherlands Labour Authority.
  • Recruiters on WhatsApp and Telegram. A message from a "recruiter" at a real Dutch company, offering easy remote work or a fast-track interview, followed by a request for a training fee, a background-check fee or your passport and bank details, is fraud. So is the "task" job that pays small sums for liking videos or writing reviews and then asks you to deposit money to unlock earnings.
  • Fake IND contact. The IND's emails always end in @ind.nl; it never sends WhatsApp messages, never sends a link by text to update your details, and its staff never phone to ask for a payment. Scammers spoof its number. Hang up and call the IND yourself.
  • "Pay for your work permit." The employer applies for the permit; you may reimburse nothing to an agent for it. An employer that deducts the IND fee from your salary is a warning sign — ask why.
  • The flat that comes with the job. Housing fraud is the scam most newcomers actually meet: a flat you cannot visit, a deposit by transfer, a landlord abroad. The country guide explains the tenant rules — a deposit of at most two months' rent and no agency fees for tenants.

Check an employer the way the IND does

A Chamber of Commerce (KvK) registration, a place in the IND register, a website older than the advert, named people on LinkedIn who work there, and a contract in your name stating the salary, hours, job title and workplace that match the permit. Ask the Namaste Community groups whether anyone knows the company; somebody usually does.

Where to report

The Fraudehelpdesk for scams and lost money, the police for a criminal report, the IND's fraud form for permit abuse, and the Netherlands Labour Authority for underpayment, excessive hours or exploitation. Tell the groups too, so the next person does not pay.

12.Where the community helps: groups, professional networks, temples and the festival calendar

Correct or addContents ↑

The Netherlands has one of the fastest-growing Indian communities in Europe — CBS counted about 89,000 people of Indian origin on 1 January 2024, three times the 2014 figure, concentrated in Amsterdam, Amstelveen, Eindhoven, Almere, The Hague and Utrecht — and it is the best job board you will not find on LinkedIn. People who arrived two years before you know which teams are hiring, which recruiters are real, which consultancies pay late, and which landlords take tenants without a Dutch payslip history.

Groups

Every city has WhatsApp groups, and they are fast and generous; they are also where the fake job and flat offers circulate, and the answers scroll away. The Namaste Community groups in the Netherlands are ranked by distance from you, moderated, and keep your phone number private, so the question about a sponsor, a 30% ruling clause or a notice period is answered once and stays findable. Ask with your city and your field: "data engineer in Eindhoven, under 30, any sponsors hiring?" gets better answers than "any jobs?".

Professional and alumni networks

  • The Netherlands India Chamber of Commerce & Trade (NICCT), founded in 2003, runs networking events and the Netherlands India Business Meet for Indian and Dutch firms.
  • College alumni networks — IIT, NIT, BITS, IIM and the large private universities all have members in Amsterdam and Eindhoven; your alumni office or LinkedIn finds them.
  • Language and regional associations — the Netherlands Telugu Community, the Eindhoven Marathi Mitramandal, Kallol for Bengalis, and the Tamil and Malayali groups in every city — run festivals and, informally, a great deal of job-hunting help.
  • Tech meetups in Amsterdam, Eindhoven and Delft are open to anyone; go to two a month while you search.

Temples and festivals

Temple and gurdwara programmes are where newcomers meet people who have been here for years, including the Surinamese-Hindustani community that built most of the country's mandirs. The temples and gurdwaras guide lists them by city. The festival season — Navratri and garba, Durga Puja, Diwali, Ganeshotsav and Holi — fills the Namaste events calendar; RSVP to one event in your first fortnight.

Businesses you will need

Tax advisers who know the 30% ruling, immigration lawyers, relocation agents, Indian grocers and restaurants are in the Namaste directory, with reviews from members. And if your next job is in another country, the index of guides covers Belgium, Germany, the UK and the rest; the app and the groups come with you.

The groups across the Netherlands are listed below, ranked by how active they are. If the one you need does not exist — "Indian data people in Utrecht", "ASML newcomers" — start it; it takes a minute, and the next person searching will find it.

Questions people ask

Can an Indian get a job in the Netherlands without speaking Dutch?
Yes, in software, data, semiconductor and high-tech engineering, research, finance and consulting, where most teams work in English and most kennismigrants are hired. Healthcare, teaching, the public sector, sales and customer service expect Dutch, and nurses and doctors must prove Dutch at B1 or B2 for BIG registration. Start Dutch lessons anyway: even A2 on a CV signals that you plan to stay.
What is the highly skilled migrant (kennismigrant) salary in 2026?
€5,942 gross a month if you are 30 or over and €4,357 if you are under 30, both excluding the 8% holiday allowance; €3,122 during or within three years of the orientation year, a Dutch degree or a master’s from a top-200 university. The EU Blue Card needs €5,942, or €4,754 within three years of graduating. The floors rose 4.46% on 1 January 2026 and are set again every January.
What is a recognised sponsor, and how do I check an employer?
An employer the IND has approved to file highly skilled migrant permits; recognition costs it €5,080 (€2,539 with 50 staff or fewer). Only a recognised sponsor can file a kennismigrant permit, and every one is listed in the IND’s public register of recognised sponsors, updated monthly. If the company is not in the register, it cannot sponsor you on that permit.
Is there a job seeker visa for the Netherlands for Indians?
No general one. The closest is the orientation year: twelve months to look for work, with free access to the labour market, for €254, within three years of a Dutch degree or of a master’s or PhD from a university in the top 200 of two ranking tables from different publishers (plus IELTS 6.0 or an English-taught degree). An Indian bachelor’s degree alone does not qualify.
How does the 30% ruling change in 2027?
From 1 January 2027 the tax-free allowance falls to 27% for anyone who started using the ruling on or after 1 January 2024, and the salary norm rises to €50,436 (€38,388 under 30 with a master’s), before indexation. People who started before 2024 keep 30% for the rest of their five years. In 2026 the norm is €48,013 of taxable salary and the allowance is capped at €78,600.
How much does a software engineer earn in the Netherlands, and what do I take home?
Levels.fyi’s self-reported median total compensation was €94,909 nationally and €108,349 in Amsterdam on 10 October 2026, skewed toward big-tech pay with shares; bases at banks and IT-services firms are lower. On our arithmetic from the 2026 tax tables, the over-30 floor of €5,942 a month leaves about €4,380 a month net, or about €5,350 with the 30% ruling, before pension and health insurance.
Can my spouse work in the Netherlands on a dependant permit?
Yes. Family members of a highly skilled migrant, an EU Blue Card holder or an ICT permit holder need no work permit: the dependant residence permit (€254) gives free access to the labour market, with any employer, at any salary. The permit depends on the main applicant’s, so a partner who finds a job above the floor may want their own kennismigrant permit.
What happens if I lose my job on a kennismigrant permit?
You have three months from the end of the contract to be registered by a new recognised sponsor, or six months if you have held the permit for two years or more (since 22 May 2026), never past the permit’s end date. Otherwise the IND may withdraw it, with your family’s permits. WW unemployment benefit — 75% then 70% of your WW wage for 3 to 24 months — does not extend that period.
Do I need my Indian degree evaluated to work in the Netherlands?
Usually not for the kennismigrant permit, which has no degree requirement, but an employer may ask, the orientation year needs a Nuffic evaluation, and it helps a partner job-hunting. IDW evaluates one diploma for €148.83; in October 2026 it warned of about six working weeks before the first check and eight weeks of evaluation. Nurses, doctors and other regulated professions go through the BIG register instead.
How do I recognise a fake Dutch job offer?
Any request for money is the giveaway: Dutch law forbids recruiters to charge job seekers, and only the employer can file a kennismigrant permit. Check the company in the IND register and the Chamber of Commerce, look for real employees on LinkedIn, and distrust offers by WhatsApp or Telegram. The IND emails only from @ind.nl and never phones for payment. Report fraud to the Fraudehelpdesk and the police.
