Jobs in the UK for Indians (2026): sponsorship, where to look, salaries and the honest odds

An Indian citizen can work in the UK only with a visa that allows it, and in 2026 there are four ways that work: a job offer from one of the licensed sponsors at graduate level and £41,700 a year or the going rate; a UK degree followed by the Graduate visa; a win in the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot; or a transfer from an Indian employer with a UK office. There is no job-seeker visa. The sponsors are a public list, the salary floors are published, and nobody can sell you a Certificate of Sponsorship — this page explains how each door opens, what it costs, what a British CV looks like and what you will be paid.

1.The honest answer first: who gets hired from India in 2026, and who does not

Correct or addContents ↑

The question behind every "jobs in the UK for Indians" search is simpler than the search: can I get one? The answer in 2026 is yes for an experienced professional in a field the UK is short of, usually no for a fresh graduate without a UK degree, and never through anyone who asks you for money.

The numbers set the scene. In the year to June 2026 the Home Office issued 234,841 work visas including dependants, 18% fewer than the year before. The main road, the Skilled Worker visa outside health and care, went to 26,894 main applicants — down 30% in a year — because since 22 July 2025 a sponsored job must be at graduate level (RQF 6) and pay at least £41,700 a year or the occupation's going rate, whichever is higher, and since 8 January 2026 a new applicant must prove English at B2. The Health and Care Worker route, which brought tens of thousands of Indian care workers between 2022 and 2024, is closed to new care workers from abroad; it still brings doctors, nurses and allied health professionals, and Indian nationals remain its largest group.

What this means in practice:

  • If you have five years and a specialism — software, data, cloud, cybersecurity, finance, actuarial work, engineering, pharmaceuticals, research, medicine, nursing, teaching in a shortage subject — a UK employer can sponsor you, and many do. Your task is to find the ones that already hold a licence and already pay the floor, and to apply the British way.
  • If you are a graduate with little experience, the sponsored route is mostly shut by the salary floor: £41,700 is above the national median full-time salary (£39,039 in April 2025), and the lower "new entrant" floor of £33,400 is for people under 26 or fresh from a UK course. The realistic doors are a UK master's followed by the Graduate visa, or the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot.
  • If you work for an Indian company with a UK arm — the IT majors, the banks, the pharma groups — the Senior or Specialist Worker transfer is the quickest route of all, and since 15 July 2026 the UK–India Double Contributions Convention means you keep paying into EPF rather than UK National Insurance for up to five years.
  • If an agent in India promises a "guaranteed UK job" for a fee, walk away. A UK employment agency may not charge you for finding you work, and a Certificate of Sponsorship cannot be bought.

The rest of this page takes each of those in order. The UK country guide covers everything after the offer — renting, tax, the NHS, schools, temples — and its visa section has every fee in one table.

2.The four doors: sponsorship, the Graduate visa, the Young Professionals ballot, and a transfer

Every lawful way to work in the UK as an Indian citizen comes down to one of four visas (Global Talent and the High Potential Individual visa exist for a few; the country guide covers them). Fees are GOV.UK's in October 2026; the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) is £1,035 a year for an adult, paid upfront for the whole visa.

How each one actually starts

Skilled Worker starts with the employer. It must hold a sponsor licence, assign you a Certificate of Sponsorship (CoS) for a specific job at a specific salary, and you must apply within three months of the certificate. Decisions usually come within three weeks from India. The visa is tied to that employer and that occupation code; a new job is a new CoS and a new application, though you may take up to 20 hours a week of supplementary work in another eligible job without one. Dependants can come with most Skilled Workers, but not with people sponsored into the medium-skilled Temporary Shortage List roles after 22 July 2025.

Graduate starts with a Student visa and a course that finishes: your university tells the Home Office you completed, you apply from inside the UK, and you can work in almost any job, change jobs freely and be self-employed. It does not count toward settlement and cannot be extended, so the plan is Graduate first and Skilled Worker second — the section on freshers explains how the "new entrant" salary floor makes that switch possible.

The India Young Professionals Scheme starts with a free ballot on GOV.UK, run twice a year (17–19 February and 21–23 July in 2026) for 3,000 places; a winner has 90 days to apply and can then live and work in the UK for two years in any job, including self-employment with equipment under £5,000 and no employees.

Senior or Specialist Worker starts in your current job: the UK entity of your employer sponsors the transfer. It is the route the Indian IT services companies use for most of their UK postings, and the UK–India trade agreement in force since 15 July 2026 guarantees intra-corporate transferees at least three years.

3.Where the jobs are: the five fields that sponsor, and the cities that hire

Correct or addContents ↑

Sponsorship follows shortage, and in 2026 the shortage is in five places.

Technology and consulting

The biggest employer of Indian professionals in Britain. The Indian majors — TCS, Infosys, Wipro, HCLTech, Tech Mahindra, LTIMindtree — run large UK delivery operations and are among the heaviest users of both the Skilled Worker and the Senior or Specialist Worker routes; beside them sit the banks and insurers (London, Edinburgh, Leeds, Manchester), the Big Four and the consultancies, the fintech cluster in London, and the US firms in London, Cambridge, Reading and the Thames Valley. Software engineers, data engineers, cloud and DevOps specialists, cybersecurity analysts, product managers and SAP or Salesforce consultants are hired every month; the Home Office counted 4,674 visas for IT professionals in the year to June 2026. Going rates for these occupation codes sit above the £41,700 floor in most cases — check the code on the Appendix Skilled Occupations table before you negotiate.

The NHS and health

India has long been the largest source of overseas-trained doctors and nurses in the NHS, and the Health and Care Worker visa — cheaper, free of the health surcharge for your whole family — remains open to doctors, nurses, midwives, allied health professionals and social workers. Care workers and senior care workers can no longer be recruited from abroad. The NHS section below sets out the GMC and NMC steps.

Finance and professional services

The City and Canary Wharf, Edinburgh, Leeds and Birmingham hire accountants (ICAI members have a route with ICAEW), actuaries, risk and compliance analysts, auditors and quants. Salaries clear the floor easily; competition is with UK graduates and the rest of the world.

Engineering, pharma and research

Life sciences in the Cambridge–Oxford–London triangle, pharma in Macclesfield and Stevenage, automotive and aerospace around Coventry, Derby and Bristol, civil engineering everywhere the government is building, and the universities — which sponsor postdoctoral researchers and lecturers through both Skilled Worker and Global Talent. Engineering technicians, civil engineers and quantity surveyors are on the Temporary Shortage List through 31 December 2026.

Education

Teachers of maths, physics, chemistry, computing and languages are sponsored by state and independent schools; qualified teacher status in England is applied for free through the DfE's service and India is on its eligibility list for assessment. Universities also hire from India for professional-services and research roles.

The map

London has the most jobs and the highest rents; the Thames Valley (Reading, Slough, Bracknell) has the tech parks and the largest Indian communities outside London; Manchester, Leeds and Birmingham have grown fastest for technology and finance and cost half as much to live in; Edinburgh has finance, technology and its own tax bands; Cambridge and Oxford have science. The city guides tell you what each one is like to live in, and the Skilled Worker salary floor is the same everywhere, so £41,700 in Leicester buys twice the home it buys in Hounslow.

4.Finding a sponsor: the register, the job boards, the recruiters and the employer’s side of the sum

Correct or addContents ↑

The single most useful fact for a job search from India is that the list of employers allowed to sponsor you is public. GOV.UK publishes the Register of licensed sponsors: workers — tens of thousands of organisations with the routes each is licensed for and its rating — updated regularly. Download it, filter for "Skilled Worker" and an A rating, and search for your industry and city. An employer not on it cannot sponsor you this month; one on it has already done the paperwork, paid the licence and almost certainly sponsored before.

Where to look

  • The sponsor's own careers page. Most licensed employers advertise directly. Apply there, and say in one line that you need sponsorship and meet the salary floor for the role's occupation code.
  • LinkedIn, Indeed, Reed, TotalJobs, CV-Library. The UK's volume boards. The filter words that work are "visa sponsorship", "sponsorship available" and "Skilled Worker"; an advert that says "must have the right to work in the UK" usually means no sponsorship, though it is worth one polite question.
  • NHS Jobs for every NHS trust; jobs.ac.uk for universities and research; Civil Service Jobs is open to Commonwealth citizens — Indians included — who already have the right to work, under its nationality rules, but departments rarely sponsor, so read the advert's nationality and sponsorship lines before you spend an afternoon on it.
  • Graduate schemes (banks, consultancies, engineering groups, the NHS graduate management scheme) open in September and close by December for the following autumn; each states whether it sponsors.
  • Recruiters. Hays, Michael Page, Robert Walters, Morgan McKinley and the specialist IT and finance agencies place sponsored candidates when the client will sponsor; a UK recruiter is paid by the employer, and under the Conduct of Employment Agencies Regulations may not charge you for finding you work.
  • Your network. Most sponsored hires in technology are referrals. The Indian professional associations, the alumni groups of your college, and the WhatsApp and Namaste Community groups in each UK city are where "my team is hiring a data engineer and we sponsor" is said first — the groups near each city are listed on the city guides and in the app.

What the employer is deciding

Understand the sum on the other side of the desk. For a medium or large company a sponsor licence costs £1,682 (£611 for a small company or charity), each Certificate of Sponsorship £525, and the Immigration Skills Charge — raised on 16 December 2025 — is £1,320 for the first year and £660 for each further six months (£480 and £240 for small sponsors): about £6,200 for a three-year hire before salary, and £8,800 over five. Add the going-rate floor and the compliance duties, and a hiring manager with an equally good UK candidate will take the UK candidate. You win when the skill is scarce, the salary band already clears the floor, or you cost less to sponsor — a switch straight from a Student visa is exempt from the Skills Charge (a switch from the Graduate visa is not), which is worth knowing before the interview.

Reading an advert

An honest advert names the occupation code or the salary band. If the band is below £41,700 the role is sponsorable only if a lower floor applies to you (new entrant, PhD, Immigration Salary List, Temporary Shortage List); if it says "we are unable to offer sponsorship" the answer is no and you move on. Keep a spreadsheet; sponsored searches from India take three to nine months, and the people who get there are the ones who send fifty tailored applications, not five hundred identical ones.

5.The British CV, the cover letter and the interview: what to change from the Indian version

Correct or addContents ↑

A CV written for an Indian recruiter will be filtered out by a British one for reasons that have nothing to do with your ability. Change these things before you send a single application.

The CV

  • Two pages, A4, no photo, no date of birth, no marital status, no nationality, no father's name, no 10th and 12th percentages. UK employers are not allowed to use those things and a CV that leads with them reads as foreign. Name, city (not your full address), phone with +44 or +91, email, LinkedIn.
  • A three-line profile at the top, then experience newest first with three to five bullet points each that start with a verb and end with a result — "cut deployment time 40% by moving 60 services to Kubernetes" — then education, then skills. Certifications belong in skills, not in a table of their own.
  • British English and British words. Programme, organisation, colour; "B.Tech" is fine, "B.E." needs "(engineering)"; state the Indian grade and, if the role is regulated, the UK ENIC statement of comparability.
  • Explain sponsorship in one line, on the CV or in the covering email: "I will require Skilled Worker sponsorship; I meet the B2 English requirement and the salary floor for this role." Hiding it wastes everyone's time; most application forms ask anyway.
  • References "available on request" — never the names and numbers on the CV itself.

The cover letter

Short, specific and in the body of the email or the form's box: why this company, two things you have done that match the advert's first two requirements, your notice period and when you can start. Three paragraphs. No "Respected Sir/Madam"; "Dear Hiring Manager" or the named recruiter.

The interview

British interviews are competency-based: "tell me about a time you handled a conflict in your team" wants a concrete story in the STAR shape (situation, task, action, result), not a philosophy. Technical interviews in software follow the same pattern as everywhere — a screening call, a take-home or live coding round, a system-design conversation, a culture round. Expect to be asked about right to work and sponsorship in the first ten minutes; expect salary bands to be discussed openly and early; expect a probation period of three to six months in the offer; expect a notice period of one to three months once you are through it. Be on time to the minute, be direct about what you do not know, and send a two-line thank-you email the same day.

Timing from India

Video interviews across the time zone are normal; ask for a slot before 14:00 UK time if you are in India. Once the offer is in, the Certificate of Sponsorship is assigned, you apply at the VFS centre in India with biometrics, and the three-week clock starts. Most employers will wait; a start date eight to twelve weeks after the offer is typical.

6.Salaries and the offer: the visa floors, what people actually earn, and what you take home

Correct or addContents ↑

Two numbers anchor every conversation about pay. The national median full-time salary was £39,039 in April 2025 (ONS, up 4.3% in a year) and the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour from 1 April 2026 for everyone 21 and over. A sponsored job must pay more than the first of those: the floors are below.

Floor (October 2026)AmountWho
Standard Skilled Worker£41,700 or the going rate, whichever is higherMost sponsored jobs
New entrant£33,400 or 70% of the going rateUnder 26, or on or recently on a Student or Graduate visa; at most 4 years in total including Graduate time
STEM PhD£33,400 or 80% of the going rateA relevant PhD in a STEM subject
Other PhD£37,500 or 90% of the going rateA relevant PhD
Immigration Salary List£33,400 and the full going rateThe listed shortage jobs
Temporary Shortage ListRole-specific — electricians £38,800, plumbers £38,100, IT operations technicians £35,200, data analysts £34,900Medium-skilled roles, sponsorable until 31 December 2026
Senior or Specialist Worker£52,500Intra-company transfers
Health and Care WorkerUsually £25,000+, by jobNHS and social-care professionals

What people earn

Above the floors, pay is what the market pays. NHS staff are on the Agenda for Change scale: from 1 April 2026 a newly qualified nurse or physiotherapist (Band 5) earns £32,073–£39,043, a Band 6 £39,959–£48,117, a Band 7 £49,387–£56,515, with a high-cost-area supplement in London; doctors have their own scales. For everyone else, look up the going rate for your occupation code in the Appendix Skilled Occupations table — it is the median for the job across the UK and a fair opening position — and expect London to pay 15–25% more than the rest of the country while costing more than that in rent. Compare offers on total package: base, bonus, pension contribution, private medical cover, holiday above the statutory 5.6 weeks, and whether the employer pays the visa fees and the health surcharge for you and your family (many do for senior hires; ask).

What you keep

Tax is deducted at source through PAYE. In England for 2026–27 the first £12,570 is tax-free, the basic rate is 20% to £50,270 and the higher rate 40% to £125,140; employee National Insurance is 8% between £242 and £967 a week and 2% above. On £45,000 that leaves roughly £35,900 before pension; on £60,000 roughly £45,300. Scotland has six bands and takes slightly more above £43,662. You will be auto-enrolled into a workplace pension from your first pay cycle if you are 22 or over and earn £10,000 — a minimum of 8% of qualifying earnings in total, at least 3% from the employer — and the pot stays yours if you leave the country. The country guide's work and tax section has the full tables, the forms (P45, P60) and Self Assessment deadlines for anyone with rental income in India.

Relocation

A relocation package is normal for a sponsored hire from abroad and unusual for a local one: flights, a month of temporary accommodation, shipping, sometimes the visa fees. Clawback clauses — repay the package if you leave within a year or two — are legal and common; read them. The employer must never recover the sponsor licence fee or the Immigration Skills Charge from you; both are the sponsor's cost by law.

7.Freshers and students: the route that works, and why "jobs in the UK for Indian freshers" is really a study question

Correct or addContents ↑

Nobody tells a 22-year-old in Pune the plain thing, so here it is. A fresh graduate with an Indian degree and no experience will almost never be sponsored directly from India: the standard floor is £41,700, the new entrant floor of £33,400 applies to people under 26 but still needs an employer willing to pay the licence, the certificate and the Skills Charge for somebody they have never met, and the English requirement is now B2 with an Ecctis statement for an Indian degree. It happens for exceptional candidates at the large technology and consulting firms; it is not a plan.

The route that works

  1. A UK master's, chosen for the course and the city's employers rather than the university's marketing. Indian students may work 20 hours a week in term time and full time in vacations, never self-employed. The year on campus is the year you build the network, learn the CV and interview conventions above, and do the placement or dissertation project with a company that sponsors.
  2. The Graduate visa the moment the course is complete — two years if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027, three years after a PhD. Indian nationals took 64,495 Graduate visas in the year to June 2026, more than any other nationality. You can take any job, which means a UK employer gets to see you work before deciding to sponsor.
  3. The switch to Skilled Worker from inside the UK as a new entrant: £33,400 or 70% of the going rate, for up to four years including the Graduate time. The employer pays no Immigration Skills Charge if you switch straight from your Student visa, and pays it in full if you switch from the Graduate visa — so an employer willing to sponsor you at the end of the course is worth more than one who might after two years. Ask during the placement, in writing.

The other door

The India Young Professionals Scheme is a two-year working visa for Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 with a degree-level qualification and £2,530 in savings, 3,000 places a year, allocated by a free ballot that ran on 17–19 February and 21–23 July in 2026. The visa costs £340 plus £1,552 health surcharge for the two years; there is no sponsor, no occupation code and no salary floor, and you may be self-employed. It cannot be extended and does not count toward settlement, but two years in a UK job is exactly what turns a fresher into a sponsorable professional. Enter every ballot you are eligible for.

Internships and graduate schemes

A Student visa allows a work placement that is part of the course; a Graduate visa allows internships and graduate schemes without restriction. The schemes at the banks, the consultancies, the engineering groups and the technology firms open in September for the following year and most will sponsor at the end if the scheme salary clears the new-entrant floor — ask before you apply, in writing.

8.The NHS: doctors, nurses and allied health professionals from India

Correct or addContents ↑

The NHS is the largest single employer of Indians in the UK and the one with the clearest path, because registration — not the visa — is the hard part, and the registration bodies publish every step.

Nurses and midwives

Register with the Nursing and Midwifery Council: an online eligibility self-assessment, proof of English, the Test of Competence — a computer-based test you can sit in India, then an OSCE at a UK test centre after arrival — identity and health checks, and indemnity through the employer. NHS trusts recruit internationally in cohorts and typically pay for the OSCE, the flights and the first weeks of accommodation; a newly registered nurse starts on Band 5 (£32,073–£39,043 from April 2026). The Health and Care Worker visa costs £324 for up to three years and exempts you and your family from the health surcharge. Expect a recruitment agency or the trust's own international team to handle the paperwork; the trust pays them, never you.

Doctors

Register with the General Medical Council through PLAB — or the UK Medical Licensing Assessment that is replacing it — plus the English requirement, then apply for posts on NHS Jobs. Most international medical graduates start in a trust-grade or clinical fellow post, then compete for specialty training; BAPIO, the British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin, runs mentoring for exactly this path. Doctors' pay is on its own national scale, and the London supplement applies.

Allied health and others

Physiotherapists, radiographers, occupational therapists, pharmacists, paramedics and biomedical scientists register with the Health and Care Professions Council or the General Pharmaceutical Council, and social workers with Social Work England; each publishes the international route. All are eligible for the Health and Care Worker visa.

Care workers

The Health and Care route closed to new care workers and senior care workers from abroad on 22 July 2025. Only people already sponsored in those roles before that date, and continuously on the route since, can extend. Any agency in India still advertising "UK care jobs with visa" for a fee is selling something that does not exist.

What to check in an NHS offer

The band and the pay point, the high-cost-area supplement if London, the relocation package and its clawback clause, who pays the OSCE or PLAB resit, and the rota. Then read the country guide's NHS section for what it is like on the other side of the desk.

9.Posted by an Indian employer: transfers, the UK–India trade deal and National Insurance

Correct or addContents ↑

For the tens of thousands of Indians who come to the UK each year on a client project, the visa is the Senior or Specialist Worker route (the old intra-company transfer). Your employer's UK entity sponsors you; you must have worked for the group outside the UK for at least twelve months unless the UK role pays £73,900 or more; the job must pay at least £52,500; and you can stay up to five years in any six (nine in ten if paid £73,900 or more). The fees are the Skilled Worker's, the health surcharge applies, your partner and children can come, and the time does not count toward settlement — a posted worker who decides to stay switches to Skilled Worker with a new sponsorship, and only then does the five-year clock start.

The trade deal

The UK–India Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement, signed on 24 July 2025 and in force since 15 July 2026, guarantees intra-corporate transferees at least three years, business visitors up to six months, graduate trainees up to twelve months, contractual service suppliers and independent professionals up to twelve months, and 1,800 places a year for Indian chefs, yoga teachers and classical musicians. It does not create a new visa or change the salary floors.

National Insurance: the Double Contributions Convention

In force the same day, the DCC means a worker sent temporarily to the UK by an India-based employer pays social security in one country only. If the posting is not expected to exceed 60 months you stay in the Indian system — EPF and the rest — and neither you nor your employer pays UK National Insurance for that period; you prove it with a certificate of coverage from the Indian authorities, which your employer obtains. The saving is 8% of your pay and 15% of the employer's, but it has a price: those years build no UK State Pension, and the convention does not waive the health surcharge or open UK benefits. Workers already in the UK on 15 July 2026 mid-assignment became liable to UK NI; new arrivals after that date get the exemption from the start.

If you want to stay

Tell the UK entity early. The switch to Skilled Worker is a new application from inside the UK (£943 or £1,865), the same salary floor and B2 English, and the Skills Charge applies again to the new sponsorship. Many postings end with exactly this conversation, and the employers that bring people over expect it.

10.Before your first day: right to work, the NI number, the bank account and the contract

Correct or addContents ↑

Between the visa decision and the first payslip there are five things, and the order matters.

  1. The right-to-work check. Your employer must check your right to work before your first day, with a share code from your UKVI account (valid 90 days) or through the Home Office's Employer Checking Service. Generate the code the day your eVisa is granted and make sure the passport you travel on is the one linked to the account. The penalty for an employer who skips the check is up to £60,000 per worker, so nobody will.
  2. The National Insurance number. If your eVisa shows one, you have one. If not, apply online on GOV.UK once you are in the UK with the right to work. It is free and takes a few weeks, and you can start work and be paid before it arrives; the employer uses an emergency tax code until it comes through, and the overpaid tax comes back. Anyone offering an NI number for a fee is a fraud.
  3. A UK bank account for your salary. The digital banks open one in a day with your passport; the high-street banks run "new to the UK" accounts and some, like HSBC, can open one before you leave India. The arrival checklist in the country guide lists what each accepts as proof of address.
  4. The starter checklist and your tax code. With no P45 from a UK job you complete HMRC's starter checklist on day one; your first payslip shows the tax code, income tax, National Insurance and the pension deduction. Check it against the tables in the salaries section — a wrong code is common in month one and fixed by HMRC with a phone call or in the app.
  5. The contract. A written statement of employment particulars is yours from day one by law: pay, hours, holiday (the statutory minimum is 5.6 weeks a year, which can include the eight bank holidays), sick pay, notice, probation, the pension and any clawback on relocation money. Read the clauses on notice and on restrictive covenants, and ask about hybrid working before you choose where to live.

Two things specific to sponsored workers

Your sponsor must report to the Home Office if you do not turn up, if your salary changes, if your job changes occupation code or if you leave; keep your own copy of every CoS and payslip, because the sponsor's records are also your evidence at settlement. And a sponsored worker on a Skilled Worker visa may take up to 20 hours a week of supplementary work in another eligible job without a new visa, and unlimited overtime with the sponsor — but no self-employment and no cash-in-hand shift, which would break your conditions and the employer's licence at the same time.

11.Scams and false promises: nobody can sell you a job in the UK

Correct or addContents ↑

The UK job market has one rule that defeats almost every fraud aimed at Indians: you never pay to be hired. A UK employment agency may not charge a work-seeker for finding them work (the Conduct of Employment Agencies and Employment Businesses Regulations 2003; the only exceptions are modelling and entertainment), and a Certificate of Sponsorship is assigned by an employer for a real job, not sold. Everything below follows from that.

  • "Guaranteed UK job with visa — ₹8 lakh." The commonest fraud in the Indian market. Sometimes nothing arrives; sometimes a real-looking CoS for a job that does not exist, which the Home Office refuses at the visa stage, or discovers later and revokes the sponsor's licence — leaving the worker to find a new sponsor within the 60-day grace period. The Home Office's fraud page says it plainly: no genuine employer asks the worker for money.
  • "UK care jobs with sponsorship." Closed to new overseas applicants since 22 July 2025. Any advert still selling it is selling nothing.
  • The Home Office phone call. A caller with a spoofed official number says there is a "problem with your visa" and demands a payment to avoid deportation. The Home Office never asks for money by phone; hang up and report it to Action Fraud.
  • Fake recruiters on LinkedIn and WhatsApp who ask for a "processing fee", your passport scan and bank details before any interview. Real recruiters are paid by the employer and ask for your CV.
  • Unlicensed immigration advice. Only advisers registered with the Immigration Advice Authority, or solicitors and barristers regulated by their own bodies, may give immigration advice in the UK; check the IAA register before paying a consultant, in India or in Britain.
  • The job that is not what the CoS says. If the role, the hours or the pay on arrival differ from the certificate, you are the one whose visa is at risk. Keep the offer letter and the CoS, and if it happens, take advice from the IAA-registered adviser or the union before you resign.

The country guide's scams section covers the rental, bank and NI-number frauds that follow once you have landed. Report any of them to Action Fraud, and tell the groups in the app so the next person does not pay.

12.After the offer: changing jobs, losing a sponsor, settlement and the consultation that may change it

Correct or addContents ↑

A Skilled Worker visa is tied to one employer and one occupation code, so the rules for the years after the first offer are worth knowing before you sign.

Changing jobs

A new employer means a new Certificate of Sponsorship and a new application from inside the UK (£943 for up to three years, £1,865 for longer, plus the health surcharge for the new period) — and the new employer pays the Skills Charge again. The time already spent counts toward the five years; a gap between jobs does not break continuity so long as you apply before the old permission ends. A promotion with the same employer in the same occupation code needs no new application; a move to a different code does.

Losing a sponsor

If your employer's licence is revoked, or it makes you redundant, the Home Office shortens your permission and you get 60 days to find a new sponsor and apply, or leave. Keep the register of sponsors bookmarked and your CV current; the people who survive a revocation are the ones who already knew three other sponsors in their field.

Settlement

After five years as a Skilled Worker you can apply for indefinite leave to remain: £3,226, the Life in the UK test (£50) and English at B1 today, continuous residence with no more than 180 days outside the UK in any twelve months, and a sponsor who still needs you at the salary floor on the day you apply. Time on a Student, Graduate or Senior or Specialist Worker visa does not count. Twelve months after ILR comes citizenship — and India does not allow dual nationality, so a British passport means surrendering the Indian one and taking the OCI card.

Moving on

If the UK does not work out, the skills you have added — a British employer on the CV, B2 English proven, a pension pot that stays invested — travel well. The guides to the Netherlands, Belgium and Luxembourg show what the same search looks like across the Channel, and the Namaste Community app works in every country, so the groups and the directory come with you.

Questions people ask

Can an Indian get a job in the UK without a UK degree?
Yes, with experience: a licensed sponsor can hire you from India for a graduate-level job paying £41,700 a year or the occupation’s going rate, with English at B2. Without experience it is rare, because the employer pays a licence, a £525 certificate and the Immigration Skills Charge to hire someone it has not met; the realistic routes for a fresher are a UK master’s followed by the Graduate visa, or the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot.
What is the minimum salary for UK visa sponsorship in 2026?
£41,700 a year or the going rate for the occupation, whichever is higher, for a job at graduate level (RQF 6). Lower floors exist: £33,400 (or 70% of the going rate) for new entrants under 26 or fresh from a UK Student or Graduate visa, £33,400 (80%) for STEM PhD holders and £37,500 (90%) for other PhDs, £33,400 with the full going rate for Immigration Salary List jobs, and role-specific floors on the Temporary Shortage List until 31 December 2026. Intra-company transfers need £52,500.
Which UK companies sponsor Indian workers?
Any employer on GOV.UK’s public Register of licensed sponsors: workers — the Indian IT majors, the banks and consultancies, NHS trusts, universities, engineering and pharma groups, and thousands of smaller firms. Download the register, filter for the Skilled Worker route and an A rating, and search by sector and city; an employer not on it cannot sponsor you.
How much does it cost an employer to sponsor me?
A sponsor licence is £1,682 for a medium or large organisation (£611 for a small one or a charity), each Certificate of Sponsorship £525, and the Immigration Skills Charge £1,320 for the first year and £660 for each further six months (£480 and £240 for small sponsors) since 16 December 2025 — around £6,200 for a three-year hire before salary. A switch straight from a Student visa is exempt from the Skills Charge; a switch from the Graduate visa is not. None of it may be recovered from you.
Are there jobs in the UK for Indian freshers?
Directly from India, very few: the sponsorship floors are above the UK median salary and employers rarely sponsor someone with no experience. The route that works is a UK master’s, then the Graduate visa (two years if you apply by 31 December 2026, 18 months from 1 January 2027), then a switch to Skilled Worker as a new entrant at £33,400 or 70% of the going rate — or a win in the India Young Professionals Scheme ballot, which gives two years of work with no sponsor.
Is the India Young Professionals Scheme still open in 2026?
Yes. 3,000 places a year for Indian citizens aged 18 to 30 with a degree-level qualification and £2,530 in savings, allocated by a free ballot on GOV.UK — the 2026 rounds were 17–19 February and 21–23 July. A winner has 90 days to apply; the visa costs £340 plus £1,552 health surcharge and lasts 24 months with no extension.
Do I pay National Insurance if my Indian company posts me to the UK?
Not for postings that start on or after 15 July 2026 and are not expected to exceed 60 months: under the UK–India Double Contributions Convention you stay in the Indian system (EPF) and neither you nor your employer pays UK National Insurance, proven by a certificate of coverage. Those years build no UK State Pension, and the health surcharge still applies.
How long does a UK Skilled Worker visa take from India?
Usually three weeks from the biometrics appointment at a VFS centre in India, once the employer has assigned the Certificate of Sponsorship; you must apply within three months of the certificate. Switching from inside the UK usually takes eight weeks. Priority services are available for a fee where offered.
Can I change jobs on a Skilled Worker visa?
Yes, but a new employer means a new Certificate of Sponsorship and a new application from inside the UK before your current permission ends; the time already spent counts toward settlement. If your sponsor loses its licence or makes you redundant you get 60 days to find a new sponsor. You may also take up to 20 hours a week of supplementary work in another eligible job without a new visa.
