Jobs in Sweden for Indians (2026): the 90% salary rule, the Blue Card, where the jobs are and the honest odds
An Indian citizen needs a Swedish work permit granted before travelling, and since 1 June 2026 the deciding number is the salary: at least 90% of the median, which is SEK 34,470 a month after SCB’s update on 16 June (median SEK 38,300), while the EU Blue Card needs SEK 53,625. There is no points system, sponsor licence or lottery — an employer signs a contract and opens the application — and Indians were the largest group in 2025, with 2,633 first-time work permits, mostly in jobs that need a degree. For highly qualified jobs the Migration Agency pledges a decision within 30 days of a complete application; other jobs take about four months. The market is softer than the permit numbers suggest (unemployment 8.1% in September 2026, up to 1,600 Ericsson jobs at risk), most jobs outside tech need Swedish, and nobody can sell you a permit.
1.The honest answer first: who gets hired from India in 2026, and who does not
Correct or addContents ↑The question behind every "jobs in Sweden for Indians" search is whether you can be hired from India at all. In 2026 the answer is yes for an experienced software developer, engineer or technician whose employer will sign a contract above the salary floor and wait between one and four months for the Swedish Migration Agency (Migrationsverket); a slow maybe for a fresh graduate; a hard road for most work in cleaning, restaurants, shops or care, where Swedish is needed and the floor bites; and never through anyone who asks you for money.
The numbers first. Migrationsverket's article of 19 October 2026 says about 11,000 employees were granted a work permit for the first time in 2025, and the largest nationality was India with 2,633, ahead of Thailand (1,974), Türkiye (764), China (679) and the United Kingdom (457). The Agency says the Indians mainly work in occupations that need a degree, and the largest occupational group among all first-time permits was IT architects, systems developers and test managers (2,182), followed by engineers and technicians (1,147) and engineering professionals (1,068). Behind those permits is a community of 61,298 India-born people at the end of 2025, according to Statistics Sweden (SCB), up from 59,290 a year earlier. India's Ministry of External Affairs counts overseas Indians differently and gives 91,600 for Sweden in January 2026 (67,600 NRIs and 24,000 persons of Indian origin).
The market they arrive into is softer than those numbers suggest. First-time applications fell from about 24,000 in 2023 to just over 16,000 in 2025, which the Agency links to the tightening described below. SCB's Labour Force Survey for September 2026 put unemployment at 8.1% (466,000 people; 8.7% seasonally adjusted and smoothed). Ericsson said on 15 January 2026 that up to 1,600 jobs in Sweden could be affected, and Volvo Cars said at the end of August 2026 that it will close its Stockholm office, where 450 people work, on 1 March 2027.
What that means for you:
- If you have three or more years in software, data, cloud, embedded, telecom, or mechanical or electrical engineering, Sweden has a legal door that depends on no lottery and no employer licence: a work permit at a salary of at least SEK 34,470 a month, or an EU Blue Card at SEK 53,625. SCB's 2025 figures put the 10th percentile of software developer pay at SEK 39,600, so the floor itself is rarely the obstacle; finding the employer is.
- If you are a fresh graduate with an Indian degree and no experience, few employers will apply for a permit for someone they have never met. The route that works is a Swedish master's degree, a permit to look for work afterwards and then a work permit from inside Sweden — see the section on freshers.
- If the job needs Swedish — most work in health, education, retail, hospitality and the public sector — the Public Employment Service says you will find it difficult to get a job without at least basic Swedish and that most jobs require fluency, with exceptions in higher technical professions where English is often the working language.
- If an agent promises a guaranteed Swedish job, permit or "visa appointment" for a fee, walk away: the Embassy of Sweden in New Delhi says no seller can influence the processing time or the decision, and payments go only to the Agency or the Embassy.
The Indians in Sweden page has the events, groups and Indian businesses for the community you arrive into, and the Germany guide shows how the same search looks in a country with a points-based job-seeker card, which Sweden does not have.
2.The legal doors: the work permit, the EU Blue Card, the ICT permit and the permit to look for work
Correct or addContents ↑Sweden has no quota, no points system and no sponsor licence. The employer signs an employment contract with you and starts the application in Migrationsverket's e-service; the relevant trade union is given the chance to comment on your terms; you then complete your part, pay the fee and present your passport; and the Agency decides. A first application is made from outside Sweden, and the main rule is that the permit is granted before you travel. The fees and times below are the ones printed on the Agency's pages on 23 October 2026.
| Door | Who it fits | The condition (2026) | Fee | How long it takes | Length and what it leads to |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Work permit | Anyone with a job offer | Salary of at least 90% of the median: SEK 34,470 a month; collective-agreement terms; four insurances | SEK 2,200 | Highly qualified jobs, complete: 75% decided within 1 month; other jobs: 4 months (9 if incomplete) | Up to 2 years; permanent residence after 4 years in the last 7 |
| EU Blue Card | Degree of 180 credits, or 5 years' experience, in a highly qualified job | Contract of at least 6 months at SEK 53,625 a month or more | SEK 2,000 | Averages of 10 to 15 days, January to May 2026 | 9 months to 4 years; permanent residence after 36 months |
| ICT permit | Managers, specialists and trainees moved within a company group | 3 months' uninterrupted employment with the group; at least the collective-agreement minimum | SEK 2,000 | 75% within 1 month if complete | Up to 3 years (1 for trainees); then leave the EU/EEA and apply again |
| Permit to look for work | Holders of a master's or higher | Second-cycle degree; SEK 13,000 a month in the bank; health insurance; apply from outside Sweden | SEK 2,200 | 75% within 5 months if complete | Up to 9 months; then a work permit from inside Sweden |
| Permit after Swedish studies | Graduates of a Swedish university programme | Whole programme completed; apply before the student permit expires; SEK 10,656 a month in 2026 | SEK 1,500 | — | Up to 1 year (12 to 18 months after a doctorate) |
The work permit
This is the door most Indians use. The Agency's conditions: a contract signed by both sides; pay and conditions at least on a par with Swedish collective agreements or common practice in the occupation; health, life, industrial-injury and occupational-pension insurance taken out by the employer by your start date; comprehensive health insurance if the job lasts a year or less; and, since 1 June 2026, the salary floor explained in the next section. You cannot combine two jobs to reach it. The permit lasts up to two years, never longer than the contract or the passport, and is limited to the occupation and often the employer. Employers in cleaning, hotels and restaurants, construction, trade, agriculture and forestry, car workshops, services and staffing must also show they can pay your salary for at least three months, and the Agency's 30-day pledge does not cover those industries.
The EU Blue Card
The Blue Card is for "highly qualified employment": a degree worth at least 180 higher education credits, or at least five years of relevant professional experience, plus a contract of at least six months. The threshold is 1.25 times the average gross salary published by the National Mediation Office, and it has been SEK 53,625 a month since 15 July 2026 — about 1.4 times the median, and almost exactly SCB's 2025 median for software and system developers (SEK 53,500). It is valid from nine months to four years (the maximum was two years until 1 June 2026), and a holder can ask for permanent residence after 36 months. A Blue Card held in another EU country for 12 months can be turned into a Swedish one if you apply within a month of arriving.
The ICT permit
The Indian IT services companies' route for client projects: you must already work for the group outside the EU/EEA, have been employed for at least three months without a break, and be moved to its Swedish subsidiary as a manager, specialist or trainee. The maximum is three years for managers and specialists and one year for trainees; at the limit you must leave the EU/EEA before applying again. Since 1 June 2026 the pay must be at least the collective-agreement minimum for full-time work.
The permit to look for work
Sweden's answer to "I have the skills but no offer" is narrow. It exists only for people with a second-cycle degree (a 60- or 120-credit master's, a professional degree of 60 to 330 credits, or a doctorate), who must show SEK 13,000 a month for every month they ask for — SEK 117,000 for the full nine — plus the cost of the journey home, and comprehensive health insurance. It does not let you work: if you find a job you apply for a work permit from inside Sweden, and the Agency lets you start with that employer once the application is in.
The certified-employer fast track is gone
Until the end of 2023, "certified" employers got a work permit decision in about ten working days for a first application and twenty for an extension. The Agency closed the scheme on 15 December 2023 (the last day to apply as a certified employer was 14 December) because it had grown to cover many applications that did not fit its mission of promoting highly qualified labour. On 29 January 2024 it was replaced by a sorting model: complete applications for highly qualified occupations (Swedish occupation codes 1 to 3, plus Blue Cards, ICT permits and researchers) carry a pledge of a decision within 30 days, and in 2026 more than 80% of those cases were decided in that time. Monthly averages for highly qualified work permits were 24, 20, 18, 21 and 23 days from January to May 2026; for Blue Cards 14, 12, 10, 10 and 15; for ICT permits 26, 26, 22, 26 and 27. Everything else is legally due within four months of a complete application, and in 2026 three in four work-permit cases were decided within 120 days. Start-ups less than a year old can get the Agency's employer support but not the 30-day pledge.
3.The salary rule: 90% of the median, SEK 34,470, and who is exempt
Correct or addContents ↑The single most important change for 2026 is the salary requirement. It is not the 80% rule that many guides still quote, and it is not the full median: from 1 June 2026 a work permit requires a monthly salary of at least 90 per cent of the median salary in Sweden at the time of application, and the pay must still be on a par with collective agreements or common practice in your occupation. The Agency says it replaces the old requirement of "a good living". SCB publishes the median every June; on 16 June 2026 it became SEK 38,300, so the floor is SEK 34,470 a month. SCB's own 2025 table agrees: the median for all occupations was SEK 38,300, the average SEK 42,900, the 10th percentile SEK 28,000 and the 90th SEK 61,700.
| Applications submitted | Median | 90% (work permit) | 75% (exempt groups) |
|---|---|---|---|
| From 16 June 2026 | SEK 38,300 | SEK 34,470 | SEK 28,725 |
| 17 June 2025 – 15 June 2026 | SEK 37,100 | SEK 33,390 | SEK 27,825 |
| 18 June 2024 – 16 June 2025 | SEK 35,600 | SEK 32,040 | SEK 26,700 |
| 20 June 2023 – 17 June 2024 | SEK 34,200 | SEK 30,780 | SEK 25,650 |
The median that counts is the one current on the day you apply. The quirk is timing: a first-time applicant is judged on the rules in force when the decision is made, so an application filed in May that is decided on or after 1 June is tested against the 90% rule, using the median current at filing.
Who it applies to
First-time applicants who receive a decision on or after 1 June 2026, even if they applied earlier, and extension applicants whose current permit was decided after that date. For people holding a permit granted under the old rules there is a transition: an extension applied for between 1 June and 1 December 2026 is judged on the old requirement, a monthly salary of at least 80% of the median (SEK 29,680 on the Agency's notice of 17 April 2026; on the June median our arithmetic gives SEK 30,640, a figure the Agency does not print). From 2 December 2026 every extension is subject to the 90% test, so if your permit will be extended after that date, check your salary against SEK 34,470 now.
Who is exempt (75%, SEK 28,725)
The Government's list in the Aliens Ordinance puts 27 occupational subgroups on a 75% floor, for the duration of the permit; at an extension the occupation must still be on the list. The ones that matter most to Indians are in technology: IT operations technicians (3511), IT support technicians (3512), systems administrators (3513) and network and systems technicians (3514). The rest are chemical engineering technicians and laboratory engineers, assistant nurses and care assistants in several settings, farm animal workers and crop growers, forestry workers and machine drivers, welders, steel erectors, maintenance mechanics, electrical distribution technicians, butchers, food and fish processing operators, process monitoring operators and berry pickers other than forest pickers. Four groups are also on the 75% floor: people who hold a Swedish student or researcher permit when they first apply for a work permit, and people with temporary protection (both for two years); doctors, dentists and nurses with foreign qualifications who are in the process of getting Swedish certification; and employees of technology or life-science companies less than five years old with fewer than 100 employees. Two occupations are closed altogether: since 1 June 2026 no work permit can be granted for personal assistants or forest berry pickers, whatever the salary.
The Blue Card and the ICT permit are separate
The Blue Card has its own, higher threshold (SEK 53,625). For ICT permits and seasonal work the rule since 1 June 2026 is the collective-agreement minimum for full-time work.
What this means in practice
For a software developer the floor sits below the 10th percentile of pay. For an IT support technician (SCB median SEK 38,500 in 2025) or a systems administrator (median SEK 45,800) the 75% floor gives some room. For a cook or a cleaner on collective-agreement pay the floor can be where the application fails, which fits the Agency's report that applications fell furthest in restaurants, cleaning and construction. Ask your employer to state the gross monthly salary in the contract, because that is the number the Agency compares with the floor.
What comes next
The percentage is fixed at 90%; what moves is the median, which SCB republishes each June, so the floor for 2027 will be known in mid-June 2027 — re-check it then. The Agency's pages announce no further increase in the percentage, but the Government can still change the occupation lists and decide to stop permits for named occupational groups, so read the Agency's page on the day you apply.
4.The 2025–26 tightening, dated: track change, the salary floor, good conduct, family income and citizenship
Correct or addContents ↑Sweden has tightened labour migration in steps, and some of the advice still online is out of date. This is the order in which each change took effect, as stated on the Agency's own pages.
- 1 April 2025 — the end of "track change" (spårbyte). Until then a person whose asylum claim had been rejected could switch to a work permit without leaving Sweden. The Local reported that Parliament voted to end it on 12 March 2025 without transition rules and that the Agency estimated about 4,700 people, including family members, were affected. It does not touch an Indian applying from India; the Agency lists it, with the gradually raised salary requirement, among the likely reasons applications have fallen.
- 1 June 2026 — the new work permit rules. The 90% salary floor; comprehensive health insurance for stays of up to a year; the power to refuse an application because of defects at the employer, such as certain crimes or sanctions; two new criminal offences, exploitation of foreign workers and trading in work permits; the end of permits for personal assistants and forest berry pickers; the four-year maximum for Blue Cards; the collective-agreement minimum for ICT permits and seasonal work.
- 6 June 2026 — the citizenship rules. Eight years of residence instead of five, a new income test, and a Swedish and civics requirement (see the citizenship section).
- 11 June 2026 — permanent residence for researchers. Three consecutive years instead of four for researchers and doctoral students. The ordinary rule of four years in the last seven continues for work permits.
- 16 June 2026 — the new median, SEK 38,300, and so SEK 34,470 for the floor.
- 13 July 2026 — good conduct (vandel). For every residence permit, work permits included, the Agency now also asks whether you are law-abiding and honest: that you follow the rules, support yourself honestly and pose no threat to public order, that you have paid your debts and given accurate information to social insurance and benefit authorities, and that nothing points to contact with criminal, terrorist or extremist networks. Isolated, minor incidents will normally not be a ground for refusal.
- 15 July 2026 — the Blue Card threshold, SEK 53,625.
- 1 October 2026 — family income. The maintenance requirement for family members is now examined when a permit is extended, not only on the first application, and a family member's income may count, with limits.
- 2 December 2026 — the 90% floor for every extension.
The "maintenance requirement" in plain words
In the Agency's language, maintenance (försörjning) means you can pay for your life without benefits. For the work permit itself it was replaced on 1 June 2026 by the salary test. For family members and for permanent residence it remains: your income after tax must cover your housing cost and leave a fixed amount for food, clothes and other costs — SEK 6,243 a month for a single adult in the Agency's 2026 figures — and only legal, taxed income counts. Details are in the family and permanent-residence sections.
What did not change
The core of the system is intact: any employer can hire you; there is no cap; a first permit is up to two years; the rule for permanent residence is four years of work in the last seven (36 months on a Blue Card). The Agency's article of 19 October 2026 also says it has been working, on the Government's instructions, to make it easier for highly qualified workers to come, and that first-time applications for highly qualified occupations fell by only six per cent between 2024 and 2025, while the fall was greatest in sectors needing more investigation, such as restaurants, cleaning and construction.
5.Where the jobs are: technology, engineering, the Indian IT companies and the regions
Correct or addContents ↑The Agency does not publish permit counts by employer, but its October 2026 article names the kinds of companies behind the 2025 permits: IT consultancies such as Tata Consultancy Services and Capgemini, power and energy infrastructure companies such as Hitachi Energy and Elnos Nordic, vehicle makers such as Volvo and Scania, and companies building the new steel plant in Boden, including Stegra. By county, Stockholm had the most registered holders of temporary work permits, followed by Västra Götaland (Gothenburg) and Skåne (Malmö and Lund); Norrbotten, Västmanland and Dalarna were also in the top six, because one or two employers there recruit abroad.
Technology
IT is where Indians are hired: systems developers and IT architects were the largest occupational group in 2025. Stockholm is the base of Ericsson, Spotify, Klarna and King, and of the Swedish head offices of TCS and HCLTech. Treat the headline names carefully. Ericsson said in January 2026 that up to 1,600 Swedish jobs could be affected and opened talks with the unions; Klarna said in 2025 that it had stopped hiring outside engineering as AI took on work. SCB's 2025 pay data show the other side: software and system developers earned a median SEK 53,500 and system analysts and IT architects SEK 56,200, so the salaries clear every permit floor. Pay is not the problem for an experienced developer; whether an employer has a vacancy is.
The Indian IT services companies
They are a common route for Indian engineers, through the ICT permit or a work permit with a Swedish subsidiary, and the Agency names TCS as a large source of 2025 permits. Each company's own pages, with dates:
- TCS has been in Sweden since the early 1990s. Business Sweden's profile of 15 April 2024 said it was helping more than 30 of Sweden's most valued enterprises, ran an innovation hub at Epicenter in Stockholm, and had more than 20,000 consultants serving clients across the Nordic region (not Sweden alone).
- HCLTech says it has been in Sweden since 2008, with its head office in Stockholm and offices or delivery centres in Gothenburg, Helsingborg, Eskilstuna, Malmö and Skövde; its pages list Ericsson and Volvo Cars among its clients, the latter through a Gothenburg centre of excellence.
- Infosys announced a proximity centre in Gothenburg on 5 December 2022 and, in 2025, two new offices in Älmhult and Helsingborg; Business Sweden said in 2024 that Infosys and Wipro had both invested heavily in Swedish competency centres.
- Wipro says it has 3,500-plus consultants serving Nordic clients, a third of them local, through multiple offices in the region; its Nordic page does not name its Swedish cities.
- Tech Mahindra names a Head of Sweden in its Nordic leadership team (article of 2 November 2021).
I could not read a Swedish source in October 2026 that confirms LTIMindtree's Swedish offices, so this guide does not list them. None of these companies publishes how many Indians it employs in Sweden.
Engineering and industry
Engineers and technicians (1,147) and engineering professionals (1,068) are the second and third largest permit groups. SCB's 2025 medians are SEK 54,200 for electrical, electronics and telecommunications engineers and SEK 51,800 for mechanical engineers. The buyers are vehicle makers such as Volvo and Scania, power and automation companies, telecoms and the northern steel project. Volvo Cars, headquartered in Gothenburg, announced about 3,000 job cuts in May 2025 and the closure of its Stockholm office in August 2026, so ask whether a vacancy is a new position or a replacement.
Research and science
MAX IV, the national X-ray laboratory hosted by Lund University, was inaugurated on 21 June 2016, and the European Spallation Source in Lund recruits worldwide and describes itself in 2026 as still preparing for first science. Universities advertise research posts on EURAXESS and their own sites; researchers have their own permit and, since 11 June 2026, a faster route to permanent residence.
The regions
Stockholm has the largest market and the highest rents. Gothenburg has the vehicle industry and the centres of HCLTech and Infosys. Skåne has Lund's research and the Öresund link to Copenhagen. The north has large industrial projects, with the risk that one employer's problems become yours: the Northvolt case in the section on changing jobs shows what the Agency did. The Indian events calendar for Sweden shows where the community meets, and it is one of the faster ways to hear which team is hiring.
6.Finding an employer: Platsbanken, the regional portals, LinkedIn and what the employer is weighing
Correct or addContents ↑Sweden has no public register of sponsors, because there is no sponsor licence: any registered Swedish employer can hire you if you and the job fit one of the permits. The search is for an employer that recruits from outside the EU, writes its adverts in English and has done the paperwork before.
Where to look
- Platsbanken, the job bank of the Swedish Public Employment Service (Arbetsförmedlingen), which describes itself as Sweden's largest and most visited employment site. It is mostly in Swedish; the Service's English pages explain how to use it.
- Regional career portals that sweden.se lists: Work in Skåne for the south and Move to Gothenburg and West Sweden for the west coast.
- The EURES portal shows the same vacancies, but it is aimed at EU/EEA and Swiss jobseekers.
- Company career pages and LinkedIn. Most technology employers publish in English, and sweden.se's Work in Sweden programme lists hiring employers on LinkedIn. On 23 October 2026 its page listed an online "India-Nordic Talent Bridge" session (16 October) and a stand at the Bengaluru Tech Summit (17 to 19 November), so the national campaign is aimed at Indian professionals.
- Universities and institutes for research posts, through EURAXESS and their own sites.
- Your network. Referrals fill a large share of technology roles; college alumni groups, the Indian employee networks inside the multinationals and the Namaste community in Sweden are where "my team is hiring" is said first.
What the employer is weighing
A Swedish employer needs no sponsor licence, but it takes on a process: it starts your application, sends the terms to the trade union, takes out four insurances, and waits one month for a highly qualified job and up to four for others. Migrationsverket's page for people changing employer says the position must have been advertised in Sweden and across the EU/EEA and Switzerland before you start. Against that stands a candidate who can start on Monday. You win when the skill is scarce, when the employer already hires from outside the EU, or when you need no new permit at all — a spouse of a permit holder, someone with permanent residence.
Who pays the fee
The application fee (SEK 2,200 for a work permit, SEK 2,000 for a Blue Card or ICT permit) is paid in the e-service when the employee submits their part. The Agency says that if the company or an agent pays for you, you should ask for an invoice and pay only to an account belonging to the company or agent, never a private account, and keep the receipt. Ask in writing who pays the fee, your family's fees and the flight, and whether any of it is repayable if you leave within a year.
Reading an advert
A job advertised below SEK 34,470 a month cannot support a standard work permit unless the occupation is on the 75% list or you hold a Swedish student permit. An advert that says "Swedish required" means it. Only highly qualified occupations get the 30-day pledge. Ask early and in writing: "Do you hire from outside the EU, and which permit do you expect to use?" The answer saves three interview rounds.
Timing from India
For a highly qualified job with a complete file the Agency pledges a decision within 30 days, and the passport check, biometrics and card collection come on top; for other jobs allow four months or more. Keep a spreadsheet; people who succeed send fifty tailored applications, not five hundred identical ones.
7.The Swedish CV, the contract and the interview: what to change and what to ask
Correct or addContents ↑A CV that works in Bengaluru is often filtered out in Stockholm for form, not ability. Keep it short and concrete.
The CV
- Two pages at most, newest job first, with a three-line profile and bullet points that end in a result you can check: "cut build times from 40 to 12 minutes across 60 services". Convert lakhs and crores into SEK or leave pay out.
- Say what permit you need in one line, so the recruiter does not have to guess: "Indian citizen; the role would need a work permit — salary above SEK 34,470; highly qualified occupation".
- Name your language levels honestly: English fluent, Swedish none or A1, rather than "basic".
- Education the reader can place. State the degree, university and years. Swedish and EU rules think in credits: the Blue Card test is 180 credits and the permit to look for work asks for a 60- or 120-credit master's. UHR can later issue a free statement of what your degree corresponds to.
- A short cover letter, addressed to a named person: why this employer, two things you have done that match the first two requirements, your notice period and when you could start once a permit is granted.
The contract
Sweden has no minimum wage law. Pay is set by collective agreements between employers and unions, or individually where there is none, so unions are a good source of salary information. The Public Employment Service adds that most permanent jobs start with a trial period of three to six months, that all workers get at least five weeks of paid holiday a year, and that you can ask for a written contract (for a work permit you need one anyway, signed by both sides).
Read it for: the monthly gross salary (the number the Agency tests), working hours, the job title and place of work (they must match the permit), whether a collective agreement applies and which union, the notice and probation periods, whether the employer pays your permit fee and relocation, and the insurance and pension cover the employer must have in place by your start date.
The interview
Technical roles usually run a phone screen, one or two technical rounds and a conversation with the team. Expect to be asked your notice period, your salary expectation and when you could start — and answer the last with a date that allows for the permit: "about one month after the Agency receives a complete application, plus the visit to the Embassy". Say plainly what you do not know. Ask who your manager would be, which collective agreement applies and what the first 90 days look like. A trial week is a red flag unless it is paid and the permit situation is clear, because you may not work before the permit is granted.
8.Salaries and take-home pay: what roles pay in 2026, and what you keep
Correct or addContents ↑Two anchors. SCB's median monthly salary for all occupations in 2025 was SEK 38,300 and the average SEK 42,900. The permit floors in this guide sit on that scale: SEK 34,470 for a standard work permit, SEK 28,725 for the exempt occupations and SEK 53,625 for a Blue Card. For your own number the main public source is SCB's wage statistics by occupation, which describe people already working in Sweden across all sectors in 2025.
| Occupation (SCB, 2025, monthly) | Median | Average | 10th percentile | 90th percentile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| All occupations | SEK 38,300 | SEK 42,900 | SEK 28,000 | SEK 61,700 |
| Software and system developers | SEK 53,500 | SEK 55,500 | SEK 39,600 | SEK 72,600 |
| System analysts and IT architects | SEK 56,200 | SEK 58,500 | SEK 41,000 | SEK 77,800 |
| Security specialists (ICT) | SEK 54,900 | SEK 57,800 | SEK 38,600 | SEK 79,200 |

Read the table against the floors. A developer at the 10th percentile (SEK 39,600) clears the work permit floor by about SEK 5,100 a month but not the Blue Card line; the median developer is within SEK 125 of it. A nurse at the 10th percentile clears the work permit floor narrowly.
What you keep
Tax is deducted by the employer through preliminary A-tax. In 2026 the average municipal tax rate is 32.38% (Österåker is lowest at 28.93%, Dorotea highest at 35.65%), and for people under 66 the 20% state income tax applies only to the part of income above SEK 660,400 a year, about SEK 55,000 a month. Employees under 66 also get an earned-income tax credit (jobbskatteavdrag), which Ekonomifakta puts at about SEK 4,278 a month at a salary of SEK 38,800 and SEK 4,366 at SEK 44,600. Our arithmetic from those inputs — the average municipal rate, a basic allowance of about SEK 17,400 and the credit, with no church fee and nothing for pension saving — gives roughly:
| Gross a month | Tax a month | Net a month | Share paid in tax |
|---|---|---|---|
| SEK 38,800 | about SEK 7,800 | about SEK 31,000 | about 20% |
| SEK 44,600 | about SEK 9,600 | about SEK 35,000 | about 21.5% |
These are estimates for a single person in an average municipality; Skatteverket's tax table for your municipality gives the exact figure. If you are taxed under A-tax you file a return in the spring after the income year. A flat-rate tax for non-residents, SINK, is 22.5% and is meant for short assignments, which the Tax Agency and sweden.se put at under six months; most people on a two-year permit pay A-tax.
The offer
Negotiate on the monthly gross, the collective agreement, holidays above the five weeks, relocation (flights, temporary housing, shipping) with any clawback, and who pays the permit fees. Compare with an Indian CTC only after you have run the net, and remember that the insurance and occupational pension the employer must provide for the permit are part of the Swedish package.
9.Applying from India: the e-service, the Embassy in New Delhi, VFS and the first-time sequence
Correct or addContents ↑Almost everything happens online, but one step is in person. The sequence for a first work permit, according to the Agency's pages:
- You get a job and a signed contract. Nothing starts without it.
- The employer opens your application in the e-service, with your name, date of birth, citizenship and the email address you will use until the decision.
- The trade union is given the chance to comment on the terms.
- You complete your part, attach documents in Swedish or English (certified translations plus the original-language copy), name the embassy where you will present your passport, and pay with a Visa or Mastercard. Your family can be included in the same e-service. Fees: SEK 2,200 for you, SEK 1,500 for each adult family member and SEK 750 for each child; there is no refund if you are refused.
- The Agency examines the case: a decision within 30 days is pledged for complete highly qualified applications, and up to four months is normal for the rest.
- You present your passport. The Agency's page says most applicants are first sent a digital passport check by app and are told if they must visit an embassy in person. The Embassy's page (last updated 16 February 2024) says that since 1 November 2022 applicants must show the passport in person when the Agency asks.
- Biometrics for the permit card are collected at the Embassy in New Delhi, which covers India, Nepal, Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Bhutan. The Embassy says they can only be submitted there, before or after the decision, with no appointment.
- The decision arrives by email, and the permit card is collected at the Embassy or at a Swedish consulate that lists collection days.
The Embassy and VFS
The Embassy's contact page lists biometrics for residence permits on weekdays 08:30 to 10:30 IST and card collection 11:00 to 12:00 IST, strictly timed (no registration after 10:20 for biometrics or 11:50 for collection), with your original passport; phones and bags may not be taken in. Migration questions go to a dedicated email address and a telephone line open 12:00 to 13:00 IST. The section was closed to visitors from 14 to 18 September 2026, which shows that arrangements change: read the page before you travel. VFS Global is Sweden's visa application centre in India (the Embassy says it works only with VFS in India and Nepal), but that is for visas for short visits; permit applications and fees go through Migrationsverket's e-service. The Embassy's warning is blunt: it has nothing to do with sellers outside its premises, and no seller can influence the processing time or the decision.
Before you travel
The main rule, repeated by the Public Employment Service, is that you apply for and are granted the work permit before entering Sweden. A first-time ICT applicant must wait for the decision before travelling. If you are refused while already in Sweden, you must leave. Keep the contract, your degree certificates, your passport, the decision and proof of insurance in one folder: the employer, the bank, the Tax Agency and the landlord will each ask for some of them in your first month.
10.Before your first day: personnummer, the ID card, a bank account, BankID, healthcare and a roof
Correct or addContents ↑One number unlocks most of Swedish life: the personnummer, the personal identity number.
The personnummer
If you plan to stay in Sweden for a year or more you are registered in the population register by the Swedish Tax Agency (Skatteverket) and receive a personnummer for life. For a stay of less than a year you can apply for a coordination number (samordningsnummer), which lets you deal with employers and authorities but gives less access. For someone from outside the EU the work permit must be approved before the registration can be finalised.
The procedure on Skatteverket's pages: submit your move online up to 14 days before you travel (you need a valid residence permit card and your passport, and sweden.se says you need the digital identity Freja eID to start online), then make an identity check in person at a service centre; since 3 June 2024 it uses digital facial comparison at 58 centres. Skatteverket says a case takes about five weeks before it is given to a caseworker, so start as early as the rules allow and book the identity check as soon as you land.
The ID card, bank account and BankID
The Swedish ID card, issued by Skatteverket in person at a service centre, is the standard identification for non-citizens; you can apply only with a personnummer, not a coordination number. A bank account needs your passport, residence permit card, employment details and an address; a personnummer makes the opening quicker. Once the account is active the bank sets up BankID, the digital identity used for payments, healthcare and authorities, and your employer will need an IBAN for your salary.
Healthcare
With a personnummer you can choose and register at a health centre (vårdcentral) through 1177.se, which is free; call 1177 for medical advice and 112 in an emergency. Healthcare is available before you have the number, but some digital services are not. If your stay is a year or less you must have comprehensive health insurance, a condition added on 1 June 2026.
Housing
There is no single national housing portal. First-hand contracts can have waiting times of several years in the larger cities; second-hand sublets are the usual way to start, and smaller towns often have more direct availability. Stockholm's housing agency, Bostadsförmedlingen, mediated 1,763 homes in September 2026, charges an annual queue fee and lists homes with short queue times. sweden.se names Blocket, Bostadsportal, Samtrygg and the regional relocation portals. Two rules from the official pages: ask the landlord to confirm that a sublet is allowed, and ask for a written contract before you pay any deposit or rent. Be wary of unusually low prices and of any request for money before a contract exists. The Agency adds that if an employer wants you to live at the workplace or share a small flat with several others, that is a sign it is not following the rules.
11.Swedish: how much you need, SFI, and why it matters for citizenship
Correct or addContents ↑English is the working language in much of Swedish technology, and in higher technical professions it is often enough to be hired. The Public Employment Service's English pages are direct about the rest: you will find it difficult to get a job without at least basic Swedish, most jobs require fluency, and the exceptions are the higher technical professions and other sectors where highly skilled competence is required.
SFI
Svenska för invandrare (SFI) is Swedish for immigrants, taught by the municipality where you live. Arbetsförmedlingen says that once you are a resident and have a personnummer you contact your local municipality about it, and sweden.se adds that tax-funded language programmes exist in every municipality and that many employers offer Swedish courses, so ask about one at the offer stage. The highest SFI course, course D, is also one of the ways to prove Swedish for citizenship.
Why it matters beyond the job
Since 6 June 2026, applicants for citizenship aged 16 to 66 must show knowledge of Swedish and of Swedish society. Accepted proof includes a pass in the highest SFI course, a pass in Swedish or Swedish as a second language at school or in municipal adult education, a result from the university Swedish test (Tisus) and, if you can show none of these, a citizenship test run by the Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR). The society part of the test was due to start in August 2026. On 30 September 2026 UHR recommended postponing the new Swedish language test and the Government has yet to decide when it starts; the requirement itself stays, so SFI D or Tisus is the safe plan.
A realistic plan
Start in your first month, tell your employer you want paid study time, and aim for working Swedish within two years. The citizenship wait is now eight years, which is long enough to learn the language properly whether or not you want the passport.
12.Is your Indian degree valid in Sweden? UHR, the Blue Card test and the regulated professions
Correct or addContents ↑For most jobs nobody formally recognises anything: the employer decides whether your degree and experience fit the job. Formal assessment matters in three places.
The Blue Card and the permit to look for work
A Blue Card needs a degree that corresponds to at least 180 higher education credits, or five years of relevant experience. The permit to look for work needs a degree equal to a 60- or 120-credit master's, a professional degree of 60 to 330 credits or a doctorate. A four-year B.Tech or B.E. is the case you would expect to meet the 180-credit test, but the Agency decides on the documents you attach, with certified translations of anything not in English or Swedish.
The UHR recognition statement
The Swedish Council for Higher Education (UHR) issues a recognition statement that says what your foreign education corresponds to in the Swedish system. It does not give you a Swedish qualification, and it is free of charge. The average wait is about two to four months from a complete application. UHR accepts applications from EU/EEA citizens and from people with a residence permit, work permit or valid reception card in Sweden, and if you are in Sweden waiting for a decision you can send the Agency's confirmation that your application was received. That order matters: you usually obtain the statement after the permit, to show an employer, not before it. UHR does not assess incomplete education, and regulated professions are assessed by the authority responsible.
Regulated professions
Doctors, nurses, dentists and other health professionals need a licence from the National Board of Health and Welfare (Socialstyrelsen); teachers need certification from Skolverket. Each authority has its own steps, and the health route is described below. The Government's list for the 75% salary floor treats doctors, dentists and nurses who are in the process of getting Swedish certification as a separate exempt group, which suggests the Government expects the process to take time.
Two Indian-specific traps
A "diploma" after the 10th is not a degree and will not meet the Blue Card's 180-credit test, though a work permit does not require a degree if the job and the pay meet the conditions. And the UHR statement describes what you completed, so make sure your certificates name the programme and its length.
13.Freshers and students: the route that works, and why "jobs in Sweden for Indian freshers" is a study question
Correct or addContents ↑Said plainly: a 22-year-old with an Indian B.Tech and no work experience will not usually be hired from Pune into Stockholm. An employer would have to hold the position for months, pay a salary above SEK 34,470 and take on the paperwork for someone it has never met. The Agency's data point the same way: first-time applications for highly qualified occupations fell by only six per cent between 2024 and 2025, and those are mostly experienced hires. The route that does work is a Swedish degree.
The route
- Study in Sweden, at master's level or above. The Agency says that in 2026 students got restrictions on working alongside studies and higher requirements for academic progress, so plan on studying, not on a student job paying the bills.
- The permit after studies. Apply before your student permit expires. You must have completed the whole programme to which you were admitted and passed all your courses, and show SEK 10,656 a month (the 2026 figure) for each month you ask for. The fee is SEK 1,500 and the permit lasts up to a year after a bachelor's or master's, and 12 to 18 months after a doctorate.
- A work permit from inside Sweden. You can apply while you hold the permit to look for work. A person who applies for a first work permit while holding a Swedish student or researcher permit is on the 75% floor (SEK 28,725 a month) for two years; the Agency's page does not spell out whether someone who has already moved to the job-search permit gets the same floor, so ask before you rely on it.
- Permanent residence after four years of work permits in the last seven. Student years do not count towards the four.
A catch to know about
For citizenship, the Agency states that time on a residence permit for studies is not included in the period of habitual residence, except in some cases for doctoral studies. A student who works afterwards will therefore reach the eight-year mark later than the year of arrival suggests.
Coming with a foreign master's
If you already have an Indian master's, the permit to look for work is the other option: it needs SEK 13,000 a month for up to nine months (SEK 117,000), and 75% of complete cases were decided within five months. That is a large sum to commit on a market with 8.1% unemployment, and the permit does not let you work until you have applied for a work permit.
Honest odds
For an Indian graduate the plan the Agency's rules support most directly is a Swedish master's in a field employers are buying, a thesis or internship with a company, and a job offer before the study permit ends. Be as sceptical of any agent selling a "complete package" of admission, flat and job as you would of one selling a permit.
14.Doctors, nurses and engineers: Socialstyrelsen, the language bar and what the professions pay
Correct or addContents ↑The regulated professions have the clearest rules and the longest road.
Doctors
Socialstyrelsen's English pages say the title doctor of medicine is protected, you need a Swedish licence or a special authorisation, and you need to learn Swedish. For a doctor educated outside the EU/EEA there are two options. The first is five steps through the National Board of Health and Welfare: have your education assessed (no Swedish needed for this step); take a proficiency test; take a course in Swedish laws and regulations; undergo clinical training; and send your application for the licence. From the second step on you must be able to work in Swedish, and a certificate of your Swedish goes in with the final application. The second option is a complementary programme at a university or university college, where places are limited and many universities want the Board's decision first. The Board's own estimate is that the whole path usually takes two to four years, and while you wait you may practise a health care profession that does not need a licence. SCB's table above gives SEK 56,300 as the median for resident physicians and SEK 96,800 for specialist physicians.
Nurses and other health professions
Nurses, dentists and the other professions are listed on the same licensing site, each with its own steps and language requirement; read the page for your profession before you accept a post. Nurses with foreign qualifications who are in the process of certification are on the 75% salary floor (SEK 28,725), and a professional nurse's median pay is SEK 42,900. Some work for assistant nurses and care assistants is also on the 75% list, but a nurse who takes an assistant's job to get in should ask how long it will be before the licence changes the contract.
Engineers
Engineering jobs are not licensed in the way medicine is: the employer looks at your degree, your experience and, in many posts, your Swedish. The permits are the same work permit and Blue Card described above, and SCB's medians (electrical, electronics and telecoms engineers SEK 54,200; mechanical engineers SEK 51,800) are well above the work permit floor and, for the electrical group, close to the Blue Card line.
15.Changing jobs and losing one: new permits, the three months, and what Northvolt showed
Correct or addContents ↑Your permit names an occupation and often an employer, and when either changes, the permit may no longer be enough.
A new employer or a new occupation
If you take a job with another employer, change profession or get completely new duties, you apply for a new work permit; the same applies if the employer changes its company registration number. You may start with the new employer as soon as you have applied, as long as you applied before your old permit expired. The new job has to meet the requirements again, including the advertising requirement. Some permits are limited to the occupation only, in which case a new employer in the same occupation does not need a new permit: your decision and your permit card show which kind you have.
If you have a Blue Card
You must notify the Agency by letter if your employment ends, if you change jobs, or if something affecting the conditions changes — for example, your salary no longer reaches the threshold. The Blue Card requirements must be met in the new employment, and failing to report can lead to refusal or withdrawal.
If you lose your job
If you are dismissed or resign, you no longer meet the conditions for the permit. You can stay in Sweden to look for a new job for three months after your last day of employment, provided the work permit is still valid; if you find nothing in that time, or the permit expires first, and you have no other ground to stay, you must leave. In a bankruptcy the Agency's rule is that employees keep their jobs until they are dismissed and the notice period has expired, and the three months run from then.
On the Northvolt bankruptcy in March 2025 the Agency said about 5,000 people worked for the company in Sweden and 1,650 granted work permits named it as the employer. Of 350 workers made redundant in the autumn of 2024, some had left, about 100 had applied for new permits, about 60 had been granted them and more than 80 temporary permits were being considered for revocation; open applications for Northvolt jobs could no longer be treated as complete.
How to protect yourself
Keep savings for three months of rent, keep your payslips, and ask about the financial position of a small or young employer. The Agency checks whether an employer can pay the salary it stated, and employers in the industries with higher investigation requirements must show they can pay for at least three months. The Agency can revoke a permit when the conditions of employment are not met, so raise problems early with the union for your occupation; if the employer has broken the rules, use the Agency's tip-off form and, for crimes, the police.
16.Family: spouse work rights, the maintenance requirement and the 1 October 2026 changes
Correct or addContents ↑Your spouse or partner and your children can apply with you, in the same e-service. The Agency's pages say that if your family is granted residence permits, adult family members and children who turn at least 16 during the current year are permitted to work. The fees are SEK 1,500 for an adult and SEK 750 for a child.
The maintenance requirement
When the family applies together with you, you must be able to support them. The Agency adds up your housing cost, then requires that your income after tax leaves a set amount for food, clothing, telephone, insurance and other costs. The amounts it prints are:
| Household member | Left after paying rent (SEK a month) |
|---|---|
| Single adult | 6,243 |
| Cohabiting spouses or partners | 10,314 |
| Child, 0 to 6 | 3,336 |
| Child, 7 to 10 | 4,004 |
| Child, 11 to 14 | 4,672 |
| Child, 15 or older | 5,339 |
The child amounts are reduced by child allowance. Rent includes heating if it is not in the rent; for a tenant-owner flat the fee and loan interest count; amortisation does not. Taxed salary counts, and so do assets shown by bank statements; unemployment benefits, grants and subsidised employment do not. Since 1 October 2026 the requirement is also examined when you extend the permit, not only on the first application, and a family member's own income may be counted, with limits.
Other 1 October 2026 changes
Family members of Blue Card and ICT holders who will stay for a year or less must have comprehensive health insurance. For permanent residence, each family member now has to apply for their own residence permit to live with you, and to qualify for permanent residence themselves they must have held a permit for at least three years, be able to support themselves if over 18, and live a well-behaved life.
If the family comes later
Family members who join after you have settled make their own application, and you must meet the maintenance requirement then. The Agency's article of 19 October 2026 quotes an SCB study of 2023 arrivals: about a third of male and a quarter of female work-permit holders brought a partner, about a fifth brought children, and it was more common the higher the qualification.
Housing is the real cost of a family move, because the maintenance test uses your actual rent: negotiate relocation help, and note that childcare and school places are arranged by the municipality (sweden.se has a page on how to apply).
17.Permanent residence and citizenship: four years, eight years, and why some Indians stop at the first
Correct or addContents ↑Sweden is stricter about citizenship than it was a year ago, and unchanged on permanent residence for ordinary work permit holders.
Permanent residence
A work permit holder can be granted a permanent residence permit after four years of work permits within the last seven, which need not be consecutive; ICT time counts, although the three-year ICT maximum means it cannot get you there alone. For an EU Blue Card the period is 36 months, and the Agency says you can apply as soon as you meet the requirements, even while the card is still valid; the card is then withdrawn. For other work permits the Agency's page says you apply together with an extension, while a Fragomen alert of 10 August 2026 says that from 11 June 2026 temporary permit holders can apply as soon as they qualify. The two do not match, so ask the Agency which applies to your permit on the day.
You must also show that you can support yourself through legal, taxed income from employment or your own company: after paying your housing cost you need at least SEK 6,243 a month for a single adult, you must have the income at the time of the decision rather than a promise of one, and you must live a well-behaved life, a test made stricter on 13 July 2026. If you wait until after the permit has expired, you lose the right to work and so fail the test.
Citizenship: eight years from 6 June 2026
The main rule is that you must have lived in Sweden for at least eight years (it was five). The shorter periods are two years for Nordic citizens and former Swedish citizens, seven for the spouse, registered partner or cohabiting partner of a Swedish citizen who has lived with them for the past five years, seven for people under 21 and refugees, and five for stateless people. There were no transition rules: cases not decided before 6 June 2026 are assessed under the new ones. You also need:
- a permanent residence permit (with a few exceptions);
- proof of identity, with a visit to the Agency in person;
- income of at least three income base amounts a year (SEK 250,200 for 2026, SEK 20,850 a month before tax), mainly from employment or self-employment, and no more than six months of income support in total over the past three years;
- knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society for ages 16 to 66, as described in the language section;
- an orderly and honourable life.
The application fee is SEK 2,900 and is not refunded. The Agency's page shows that 75% of recently decided cases took up to 52 months; treat that as the outer limit of the queue. Time abroad also counts against you: more than six weeks outside Sweden in a year means the whole time away is subtracted from the residence period.
Dual citizenship, India and the OCI card
Sweden has allowed dual citizenship since 1 July 2001: you can keep your foreign citizenship if the other country allows it. India does not allow dual citizenship, so a Swedish passport means ending your Indian citizenship and surrendering the Indian passport, and then registering for an OCI card, for which the OCI portal asks for the surrender certificate if you surrendered your passport in or after 2010. An OCI cardholder cannot hold an Indian passport. Because the choice is binary, some Indians stop at permanent residence, which already gives the right to work for any employer.
18.Scams and false promises: nobody can sell you a Swedish work permit
Correct or addContents ↑The rule that defeats nearly every fraud aimed at Indians who want to work in Sweden is the Agency's own: it is always the Swedish Migration Agency that decides, and a company or an agent cannot promise that you will be allowed to work in Sweden. You pay application fees to the Agency and to nobody else. Since 1 June 2026 trading in work permits and exploiting foreign workers are criminal offences in their own right, and the Agency can refuse applications from employers with defects.
What the Embassy of Sweden in India warns about
On 8 August 2025 the Embassy in New Delhi said it had received several reports of suspicious job offers, especially by unsolicited email and social media. It cannot verify individual offers, and its warning signs are:
- an offer for a job you never applied for, and requests for large payments to get a work permit;
- consultants or agents who claim they can guarantee visa approvals or job placements;
- requests for your bank account details to get a job or visa;
- any claim that a company has a special arrangement to fast-track applications with the Embassy;
- an email that does not come from an address ending in @migrationsverket.se or @gov.se.
Registered Swedish companies have an organisation number you can check with Bolagsverket, and payments should be made only through the Embassy or the Agency's website.
The Agency's checklist for a genuine offer
- Check the company exists: search its organisation number on the Swedish Tax Agency's site; if it does not exist, someone is trying to scam you.
- Call the employer on a number you find yourself, and ask about hours, pay, holidays, duties, the place of work and who you will work with.
- Write only to the official company address, not a private one, and keep every message.
- Read the contract and check that salary, hours and holidays match what you were told.
- Pay no application fees to anyone other than the Agency; if an employer pays for you, ask for an invoice and pay the company's account, never a private one.
- Ask about housing if the employer arranges it: living at the workplace or sharing a small flat with several others is a sign it is not following the rules.
- Never pay back any of your salary to your employer.
Other frauds
- The rental deposit: a cheap flat, a landlord who is "abroad" and keys that will arrive once you pay. sweden.se advises a written contract before any deposit and caution about unusually low prices.
- The underpaid job: pay below the collective agreement or hours that are not in the contract. The Agency can revoke a permit when employment conditions are not met, and false information about the terms in an application may be reported to the police.
- The permit trade: someone offering to sell a permit or put you on a company's payroll for a fee. Since 1 June 2026 that is itself a crime.
If you have been scammed, report it to the police in the country where it happened and tell the Agency through its tip-off form. You are the victim, not the offender, and the next person is helped by your report.
19.Where the community helps: networks, events and the other guides
Correct or addContents ↑Statistics Sweden counted 61,298 India-born residents at the end of 2025 (59,290 a year earlier); the Ministry of External Affairs puts the Indian diaspora at 91,600 in January 2026. Work-permit holders are registered mostly in Stockholm County, Västra Götaland and Skåne, which is where the IT, engineering and research employers are.
Networks that help with work
- Your own field's community. The professional and alumni groups of the multinationals and the Indian IT companies are where roles are passed on before they are advertised.
- The unions. The union for your occupation comments on your permit application, publishes salary information and advises when an employer breaks a collective agreement.
- Free official help: Arbetsförmedlingen's English pages, sweden.se's Work in Sweden programme (with a step-by-step moving guide, a cost-of-living calculator and India-focused sessions), Migrationsverket's e-service, and the Embassy's migration inbox for permit questions.
Finding them on Namaste
The Indians in Sweden page brings together the community's events, groups and businesses, and the Indian events in Sweden calendar has the pujas, concerts and festival programmes where "which team is hiring, and does the employer sponsor permits?" gets answered by people who have just done it. If you are weighing Sweden against other destinations, the Germany guide covers the Blue Card and the Opportunity Card, the Netherlands guide the highly skilled migrant route, the Ireland guide the Critical Skills permit, and the UK guide the Skilled Worker route.
If Sweden does not work out
The skills travel: a Swedish employer on your CV, a permit record and a personnummer. The date at the top of this page is the day the figures were last checked; the median, the Blue Card threshold, the citizenship language test and the extension rules after 2 December 2026 are the items most likely to change.

Questions people ask
- Can an Indian get a job in Sweden without knowing Swedish?
- In IT, engineering and research, yes: English is often the working language in higher technical professions, and the Blue Card and ICT permits need no Swedish. The Public Employment Service says most other jobs require fluency, and that you will find it difficult to get a job without at least basic Swedish. Plan on SFI, the municipal Swedish course, from your first month, because Swedish is also needed for citizenship.
- What is the minimum salary for a Swedish work permit in 2026?
- Since 1 June 2026 the monthly salary must be at least 90% of the median salary at the time of application, which is SEK 34,470 after SCB published a median of SEK 38,300 on 16 June 2026. The pay must also match collective agreements or common practice. Twenty-seven occupations, such as IT support technicians and systems administrators, and some groups, such as doctors in the process of certification, need only 75%, SEK 28,725. The figure is republished each June.
- What is the EU Blue Card salary in Sweden in 2026?
- SEK 53,625 a month since 15 July 2026, which is 1.25 times the average gross salary published by the National Mediation Office. You need a degree of at least 180 credits or five years of relevant experience, and a highly qualified contract of at least six months. The card is valid from nine months to four years, decisions averaged 10 to 15 days from January to May 2026, and permanent residence is possible after 36 months.
- Is there a job-seeker visa for Sweden for Indians?
- Only for people with a master’s degree or higher. The permit to look for work or start a business lasts up to nine months, costs SEK 2,200 and needs SEK 13,000 in the bank for each month you apply for, plus the cost of the journey home and comprehensive health insurance. You apply from outside Sweden, it does not let you work, and if you find a job you apply for a work permit from inside Sweden. Three quarters of complete applications were decided within five months.
- What happened to the certified-employer fast track, and how long does a permit take?
- Migrationsverket closed the certification scheme on 15 December 2023 and replaced it on 29 January 2024 with a model that pledges a decision within 30 days for complete applications in highly qualified occupations; more than 80% of those cases were decided in 30 days in 2026. Other work permits take about four months if complete and nine if incomplete. Blue Cards averaged 10 to 15 days from January to May 2026, and ICT permits 22 to 27 days.
- How many Indians live in Sweden and which companies hire them?
- Statistics Sweden counted 61,298 India-born residents at the end of 2025 (59,290 a year earlier); India’s Ministry of External Affairs estimates 91,600 overseas Indians in Sweden in January 2026. Indians received 2,633 of the first-time work permits in 2025, the most of any nationality. Employers named by the Migration Agency include Tata Consultancy Services, Capgemini, Hitachi Energy, Volvo and Scania; HCLTech, Infosys and Wipro also have Swedish operations.
- What does a software developer earn in Sweden and what is the take-home pay?
- SCB’s 2025 data give software and system developers a median of SEK 53,500 a month, an average of SEK 55,500 and a range from SEK 39,600 (10th percentile) to SEK 72,600 (90th). With the average municipal tax of 32.38% and the earned-income tax credit, our arithmetic gives about SEK 31,000 net on SEK 38,800 gross and about SEK 35,000 net on SEK 44,600, roughly a fifth of pay in tax at those levels. State tax of 20% starts at SEK 660,400 a year.
- Can my spouse work in Sweden on my permit?
- Yes. The Migration Agency says that when a family is granted residence permits, adult family members and children who turn 16 during the year are permitted to work. Fees are SEK 1,500 for an adult and SEK 750 for a child. You must meet a maintenance requirement, such as SEK 6,243 a month left after rent for a single adult and SEK 10,314 for a couple, and since 1 October 2026 it is also examined when you extend the permit.
- When can I get permanent residence and citizenship in Sweden?
- A work permit holder can be granted permanent residence after four years of work permits in the last seven, and a Blue Card holder after 36 months, if they can support themselves and have lived a well-behaved life. Citizenship now needs eight years of residence instead of five since 6 June 2026, a permanent residence permit, an income of at least three income base amounts (SEK 250,200 in 2026), knowledge of Swedish and Swedish society, and a SEK 2,900 fee. Time on a student permit does not count.
- Does India allow dual citizenship, and what about the OCI card?
- Sweden has accepted dual citizenship since 1 July 2001, but India does not, so taking Swedish citizenship means giving up Indian citizenship and surrendering your Indian passport. You can then apply for an OCI card online; if you surrendered your passport in or after 2010 the OCI portal asks for the surrender certificate. An OCI cardholder cannot hold an Indian passport. Some Indians therefore stop at permanent residence.
- How do I get a personnummer, and how long does it take?
- If you will stay a year or more you register in the population register with Skatteverket and receive a personal identity number. You submit your move online up to 14 days before travelling with your passport and residence permit card, then make an identity check in person at a service centre. Skatteverket says a case takes about five weeks before it is given to a caseworker. For a work permit holder from outside the EU the permit must be approved before registration can be finalised.
- How can I tell whether a Swedish job offer or agent is a scam?
- If anyone asks you to pay for the job, a permit or an appointment, it is a scam: only the Migration Agency decides, and you pay it the fee yourself. Check the company’s organisation number, call it on a number you find yourself, and write only to official addresses. The Embassy in New Delhi warns of offers you never applied for, agents guaranteeing approval and requests for bank details; official emails end in @migrationsverket.se or @gov.se.
