Indians in Eindhoven: the 2026 guide to the ASML city, Meerhoven, the temples and the Ganeshotsav

Eindhoven is a city of 249,783 people (1 January 2026) in the south of the Netherlands that was a village until Philips arrived in 1891 and is now the Brainport region — the semiconductor and high-tech cluster around ASML in Veldhoven, the High Tech Campus (300 companies, 12,500 people, 85 nationalities), Philips, NXP, Signify, DAF and VDL, and the Eindhoven University of Technology. It is the place in Europe where an Indian chip engineer is most likely to end up, and its Indian community shows it: 9,507 residents of Indian background in the city (3.8% of it, second only to Amsterdam in absolute numbers), 1,043 more in Veldhoven, and a city councillor's estimate of more than ten thousand with the surrounding villages — 168 nationalities in a city that was almost entirely Dutch a generation ago. The rent is rising faster here than anywhere in the country (+11.9% in a year), the Vinex district of Meerhoven by the airport has been nicknamed "Wokhoven" for its Asian population, and the community has built two mandirs, an ISKCON centre, a Ganesh procession through the centre and a dozen Indian grocers in fifteen years.

Eindhoven is a ring of former villages around a rebuilt centre, with the airport and ASML to the west and the High Tech Campus to the south. Rents are Numbeo's September 2026 figures (one-bedroom €1,527 in the centre, €1,292 outside; three-bedroom €2,382 and €1,850) and the Pararius average of €20.25 per square metre — the lowest of the big five cities and the fastest-rising.

Renting and buying

The national rules are in the Netherlands guide: a two-month deposit cap, no agency fees, permanent contracts, the points system, registration as a right and a duty. Eindhoven's specifics: the market has tightened sharply since 2024 as ASML hired, a family house in Meerhoven runs €1,800–2,300, and the Holland Expat Center's housing partners and the ASML relocation desk hear of flats before Pararius does. Many Indian families buy within two years — Eindhoven's house prices are far below the Randstad's and the 30% ruling counts in full for a mortgage. A parking permit costs €4.72 a month in the cheapest outer zone (€56.64 a year) and up to €23.87 in the centre in 2026; a second car is dearer.

Work

ASML — headquartered in Veldhoven with its largest research and manufacturing site, 47,878 employees worldwide at the end of 2025 and more than half of them in the Netherlands, and since September 2026 an Indian operation with Tata Electronics — is the single largest employer of Indian engineers in Europe outside the UK. Around it: Philips and its Research campus, NXP, Signify, DAF Trucks, VDL, the High Tech Campus (IBM, Intel, ASML and Philips labs among 300 firms), TU/e and its spin-offs, Sendcloud, ALTEN, Neways, and the suppliers of the chip-machine supply chain across Brabant. Indian knowledge migrants here are process, mechatronics, software and optics engineers, PhDs and their partners; the salary thresholds, the 30% ruling and the search period are national and in the Netherlands guide. English is the working language of all of it; Dutch is needed for the schools and the villages.

Getting around

Hermes/Bravo buses (checked in with a bank card), with the 400 and 401 airport shuttles between Eindhoven Centraal and the airport every ten to fifteen minutes (€5.15 single, €10.30 return); NS trains from Eindhoven Centraal to Utrecht in 50 minutes, Amsterdam in 80, Den Bosch in 20, Tilburg and Breda for the west; the bicycle for everything within the ring, with ASML and the campus twenty minutes from the centre by bike path. Eindhoven Airport flies to Europe and the Gulf on the low-cost carriers; Schiphol is two hours by train for the KLM nonstops to India. A car is normal in Eindhoven in a way it is not in Amsterdam — the villages, the weekend, the family visit to Amstelveen — and parking permits are cheap. Groceries

Between them: every regional rice and flour, fresh curry leaves and drumsticks on delivery days, South Indian batters, frozen parathas, pooja items, sweets. Albert Heijn and Jumbo for basics; the Woensel market on Tuesdays and Saturdays for vegetables; Dookan and the supermarkets deliver to Veldhoven and the villages.

Restaurants

The Bollywood Film Festival at the Vue cinema (July 2026) and the Kinepolis Indian-film screenings are the evenings out; the Ganeshotsav's vegetarian food trucks are the year's best street food.

Temples and the gurdwara

Associations

Eindhoven has the densest association life of any Indian community in the Netherlands, and the IndiaInEindhoven / HoiIndia portal lists a dozen: the Eindhoven Marathi Mitramandal (the Ganeshotsav and garba), the Telugu Association Netherlands (TANE, founded 2011 and registered in Eindhoven; Ugadi and Sankranti), the Eindhoven Malayalees (Onam), Bonghoven (the Durga Puja in Veldhoven), the Hamara Group (Diwali), the Indian Center in Netherlands (ICIN; Diwali at GLOW, a directory of gurdwaras and services), the Indian Students' Association Eindhoven at TU/e, the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh, and the Meetup groups for dandiya and garba nights. Eindhoven Cricket Club (founded 1915 as the Philips sports club; Sportpark Dommeldal Zuid, Locatellistraat 3) is the cricket club, majority South Asian and recruiting.

Two budgets

A single knowledge migrant in a one-bedroom outside the centre spends roughly €2,200–2,500 a month all-in — the cheapest of the big five cities; a couple in Strijp-S about €3,200; a family of four in a Meerhoven house about €5,000–5,700 before international-school fees, and the International School Eindhoven's subsidised fees keep those modest. Rents are rising faster here than anywhere in the country (+11.9% in a year) as ASML hires, so the gap with the Randstad is closing.

Salaries are not indexed automatically as in Belgium and Luxembourg, but the 8% holiday allowance is a legal floor, a thirteenth month is common in IT and finance, and the 30% ruling — 30% of salary tax-free in 2026, 27% from 2027 — is what makes the first five years' arithmetic work. Compare offers on net-of-tax terms and ask whether the employer grosses up.

Energy and water

The Dutch energy market is open: you choose an electricity and gas supplier on a comparison site (Independer, Gaslicht) and can switch yearly; the grid operator that owns the meters and handles connections and moves is Enexis. Water is a regional monopoly with no contract to shop for — Brabant Water here; notify the move-in date and the meter reading. Most flats are gas-heated with a combi boiler; new-build in the Vinex districts is increasingly all-electric with a heat pump, which shows up as a higher electricity bill and no gas bill. Set up the smart-meter app on day one — Dutch winters are billed monthly on an estimate and settled once a year, and a wrong estimate is a nasty April surprise.

Waste

Eindhoven collects residual waste, GFT, paper and PMD in wheeled bins per house or underground containers per block on a fixed calendar, with glass and textiles to street containers and bulky waste by appointment; Meerhoven's new-build streets have underground containers. Every municipality charges a fixed annual waste tax (afvalstoffenheffing) and a water-board tax on top of the rent, and both arrive by post once you are registered; the municipality's app knows the collection days for your street.

Phones and internet

KPN, Odido and VodafoneZiggo are the networks; SIMs are sold with ID at any supermarket and registered in minutes; a 10 GB plan is about €15–20 a month and fibre or cable internet €40–55. The country code is +31; mobiles start with 06.

Parking and the car

A resident parking permit costs €4.72 a month in the cheapest outer zones (€56.64 a year) and up to €23.87 in the centre in 2026, a second car is dearer, and the villages have driveways — a car is normal in Eindhoven in a way it is not in Amsterdam, for ASML's shifts, the villages and the family visit to Amstelveen. An Indian licence is valid for 185 days after registration and cannot be exchanged unless you hold the 30% ruling — the rule is in the Netherlands guide. Most Indian families in the cities manage without a car in the first year; car-share (Greenwheels, MyWheels) covers the weekend.

The weather and the calendar

Maritime and mild: an annual mean around 10–11 °C, rain and wind in every month, short winter days, a heatwave or two in summer; a good rain jacket beats an umbrella on a bicycle, and Dutch GPs prescribe vitamin D to almost every newcomer from India. Few public holidays — King's Day on 27 April is the one the whole country celebrates in orange — and shops open on Sundays in the cities. GLOW, the November light festival, brings hundreds of thousands into the centre and the Indian Center's Diwali with it; the Dutch Design Week in October fills every hotel.

What people wish they had known

• The GP is the bottleneck, not the permit: start ringing practices the day you have a postcode, and use the expat centre's list.
• "No registration" flats are illegal and common; walk away, however good the flat.
• The 30% ruling is negotiated, not automatic: ask in the offer, and ask whether the employer grosses up.
• The Dutch school split at twelve decides more than any international school does; understand it before your child is ten.
• The groups know first — which grocer has curry leaves this week, which crèche has a place, which GP opened its list. Meerhoven, Veldhoven and the villages are where families buy

Every Indian who has moved abroad has the same first move: find the WhatsApp group. Eindhoven has more than any city its size — the ASML groups by building and by intake, the Meerhoven parents, the Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Malayali and Bengali ones, the garba group, the cricket group, the "who has a spare cot" group, the IndiaInEindhoven Meetups — and they are how a community that grew from nothing in fifteen years has always run. This guide is not going to pretend otherwise.

What the groups are good at, and what they are not

They are fast and warm: ask at nine in the evening which GP in Meerhoven is still taking patients and somebody who registered last month will answer before ten. But you need to know somebody to get the link; the links that circulate are stale, and the live ones are where the "flat, pay the deposit first" scams start. A group of 1,000 people has no moderator, so the same three questions are asked every week and the answers scroll away. Every member can see your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: the flat in Helmond and the Durga Puja in Amstelveen arrive with the same weight as the one in Veldhoven.

What Namaste Community does instead

Your first week in the app

1. Install it, sign in, set your location to Eindhoven and the radius to 10 km. Get the app for iPhone or Android.
2. Join the general Eindhoven group and the one for your language or interest. Read before you post.
3. RSVP to one event in the next fortnight — the Ganeshotsav, a cricket practice, a bhajan evening at the Bhakti Center.
4. Ask the question you actually have, and say whether you are in the city or Veldhoven.
5. When you have found your house, your GP and your grocer, leave a review or an answer for the next engineer from Bengaluru.

Schools and childcare

The International School Eindhoven (ISE), Oirschotsedijk 14B (+31 40 251 94 37), is Dutch-subsidised, teaches the IB from primary to diploma, and has waiting lists for some year groups "from time to time" — which, with ASML's hiring, means apply the day you have a contract. The free Dutch schools take children from four with newcomer language classes and are the choice of most Indian families who plan to stay; the villages' schools are good and Dutch-only. There is no Indian-curriculum school; Hindi, Marathi and Telugu classes run through the associations and private tutors. Daycare is private and subsidised through the childcare allowance (up to 96% of €11.23 an hour in 2026 for incomes to about €56,000); Meerhoven's crèches have waiting lists — register in pregnancy.

Health

Basic insurance within four months (about €159 a month, €385 deductible); a GP as soon as you have an address (the Expat Center keeps a list); the TB test at the GGD Brabant-Zuidoost within three months; the Catharina and Máxima hospitals are the city's. The rules are in the Netherlands guide.

South Asian neighbours

Eindhoven's community is Indian first — Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Malayali, Bengali, Punjabi, in roughly that order of visibility — with Pakistani, Sri Lankan Tamil, Bangladeshi and Nepali engineers and students alongside, sharing the grocers, the cricket club, the mosques of Woensel and the Geldrop gurdwara's langar.
