Indians in Rotterdam: the 2026 guide to the port city, the oldest temple in the Netherlands and the community

Rotterdam is a city of just over 673,000 people (1 January 2026) rebuilt from nothing after 1940 into the most modern skyline in the Netherlands, around the largest port in Europe. More than half its residents have at least one parent born abroad and 180 nationalities live here; the Surinamese-origin community of nearly 52,000 is the largest migrant-background group, and its Hindustani half built the mandirs of Rotterdam-Zuid and the Shri Shiv Mandir on Nozemanstraat — a basement temple that has been in use for more than forty years and is the oldest Hindu temple in the country. Alongside them are 4,548 residents of Indian background (plus 680 in Capelle aan den IJssel) who came for the port and its logistics firms, Erasmus MC and the university, Unilever, Shell's Pernis refinery, the consultancies and the Randstad's IT jobs — a smaller expat community than Amsterdam's or Eindhoven's, and a cheaper city to live in than either.

Rotterdam is split by the Maas: the rebuilt centre and the nineteenth-century districts north of the river, the docklands and the Hindustani districts of Zuid south of it, and the suburbs of Capelle, Hillegersberg and Nesselande on the edges. Rents are Numbeo's September 2026 figures (one-bedroom €1,677 in the centre, €1,361 outside; three-bedroom €2,789 and €2,030) and the Pararius average of €22.79 per square metre — rising faster than anywhere but Eindhoven.

Renting in Rotterdam

The rules are national — a two-month deposit cap, no agency fees, permanent contracts, the points system that caps regulated rents at €1,228.07 for 2026 and the Huurcommissie, registration as a right and a duty — and are in the Netherlands guide. Rotterdam's market is softer than Amsterdam's and tightening; a family three-bedroom in Prinsenland or Capelle runs €1,800–2,300, and the city is the easiest of the big five to buy in.

Work

Rotterdam's economy is the port — Europe's largest, with the terminal operators, the shipping lines, the logistics and commodity firms (Vopak, Van Oord, Vitol) and the Port Authority — plus Erasmus MC (the largest university hospital in the country) and Erasmus University, Unilever's research and headquarters functions, Shell Pernis (the largest refinery in Europe), Robeco and the financial firms, Coolblue and the e-commerce warehouses, and the consultancies and IT services firms serving them. Indian knowledge migrants here are in port IT and logistics, chemical and process engineering, medicine and research, and the Randstad's software jobs; the salary thresholds, the 30% ruling and the search period are national and in the Netherlands guide. English is the working language of the port and the university; Dutch is needed in the hospital's wards and the schools.

Getting around

RET metro (five lines, including the direct line to Capelle and the RandstadRail to The Hague), trams and buses, checked in with a bank card; Rotterdam Centraal with The Hague in 25 minutes, Utrecht in 40, Amsterdam in 40 by high-speed train and Schiphol in 25, and the Eurostar to Paris and London. The city is flat and cycle-friendly across the Erasmus bridge; the water taxi is the fun way over the river. A car is easier here than in Amsterdam — parking permits without the capital's waiting lists — and the A-roads reach everywhere. Groceries

• Indian Food Store Sardar Ji (Remon Afro Asian Market), West-Kruiskade 87 (+31 10 414 0955; Mon–Thu 10–19, Fri 10–20, Sun 12–18) — the city's Indian supermarket, on Rotterdam's Chinatown street.
• Wah Nam Hong, West-Kruiskade 4–6 — the large Asian supermarket a few doors down, with rice, lentils, coconut milk and an Indian shelf.
• The tokos and roti shops of Zuid around the Putselaan and the Afrikaanderplein — the Hindustani community's own, with fresh vegetables, masalas and sweets.
• Albert Heijn and Jumbo for basics; the Markthal and the Afrikaandermarkt (Wednesdays and Saturdays, the largest in the south) for vegetables and mangoes; Dookan and the Amstelveen supermarkets deliver.

Restaurants

Every kitchen has a full vegetarian menu; halal meat is everywhere in the west and Zuid.

Temples and the gurdwara

Rotterdam has the richest set of Hindustani temples in the Netherlands after The Hague: - Shri Ram Mandir, Putselaan 194, Rotterdam-Zuid — the largest, with life-size murtis of Shiva, Hanuman and Durga; the Wereldmuseum runs family visits. - Shree Maheshvar Dhaam, Putsebocht 163A, Zuid. - Shri Shiv Mandir, Nozemanstraat 3, Rotterdam-West — the oldest Hindu temple in the Netherlands, more than forty years in a basement and still full on Sundays. - Vaidik Mandir Arya Samaj, Slaghekstraat 95, Zuid — the Arya Samaj tradition. - Sai Baba Mandir, Teilingerstraat 13. - Gurdwara Shri Guru Nanak Dev, Ottergracht 6, Kralingse Veer (+31 10 442 2075) — langar and Sunday diwan. - The Hindustani Muslim community's mosques in Zuid; every mosque welcomes South Asian Muslims for Eid.

Associations

APNA, the Hindustani cultural organisation, runs the city's Divali festival; the Hindoestaanse organisations of Zuid run the temples and the Sri Saraswati school's programmes; the Bengali association Utsab holds its Durga Puja in Capelle; Erasmus University's Indian students' association and the port's Indian professional networks are the expat side. Two budgets

A single knowledge migrant in a one-bedroom outside the centre spends roughly €2,400–2,700 a month all-in; a couple in Kralingen about €3,500; a family of four in a house in Prinsenland, Nesselande or Capelle about €5,500–6,200 before international-school fees. Rotterdam is the easiest of the big five to buy in, and many families do within three years.

Salaries are not indexed automatically as in Belgium and Luxembourg, but the 8% holiday allowance is a legal floor, a thirteenth month is common in IT and finance, and the 30% ruling — 30% of salary tax-free in 2026, 27% from 2027 — is what makes the first five years' arithmetic work. Compare offers on net-of-tax terms and ask whether the employer grosses up.

Energy and water

The Dutch energy market is open: you choose an electricity and gas supplier on a comparison site (Independer, Gaslicht) and can switch yearly; the grid operator that owns the meters and handles connections and moves is Stedin. Water is a regional monopoly with no contract to shop for — Evides here; notify the move-in date and the meter reading. Most flats are gas-heated with a combi boiler; new-build in the Vinex districts is increasingly all-electric with a heat pump, which shows up as a higher electricity bill and no gas bill. Set up the smart-meter app on day one — Dutch winters are billed monthly on an estimate and settled once a year, and a wrong estimate is a nasty April surprise.

Waste

Rotterdam collects residual waste in underground containers opened with a pass, with separate containers for paper, glass and PMD and a growing GFT network; bulky waste is collected by appointment; the suburbs of Capelle and Nesselande use wheeled bins on a calendar. Every municipality charges a fixed annual waste tax (afvalstoffenheffing) and a water-board tax on top of the rent, and both arrive by post once you are registered; the municipality's app knows the collection days for your street.

Phones and internet

KPN, Odido and VodafoneZiggo are the networks; SIMs are sold with ID at any supermarket and registered in minutes; a 10 GB plan is about €15–20 a month and fibre or cable internet €40–55. The country code is +31; mobiles start with 06.

Parking and the car

Resident parking permits are available in most districts without Amsterdam's waiting lists; the centre and the Coolsingel are paid parking and a low-emission zone; the suburbs have driveways. The metro, the trams and the water taxi make a car optional in the city. An Indian licence is valid for 185 days after registration and cannot be exchanged unless you hold the 30% ruling — the rule is in the Netherlands guide. Most Indian families in the cities manage without a car in the first year; car-share (Greenwheels, MyWheels) covers the weekend.

The weather and the calendar

Maritime and mild: an annual mean around 10–11 °C, rain and wind in every month, short winter days, a heatwave or two in summer; a good rain jacket beats an umbrella on a bicycle, and Dutch GPs prescribe vitamin D to almost every newcomer from India. Few public holidays — King's Day on 27 April is the one the whole country celebrates in orange — and shops open on Sundays in the cities. The Erasmus bridge and the Maas are the city's identity; the Rotterdamse Dakendagen, the Summer Carnival and the North Sea Jazz festival fill the summer, and the APNA Divali fills de Doelen in October.

What people wish they had known

• The GP is the bottleneck, not the permit: start ringing practices the day you have a postcode, and use the expat centre's list.
• "No registration" flats are illegal and common; walk away, however good the flat.
• The 30% ruling is negotiated, not automatic: ask in the offer, and ask whether the employer grosses up.
• The Dutch school split at twelve decides more than any international school does; understand it before your child is ten.
• The groups know first — which grocer has curry leaves this week, which crèche has a place, which GP opened its list. Prinsenland, Nesselande and Capelle are where families buy

Every Indian who has moved abroad has the same first move: find the WhatsApp group. Rotterdam has them — "Indians in Rotterdam", the Erasmus and port groups, the Telugu, Tamil and Malayali ones, the Capelle parents, the cricket groups — and, as in The Hague, a Hindustani community whose networks run through the temples rather than phones. They are how the community has always run, and this guide is not going to pretend otherwise.

What the groups are good at, and what they are not

They are fast and warm: ask at nine in the evening which GP in Kralingen is still taking patients and somebody who registered last month will answer before ten. But you need to know somebody to get the link; the links that circulate are stale, and the live ones are where the "flat, pay the deposit first" scams start. A group of 800 people has no moderator, so the same three questions are asked every week and the answers scroll away. Every member can see your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: the flat in The Hague and the garba in Amstelveen arrive with the same weight as the one in Capelle.

What Namaste Community does instead

Your first week in the app

1. Install it, sign in, set your location to Rotterdam and the radius to 10 km. Get the app for iPhone or Android.
2. Join the general Rotterdam group and the one for your language or interest. Read before you post.
3. RSVP to one event in the next fortnight — a Sunday at the Shri Ram Mandir, a cricket practice, the Divali festival.
4. Ask the question you actually have, and say which side of the river you are on.
5. When you have found your flat, your GP and your toko, leave a review or an answer for the next person from Chennai or Kolkata.

Schools and childcare

The Rotterdam International Secondary School (RISS, part of the Wolfert schools; junior campus Bentincklaan 294, senior campus Schimmelpenninckstraat 23) is Dutch-subsidised and IB; the Nord Anglia International School Rotterdam (the former American International School, Verhulstlaan 21, Hillegersberg) is private; entry-year waiting lists at both commonly run six to twelve months, so apply the day you have a contract. The municipality publishes the full list. The free Dutch schools take children from four with newcomer language classes and are where most Indian families who stay end up; there is no Indian-curriculum school, and Hindi and Sarnami classes run through the Hindustani organisations and private tutors. Daycare is private and subsidised through the childcare allowance (up to 96% of €11.23 an hour in 2026 for incomes to about €56,000); register in pregnancy.

Health

Basic insurance within four months (about €159 a month, €385 deductible); a GP as soon as you have an address; the TB test at the GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond within three months; Erasmus MC, the largest university hospital in the country, and the Maasstad, Franciscus and Ikazia hospitals. Hindustani and South Asian neighbours

Rotterdam is, with The Hague, where the Surinamese-Hindustani community is strongest — the Sarnami-speaking families of Zuid who built the temples, run the roti shops and organise APNA's Divali — and an Indian newcomer inherits a century of their work. The city's Pakistani community has its own mosques and the Royal Punjab cricket club; Sri Lankan Tamils, Bangladeshis and Nepalis are present in smaller numbers.
