Indians in Rotterdam: the 2026 guide to the port city, the oldest temple in the Netherlands and the community

Rotterdam is a city of just over 673,000 people (1 January 2026) rebuilt from nothing after 1940 into the most modern skyline in the Netherlands, around the largest port in Europe. More than half its residents have at least one parent born abroad and 180 nationalities live here. The Surinamese-origin community of nearly 52,000 is the largest migrant-background group, and its Hindustani part built the mandirs of Rotterdam-Zuid and the Shri Shiv Mandir on Nozemanstraat — founded in 1980 by the Harinarain family in a basement in Rotterdam-West, forty-six years old in 2026 and the oldest Hindu temple in the country. Alongside them are 4,548 residents of Indian background (plus 680 in Capelle aan den IJssel) who came for the port and its logistics firms, Erasmus MC and the university, Unilever, Shell's Pernis refinery, the consultancies and the Randstad's IT jobs — a smaller expat community than Amsterdam's or Eindhoven's, and a cheaper city to live in than either — and the second-largest Pakistani community in the Netherlands (4,773 people in 2019), with two mosques of its own.

Rotterdam is split by the Maas: the rebuilt centre and the nineteenth-century districts north of the river, the docklands and the Hindustani districts of Zuid south of it, and the suburbs of Capelle, Hillegersberg and Nesselande on the edges. The Pararius average for a new free-sector tenant was €22.79 per square metre in the second quarter of 2026 (up 7.8%, rising faster than anywhere but Eindhoven); Kamer.nl puts the 2026 average at €24.61 per square metre; Numbeo's September 2026 contributors give a one-bedroom at €1,677 in the centre and €1,361 outside, a three-bedroom at €2,789 and €2,030. Rekenmaat's indicative 2026 free-sector rents by size for Rotterdam are €1,050 for up to 65 m², €1,500 for 65–100 m² and €2,200 above 100 m², up 3.8% on the year.

Renting in Rotterdam

The rules are national — a two-month deposit cap, no agency fees, permanent contracts, the points system that caps regulated rents at €1,228.07 for 2026 and the Huurcommissie, registration as a right and a duty — and are in the Netherlands guide. Rotterdam's market is softer than Amsterdam's and tightening; a family three-bedroom in Prinsenland or Capelle runs €1,800–2,300, and at €4,500–4,800 per square metre the city is the easiest of the big five to buy in — a 90 m² flat in Noord costs what a 60 m² one does in Amsterdam. Check two local things before signing: which parking zone the street is in (the tariffs differ fourfold between the centre and the rest), and which huisartsenpost — Noord or Zuid — you would use, because the river decides it.

The Center's website is in English and current, and its "living in or outside Rotterdam" pages are the best introduction to the suburbs. Two things newcomers get wrong: the five-day clock runs from arrival, not from finding a permanent flat — register at the temporary address and change it later; and a birth certificate that is apostilled but in Hindi or Marathi needs a sworn translation, so have it done in India in English before you fly.

Work

Rotterdam's economy is the port — Europe's largest, with the terminal operators, the shipping lines, the logistics and commodity firms (Vopak, Van Oord, Vitol) and the Port Authority — plus Erasmus MC (the largest university hospital in the country) and Erasmus University, Unilever's research and headquarters functions, Shell Pernis (the largest refinery in Europe), Robeco and the financial firms, Coolblue and the e-commerce warehouses, and the consultancies and IT services firms serving them. Indian knowledge migrants here are in port IT and logistics, chemical and process engineering, medicine and research, and the Randstad's software jobs. The 2026 knowledge-migrant thresholds — €5,942 gross a month from age 30, €4,357 under 30, €3,122 for recent graduates and the orientation year, the EU Blue Card at €5,942 — the 30% ruling and the search period are national and in the Netherlands guide; IND fees rose 4.4% on 1 January 2026. English is the working language of the port and the university; Dutch is needed in the hospital's wards and the schools.

Getting around: RET in 2026

RET runs the metro (five lines, including the A and C lines to Capelle and line E, the RandstadRail to The Hague), the trams, the buses and the water bus, all checked in and out with a bank card or OV-chipkaart. RET charges a boarding fare plus a per-kilometre rate on the same regional fare family as HTM, with 34% off for eligible personal cards; RET's fares page does not print the exact 2026 amounts, so check the price of a trip in the RET app before assuming it matches The Hague's €1.16 plus €0.201 per kilometre. What RET does publish is Regio Vrij, the unlimited monthly pass for a chosen set of zones: €63 a month for the smallest sets (a single zone pair such as the Hague or Voorne combinations) up to €203 for the widest Rotterdam sets, and €42–134 reduced — the pass that makes sense for anyone commuting daily across the city or from Capelle. If you also use the train, NS fares rose 6.52% on 1 January 2026, the Weekend Voordeel and Altijd Voordeel subscriptions were withdrawn during 2026, and an OV-fiets rental bike at any station costs €4.80 per 24 hours.

Stations and airports

Rotterdam Centraal has The Hague in 25 minutes, Utrecht in 40, Amsterdam in 40 by high-speed train and Schiphol in 25, and the Eurostar to Paris and London. Rotterdam The Hague Airport, for European flights, is metro line E to Meijersplein and RET bus 33 for the last five minutes — about 30 minutes in all — or bus 33 direct from Centraal; Schiphol has the KLM nonstops to India. The city is flat and cycle-friendly across the Erasmus bridge; the water taxi is the fun way over the river.

The car, 2026

A car is easier here than in Amsterdam, but the centre is priced to keep it out. Street parking costs €6.42 an hour in the Centrum, €3.20 on the Centrumring and €2.24 an hour in every other paid area; a "Stop & Shop" tariff gives the first thirty minutes for €0.20 outside the centre, and "Stop & Sport" gives three hours at €1.60 (ring) or €1.12 (elsewhere) at sports parks. Residents can buy a week card for €154.32 (all zones) or €77.16 (excluding the centre) and a month card for €617.28 or €308.64. Resident permits are priced by zone and are available without Amsterdam's waiting lists; the municipality's parkeervergunning page has the 2026 tariff (secondary sites put the first permit a little above €100 a year — take the official figure), and a visitors' permit is free to obtain and charged per unit of time used. An Indian licence cannot be exchanged unless you hold the 30% ruling; the rule is in the Netherlands guide.

Addresses were checked in September 2026; hours change, so look before you go, and treat these as pointers rather than endorsements — the live directory beneath this section is where the community rates them.

Groceries

• Indian Food Store Sardar Ji (Remon Afro Asian Market), West-Kruiskade 87 (+31 10 414 0955; Mon–Thu 10–19, Fri 10–20, Sun 12–18) — twenty-five years on the street: atta, jaggery, puffed rice, paneer, TRS spices, fresh gulab jamun, barfi and jalebi, plus Surinamese and Caribbean lines.
• Pak Eastern Food, 1e Middellandstraat 56, a side street off the West-Kruiskade (010 436 67 89) — the widest Indian and Pakistani range in the city, with Surinamese and Caribbean shelves.
• Amazing Oriental, West-Kruiskade 28 (010 760 21 00, open daily) — the large Asian supermarket with Indian lines; Wah Nam Hong, West-Kruiskade 4–6, a few doors down, for rice, lentils and coconut milk. Several other Chinatown tokos on the street closed in recent years, so do not trust an old list.
• Highway Tropische Supermarkt, Dordtselaan 167, Tarwewijk, Rotterdam-Zuid (010 484 93 61) — Surinamese and Indian kitchen, 1,500-plus items including mithai and snacks; a second branch at IJsselstraat 1–9 in Spijkenisse.
• Toko Hoi Yun, Benthuizerstraat 52, Oude Noorden (010 467 03 29) — Surinamese and tropical groceries at this address since 1999; Mon 11:00–18:30, Tue–Thu and Sat 09:00–18:30, Fri to 19:30, closed Sunday.
• The tokos and roti shops of Zuid around the Putselaan and the Afrikaanderplein — the Hindustani community's own, with fresh vegetables, masalas and sweets.
• Albert Heijn and Jumbo for basics; the Markthal and the Afrikaandermarkt (Wednesdays and Saturdays, the largest in the south) for vegetables and mangoes; Dookan and the Amstelveen supermarkets deliver.

Restaurants

Every kitchen has a full vegetarian menu; halal meat is everywhere in the west and Zuid. Ratings move — in September 2026 TheFork's users had Curry Heaven at 9.4, Garam Masala at 9.3 and Curry House at 9.0 — but a rating is a snapshot, and the directory below is where members leave the reviews that stay.

The Hindoe Raad Nederland lists eight mandirs in Rotterdam — the richest set of Hindustani temples in the country after The Hague — spread across the west, the north and Zuid. Most are Sanatan Dharm or Arya Samaj temples built by the Hindustani community, where the liturgy is in Hindi and Sarnami and a newcomer from India is welcome on any Sunday. Hours below are what the temples published in September 2026; two sites were down when we checked, so ring before a first visit.

The gurdwara

Gurdwara Shri Guru Nanak Dev, Ottergracht 6, Kralingse Veer (+31 10 442 2075) — langar and Sunday diwan; Sikhs in Holland lists its current contacts. It is the only gurdwara in the city; Guru Nanak Jayanti in November is the big day.

The Pakistani mosques

• Pakistan Islamic Centre Rotterdam (PICR) — Jami Masjid Al-Qurtaba, 's-Gravendijkwal 46, 3014 ED, Middelland, near the West-Kruiskade: a building found in 1983 and bought with money raised in the Pakistani community, and now a full institution — a Pakistan Urdu School, an online Quran academy, the Al-Qurtaba weekend Arabic school, the Jamia Mohammadia, the Iqbal Library and a funeral committee; 010 436 15 97, info@picr.nl.
• Masjid Ghausia, Boudewijnstraat 57, 3073 ZA, Bloemhof, Rotterdam-Zuid: a Pakistani mosque with lectures in Urdu, Dutch and Arabic, Quran (tajweed), Islamic studies and Urdu reading and writing classes, daily Quran lessons from 16:30, a weekend youth programme and funeral services; 010 484 51 49.
• The Surinamese-Hindustani Muslim community has its own mosques in Zuid; we did not verify their addresses for this edition — ask in the groups or use moskeelijst.nl. Every mosque in the city welcomes South Asian Muslims for Eid.

The Hindu primary school

The Shri Saraswatieschool at Schiedamseweg 282, 3025 AS, in Bospolder-Tussendijken (west, not Zuid) is a state-funded Dutch primary school on a Hindu foundation, run by Stichting Hindoe Onderwijs Nederland, with Hindu principles in the curriculum and its own Ganga Mandir; the first stone of its new building was laid in May 2022, and it has been voted the best school in Zuid-Holland and a "Klassewerkplek" employer; 010 477 94 94. It is open to every child and is an ordinary Dutch school in every other respect.

The temples, the gurdwara and the mosques, with their addresses and hours, have their own section above. This one is about who organises what, and when in 2026.

APNA

Stichting APNA — the Hindustani welfare and cultural foundation, founded 1996, office at Hilledijk 259 in Hillesluis, with a childcare arm (Apna KDV) and a place on the Platform Religieus Erfgoed Zuid-Holland since 2021 — runs the city's Hindustani year almost single-handed. Its Divali at de Doelen had run for eleven years by 2015, so since about 2004. The 2026 programme:

The other associations

• DesiYUP, a cultural platform since 2011, organises the Eindeloos India Festival with de Doelen — see below.
• Utsab, the Bengali association (registered in The Hague at Van Vlotenstraat 18), holds its Durga Puja at Villa Festa in Capelle plus Saraswati Puja, Poila Boishakh, Holi and Bijoya Sammilani.
• The Indian Association at Erasmus University Rotterdam (theindianassociation.eur@gmail.com) is the students' side; the port's Indian professional networks are the corporate one.
• Netherlands Tamil Sangam runs Tamil-language, Bharatanatyam and silambam classes in Rotterdam, one of its six locations.
• Bollywood Dansschool Indian Passion teaches Bollywood dance in the city (Facebook only; ask for the current venue). The municipality's list of weekend heritage-language schools has Japanese, Chinese, Russian and Polish but no Hindi, Tamil, Urdu or Bengali school — those classes run through APNA, the Tamil Sangam, PICR's Pakistan Urdu School and private tutors.
• Cricket: VOC Rotterdam (Hazelaarweg 7, Schiebroek), Excelsior '20 in Schiedam (Parkweg 415 — decades in the Dutch top flight) and SV Royal Punjab in Ridderkerk (Kievitsweg 153), all majority South Asian and recruiting.

The festival year, 2026

Dates are on the festival calendar. Rotterdam's: - Holi: APNA's Holi Colour Sensation on Saturday 7 March 2026, 15:00–21:00, in the Zuiderpark next to Ahoy, free, after the Holika burning at Spartapark-Oost on Monday 2 March; the mandirs keep Phagwa the same week. - Eindeloos India Festival at de Doelen — an annual autumn festival of Indian classical and popular music, four editions to 2026: the fourth was on Saturday 26 September 2026, 14:30–22:00, across the Jurriaanse Zaal, the foyer and the Van Capellenzaal, with sarod player Debasmita Bhattacharya (17:00–18:30) and vocalist Maithili Thakur (19:30–21:00), a meet-and-greet and vegetarian-only food from Baramaribo and Anjappar; one €35.50–60.50 ticket covered the whole programme and it sold out. The 2025 edition (1 November) had Ankita Joshi and Vidya Vox; the 2023 edition marked 150 years of Hindustani immigration. - Onam with the Malayalee associations in September. - Navratri and Durga Puja: the temples keep Navratri; Utsab's Durga Puja at Villa Festa, Rivium Boulevard 156, Capelle aan den IJssel, 18–21 October 2026. - Diwali: the APNA Divali Family Festival at de Doelen on Sunday 25 October 2026, 13:00–23:00 (€10.50–40), the Divali City Dinner there on Monday 26 October, and Lakshmi puja at the mandirs on Diwali itself, Sunday 8 November 2026 — note that Audarya Dhaam reopens only on 31 October after repairs. - Guru Nanak Jayanti at the gurdwara in November. Two budgets

A single knowledge migrant in a one-bedroom in Noord or Delfshaven spends roughly €2,400–2,700 a month all-in, once the €381.90 waste tax and the €319.10 sewer charge are spread over the year (about €60 a month; the OZB falls on the landlord). A couple in Kralingen spends about €3,500 — the €1,700–2,100 rents there are the reason many choose Noord instead. A family of four in a house in Prinsenland, Nesselande or Capelle spends about €5,500–6,200 before international-school fees; RISS keeps those to roughly €700–830 a month per child, where Nord Anglia adds €1,700–2,050 a month per child plus the one-offs set out in the schools section. Rotterdam is the easiest of the big five to buy in, and many families do within three years.

Salaries are not indexed automatically as in Belgium and Luxembourg, but the 8% holiday allowance is a legal floor, a thirteenth month is common in IT and finance, and the 30% ruling — 30% of salary tax-free in 2026, 27% from 2027 — is what makes the first five years' arithmetic work. Compare offers on net-of-tax terms and ask whether the employer grosses up.

Energy and water

The Dutch energy market is open: you choose an electricity and gas supplier on a comparison site (Independer, Gaslicht) and can switch yearly; the grid operator that owns the meters and handles connections and moves is Stedin. Water is a regional monopoly with no contract to shop for — Evides here; notify the move-in date and the meter reading. Most flats are gas-heated with a combi boiler; new-build in Nesselande and on the Kop van Zuid is increasingly all-electric or on district heating, which shows up as a higher electricity or heat bill and no gas bill. Set up the smart-meter app on day one — Dutch winters are billed monthly on an estimate and settled once a year, and a wrong estimate is a nasty April surprise.

Waste, and the municipal taxes for 2026

Rotterdam collects residual waste in underground containers opened with a pass, with separate containers for paper, glass and PMD and a growing GFT network; bulky waste is collected by appointment; the suburbs of Capelle and Nesselande use wheeled bins on a calendar; the municipality's app knows the collection days for your street. The bills that follow registration, all from the 2026 budget:

The water board (Hollandse Delta south of the river, Schieland en de Krimpenerwaard north of it) bills separately for purification and the water system; the amount depends on which side of the Maas you live.

Phones and internet

KPN, Odido and VodafoneZiggo are the networks; SIMs are sold with ID at any supermarket and registered in minutes; a 10 GB plan is about €15–20 a month and fibre or cable internet €40–55. The country code is +31; mobiles start with 06.

Parking and the car, 2026

The centre is priced against the car: €6.42 an hour in the Centrum, €3.20 on the Centrumring, €2.24 an hour in every other paid area, with the first thirty minutes for €0.20 at "Stop & Shop" bays outside the centre and three hours for €1.60 or €1.12 at sports parks. Residents can buy a week card (€154.32 for all zones, €77.16 excluding the centre) or a month card (€617.28 or €308.64), and a resident permit priced by zone — check the municipality's parkeervergunning page for the 2026 figure rather than a secondary site; the visitors' permit is free to obtain and charged per unit of time. The Coolsingel area is a low-emission zone. The metro, the trams and the water taxi make a car optional in the city; the suburbs have driveways. An Indian licence is valid for 185 days after registration and cannot be exchanged unless you hold the 30% ruling — the rule is in the Netherlands guide. Most Indian families in the cities manage without a car in the first year; car-share (Greenwheels, MyWheels) and the €4.80-a-day OV-fiets cover the weekend.

The weather and the calendar

Maritime and mild: an annual mean around 10–11 °C, rain and wind in every month, short winter days, a heatwave or two in summer; a good rain jacket beats an umbrella on a bicycle, and Dutch GPs prescribe vitamin D to almost every newcomer from India. Few public holidays — King's Day on 27 April is the one the whole country celebrates in orange — and shops open on Sundays in the cities. The Erasmus bridge and the Maas are the city's identity; the Rotterdamse Dakendagen, the Summer Carnival and the North Sea Jazz festival fill the summer; APNA's Holi fills the Zuiderpark in March, Eindeloos India fills de Doelen in the autumn and APNA's Divali fills it again in October.

The national system — free Dutch schools from four, the split at twelve, international schools the state part-funds, childcare that is private and subsidised through the kinderopvangtoeslag — is in the Netherlands guide. Rotterdam has one subsidised and one private international school, and the gap between them is the biggest line in a family budget.

International schools, 2026–27

Entry-year waiting lists at both commonly run six to twelve months, so apply the day you have a contract. RISS begins at Grade 6, so for the primary years the choice is Nord Anglia, a Dutch primary (free, with newcomer classes) or one of the subsidised international primary departments the municipality lists on its international-schools page — which also covers The Hague's schools, 25 minutes away.

Dutch schools, the Hindu primary school and heritage languages

The free Dutch schools take children from four with newcomer language classes and are where most Indian families who stay end up. There is no Indian-curriculum school, but the Shri Saraswatieschool at Schiedamseweg 282 in Bospolder-Tussendijken is a state-funded primary on a Hindu foundation with Hindu principles in the curriculum, a new building since 2022 and a reputation as one of the best schools in the province — open to every child and free like any Dutch school. For heritage languages, the municipality's list of Saturday schools has none for Hindi, Tamil, Urdu or Bengali; the routes are APNA (Sarnami and Hindustani culture), the Netherlands Tamil Sangam's Rotterdam classes (Tamil, Bharatanatyam, silambam), the Pakistan Urdu School at PICR on 's-Gravendijkwal, Masjid Ghausia's Urdu reading and writing classes, and private tutors found through the groups. Childcare, 2026

Daycare is private and subsidised through the childcare allowance, which in 2026 reimburses up to 96% of a maximum €11.23 an hour for daycare (KDV) and €9.98 for after-school care (BSO) for household incomes to about €56,000, on a sliding scale above that; anything a provider charges above the maximum is yours. KindeRdam, the largest Rotterdam provider, publishes its 2026 rates only per location in "PakketWijzer" PDFs, so there is no single city figure — expect the same €11–13 an hour band as The Hague's 2Samen, and ask for the PDF of the location you want. Apna KDV is the Hindustani community's own daycare. Register in pregnancy; Kralingen, Hillegersberg and Nesselande have the longest lists. Children's check-ups and vaccinations run through the consultatiebureau (Centrum voor Jeugd en Gezin) you are assigned at registration.

The rules — basic insurance within four months (about €159 a month in 2026, €385 deductible, children free), the GP as the gatekeeper, the TB test at the GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond within three months — are in the Netherlands guide. Rotterdam's capacity sits between Eindhoven's and The Hague's: the Court of Audit's 2025 report found patient stops most frequent in Haaglanden and Zuid-Holland-Zuid (three-quarters of practices in a year), with Rotterdam-Rijnmond in between, and Zorgkaart lists 276 GPs in 169 practices for a city of 673,000.

Finding a GP

Ring practices in your postcode the day you have an address — a practice takes you only if you live inside its area — and use the Rotterdam International Center's list and your insurer's placement line (zorgbemiddeling) if the first few say no. Ask in the groups which practice in your wijk opened its list this month; that is the question they answer best.

Out of hours: the river decides

Evenings, nights and weekends are the Huisartsenposten Rijnmond, and Rotterdam has two — ring first, they triage and give you a time: - Rotterdam Zuid: Maasstadweg 59a, inside the Maasstad Ziekenhuis, Groot-IJsselmonde; +31 10 290 98 88; 17:00–08:00 on weekdays, round the clock at weekends. - Rotterdam Noord: Kleiweg 500, at the Franciscus Gasthuis, Schiebroek; +31 10 466 95 73; the same hours. - Other posts serve Spijkenisse and the IJsselland hospital in Capelle. The night pharmacies (dienstapotheken) sit beside them: Rotterdam Noord at Kleiweg 500 (010 461 78 78) and Rotterdam Zuid at Maasstadweg 59b (010 486 63 28), prescription required. Life-threatening emergencies are 112, as everywhere in Europe.

Hospitals

Erasmus MC, the largest university hospital in the country, in the centre; Maasstad Ziekenhuis at Maasstadweg 21 in Groot-IJsselmonde (the burns centre, cardiac and neurosurgery); Franciscus Gasthuis on the Kleiweg in the north; Ikazia at Montessoriweg 1 in Zuid (Protestant-Christian foundation, open to all); and the IJsselland hospital in Capelle. The GGD Rotterdam-Rijnmond does the TB test for everyone from India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh (Sri Lankans are exempt).

What people wish they had known

• The GP is the bottleneck, not the permit: start ringing practices the day you have a postcode, and use the Center's list.
• "No registration" flats are illegal and common; walk away, however good the flat.
• The 30% ruling is negotiated, not automatic: ask in the offer, and ask whether the employer grosses up.
• The Dutch school split at twelve decides more than any international school does; understand it before your child is ten — and know that RISS starts at Grade 6, so the primary years are Dutch or private.
• Parking in the centre is €6.42 an hour and the permit is priced by zone; a flat in Noord with a permit beats a flat on the Coolsingel without one.
• The municipal bills are real money: about €700 a year for a tenant household in waste and sewer charges in 2026, on top of rent.
• The groups know first — which grocer has curry leaves this week, which crèche has a place, which GP opened its list. Prinsenland, Nesselande and Capelle are where families buy.

Every Indian who has moved abroad has the same first move: find the WhatsApp group. Rotterdam has them — "Indians in Rotterdam", the Erasmus and port groups, the Telugu, Tamil and Malayali ones, the Capelle parents, the cricket groups — and, as in The Hague, a Hindustani community whose networks run through the temples and APNA rather than phones. They are how the community has always run, and this guide is not going to pretend otherwise.

What the groups are good at, and what they are not

They are fast and warm: ask at nine in the evening which GP in Kralingen is still taking patients and somebody who registered last month will answer before ten. But you need to know somebody to get the link; the links that circulate are stale, and the live ones are where the "flat, pay the deposit first" scams start. A group of 800 people has no moderator, so the same three questions are asked every week and the answers scroll away. Every member can see your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: the flat in The Hague and the garba in Amstelveen arrive with the same weight as the one in Capelle.

What Namaste Community does instead

Namaste Community is a free app, built in the Benelux by members of this community, that keeps what the groups do well and fixes the rest. It launched in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and works in every country — so it is also the answer when the port moves you to Antwerp or Hamburg.

• Everything is ranked by distance from you — events, groups, questions, businesses and things for sale, within 10, 50, 100 or 200 km, your choice — so a Rotterdam member sees Rotterdam and Capelle first and The Hague second.
• Groups with a place and a moderator, joined by people within their radius, with polls, join modes and a member limit; your phone number is never shown, and you can post under your name or an anonymous handle.
• Ask, and the answer stays: the question about the 30% ruling, the RISS waiting list or a GP taking patients is answered once, in a thread the next person finds.
• A directory with reviews of grocers, restaurants, tailors, tutors, accountants and driving schools, listed free by the businesses themselves — and the place to post a temple's changed hours.

Your first week in the app

1. Install it, sign in, set your location to Rotterdam and the radius to 10 km. Get the app for iPhone or Android.
2. Join the general Rotterdam group and the one for your language or interest. Read before you post.
3. RSVP to one event in the next fortnight — a Sunday at the Shri Ram Mandir, a cricket practice, the Divali festival.
4. Ask the question you actually have, and say which side of the river you are on.
5. When you have found your flat, your GP and your toko, leave a review or an answer for the next person from Chennai or Kolkata.

An Indian newcomer to Rotterdam inherits a city that other South Asians built first, and it is worth knowing who they are.

The Surinamese-Hindustani community

Rotterdam is, with The Hague, where the Surinamese-Hindustani community is strongest: the Sarnami-speaking families of Zuid and the west who built the eight mandirs from a basement on Nozemanstraat in 1980 onwards, who founded APNA in 1996 and the Shri Saraswatieschool, who run the roti shops and Highway supermarket, and whose Divali has filled de Doelen since about 2004. Their ancestors left Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for Suriname as indentured labourers from 1873 and came to the Netherlands around 1975; APNA's UNESCO symposium on 13 June 2026 was about keeping Sarnami alive as a language. A newcomer from India will find the liturgy familiar and the surnames unfamiliar; the courtesy that goes furthest is to treat the community as hosts, not as a diaspora of India — and to turn up at APNA's Holi and Divali, which are built for exactly that.

Pakistani

Rotterdam's Pakistani community — 4,773 people in 2019 — is the second largest in the Netherlands after Amsterdam's (5,817; The Hague 3,612; 25,050 nationally in 2020, up from 14,127 in 1996). It has built two institutions: the Pakistan Islamic Centre — Jami Masjid Al-Qurtaba on 's-Gravendijkwal, since 1983, with its Urdu school, library and funeral committee, and Masjid Ghausia in Bloemhof, with Urdu classes and a youth programme. Pak Eastern Food off the West-Kruiskade is the grocer; Zainab Roshni Mahal on the Nieuwe Binnenweg (since 1999) and Naansense in Capelle are the kitchens; the Royal Punjab cricket club in Ridderkerk is shared with Indian Punjabis; Foundation PIN — Pakistanis in the Netherlands — is the community hub for the three big cities. Sri Lankan Tamil

The Netherlands Tamil Sangam, headquartered in The Hague, runs Tamil-language, Bharatanatyam and silambam classes in Rotterdam. Sri Lankans are the one South Asian group exempt from the TB test; the Embassy of Sri Lanka is in The Hague.

Bangladeshi and Nepali

Bangladeshi Bengalis share Utsab's Durga Puja in Capelle and its Poila Boishakh, and Friends of Bangladesh's national events; Namaste Nepali & Indian on the Oudedijk is the Nepali kitchen, and the Nepali associations — NRNA NCC Netherlands (2006) and Nepal Samaj Netherland — are national and based in The Hague. The Embassy of Bangladesh is in The Hague; Nepal's embassy for the Benelux is in Brussels.

The Embassy of India is at Oranjestraat 12, The Hague — 25 minutes by train; passports are submitted at the embassy itself and OCI through VFS Global (Parkstraat 99, The Hague, or Radarweg, Amsterdam); its Gandhi Centre, with free yoga, Hindi and tabla classes, is at Parkstraat 99 in The Hague.
