Indians in Utrecht: the 2026 guide to the city in the middle, Leidsche Rijn, the temples and the community

Utrecht is a city of 378,278 people (1 January 2026) — the fourth largest in the Netherlands and expected to pass 400,000 by 2030 — built around a medieval canal centre, the Dom tower, the largest university in the country (38,000 students and 8,800 staff) and the busiest railway station in it. Its location is its selling point: Amsterdam in 27 minutes, The Hague and Rotterdam in 40, Eindhoven in 50, Schiphol in 30, and every train line in the Netherlands passing through. The Indian community is mid-sized and growing at a steady clip — 5,098 residents of Indian background in the city and 1,856 in Nieuwegein, with about 650 Indian arrivals a year from 2017 to 2024 and 365 in 2025 — and it works at Rabobank's headquarters, NS and ProRail, the UMC Utrecht hospital and the university, ASR, Capgemini and the software firms of the Papendorp business park, and in the Randstad's IT jobs a train ride away. It lives, overwhelmingly, in Leidsche Rijn, the Vinex district west of the canal — about 45,000 residents in Leidsche Rijn proper and more than 95,000 with Vleuten-De Meern — with two stations, the International School Utrecht on its edge and the new-build houses that Amsterdam families cannot afford.

Utrecht is a compact old centre inside a ring of nineteenth-century districts, the university's Science Park to the east, and — across the Amsterdam-Rhine canal to the west — Leidsche Rijn, one of the largest new-build districts in Europe. Rents are Numbeo's August 2026 figures (one-bedroom €1,678 in the centre, €1,327 outside; three-bedroom €2,876 and €2,002) and the Pararius average of €21.61 per square metre, flat this year; the district-by-district bands are in the next section.

Renting in Utrecht

The rules are national — a two-month deposit cap, no agency fees, permanent contracts, the points system that caps regulated rents at €1,228.07 for 2026 (the social ceiling is €932.93; the middle segment runs between the two) and the Huurcommissie, registration as a right and a duty — and are in the Netherlands guide. The maximum increases from 1 July 2026 are 4.1% for social rents, 6.1% in the middle segment and 4.4% in the free sector. Utrecht's market is tight in the centre and reasonable in Leidsche Rijn, where a family three-bedroom runs €1,800–2,300 and the newer stock with good energy labels legitimately scores enough points for the free sector; the student population (the largest in the country) makes rooms scarce every September. In Overvecht, the points system would allow only about €650–800 for a typical two-room flat that is advertised at €850–1,100 — exactly the case the Huurcommissie exists for. Many Indian families buy in Leidsche Rijn, Nieuwegein or Houten within a few years.

Utrecht's headline rent barely moved in the year to mid-2026 (+0.7%, the slowest of the big five cities), but the average hides a spread of almost two to one between the canal centre and the post-war north. The bands below are for a two-room flat of 45–65 m² in the free sector, as advertised in February 2026; the listing examples are single advertisements from September 2026, useful as texture rather than as averages.

Buying

Leidsche Rijn is where most Indian families who buy end up, and it is not cheap: the average home there was valued at €713,300 in September 2026 (about €6,729 per square metre, up 5.3% on the year), across 20,364 dwellings of which half are owner-occupied. Numbeo's contributors put the citywide purchase price at about €6,292 per square metre in the centre and €4,306 outside it (August 2026). Nieuwegein and Houten — on the tram and the train respectively — give more house for the money, and the 30% ruling counts in full for a mortgage. The mechanics of buying — a mortgage of up to 100% of the valuation, the 2% transfer tax and the starters' exemption, a purchasing agent worth the fee — are in the Netherlands guide. Utrecht's property tax (OZB) is 0.0806% of the assessed value in 2026 — about €242 a year on a €300,000 home — and the national broadcaster NOS reported in 2026 that Utrecht's OZB revenue rose more than any other municipality's, so budget for the local charges in the section below.

Who is arriving

The regional broadcaster's analysis of the 2025 figures is a useful corrective to the WhatsApp sense that "everyone is Indian now": Utrecht took in about 8,000 immigrants in the year, and the largest groups came from Spain, Italy, Germany and the United States (380–470 each); Indian arrivals were 365, down from about 650 a year between 2017 and 2024, and the city's population grew by only 1,405 people in 2025 as housing ran short. The Indian community here is growing, but slowly, and it competes for the same Leidsche Rijn houses as everyone else.

Work

Utrecht's employers are the ones that need to be in the middle of the country: Rabobank's global headquarters (about 47,000 employees worldwide in 2022; the bank was formed in 1972 by merging the Utrecht-based Raiffeisen-Bank with the Eindhoven-based Boerenleenbank, both founded in 1898), NS and ProRail (the railways), ASR and the insurers, Capgemini, bol.com and the software firms of Papendorp, UMC Utrecht and Utrecht University (38,000 students, 8,800 staff, 54 bachelor's and 147 master's programmes), the Hogeschool Utrecht, and the consultancies. Indian knowledge migrants here are in banking IT, data, rail and infrastructure engineering, medicine and research — and a large number commute from Leidsche Rijn to Amsterdam's Zuidas, 27 minutes away, or to Eindhoven. The 2026 knowledge-migrant salary thresholds are national — €5,942 gross a month for those aged 30 and over, €4,357 under 30, and €3,122 for graduates of a Dutch programme or orientation-year holders, all before the 8% holiday allowance — and the 30% ruling and the search period are in the Netherlands guide. English is the working language of the bank's and the university's international teams; Dutch is needed at the hospital and in the public sector.

Trains

Utrecht Centraal is the country's rail hub: Amsterdam in 27 minutes, Schiphol in 30, The Hague and Rotterdam in 40, Eindhoven in 50, Arnhem and Den Bosch in 30, with a train somewhere every minute or two. Leidsche Rijn has its own stations — Utrecht Terwijde, Utrecht Leidsche Rijn and the relocated Vleuten — on the four-tracked line into Centraal, finished in 2018. An NS season ticket is usually employer-paid; the world's largest bicycle garage is under the station, and OV-fiets rental bikes (some 300 locations nationally, on a personal OV-chipkaart or NS Flex) wait at the other end.

U-OV buses and trams: the 2026 fares

U-OV runs the city's buses and its two tram lines — to Nieuwegein and IJsselstein, and to the Science Park — checked in with a bank card, phone or OV-chipkaart. Since 14 December 2025 the fares are capped, which makes them unusually simple:

The low-income residents' discount on U-OV rose from 40% to 70% in early 2026 — worth knowing for a partner on the search year. Numbeo's contributors quote about €120 a month for a transport pass (range €80–192), which the €100 cap now undercuts. The city is the cycling capital of a cycling country and a bike is how everyone moves; the Máximapark and the canal paths make it a pleasure. A car is useful in Leidsche Rijn and the towns and a nuisance in the centre — the permit waiting lists are in the daily-life section. Utrecht's Indian shopping used to mean one shop in Lombok and a drive to Amstelveen. Today it means two dedicated supermarkets — one in the city, one in Nieuwegein that delivers the same day — plus the online grocers, and its restaurants are among the best in the country for South Indian food. Addresses were checked in September 2026; hours change, so look before you go, and treat these as pointers rather than endorsements — the live directory beneath this section is where the community rates them.

Groceries

• Mantra Food (the Surinamese Market), Kanaalstraat 132, Lombok (+31 30 297 0950; its own site gives Mon–Fri 08:00–17:00 — ring before a weekend trip) — Indian, Surinamese and African groceries, with free pickup at the shop and delivery to Leidsche Rijn from its online store.
• Panjab Supermarket, Muntplein 10, 3437 AN Nieuwegein (+31 6 2000 9192; Mon–Sat 09:00–20:00, Sun 12:00–19:00) — more than 2,600 Indian, Pakistani and Hindustani-Surinamese products, fresh vegetables, paneer, frozen and ready meals, and same-day delivery to Nieuwegein, Utrecht, Leidsche Rijn, Vleuten, Maarssen, Zeist, Bunnik, IJsselstein, Vianen and Culemborg for €2.49, free over €49.
• SpicyTulip, an online Indian supermarket that delivers to Utrecht and Leidsche Rijn; Dookan and the Amstelveen supermarkets also deliver.
• The Kanaalstraat itself, Utrecht's multicultural shopping street: Turkish and Moroccan tokos for halal meat, pulses, rice and vegetables.
• Amstelveen (40 minutes) and Eindhoven (50) for the full Indian supermarket shop with a dozen shops to choose from.

An inexpensive meal costs about €20 and a three-course dinner for two about €72.50 (Numbeo, August 2026). The Oudegracht's wharf cellars are the city's signature dining rooms, and two of the Indian restaurants are in them.

Temples

• Shri Krishna Mandir Utrecht holds its services at the "OASE" building, Cartesiusweg 11, 3534 BA, in the west near Lombok (+31 6 2661 8770) — Sanatan Dharma, the city's own mandir. Its website no longer works and it is not on the national umbrella lists, so ring or ask in the groups for the current Sunday schedule before a first visit.
• Shri Ganesh Mandir, Mereveldlaan 2, 3454 CG, De Meern — in Leidsche Rijn, next door to the Mariakerk, run by the Stichting Shri Ganesh for the Hindustani-Surinamese Hindu community of Utrecht and open to everyone. The mandir's own site gives its regular opening as Tuesday evenings 18:00–21:00 with puja 19:00–20:00, while third-party listings give Sunday afternoons — check the mandir's site or WhatsApp 06 4290 5889 (info@stichtingshriganesh.nl) before you go. Krishna Janmashtami 2026 was celebrated there on Friday 4 September at 17:00.
• Shri Sanatan Dharm Utrecht, Achterberghove 12, 3437 ZE Nieuwegein — a Mahasabha-affiliated mandir in Nieuwegein, the second Hindustani-Surinamese temple of the area.
• ISKCON Utrecht, Niastraat 21, 3531 WR, Lombok (+31 30 266 0915) — kirtan, Gita classes, prasadam; no fixed programme is published in the directory, so message ahead.
• Arulmigu Thurgai Amman Tempel, Laan van Vollenhove 2195, 3706 GW Zeist (tcom@live.nl) — the Tamil kovil of the region, built by the Sri Lankan Tamil community settled in Zeist, and the temple for Indian Tamils too.
• Utrecht has no gurdwara; the nearest are Amsterdam's, Almere's and Geldrop's, and the Sikh community travels. The Ulu Camii on the Moskeeplein in Lombok — opened in October 2015 for 1,200 worshippers, with two 44-metre glass-brick minarets — and the Moroccan mosques of Lombok and Overvecht welcome South Asian Muslims for Eid.

The festival year

Utrecht's 2026 year: - Holi: the community Holi with the Hindustani foundations in March, and the commercial Holi Festival of Colours. - Onam with the Malayalee associations in September. - International Day of Non-Violence: The India Foundation's gathering at the Mahatma Gandhi memorial in Utrecht on Friday 2 October 2026. - Navratri and Durga Puja: three pujas within twenty minutes of each other. USUC's at ZIMIHC Theater Stefanus (Braziliëdreef 2, 3563 CK, Overvecht), 16–20 October 2026, with what the organisers describe as one of the largest Durga idols in continental Europe; Aalap's at Team Suboxer, Herenstraat 99, Nieuwegein, 17–20 October; and Ohm's at Oranje Nassaustraat 31, Benschop, 17–20 October — free, with registration so the kitchen knows the numbers. - Diwali: The India Foundation's Diwali Celebrations at ZIMIHC Theater Stefanus on Sunday 1 November 2026 — registration is open; the time and any ticket price were not yet posted in September, and previous editions ran 12:00–18:00, free, with a lamp-lighting inauguration, classical and Bollywood dance, ghazals, bhajans, qawwali, information stalls and Indian food stalls. Lakshmi puja at the mandirs falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. - Guru Nanak Jayanti at the Amsterdam and Almere gurdwaras in November. - Pongal and Sankranti in January with the Tamil and Telugu communities — the Netherlands Telugu Community's Sankranthi is the organised one. Utrecht's community life is organised by a handful of foundations rather than a single portal, so it pays to know who does what.

The Bengali pujas are the most visible community events of the year and welcome everyone; the Diwali at ZIMIHC is the one evening where the expat and Hindustani communities meet in numbers. Utrecht has no Marathi mitramandal or Tamil sangam of its own of the Eindhoven kind — the Tamil community's centre of gravity here is the Zeist temple, and the Malayali and Marathi associations of Amstelveen and Eindhoven are an hour away. If you are looking for a Hindi, Bharatanatyam or Bollywood-dance school, ask in the groups: we could not verify the addresses of the ones that advertise and have left them out.

Cricket

Two KNCB clubs, both with juniors: - SV Kampong Cricket, Sportpark Maarschalkerweerd, Mytylweg 17 — the historic club, whose ground hosts international matches. - USV Hercules, Sportpark Voordorp, Voorveldselaan 2 — the second club, on the north-east side near the Science Park. The Dutch cricket board itself, the KNCB, has its head office in Nieuwegein, alongside the volleyball, swimming and basketball federations — so the national indoor nets and the umpiring courses are on the tram line. Two budgets

A single knowledge migrant in a one-bedroom outside the centre spends roughly €2,400–2,700 a month all-in; a couple in Lombok or Oog in Al about €3,400; a family of four in a Leidsche Rijn house about €5,300–6,000 before international-school fees, and the International School Utrecht's subsidised fees (about €425 a month per child in the primary years) keep those modest. Add about €121 a month in local charges if you own a €300,000 home (waste, sewer, property tax and the water board together, 2026) — noticeably more than Eindhoven's €97, because Utrecht's waste charge is the dearest of the big cities and its water board's resident levy is nearly double Brabant's. Rents rose only 0.7% in the year to mid-2026, the slowest of the big five.

Salaries are not indexed automatically as in Belgium and Luxembourg, but the 8% holiday allowance is a legal floor, a thirteenth month is common in IT and finance, and the 30% ruling — 30% of salary tax-free in 2026, 27% from 2027 — is what makes the first five years' arithmetic work. Compare offers on net-of-tax terms and ask whether the employer grosses up.

Every Dutch household pays three layers of local charges on top of rent or mortgage, and they arrive in the spring after you register. Utrecht's are collected by BghU, the shared tax office of the city and the water board, and in 2026 they are the highest of the big cities. Tenants pay the waste charge and the two water-board household levies but not the OZB or the owner levy — still about €800 a year for a couple in 2026. Households on a low income can apply for remission. For comparison, Eindhoven's waste charge runs from €229.46 to €420.00 in 2026 and its all-in figure for the same home is about €97 a month.

How waste collection works

The Utrechtse Afvalapp gives a personal collection calendar for your address; depending on the street you have wheeled bins (kliko) or underground containers opened with a pass. Residual waste, paper, PMD (plastic, metal and drink cartons) and GFE — food waste, which Utrecht collects separately from garden waste in many districts — each have their own bin or container; glass and textiles go to street containers; bulky waste is collected by appointment through the municipality's digital counter. Leidsche Rijn's new streets use underground containers throughout. The municipal information line is 14 030 (Monday to Thursday 09:00–17:00, Friday 09:00–13:00), and it answers in English.

The energy and water connections

The Dutch energy market is open: you choose an electricity and gas supplier on a comparison site (Independer, Gaslicht) and can switch yearly; the grid operator that owns the meters and handles connections and moves is Stedin. Water is a regional monopoly with no contract to shop for — Vitens here; notify the move-in date and the meter reading. Most older flats are gas-heated with a combi boiler; new-build in Leidsche Rijn is increasingly all-electric with a heat pump, which shows up as a higher electricity bill and no gas bill. Set up the smart-meter app on day one — Dutch winters are billed monthly on an estimate and settled once a year, and a wrong estimate is a nasty April surprise. Phones and internet

KPN, Odido and VodafoneZiggo are the networks; SIMs are sold with ID at any supermarket and registered in minutes; a 10 GB plan is about €15–20 a month and fibre or cable internet €40–55 (Numbeo's 2026 average for broadband in Utrecht is €42.61). The country code is +31; mobiles start with 06. The energy, water and waste set-up is in the local-taxes section above.

Parking: the permits, the prices and the waiting lists

Utrecht is not Amsterdam, but it is not Eindhoven either: a resident permit is available in most of the city, but 39 parking areas had a waiting list on 16 September 2026, and in the popular pre-war districts the wait is long. The municipality publishes the lists: the Vogelenbuurt had 233 people waiting (the oldest since June 2025), Wittevrouwen 135, Europalaan Noord 116, and the Schildersbuurt's second-permit list 152, with its oldest entry from November 2016. Areas not on the list have no wait; you pay nothing while waiting; and the municipality says the wait cannot be predicted, though two to three years for the centre is commonly cited. Leidsche Rijn, Vleuten-De Meern and the towns mostly have driveways and free streets.

The medieval centre is largely car-free and a low-emission zone. The bicycle — the city has the world's largest bicycle garage under its station — and the trains make a car optional for most; an Indian licence is valid for 185 days after registration and cannot be exchanged unless you hold the 30% ruling — the rule is in the Netherlands guide. Most Indian families in the cities manage without a car in the first year; car-share (Greenwheels, MyWheels) covers the weekend, and a parking fine costs €77.70 plus the hour in 2026.

The weather and the calendar

Maritime and mild: an annual mean around 10–11 °C, rain and wind in every month, short winter days, a heatwave or two in summer; a good rain jacket beats an umbrella on a bicycle, and Dutch GPs prescribe vitamin D to almost every newcomer from India. Few public holidays — King's Day on 27 April is the one the whole country celebrates in orange — and shops open on Sundays in the city. The Dom tower and the wharf cellars are the city's identity; the Máximapark in Leidsche Rijn is the community's picnic ground; the student intake in September fills every room in the city, and the Diwali at ZIMIHC on 1 November 2026 is the community's own date in the calendar.

What people wish they had known

• The GP is the bottleneck, not the permit: start ringing practices the day you have a postcode, and use the International Center's list.
• The Center is closed on Mondays and online on Wednesdays. A Monday arrival means Tuesday at the earliest; book before you fly.
• "No registration" flats are illegal and common; walk away, however good the flat.
• The 30% ruling is negotiated, not automatic: ask in the offer, and ask whether the employer grosses up.
• The Dutch school split at twelve decides more than any international school does; understand it before your child is ten.
• The ISU is moving in August 2027. A Papendorp address that suits Leidsche Rijn today becomes a cross-city commute to the Science Park; families with children entering in 2026 should plan for both.
• The groups know first — which grocer has curry leaves this week, which crèche has a place, which GP opened its list. Leidsche Rijn, Nieuwegein and Houten are where families buy.

Utrecht is a university city that speaks English to its students and Dutch to everyone else, and the line between the two runs through the school gate, the GP's front desk and the crèche. You can work at Rabobank, the UMC's research floors or Papendorp in English for years; you cannot deal with a Leidsche Rijn primary school or a Dutch neighbour in it for long, and civic integration — not required of knowledge migrants — is the road to permanent residence (A2) and nationality later.

• Utrecht University's language centre teaches Dutch as a second language to staff, students and outsiders from beginner to academic level, and the Hogeschool Utrecht runs its own courses.
• The public library on the Neude and its branches in Leidsche Rijn and Overvecht run free conversation tables (taalcafé) and language buddies through the city's volunteer organisations — the fastest route to the sounds and the friendliest.
• Private schools in the centre and Leidsche Rijn run evening and intensive courses; employers in the bank and the hospital often fund them.
• The municipality's integration programme (inburgering) is compulsory only for those who settle through family reunification with a Dutch or permanent resident, and voluntary for everyone else; its B1 route is the serious option for a partner who wants to work in a Dutch-language job.
• The International Center's "Work in NL" information point and job portal are aimed at migrant workers but answer partners' questions about recognition of Indian degrees and where a Dutch qualification is needed.

Indian speakers of Hindi, Punjabi or Bengali find Dutch pronunciation easier than French and the word order a year's work; children in the Dutch schools are fluent within one. The Hindustani-Surinamese community's Sarnami Hindustani is close enough to Bhojpuri and Hindi that a conversation at the Ganesh Mandir or the roti shop works in a mix of three languages — a small, real advantage Indians have over other newcomers here. A2 Dutch is the civic-integration level for permanent residence and, today, for naturalisation.

Every Indian who has moved abroad has the same first move: find the WhatsApp group. Utrecht has them — "Indians in Utrecht", the Leidsche Rijn parents, the Rabobank and UMC groups, the Telugu, Tamil, Malayali and Bengali ones, the Nieuwegein group, the cricket groups — and they are how the community has always run. This guide is not going to pretend otherwise.

What the groups are good at, and what they are not

They are fast and warm: ask at nine in the evening which GP in Terwijde is still taking patients and somebody who registered last month will answer before ten. But you need to know somebody to get the link; the links that circulate are stale, and the live ones are where the "flat, pay the deposit first" scams start. A group of 800 people has no moderator, so the same three questions are asked every week and the answers scroll away — which is how the Ganesh Mandir's opening hours and the ISU's moving date circulate in three contradictory versions. Every member can see your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: the flat in Amersfoort and the garba in Amstelveen arrive with the same weight as the one in Vleuten.

What Namaste Community does instead

Namaste Community is a free app, built in the Benelux by members of this community, that keeps what the groups do well and fixes the rest. It launched in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and works in every country.

• Everything is ranked by distance from you — events, groups, questions, businesses and things for sale, within 10, 50, 100 or 200 km, your choice — which from Utrecht, in the middle of the country, means most of the Netherlands at 50 km.
• Groups with a place and a moderator, joined by people within their radius, with polls, join modes and a member limit; your phone number is never shown, and you can post under your name or an anonymous handle.

Your first week in the app

1. Install it, sign in, set your location to Utrecht and the radius to 10 km. Get the app for iPhone or Android.
2. Join the general Utrecht group and the one for your language or interest. Read before you post.
3. RSVP to one event in the next fortnight — an evening at the Ganesh Mandir in De Meern, a cricket practice at Kampong, a Durga Puja evening.
4. Ask the question you actually have, and say whether you are in the city, Leidsche Rijn or Nieuwegein.
5. When you have found your house, your GP and your grocer, leave a review or an answer for the next family from Pune or Hyderabad.

The International School Utrecht, and its 2027 move

The International School Utrecht (ISU) is Dutch-subsidised and IB, with about 1,100 students aged 4–18 from more than 60 nationalities. It is currently at Van Deventerlaan 1, 3528 AG, in Papendorp on the edge of Leidsche Rijn, and moves to a purpose-built campus at Cambridgelaan 101 on the Utrecht Science Park in August 2027 — the opposite side of the city, which matters for a family choosing where to live in 2026. The free Dutch schools take children from four with newcomer language classes, and Leidsche Rijn's new schools are among the best-equipped in the country; there is no Indian-curriculum school, and Hindi and regional-language classes run through the associations and private tutors — ask in the groups, because we could not verify the schools that advertise. For older students, Utrecht University has 38,000 students and 54 bachelor's and 147 master's programmes; the orientation year and the reduced salary threshold that follow are in the Netherlands guide.

Childcare

Daycare is private and subsidised through the national childcare allowance: in 2026 the maximum reimbursable rates are €11.23 an hour for daycare, €9.98 for after-school care and €8.49 for a registered childminder, with 96% reimbursed for household incomes up to about €56,000 and a sliding scale down to 36.5% (first child) and 68.2% (later children) above €235,698. Numbeo's contributors put a full-day private preschool place in Utrecht at about €2,737 a month before the allowance. Leidsche Rijn's crèches have waiting lists — register in pregnancy.

GPs

Utrecht's practices describe themselves as "busy": many keep their own waiting lists, switching GP is often not possible straight away, and registration is easier in Leidsche Rijn and the new districts than in the centre. Zorgkaart Nederland lists 171 GPs in the city, without saying who is open. Ring the day you have a postcode, ask the International Center for its list, and ask in the groups which practice opened its books this month. Basic insurance is due within four months (about €159 a month, €385 deductible); the TB test is at the GGD regio Utrecht within three. The rules are in the Netherlands guide.

Hospitals and out-of-hours care

Everything else about health — the deductible, the GP as gatekeeper, pregnancy and the consultatiebureau — is national. The other city guides: Amsterdam, Amstelveen, The Hague, Eindhoven, Rotterdam.

Utrecht's Indian community is expat first — Telugu, Tamil, Malayali, Marathi, Bengali, Punjabi — but the South Asian life of the city is older and broader than the Leidsche Rijn intake, and everything on this page about registering, renting, GPs, taxes and transport applies identically to every non-EU newcomer.

• Hindustani-Surinamese neighbours are the community that built the temples. The Shri Ganesh Mandir in De Meern and the Shri Sanatan Dharm mandir in Nieuwegein are theirs, the roti shops of Lombok and Overvecht are theirs, and Stichting India Nederland Suriname, Stichting Asha and vv Kismet run the community Holi. Their ancestors left Bihar and Uttar Pradesh for Suriname between 1873 and 1916, and their Sarnami is close enough to Hindi that the conversation works. Indian newcomers are welcome at every one of their mandirs.
• Sri Lankan Tamil neighbours were settled in the towns rather than the big cities after the 1980s, and Zeist is one of theirs: the Arulmigu Thurgai Amman temple at Laan van Vollenhove 2195 is the region's kovil. Indian Tamils share it, and Nieuwegein has Sri Lankan families too. The Sri Lankan embassy is in The Hague; Sri Lankans are exempt from the TB test.
• Pakistani neighbours share the Kanaalstraat, Panjab Supermarket (which stocks Pakistani brands), the Kashmir Kitchen on the Adelaarstraat, the cricket clubs and the Ulu Camii and the Moroccan mosques for Eid. A community platform estimates several thousand Pakistanis in Utrecht, but there is no official count. The Pakistan embassy is in The Hague.
• Bangladeshi neighbours are welcome at the three Durga Pujas, which are Bengali before they are Indian — USUC's, Aalap's and Ohm's — and the Bengali new year is celebrated together; the Bangladesh embassy is in The Hague.
• Nepali neighbours cook at Surya on the Janskerkhof, which is Indian and Nepalese; the national Nepal Samaj Nederland (1999) and the NRNA's Dutch chapter (2006) are the community bodies, and Nepal is covered consularly from its embassy in Brussels. We could not verify a Nepali or Bangladeshi association based in Utrecht itself.
