Indian businesses and services in Manchester, United Kingdom

The Curry Mile on Wilmslow Road in Rusholme is the name most people know, and for decades it was a strip of South Asian restaurants and sweet shops serving students and families late into the night. It has changed: today there are as many Middle Eastern grills, shisha cafes and dessert bars as curry houses, but the jewellers and clothing shops at the Rusholme end still serve South Asian shoppers, and it remains very busy on weekend nights and during Ramadan and Eid.

For groceries and everyday shopping, Longsight has a market just off Stockport Road and plenty of South Asian grocers, butchers and clothing shops along the main road. Levenshulme, Cheetham Hill and Whalley Range have large Pakistani communities. The Gita Bhavan Hindu temple is in Whalley Range, and there are gurdwaras and mosques across the south and east of the city.

Beyond the city itself, Greater Manchester's South Asian communities grew largely out of the mill towns of the 1950s and 1960s. Bolton has large Gujarati Hindu and Muslim populations, Oldham and Rochdale have long-established Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities, and many families shop and worship across several towns. The Manchester Mega Mela, held in Platt Fields Park in Fallowfield, is a late-summer fixture for music, food and stalls, and Diwali, Vaisakhi and Eid are celebrated across the region. Many Indian students at the University of Manchester and Manchester Metropolitan University live along the Oxford Road corridor, which helps explain why Indian grocers and street-food places keep opening there.
