Edinburgh's South Asian community is smaller and more scattered than Glasgow's, and it has been shaped as much by universities, hospitals and the finance sector as by early migration. Families of Pakistani, Indian and Bangladeshi heritage have been in the city for decades, and in recent years the number of Indian students and professionals has grown noticeably.

Leith is the closest thing the city has to a South Asian hub. Leith Walk, the long road linking the city centre to the port, is lined with South Asian grocers, butchers, sweet shops and restaurants among its many other businesses, and Leith also has both Sikh and Hindu temples. The tram extension along Leith Walk, opened in 2023, makes the area easy to reach from Princes Street. On the Southside, Nicolson Street and Clerk Street, close to the University of Edinburgh, have many South Asian restaurants busy with students. Edinburgh Central Mosque, on Potterrow near the university, is the city's main mosque.

Diwali, Eid and Vaisakhi are celebrated at the mandir, mosques and gurdwaras and in community halls; the Edinburgh Mela, held on Leith Links for a decade, has not run since 2019. August brings the Fringe, when South Asian comedians, musicians and theatre companies appear across the city. For a wider choice of groceries, fabrics and wedding shopping, many families travel to Pollokshields in Glasgow, under an hour away on the fastest trains.
