Indian businesses and services in Glasgow, United Kingdom

South of the Clyde, Pollokshields is the centre of Glasgow's South Asian community. Its sandstone villas and tenements have been home to Punjabi families, many of them of Pakistani heritage, since the 1960s, and Albert Drive is lined with grocers, sweet shops, clothing boutiques and restaurants. Neighbouring Govanhill, along Victoria Road, is one of the most diverse areas of Scotland and has plenty of South Asian grocers and takeaways. Both areas are on the south side, easily reached by train from Glasgow Central to Pollokshields East or West.

Glasgow Central Mosque, on the south bank of the river in the Gorbals, is the largest mosque in Scotland and an important focus for the city's Pakistani and wider Muslim community. Glasgow also has a well-established Sikh community with several gurdwaras, one of them on Albert Drive, and a Hindu mandir in the West End serves families of Indian origin. Over the past couple of decades the community has grown to include many professionals, doctors and students from India and other parts of South Asia.

In the West End, the streets around Gibson Street, Woodlands Road and Great Western Road have long been lined with South Asian restaurants, many of them busy with students from the University of Glasgow. Eid, Diwali and Vaisakhi are celebrated across the city, and the Glasgow Mela, usually held in Kelvingrove Park in summer, has been a long-running fixture for music, food and stalls. Albert Drive is busiest on Saturdays and in the last days of Ramadan, and the Scottish weather means outdoor events are a gamble whatever the season.
