Indian businesses and services in Birmingham, United Kingdom

Birmingham's South Asian communities live along several distinct corridors, each with its own character. To the north-west, Soho Road in Handsworth is the centre of Punjabi Sikh life, with the Guru Nanak Nishkam Sewak Jatha gurdwara, on Soho Road since 1978, and a long run of sweet shops, jewellers, fabric stores and grocers. Each spring a Vaisakhi nagar kirtan winds between gurdwaras in Handsworth and neighbouring Smethwick, drawing thousands.

South of the centre, Sparkbrook, Sparkhill and Balsall Heath are home to a large Pakistani and Kashmiri community. Ladypool Road, Stoney Lane and Stratford Road form the area that became known as the Balti Triangle, and the balti itself is widely associated with Birmingham. To the east, Alum Rock Road in Saltley is another busy Pakistani shopping street, and Small Heath, Aston and Lozells have large Pakistani and Bangladeshi communities. Birmingham Central Mosque, on the Belgrave Middleway in Highgate, is one of the largest in the UK.

Just outside the city boundary, in Tividale, the Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple is a large South Indian Hindu temple, consecrated in 2006 and modelled on the temple at Tirupati. Eid prayers in Small Heath Park have become one of the biggest Eid gatherings in Britain in recent years. Diwali, Navratri and Holi are celebrated in temples and community centres across the city. Weekends on Soho Road and Stratford Road are very busy, especially before Eid and Vaisakhi; unlike Eid, which moves with the lunar calendar, Vaisakhi falls on 13 or 14 April almost every year.
