Indians in Leuven: the 2026 guide for KU Leuven students, imec engineers and families

Leuven is a university town of 105,233 people (1 January 2026) twenty-five minutes east of Brussels, built around KU Leuven — founded in 1425, the largest university in Belgium with 66,000 students, more than a quarter of them international — and around imec, the chip-research institute on Kapeldreef whose 6,000 staff come from ninety countries. It is Dutch-speaking, compact, car-light, expensive to rent in and very safe, and it has the largest Indian student community in Belgium: 400 or more Indian students enrol at KU Leuven every year, Indians are the second-largest non-EU group after the Chinese, and the Indian Student Association of Leuven has been running since 1972. India is one of the city's three largest non-EU nationalities, after China and alongside Ukraine.

That student core is what makes Leuven unusual among Belgian cities for an Indian newcomer. There is a ready-made welcome — ISAL meets arrivals, finds rooms and runs the Diwali and Holi nights — a Ganesh festival that the city itself co-hosts on Blauwputplein, a Tagore bust in the university's garden, half a dozen Nepali and Indian restaurants within five minutes of the Oude Markt, and a professional community at imec, the research park at Haasrode and the university hospital that many of those students join when they graduate.

Leuven is a small city — 57 square kilometres, five districts — and a bicycle reaches all of it. The choice is between the student ring inside the old walls and the family districts outside them.

What rent costs

The CIB–Korfine barometer has made Leuven the most expensive rental city in Flanders for several years running: Vlaams-Brabant averaged €1,114 across all types in 2025 (apartments €1,039), and a Leuven apartment averaged about €1,132 in the first half of 2026. Numbeo (September 2026) puts a one-bedroom at €969 in the centre and €871 outside, a three-bedroom at €1,420–1,784, and a single person's spending before rent at €888 a month. Fewer than 50,000 new lettings were signed in all of Flanders in 2025, a historic low — the squeeze is real, and a complete dossier at the first viewing is what wins a flat.

The Flemish rules

A nine-year main-residence lease or a short lease of up to three years; a deposit of up to three months' rent on a blocked account in your name; the tenant's three months' notice with a break fee of 1.5, 1 or 0.5 months in the first three years; indexation once a year on the anniversary at the landlord's written request; a valid energy certificate, which from 2028 will decide whether an E- or F-rated home can be indexed at all. Immoweb, Zimmo and Immovlan carry the listings; the city's housing service and the OCMW can help with a deposit loan for lower incomes.

Student rooms (kots)

KU Leuven's own guidance for 2025–26 puts Leuven housing at €400–1,000 a month all-in, with private-market rooms typically €490–800 and university residence rooms below that; about a fifth of the city's student rooms are in residences, and half of the Central Services halls' 2,200 rooms are reserved for internationals. Income-based rooms ("huurprijs op maat", €248–494 a month in 2026–27) exist for students whose family income qualifies. The official platform is Kotwijs, which lists only vetted rooms with fair contracts. Listings peak between March and May for the following September; secure a room before you fly, and be warned that a 2023 survey of international students found rental fraud and a bank-account-before-contract catch-22 common enough that KBC now lets non-EEA students open an account without a housing contract.

The integration programme

Leuven is in Flanders, and the Flemish rule is the generous one: single-permit workers and students, and their family members, are exempt from the compulsory inburgering programme (it binds newcomers who settle through family reunification with a Belgian or a settled resident, refugees and the regularised). You may follow it voluntarily through the Agentschap Integratie en Inburgering — a social-orientation course, a Dutch course and a 40-hour participation component — at up to €180 for the orientation course and test and up to €180 for the Dutch course, with guidance free. The certificate counts toward Belgian nationality later.

Dutch

Leuven is unusually well supplied: CLT (Centrum voor Levende Talen), the university's adult-education centre, teaches Dutch as a second language at every level in evening and online formats and registers year-round; ILT, KU Leuven's language institute, teaches its own students and staff (incoming exchange students get one course free) and the Faculty of Arts runs a beginners' course for international master's students; the Huis van het Nederlands Vlaams-Brabant gives free advice and placement. You can live a student year in Leuven in English; you cannot deal with the commune, the crèche or the hospital's forms in it.

KU Leuven is the largest and highest-ranked university in Belgium (46th in the world in the Times Higher Education table, 59th in QS), with 66,306 students in September 2026 of whom 17,738 are international, 7,269 PhD students, and campuses in Leuven, Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp and elsewhere. Indians have studied here since the 1930s; the alumni chapter counts more than 2,200 Indian graduates, Indians are the fifth-largest international group overall (after the Dutch, Chinese, Italians and Spanish) and the second-largest from outside the EU, and 400 or more new Indian students have enrolled every year since 2013–14. Historically the Indian intake was in theology, economics and medicine; today it is engineering science, bioscience engineering, statistics and data science, business at the Faculty of Economics and Business, nanoscience, and the Erasmus Mundus joint programmes.

Fees for 2026–27

The fee is a fixed part plus a per-credit part, and where a Dutch-taught programme has an English twin with a higher fee, the higher fee applies. Scholarships: the Flemish Master Mind grant (€10,000 plus a tuition waiver, through KU Leuven), Science@Leuven (up to €12,000 for a year in the Faculty of Science), faculty funds such as the Roger Dillemans fund, and the university's general tuition-fee waiver — most calls close in February or March for the following September. The visa needs €1,062 a month of means (usually a blocked account of €12,744 for the year) shown through the university or an approved provider.

ISAL, India House and the alumni

The Indian Student Association of Leuven (leuvenisal.be; Instagram @isa_leuven), founded in 1972, has more than 800 student and 600 non-student members and does what a good association does: airport pick-up and accommodation guidance for newcomers, info sessions, Diwali and Holi nights, cricket, movie nights, trips across Europe. India House Leuven is the partnership of KU Leuven, the City of Leuven and Leuven MindGate that links the region with India economically, academically and culturally; the ICCR's bronze bust of Tagore, unveiled in the university's literary garden on 7 May 2015, gets an annual Tagore Day. ILAAM, the Indian alumni association at Leuven, dates from 2003, and the KU Leuven Alumni Chapter India runs events in Delhi, Mumbai and Bangalore and a panel at the Belgian embassy in New Delhi.

Working while studying, and after

Non-EEA students may work up to 20 hours a week during term (student jobs and non-curricular internships count together) and without limit in the official holidays. After graduating, apply for the 12-month search-year permit before your student card expires — typically 31 October; the decision takes up to 90 days, with an annexe 15 bridging the gap. Then the first Belgian employer files the single permit, or you apply for a professional card to start a business. imec, the Haasrode park, the hospital and the Brussels IT firms recruit from every graduating class.

Leuven was Europe's Capital of Innovation in 2020 and its economy is the university's economy: research, health, high-tech, and the companies spun out of them.

• imec — Kapeldreef 75, Heverlee. The world's leading independent research centre in nanoelectronics and chip technology: more than 6,000 staff group-wide, 5,500 of them researchers from over ninety countries, about 2,000 on the Leuven campus, and an office in Bangalore. It hires PhDs, process engineers, designers and software people continuously and is the single largest employer of Indian professionals in the city.
• UZ Leuven — the Gasthuisberg campus on Herestraat 49 (nearly 2,000 beds, 9,500 staff) plus Pellenberg and Sint-Rafaël: doctors, nurses, researchers and IT.
• The Haasrode research park in Heverlee — 136 hectares, more than 5,000 jobs: Siemens (the former LMS), Terumo, KLA, 3D Systems, Tomra, Nikon, Sony, NXP, Heraeus, and KU Leuven spin-offs including Materialise, the 3D-printing company headquartered here.
• AB InBev keeps its global headquarters on Brouwerijplein in the centre — finance, marketing, supply-chain and IT roles for a company with a large Indian operation of its own.
• KU Leuven itself — 13,700 staff, 8,100 of them researchers — and the technology-transfer office that has made Leuven a start-up city.
• Brussels is 25 minutes away, so the IT majors in Zaventem (TCS, HCLTech, Cisco), the EU quarter and NATO are within a Leuven commute; many Indian families live here and work there for the schools and the quiet.

Rules and money

Leuven is in Flanders: the Flemish highly qualified threshold (€48,912 a year, €39,129.60 for under-30s, nurses and teachers), the 2026 reform with its fifteen-day target and function-class requirement, and the new Flemish application fee all apply — explained in the Belgium guide. Statbel's wage survey puts the Leuven district among the best-paid outside Brussels, with average gross salaries above €4,250 a month. VDAB is the employment service; English is the working language at imec, the park and much of the university, and Dutch is required at the hospital and in the schools.

The commute

Leuven–Brussels-Central is about 25 minutes (21 at the fastest) with roughly four or five trains an hour and more than ninety a day; Brussels Airport is 13 minutes by direct train, at least twice an hour, and De Lijn buses 91 and 616 also run there. A standard season ticket is reimbursed in full by most employers.

Leuven is the dearest place to rent in Flanders and cheaper than Brussels for everything else. Numbeo's September 2026 basket puts a single person's spending at €888 a month before rent and a family of four's at €3,172.

A single professional in a one-bedroom outside the centre is therefore looking at roughly €1,900–2,200 a month all-in, a student in a private room about €1,200–1,400, and a family of four in a three-bedroom around €5,000 before school fees. Leuven is a bicycle city with a car-light centre. The 2016 circulation plan closed the core to through-traffic; residents get two parking permits per address and vouchers for visitor hours, street parking costs €2.50 for the first hour and rises steeply, and park-and-ride lots on the ring have a free shuttle bus. A second-hand bike from Velo, the student cooperative, costs about €30 a year including repairs (€60 through UCLL), and most students and researchers never own anything else. Buy a good lock.

De Lijn runs the buses: KU Leuven students get a Leuven-network bus pass for €25 a year on a MOBIB card; everyone aged 18–24 pays €165 for an annual Buzzy Pazz from 2026; a single ticket is €3 and an adult annual pass €499. Trains are the point of Leuven: Brussels-Central in 25 minutes four or five times an hour, Brussels Airport in 13, Mechelen and Antwerp within an hour, Liège 35 minutes east, and Ghent about an hour via Brussels. The station sits on the east edge of the centre next to the Stadskantoor, with Kessel-Lo on its far side.

An Indian driving licence cannot be exchanged and is not a basis for driving once you are a resident; the route is the Belgian theory and practical exams, explained in the Belgium guide. Leuven has no Low Emission Zone of its own, but Brussels (25 minutes away) does, and it fines older cars €350.

Hospitals and doctors

UZ Leuven Gasthuisberg (Herestraat 49) is one of Europe's largest university hospitals; Regionaal Ziekenhuis Heilig Hart (Naamsestraat 105) is the general hospital in the centre. KU Leuven students have their own GP practice at the Van Dalecollege on Naamsestraat 80 (€33.74 a consultation, of which you pay €4 with a global medical file). Childcare

Search and request childcare for 0–3-year-olds through kinderopvangleuven.be: a preference list of up to six locations, requests possible from the first day of pregnancy, waiting lists at most crèches and an emergency list for unfilled requests; the counter is at the Stadskantoor's Huis van het Kind. KU Leuven runs its own daycare centres for staff and students.

Schools

Leuven is Dutch-language and registration is windowed: nursery and primary through Meld je aan Leuven (for 2026–27 the window closed on 17 March 2026 with results on 24 April; latecomers enrol directly at schools with places), the first year of secondary through aanmelden.school (31 March to 24 April 2026 for 2026–27, results 18 May). Children without Dutch get OKAN reception classes in secondary and extra language hours in primary. The International School of Leuven (Tervuursesteenweg 282, Heverlee) is English-medium for ages 2½ to 12 — €15,200 a year full day in 2026–27, €9,880 half day for the youngest, €800 admission, 10% off for siblings and for staff of the city, imec, VIB and KU Leuven — and sits outside the city's registration system. There is no English-medium secondary school in Leuven; the British School of Brussels in Tervuren, about fifteen minutes by car, is the usual answer.

Energy, water, waste

Fluvius is the grid operator and De Watergroep the water company — notify a move with the meter readings and choose an energy supplier. EcoWerf collects waste: residual waste in brown city bags (60 litres €2.90, sold at supermarkets and the Stadskantoor), PMD in blue bags (€0.15), food waste in green bags in the centre and containers in the outer districts, paper tied in bundles; parts of the city use underground "sorteerstraten" charged by weight. Safety and the weather

Leuven's Numbeo safety index is 78.7 (May 2026): walking alone by day is rated very safe and by night safe, and bicycle theft is the crime you will actually meet. The climate is Brussels' — an annual mean around 11 °C, wet in every month, short winter days — and the university's Indian students have a tradition of a group order of winter coats in October.

Leuven has more Nepali restaurants per head than any city in Belgium and fewer Indian grocers than its community deserves — the Brussels shops and the online grocers fill the gap. Addresses were checked in September 2026; hours change, so look before you go, and treat these as pointers rather than endorsements — the live directory beneath this section is where the community rates them.

Groceries

• A South Asian supermarket at Tiensestraat 56–58 (016 23 87 88) in the centre carries rice, atta, dals, spices and frozen goods.
• Sree Krishna Groceries (sreekrishnasupermarkt.be) delivers across Belgium from €3.99 shipping, with fresh vegetables on alternate Mondays; Dookan delivers a full Indian catalogue to Leuven in three to five days; Indianspices in Schaerbeek and Sahota Brothers in Etterbeek are 25 minutes away and the latter delivers within Brussels.
• The Ganesh Cultural Festival's bazaar on Blauwputplein each September is an annual pop-up for sweets, spices and clothes.
• Colruyt, Delhaize and Lidl for rice, pulses, coconut milk and basics; the Friday market on the Ladeuzeplein and the Turkish shops on Diestsestraat for coriander, chillies and halal meat.

Restaurants

Himalaya on Tiensevest is flagged as closed on some listings; check before walking over. Every kitchen above has a full vegetarian menu, and the Ganesh festival is 100% vegetarian by rule. There is no mithai shop; packaged sweets are at the Tiensestraat supermarket, fresh ones at the festival stalls and the Brussels grocers.

Leuven has no Hindu mandir — Belgium has no purpose-built one yet, and the Hindu Temple Belgium foundation is raising money for the first — so worship is at home, in the associations' halls and at the temples 25 minutes away. KU Leuven's own faith page points Hindu students to the Hindu Forum of Belgium and to the Brussels Mandir in Evere (Rue Colonel Bourg 123–125; Sundays 11:00–13:00), which is 25 minutes by car or an hour by train and tram; the Brussels Ram Mandir in Etterbeek is open on weekend mornings. The Satya Sai Bhajan Mandali, the Nepali Hindu association, holds bhajan every Sunday in Leuven — ask at any Nepali restaurant for the current venue. ISKCON's Radhadesh in the Ardennes is a ninety-minute drive and a favourite student day trip.

The Sikh community's nearest gurdwara used to be Guru Nanak Sahib in Vilvoorde, twenty minutes away — but it has been closed indefinitely by order of the mayor since February 2025 after a stabbing and disputes over its board, and had not reopened when this guide was checked. Belgium's largest, Sangat Sahib in Sint-Truiden, is 45 minutes east by road with langar and Sunday diwan; Guru Har Rai Sahib in Deurne (Antwerp) is an hour by train.

Muslim students and families use Moskee Al Ihsaan (Kolonel Begaultlaan 45, in Leuven since 1976) and Al Salam; Eid prayers are held in the larger halls. Indian Christians will find English-language Mass in the centre and the university parish; Kairali Belgium, which is Leuven-based, is the contact for Malayalam-language services.

• ISAL — the Indian Student Association of Leuven, since 1972 — is the community's engine: orientation and pick-up for newcomers, Diwali and Holi nights, cricket, movie nights, and the Google Group and Facebook page where rooms and rides are found. It is open to non-students too (600 of its members are).
• India House Leuven (KU Leuven, the City and Leuven MindGate) runs Tagore Day each May at the bust in the literary garden and the Indialogue arts festival, and connects the region's businesses with India.
• Kairali Belgium, the Malayali association founded in 2007, is Leuven-based even though its Onam moves between halls around Brussels (12 September 2026 at the Agora in Kraainem).
• The India Centre for Culture and Creativity (ICCC), with the Internationaal Comité and the City of Leuven, puts on the Ganesh Cultural Festival on Blauwputplein in Kessel-Lo — 19–20 September 2026, 10:00–16:00, free: puja, a bazaar, vegetarian food trucks, music and dance, a laddu auction and the visarjan. It is the city's own Indian festival and the biggest of its kind in Flanders.
• Leuven Knights Cricket Club (Heverlee, founded 2017 from a tape-ball tradition) plays in Division 3 of the Belgian league and is always recruiting in spring.
• Kinepolis Leuven is part of the chain's Indian-film programme; Tamil and Hindi showtimes appear, less often than in Brussels.
• The pan-Asian ASA Leuven and the university's Pangaea international centre are where the wider South Asian student community meets.

The festival year in Leuven

Dates for the coming season are on the festival calendar. The Leuven shape of it: Holi by ISAL in the spring; Tagore Day in May; the Ganesh Cultural Festival on Blauwputplein in September and Onam with Kairali the same month; garba in Heverlee in October; ISAL's Diwali night around the date (8 November 2026), with the Brussels Diwali Festival at the Atomium on 24–25 October 2026 a train ride away; and Guru Nanak Jayanti at the Sint-Truiden gurdwara in November. Every Indian who has moved abroad has the same first move: find the WhatsApp group. Leuven has more of them than any Belgian city — one per KU Leuven intake, one per faculty, ISAL's, "Indians in Leuven" on Facebook where people ask for the links, the kot-hunting groups, the cricket group, the Malayali and Telugu and Nepali ones — and they are how the community has always run. This guide is not going to pretend otherwise.

What the groups are good at, and what they are not

They are fast and warm: ask at nine in the evening whether the counter for non-Belgians still takes walk-ins on Thursday evenings and somebody who registered last week will answer before ten. But you need to know somebody to get the link; the links that circulate are stale, and the live ones are where the "guaranteed job" and "cheap kot, pay the deposit first" scams start — the university's own survey found rental fraud against internationals common. A group of 900 students has no moderator, so the same three questions are asked every September and the answers scroll away. Every member can see your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: the flat in Antwerp and the garba in Eindhoven arrive with the same weight as the one in Heverlee.

What Namaste Community does instead

Namaste Community is a free app, built in Belgium by members of this community, that keeps what the groups do well and fixes the rest. It launched in the Benelux and works in every country — so it is also the answer when your search year takes you to Brussels, Eindhoven or Munich.

• Everything is ranked by distance from you — events, groups, questions, businesses and things for sale, within 10, 50, 100 or 200 km, your choice — so a Leuven member sees Leuven first and Brussels second.
• Groups with a place and a moderator, joined by people within their radius, with polls, join modes and a member limit; your phone number is never shown, and you can post under your name or an anonymous handle.
• Ask, and the answer stays: the question about the search-year deadline or a Hindi-speaking dentist is answered once, in a thread the next intake finds.

Your first week in the app

1. Install it, sign in, set your location to Leuven and the radius to 10 km. Get the app for iPhone or Android.
2. Join the general Leuven group and the one for your faculty, language or interest. Read before you post.
3. RSVP to one event in the next fortnight — the Ganesh festival, a cricket practice, a Diwali night.
4. Ask the question you actually have, and say whether you are a student or on a single permit; the answers differ.
5. When you have found your kot, your GP and your grocer, leave a review or an answer for the next person from Pune or Pokhara.

Leuven is one of the main Nepali cities in Belgium. Of the roughly 8,000 Hindus of Nepali origin in the country, a large share live in Leuven, Antwerp, Brussels and Bruges; in Leuven that shows in the restaurants (Masalatop, Namaste Tandoori, Nepal Delight, Wok & Momo House, Bánh Mì Chhen, Annapurna — six Nepali kitchens in a city of 105,000), in the night shops, and in the Satya Sai Bhajan Mandali's Sunday bhajan. Nepali families keep the household rites — nwaran, pasni, bratabandha, griha pravesh — at home and mark Dashain, Tihar and Teej with the NRNA's Belgian council. Pakistani and Bangladeshi students are present at KU Leuven in smaller numbers, with the pan-Asian ASA Leuven and the Association of Bangladeshi Students in Belgium as the umbrella bodies; the Sri Lankan Tamil community is centred on Brussels.

All four communities share the university, the Al Ihsaan mosque, the Sint-Truiden gurdwara's langar, the cricket league and the Kinepolis screen. Their embassies are in Brussels, 25 minutes away — Nepal at Avenue Brugmann 210, Sri Lanka at Rue Jules Lejeune 27, Pakistan at Avenue Delleur 57, Bangladesh at Rue Jacques Jordaens 29; hours and contacts are in the Belgium guide. Leuven speaks English to its 17,000 international students and Dutch to everyone else, and the line between the two is the ring road: inside it a student can spend a year in English; outside it the crèche, the school, the commune, the hospital's forms and the neighbours are Dutch.

• CLT (Centrum voor Levende Talen), KU Leuven's adult-education centre, is the main school for Dutch as a second language — every level, evening and online, registration year-round, priced per lesson hour with a cap per course.
• ILT (Instituut voor Levende Talen) teaches KU Leuven students and staff; exchange students get a course free, and the Faculty of Arts runs a beginners' course for international master's students.
• The Huis van het Nederlands Vlaams-Brabant gives free advice and placement; the Agentschap Integratie en Inburgering runs the integration programme with its Dutch component, voluntary for students and single-permit workers in Flanders and worth doing for the structure and the certificate.
• The city's free multilingual language coach helps families with children in Dutch-language schools, and the library and the student unions run conversation tables.

Indian speakers of Hindi, Punjabi or Bengali tend to find Dutch pronunciation easier than French; the word order takes a year. A2 in Dutch is a condition of Belgian nationality after five years, and a CLT certificate counts.

Belgium has one Indian mission, the Embassy of India in Brussels (Chaussée de Vleurgat 215–217, Ixelles), 25 minutes from Leuven by train plus a tram ride from Brussels-Central. Passports, OCI cards, police clearance certificates and attestations are done there by online appointment (10:00–12:30 on working days; collection 16:00–16:45); visas to India for non-Indian citizens go through VFS Global in Schaerbeek.
