The paperwork for bringing a pet from India to Belgium is not hard. It is just long, and the steps only count if you do them in the right order — get the sequence wrong and the clock starts again from zero. Budget four months before you fly.

At a glance

~4 months
Minimum, start to flight
90 days
Wait after the blood sample
0.5 IU/ml
Rabies antibody level to clear
5 days
You must travel within this of your pet

The order is the whole thing

The microchip must go in before the rabies vaccination. A vaccine given to an unchipped animal does not count, however valid the certificate looks — the EU cannot tie it to a specific pet. This is the single most common reason people have to start again, and it costs three months.

The sequence, in order

  1. Microchip. An ISO-compliant 15-digit chip. This is the identity every later document refers back to, so it comes first and there is no way round it.
  2. Rabies vaccination. Given after the chip is in. Note the date; everything downstream counts from here.
  3. Wait 30 days, then the titer test. Blood is drawn no sooner than 30 days after the vaccination and sent to an EU-approved laboratory. There is no approved lab in India, so the sample goes abroad — your vet or agency arranges the shipment.
  4. Wait 90 days. Once the result confirms above 0.5 IU/ml, a mandatory three-month wait begins — and it runs from the date the blood was taken, not the date the result came back. That distinction is worth several weeks if you plan around it correctly.
  5. Health certificate and travel. Issued close to departure by an official vet, with the declaration below.

Count backwards from your flight. 30 days plus 90 days is four months before you add lab turnaround, appointment waits and the certificate at the end. If you already know roughly when you are moving, the microchip appointment is the thing to book now.

The two rules people miss

  • The non-commercial declaration. Entering Belgium from outside the EU, you sign a statement that you will not sell the animal or transfer ownership. It is a formality, but it has to be signed.
  • Accompanied travel. You — or somebody you have authorised in writing — must travel within five days of the pet’s own movement. Sending the pet ahead by several weeks is not permitted.

Doing it yourself, or paying somebody

Every step above is something you can do on your own, and plenty of people do. The difficulty is rarely the rules; it is coordinating an Indian vet, an international lab shipment, an airline’s live-animal desk and a certificate that has to be issued in a narrow window before departure.

A relocation agency handles that coordination. We have used Furry Flyers for a move from Mumbai to Belgium. Whoever you use, ask them plainly which EU-approved lab they send to and what their current turnaround is — that single answer tells you most of what you need to know about them.

Written in 2024. The EU pet travel rules described here are long-standing, but confirm the current requirements with an official vet before you book anything — and if you are partway through and unsure whether a step counted, ask in the Namaste Community app before you redo it.
