Indians in Mechelen: the 2026 guide to the family city between Brussels and Antwerp

Mechelen passed 90,000 residents on 1 January 2026 — 90,355, up 15% in twenty years and growing by about six hundred a year — and it is growing for one reason above all: location. Its station is on the Brussels–Antwerp main line, with IC trains to both cities several times an hour and the airport a short ride away, and its mayor is fond of calling it the heart of Flanders. In 2025 four in ten homes sold in the city went to buyers under thirty, the highest share in Flanders, which tells you who is moving in: young professionals and young families who work in Brussels or Antwerp and want a house, a garden and a school within cycling distance.

The Indian community here is small and mostly of that kind — IT and pharma professionals commuting to Zaventem, Brussels or Antwerp, families who chose Mechelen for the schools and the price — with no figure published and no association of its own; its life runs through the Brussels and Antwerp associations, the two temples in those cities, the Mechelen Eagles cricket club and two Indian restaurants in the centre.

Mechelen was, for a few years in the sixteenth century, the capital of the Netherlands — the court of Margaret of Austria sat here — and it wears that history lightly: St Rumbold's tower, never finished, with its two carillons and the best view in Flanders; the Grote Markt and its cafés; the Dijle river threading the centre with walkways at water level; the beguinages; the Dossin barracks, now a museum of the Holocaust and human rights that every Belgian schoolchild visits; the Kazerne Dossin's neighbour, the carillon school that trains bell-players from around the world. It is a city of 90,000 that feels like a town, twenty minutes from two cities that feel like cities, and that is exactly its appeal.

For a family the practical geography is: the centre inside the ring (car-light, cobbled, expensive to park, lovely to walk), the station district to the south-east with the Ragheno redevelopment behind it, Nekkerspoel to the east with the second station and the Turkish and Moroccan shops, the Vrijbroekpark to the west where the cricket club plays and the summer festivals are held, and the villages of Muizen, Hombeek, Leest, Heffen and Walem with their gardens and their own schools. Planckendael, the zoo, is on the edge of Muizen and is the standard rainy-Sunday answer for every family with children; Technopolis, the hands-on science centre, is the other. The Dijle path runs to Leuven for cyclists with a free afternoon.

The city's own calendar — the Maanrock free music festival in August, Mechelen Feest, the Christmas market, the Hanswijk procession every 25 years (last held in 2013) — is Flemish and welcoming; the Indian calendar is a train ride away in either direction. Mechelen's newcomers' service and its "Mechelen model" of integration are known across Flanders, and the Huis van de Mechelaar is used to explaining the city in English, patiently, to people who have just arrived from Pune or Chennai and are trying to work out whether their office in Zaventem counts as Brussels or Flanders for the permit. Mechelen is a walled medieval centre — the Grote Markt, St Rumbold's tower, the Dijle — inside a ring road, with residential districts spreading to the station in the south-east, the Nekkerspoel station to the east, the Vrijbroekpark to the west, and the villages of Muizen, Hombeek, Leest, Heffen and Walem attached to it. The centre is car-light and pleasant; the districts around the two stations are where commuting families look first, and Ragheno, the redevelopment behind the main station, is becoming a new live-and-work quarter around Telenet's future headquarters.

What it costs

The CIB barometer's average apartment rent for Mechelen was €1,000 in the first half of 2026 — third in Flanders after Leuven (€1,132) and Antwerp (€1,009), which says something about demand. Houses with gardens in the outer districts are the reason families come, and prices for them have risen with the under-thirty buyers. Flemish rental rules apply: a nine-year main-residence lease or a short lease of up to three years, a deposit of up to three months' rent on a blocked account, three months' notice with a declining break fee, annual indexation on request, and a valid energy certificate. Registering

Everything at the Huis van de Mechelaar, Reuzenstraat 1 — the city's single administrative counter — by appointment booked online, by phone (0800 20 800, or 015 28 00 00; weekdays 09:00–12:30, Mon–Thu also 13:30–16:30) or at reception; onthaal@mechelen.be. The national sequence — within 8 working days, annexe 15, police check, A card, national number — is in the Belgium guide. The Agentschap Integratie en Inburgering's Mechelen office runs the Flemish integration programme (voluntary for single-permit workers and students, compulsory for family members joining a settled resident) and points you to Dutch classes at the CVO.

Mechelen's own employers are telecoms, technology and public services: Telenet has been in the city for thirty years and is building a new headquarters in "The Quint" office cluster on the Ragheno site behind the station (construction from 2027, move-in 2030); the business parks north of the city and around Nekkerspoel host technology and logistics firms; the city, the province and the schools employ thousands; and Technopolis, the Flemish science centre, is on the edge of town. But most Indian professionals in Mechelen work elsewhere, and the timetable is the point: about twenty minutes by IC train to Brussels-Central and to Antwerpen-Centraal, both several times an hour, and Brussels Airport about 25 minutes — which puts the IT belt of Zaventem and Diegem (TCS, HCLTech, Cisco), the EU quarter, the Antwerp port and chemical plants and the pharma sites at Beerse and Puurs all within a Mechelen commute. A standard SNCB season ticket is reimbursed in full by most employers.

The Flemish single-permit rules apply — €48,912 a year for the highly qualified, €39,129.60 under 30, the 2026 reform and its fee — unless your office is in Brussels, in which case the Brussels threshold (€44,441) does; the Region that counts is where you work, not where you sleep, and the Belgium guide sets the three side by side. Getting around

Two stations — Mechelen on the main line and Mechelen-Nekkerspoel to the east — and De Lijn buses across the city at the 2026 fares (single €3, day €9, annual pass €499, €165 a year for 18–24-year-olds). The centre is car-light with paid parking and park-and-ride on the ring; cycling is the norm for everything inside it. Mechelen decided in 2019 not to introduce a Low Emission Zone, choosing an air-quality zone instead, and has not reversed that — so an older car that Antwerp or Brussels would fine is legal here, though it cannot enter those cities. Schools and childcare

Mechelen is Dutch-language and its schools register through the regional aanmelden system: for 2026–27 the primary window ran to 17 March 2026 and the first year of secondary from 31 March to 24 April, with results on 18 May; latecomers enrol directly at schools with places. Children arriving without Dutch get OKAN reception classes. There is no international school in Mechelen; the Antwerp International School in Ekeren and the British School of Brussels in Tervuren are each about half an hour by car, and families who need English-medium schooling usually choose the city they work in instead. Childcare from 0 to 3 goes through the city's kinderopvang portal — apply as soon as the pregnancy is confirmed.

Health

AZ Sint-Maarten, Mechelen's general hospital, is on the northern ring with a 24-hour emergency department; the university hospitals of Antwerp and Leuven are half an hour away. Join a health fund in your first week; the rules and emergency numbers are in the Belgium guide.

Waste and utilities

IVAREM collects Mechelen's waste, and from 2026 the yellow bag is gone: residual and food waste go in rented chip containers billed by weight (€0.35 a kilo for residual waste in 2026), collected fortnightly, with PMD, paper and glass sorted as everywhere in Flanders; the free number is 0800 90 441. Fluvius is the grid operator and Pidpa the water company.

Food

Two Indian restaurants in the centre, both worth knowing: The Indian Rasoi, Oscar Van Kesbeeckstraat 48, and Spice of India, Zandpoortvest 22; Chillys', Paradise of India and a handful of others appear on the booking platforms. For groceries the Mechelen shops are thin — the Turkish and Moroccan grocers of the Nekkerspoel district cover rice, pulses and halal meat — and the community drives to Antwerp's Shanti Shop (Statiestraat) or Brussels' Chaussée de Wavre, or orders from Sree Krishna Groceries and Dookan, which deliver to the door. Addresses were checked in September 2026; hours change, so look before you go, and treat these as pointers rather than endorsements — the live directory beneath this section is where the community rates them.

Worship

Mechelen has no temple. The Brussels Mandir in Evere (Sundays 11:00–13:00) and Antwerp's BAPS mandir and Jain temple are each about half an hour by road; the Guru Har Rai Sahib gurdwara in Deurne is the nearest open one since the Vilvoorde gurdwara, ten minutes south, was closed indefinitely by its mayor in February 2025. Mechelen's own mosques serve Muslim families; Indian Christians find English-language services in Brussels.

Cricket and the festival year

The Mechelen Eagles Cricket Club plays the Belgian federation's T20 Cup on its ground in the Vrijbroekpark in summer and indoors at the Scheppers Instituut hall in winter, with a Mechelen Cricket Academy for juniors — the readiest way into the community here. The festivals are twenty minutes away in either direction: the Brussels Diwali Festival at the Atomium (24–25 October 2026), the Antwerp Indian Association's Diwali and Holi, the BAPS Ganesh procession in Antwerp's Stadspark, the Leuven Ganesh festival on Blauwputplein, Kairali's Onam near Brussels, and the two Brussels Durga Pujas; dates are on the festival calendar, and the events posted near Mechelen are listed below as they are added.

Mechelen's prices are Flanders' prices with a city-centre rent premium: the national picture — a tax wedge that leaves a single worker about 60% of gross, cheap healthcare, dear childcare, indexed wages — is in the Belgium guide. Two budgets

A single professional in a one-bedroom near the station spends roughly €1,900–2,200 a month all-in, less than Brussels or Leuven; a family of four in a house in Kessel-Lo-style outer Mechelen — Muizen, Hombeek, Nekkerspoel — about €4,800–5,500 before school fees, and the free Dutch-language schools are what most Mechelen families use. Belgian wages are indexed to inflation automatically in most sectors (the health index was forecast at 3.2% for 2026), meal vouchers are worth up to €10 a working day, and the thirteenth month and double holiday pay are customary; add them to the gross before comparing an offer with an Indian package.

Mechelen is a Dutch-speaking city that speaks good English in the office and none at the school gate, the crèche or the Huis van de Mechelaar's letters — and it is a city that has made integration its politics: its former mayor built a national reputation on the "Mechelen model" of newcomers and neighbourhoods, and the city's services for newcomers are unusually good for its size.

• The Agentschap Integratie en Inburgering's Mechelen office runs the Flemish integration programme: a social-orientation course (up to €180 with the test; pass mark 70% since February 2026), a Dutch course (up to €180), free guidance and a work track. Single-permit workers and students, and their family members, are exempt from the obligation but entitled to join; family members joining a Belgian or a settled non-EU resident are obliged. The certificate counts toward Belgian nationality later.
• The CVO adult-education centres in Mechelen teach Dutch as a second language (NT2) in evening, day and online formats at €1.50 a lesson hour or less, with reductions for job-seekers; register through the Agentschap's placement test.
• The Huis van het Nederlands gives free advice and placement; the city library runs conversation tables and a language café; the Mechelen schools' parent groups are, for families, the most effective classroom of all.

Indian speakers of Hindi, Punjabi, Gujarati or Bengali usually find Dutch pronunciation easier than French; the word order takes a year. A2 in Dutch is a condition of Belgian nationality after five years, and a CVO certificate counts. For a Mechelen family whose children are in the Dutch schools, the children will be fluent in a year and the parents will be asked, kindly and often, why they are not.

What people wish they had known

• The Region of the office, not the home, sets the permit rules — and Mechelen families work in all three.
• The Vilvoorde gurdwara is closed; Deurne and Sint-Truiden are the open ones.
• Mechelen has no Low Emission Zone, but the two cities do: an older car is legal here and fined there.
• The aanmelden windows close in March and April for the following September; miss them and you enrol wherever has a place.

Mechelen is a college town rather than a university city: Thomas More, the largest university of applied sciences in Flanders, has a large Mechelen campus by the station teaching business, IT, communication, healthcare and education programmes, several of them in English, and a growing international intake. The universities are twenty minutes away in either direction — KU Leuven (with the largest Indian student community in Belgium, 400 or more a year) and the University of Antwerp (non-EEA master's €7,800 a year in 2026–27) — and a Mechelen room is a cheaper base for both than a Leuven kot in September: student rooms here run below Leuven's €490–800, with the train timetable doing the rest.

The rules are national and in the Belgium guide: a D visa on the admission letter and proof of means (€1,062 a month for 2026–27, usually a blocked account of €12,744), an A card for the length of the course, 20 hours of work a week during term, and the 12-month search-year permit after graduating — applied for before the student card expires — that leads into the highly qualified single permit when an employer hires you. Thomas More's international office handles the registration attestation the Huis van de Mechelaar needs; the Indian Student Association of Leuven, founded in 1972, is the nearest student community and welcomes Mechelen students to its Diwali and Holi.

Every Indian who has moved abroad has the same first move: find the WhatsApp group. Mechelen's are Brussels' and Antwerp's — the big "Indians in Belgium" groups, the Zaventem IT-belt groups, the school-parent groups — and a small "Indians in Mechelen" one that comes and goes. They are how the community has always run, and this guide is not going to pretend otherwise.

What the groups are good at, and what they are not

They are fast and warm: ask at nine in the evening whether the Huis van de Mechelaar has appointments this week and somebody who registered last month will answer before ten. But you need to know somebody to get the link; the links that circulate are stale, and the live ones are where the "guaranteed job" and "cheap OCI service" scams start. A group of 800 people spread across Belgium has no moderator, so the same three questions are asked every week and the answers scroll away. Every member can see your phone number. And a group does not know that you live in Mechelen: the flat in Ghent and the garba in Heverlee arrive with the same weight as the one in Nekkerspoel.

Your first week in the app
