Indian businesses and services in Edmonton, Canada

Ask where Edmonton's South Asian community lives and the usual answer is Mill Woods. The large planned suburb in the south-east has a high concentration of Punjabi, Gujarati and other South Asian families: in the 2021 Census, about a third of the people in the Edmonton Mill Woods federal riding identified as South Asian. Its strip malls hold many of the city's Indian grocers, sweet shops and restaurants.

Gurdwara Millwoods is one of the main Sikh centres in the area, and each May the city's Vaisakhi nagar kirtan runs between it and Gurdwara Singh Sabha. Hindu temples run by community societies, and mosques serving Pakistani and other Muslim families, are spread across Edmonton rather than clustered in one place. Diwali is marked in temples, community halls and homes across the city.

The Valley Line LRT, which opened in November 2023, runs from Mill Woods Town Centre to downtown, a real help for anyone without a car. Elsewhere Edmonton is spread out, and winters are long and cold, so plan trips to temples and grocers around road conditions in the colder months. Weekend afternoons are the busiest time at the larger grocers, especially before festivals.
