Indians in Luxembourg City: the 2026 guide to the neighbourhoods, the paperwork and the community

The capital is small and extraordinarily mixed. On 31 December 2025 it had 137,696 residents — up 1,488 in the year, the slowest growth for some time after the surge of 2022 — of whom 42,020 (30.5%) were Luxembourgers and 95,676 (69.5%) held one of 167 other passports. The French (20,638), Portuguese (10,795) and Italians (10,261) are the largest foreign groups, and the fastest-growing bloc is Asian: 8,856 residents at the end of 2025 against 5,942 five years earlier. The most populous quarters are Bonnevoie-Sud (13,428), Belair (13,331), Limpertsberg (11,593), Gare (11,292) and Kirchberg (10,982); Gare is the most foreign quarter of all at 81.6%, Kirchberg and Neudorf-Weimershof about 75%, while Cents, Grund and Hamm are the only ones where Luxembourgers are close to a majority.

The Grand Duchy's 5,728 Indian nationals (1 January 2026) are the national figure — the city publishes nationality by quarter in its annual population report, but no per-quarter Indian count has reached the press — and most of them live and work here: in the funds and banks, on Kirchberg at the EU institutions and at Amazon's eight-building campus on the avenue J.F. Kennedy, at the Big Four around the Cloche d'Or, at the IT services firms in Capellen and Gasperich, and at the university. The shops, restaurants and the consular desk that serve them cluster within ten minutes' walk of the central station, and the associations' festivals fill the city's halls from Pongal in January to Diwali in November.

The city sits on a plateau cut by the deep valleys of the Alzette and the Pétrusse, and the districts are separated by cliffs and bridges as much as by streets. The tram, completed to the airport and the Cloche d'Or in 2025, has become the spine along which newcomers choose; the rents in the next section show why the choice matters.

What the law says

Since 1 August 2024 the deposit is capped at two months' rent, agency fees are split 50/50 between landlord and tenant, every lease must be written, and a colocation regime exists for flat-shares. Have your contract, three pay slips and your visa D or residence permit ready at the first viewing; good flats go in days. Portals: athome.lu, immotop.lu, wortimmo.lu. Luxembourg City has the highest rents in the Benelux, and they rose faster in 2026 than in any year since the pandemic: the Housing Observatory's index of advertised apartment rents was up 5.8% year on year in the second quarter of 2026 (after +2.0% in Q4 2025 and +4.4% in Q1 2026), against inflation of 2.4%, even though the number of flats advertised was up 28%. Houses to rent are 4% of the supply and fell slightly. The city averaged €35.61 per square metre in February 2026 against €30.72 nationally, and the advertised average across the city over the year to March 2026 was about €1,960 a month — the cheaper quarters pulling the average down because their flats are also smaller.

What that means per month

Gasperich, Cents and Clausen sit between the two right-hand columns — a two-bedroom at €2,200–2,800 in spring 2026 — and Ville-Haute, the old centre, asks Kirchberg money for older flats. The average advertised apartment over the year to March 2026 was €2,443 in Limpertsberg, €2,417 on Kirchberg, €2,290 in Ville-Haute and €2,237 in Gare, but only €1,414 in Eich, €1,391 in Bonnevoie, €1,334 in Hamm and €1,324 in Dommeldange — a difference of a thousand euros a month for a walk of twenty minutes or a tram stop. Numbeo's contributors give the same picture in a single number: a one-bedroom about €1,985 in the centre and €1,777 outside it, a three-bedroom €2,721–3,215 (September 2026).

Buying

To buy, advertised apartments averaged €12,229 per square metre across the city over the same year: Neudorf-Weimershof €13,531, Belair €13,497, Gasperich €12,355, Limpertsberg €12,101, Ville-Haute €11,817. A 90 m² family flat in Belair is therefore a €1.2 million purchase; most Indian families who buy do so in the southern suburbs, in Esch, or over the border. What else the Bierger-Center does

It is the one counter for almost everything a resident asks the city: changes of address and departures, certificates of residence, the chèque-service accueil, registering a dog, and later the nationality application. Every visit is by appointment, which is a blessing once you are used to it — the queue is at your desk, not in the hall — and a trap in the first week if you land on a Friday afternoon without one.

Public transport in Luxembourg City is free and, since March 2025, joined up: tram line 1 runs from Findel Airport across Kirchberg, down to the funicular-linked Pfaffenthal-Kirchberg station, through the centre and the Gare to Howald and the Cloche d'Or in Gasperich, every few minutes, with no ticket. The city's buses and the national RGTR network are free too; the Pfaffenthal lift and the funicular connect the valley to the plateau. Second-class trains from the Gare Centrale reach Esch and Belval in twenty minutes and the border towns in under an hour, free to the last Luxembourg station. A Kirchberg branch to Luxexpo opens in autumn 2027 and a line along the route d'Arlon to the CHL hospital is planned for 2032.

Findel Airport is fifteen minutes from the centre on the tram. There are no nonstop flights to India: Frankfurt (two hours by train, or a short hop), Paris, Amsterdam, Istanbul and — from 29 October 2026 — Abu Dhabi with Etihad are the connections.

If you keep a car

Driving in the city is for weekends. The Ville de Luxembourg's residential parking vignette is free for a household's first car, €60 a year for the second and €120 for the third, valid twelve months, in one of about 24 zones with two-letter codes (BA for Belair, BO for Bonnevoie and so on); apply online and send the documents to the Service Circulation. A visitor permit costs €16, up to three a year for up to three months each. On the street, the white zones give 30 minutes free with a disc; the orange zones are €2 an hour for a maximum of two hours; yellow zones €1 an hour for three to five hours; green zones €2 for the first three hours then €1.50 an hour up to five; purple zones €0.50 an hour for up to ten hours. The park-and-ride car parks at Bouillon, Luxembourg-Sud, Kockelscheuer, the Cloche d'Or and Esch-Belval are free for the first 24 hours and feed the tram and trains — which is how most car-owning families in the suburbs use the city.

An Indian licence converts within twelve months for €30 without a practical test — the rare good news of the licence chapter, explained in the Luxembourg guide. Cycling is growing along the valley paths and the vel'OH! bike-share is city-wide; the cross-border commute by train has its own section further down.

Luxembourg City's Indian workforce follows the money: fund administration and banking, the EU institutions, one very large technology employer, the Big Four, and the Indian IT services firms that serve all of them. The salary picture

Luxembourg pays the highest wages in Europe: STATEC-derived figures for 2026 put the mean gross salary at about €75,900 a year (€6,330 a month) and the median at about €58,100. The skilled minimum wage was €3,325.59 a month from 1 June 2026, and salaries are indexed to inflation in 2.5% steps. Against that, the rents in the previous section take a third of a median salary for a one-bedroom in Bonnevoie and half of it on Kirchberg — which is why the impatriate regime, the free transport and the free schools matter as much as the headline number.

The business network

The Indian Business Chamber of Luxembourg (IBCL) at 45 route d'Arlon, Strassen (office weekdays 08:30–12:00; +352 445 905; contact@ibcl.lu) runs the year's business programme — a space-technology series and a fireside chat with a leading Indian fintech founder were on its 2026 agenda — and its Diwali gala is the business community's annual night. Its events are where a newcomer meets the partners and directors who hire.

Nearly half of the people who work in the Grand Duchy sleep in France, Belgium or Germany, and after a first year in the city many Indian families make the same calculation. The reason is a single number: Luxembourg City rents averaged €35.61 per square metre in February 2026, while apartments in Thionville, thirty minutes south, let for about €13 per square metre — a 60 m² three-room flat in Yutz, next to Thionville, was advertised at €780 a month in 2026 — and Metz for about €11. Buying in Thionville's centre cost €1,800–2,200 per square metre in 2026, a sixth of Belair. Arlon, in Belgian Luxembourg, is the same trade with Belgian schools and Belgian paperwork; Trier, in Germany, the same with German ones. About 120,000 French residents cross the border every working day.

The trains

Domestic transport is free, so a cross-border commuter pays only for the stretch outside the Grand Duchy. The grid introduced when free transport began in 2020 is still the one most people quote: Arlon to any Luxembourg station €53 a month or €534 a year (down from €82), Thionville €45.50 a month on the French Presto pass (from €88), Trier €49 a month (from €85). Prices have moved since and the current figures are on cfl.lu (+352 2489 2489) and the TER Grand Est site — check before quoting them to your HR department, who will normally reimburse the pass. On the French side the Primo (under 26) and Presto (26 and over) passes cover Lorraine to Bettembourg, after which the free network takes over; the Metz–Thionville–Luxembourg line is the busiest railway axis into the country, and in autumn 2026 it ran on works timetables until 20 September and again from 21 September to 4 October, with CFL interruptions around the capital from 31 October to 8 November. Any commuter should have the Mobilitéit app and the TER app both installed.

What you give up

Three things. The impatriate tax regime and Luxembourg social security follow the job, not the address, so they survive the move — but your income tax becomes a cross-border matter under the relevant treaty, with a cap on the number of home-working days a year before the other country taxes that income — ask your employer's payroll team for the current tolerance with your country before you sign a lease. Your children's schooling switches to the French, Belgian or German system unless you keep them in a Luxembourg school and drive them. And the Indian life of the city — the Sunday shop on the rue de Strasbourg, the association gala, the consular desk on a Wednesday afternoon — becomes a train ride rather than a walk. Families who make the move tend to be those whose children are small or already in the free public system, and who own a car; single professionals mostly stay in Gare and Bonnevoie and pay the difference for the tram.

Almost everything Indian to buy or eat in the Grand Duchy is within a fifteen-minute walk of the central station, with one large new grocer across the railway in Bonnevoie and another in Esch. Addresses were checked in September 2026; hours change, so look before you go, and treat these as pointers rather than endorsements — the live directory beneath this section is where the community rates them.

Groceries

• Euro-Indian Market — 38 rue de Strasbourg, Gare; +352 24 87 35 23; open seven days (Mon–Sat 09:00–21:00, Sun 09:00–20:00, public holidays included). Rice, atta, dals, spices, fresh produce, packaged sweets — the community's longest-standing shop.
• Dokaan — 122–126 route de Thionville, Bonnevoie, between the Losch garage and the Tesla centre; +352 661 123 000; open 10:00–21:00 seven days a week. Indian, African and Asian grocery on a supermarket scale: fresh vegetables, frozen meat and fish, rice and flours by the sack, spices, Korean lines — and free home delivery to most of the country, each area served twice a week, which for a family in Belair or Strassen is the real service.
• S.K Cash & Carry — 38 rue Sainte-Zithe, on the Gare–Hollerich edge; +352 2899 8112; Indian and Asian grocery with African lines.
• APNA — 12 rue de l'Alzette, Esch-sur-Alzette; +352 27 74 28 91; open 10:00–20:00 every day including public holidays; orders online through myfoods.lu with free shipping over €200. The shop for the university and Belval families.
• Online: Tandoori Market (onlinestore.lu) delivers within Luxembourg; Dookan ships from Czechia in three to five days and is the closest thing the country has to a mithai shop — soan papdi, gulab jamun, Haldiram's milk cake and peda by post. Fresh sweets appear at the associations' galas.
• Cactus (Bonnevoie, Belair), Auchan (Kirchberg, Cloche d'Or), Delhaize and Lidl for basics; the Saturday market on the Place Guillaume II for vegetables and the Sunday market at the Glacis once a month.

Restaurants

Every kitchen has a full vegetarian menu; the Nepali-run ones do momo and thakali alongside the North Indian standards, and a dosa means a trip to Esch. Lunch menus at the Gare kitchens are the bargain, and Nirvana Café is the cheapest plate in the quarter.

Prayer

Luxembourg has about 6,150 Hindus by the 2024 estimate — some 5,700 Indian and 450 Nepali — and no fixed Hindu prayer hall. The Hindu Forum Luxembourg, founded in 2018 by twenty-one trustees — Indian and Nepali among them — with a plan for a centre with daily deepam, classes, yoga and dance, lost the use of its Beggen premises in 2022 and has since hired halls: its Diwali that year was at the Lycée Michel Rodange in Merl, and on Sunday 12 July 2026 it held a public "discussion about a temple in Luxembourg" at the Centre Sociétaire et Sportif, 29 rue de Strasbourg in the Gare quarter, restarting the drive for a permanent Shiva–Vishnu temple. Pujas, satsang and house ceremonies run through its pandit and its pages; the land and funding status is what those pages will announce. The nearest consecrated Hindu temple over the border is the Sri Maha Mariamman temple at Sulzbach in the Saarland, about 95 km east, a Tamil temple whose chariot festival drew about five hundred in 2017; Radhadesh, ISKCON's château in the Belgian Ardennes, is ninety minutes by road. South Asian Muslims pray at Le Juste Milieu (Centre Maryam), 32 rue Dernier Sol, Bonnevoie — opened in 2015, Friday prayer in two sittings at 12:15 and 13:15, children's classes and a Saturday lecture, a separate women's entrance — and at the Centre Culturel Islamique at 2 route d'Arlon in Mamer, the country's oldest, with a Quranic school. There is no gurdwara in the Grand Duchy that we could confirm; a Langar Society of Luxembourg exists on Facebook, and the nearest gurdwaras are in Belgium.

Associations

The Indian Association Luxembourg (since 1991; ial.lu; info@ial.lu; registered at 165 Muehlenweg, Gasperich) is the community's front door: International Day of Yoga, the National-Day torchlight procession, India Day on the Place Guillaume II each September, a classical concert in the autumn and the Diwali Gala. The Indian Arts and Cultural Association Luxembourg (IACAL) at 3 place Marie-Paule Molitor-Peffer in Differdange (info@iacal.org) keeps the temple calendar the city lacks — two Kalyanams, Holi and Ganesh Chaturthi each year — and trains children in classical dance. The Luxembourg Malayali Association runs Malayalam classes and Onam (luxembourgmalayaliassociation@gmail.com); the Telugu Association of Luxembourg keeps Sankranthi; the Tamil Sangam Luxembourg runs a Tamil school, Bharatanatyam and yoga classes at the Esch youth hostel and Pongal, Tamil New Year and an annual Aandu Vizha (membership €20 a family, €10 an activity a month in 2026); the Luxembourg Durgotsav Association (LuxUtsav), since 2019, is the Bengali association and holds the country's Durga Puja; the Indian Business Chamber connects the firms; LuxInDancers teaches Bollywood, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and freestyle; and the NRNA Luxembourg and the Pakistan Association Luxembourg serve the Nepali and Pakistani communities. The University's ISAL is the students' association.

The festival year

The 2026 dates are in the calendar section below and on the festival calendar. The pattern: Pongal and Sankranthi in January with the Tamil and Telugu associations; IACAL's Kalyanams in January and March; Holi in Differdange in May; Yoga Day and India Day with the IAL in June and September; Onam with the Malayali Association in September; Ganesh Chaturthi with IACAL; Durga Puja with LuxUtsav in October; the IAL Diwali Gala (Cercle Cité on the Place d'Armes in 2025, its thirty-fifth year; the venue has moved between the Centre Culturel Merl and the Cercle Cité) and the IBCL's gala around Diwali itself; Dashain and Tihar with the NRNA. The Brussels Diwali Festival at the Atomium (24–25 October 2026) is two and a half hours by train.

Dates that were public by September 2026. Venues move from year to year — the IAL's Diwali Gala has used the Centre Culturel Merl (26 rue St Hubert) and the Cercle Cité; LuxUtsav's Durga Puja was at the Salle Um Duerf, 3 rue de Hesperange, Itzig, in 2025 — so the organiser's page is the last word.

Two practical notes. Almost every one of these is ticketed through the association's page or Eventbrite — the Diwali Gala tickets in 2023 were €30–35 for adults and €20–25 for children — so join the association's mailing list in your first month, before the gala fills. And because the city has no temple hall, the festivals are the community's religious calendar: a family that wants a Ganesh puja with a pandit goes to Differdange on 19 September, not to a mandir on the day itself.

Luxembourg is Europe's highest-wage economy and its highest-rent capital, and the city is where both peaks are. The national picture — free transport, free crèche hours, free international schools, a health fund that pays 88% of the doctor, the 50% impatriate exemption against rents far above Brussels — is in the Luxembourg guide. Two budgets

A single professional in a one-bedroom in Gare or Bonnevoie spends roughly €3,000–3,300 a month all-in; a couple in Gasperich about €4,400; a family of four in a three-bedroom in Belair or Merl about €7,000–7,800 before any private-school fees — and the 50% impatriate exemption, the free crèche hours, the free schools and the free transport are what bring that back within reach. On a median salary the single budget is tight and the Kirchberg one impossible, which is why the fund analyst lives in Bonnevoie and the Amazon principal engineer on Kirchberg, and why nearly half the country's workers commute in from Arlon, Thionville, Metz and Trier, where a flat costs about a third per square metre. Salaries are indexed to inflation in 2.5% steps; rents rose 5.8% in the year to mid-2026.

Luxembourg City runs in four languages and a newcomer needs to know which is for what. French is the language of the shops, the restaurants, the Bierger-Center's letters and the commune's forms — learn enough to read a letter and buy bread in the first months. Luxembourgish is the language the state wants you to learn: it is what Luxembourgers speak to each other, what the nationality test examines (speaking at A2, listening at B1), and what the city's own free courses teach. German is the language of much of the press and of the public schools' literacy years. English is the language of Kirchberg, the funds, Amazon, the university and — in practice — of the Indian community; you can work a decade in the city without the other three, and many do, and the city's Luxembourgish courses are full of people who wish they had started sooner.

• The welcome and integration contract (CAI), signed online through MyGuichet, is voluntary and worth signing on arrival: up to three language vouchers — Luxembourgish, French or German courses at the Institut National des Langues or a communal school for €10 each — a free six-hour citizenship course and an orientation day.
• The Ville de Luxembourg runs its own Luxembourgish language and culture courses for residents, at several levels, enrolled through vdl.lu.
• The Institut National des Langues (INL) in Limpertsberg and its annexes teach all three national languages and English at every level, and are the examining body for the Sproochentest.
• The Sproochentest for nationality — Luxembourgish speaking at A2 and listening at B1 — and the "Vivre ensemble" citizenship course are the five-year goal; a CAI voucher course is the first step toward it.
• Heritage languages for the children: Tamil at the Tamil Sangam's Saturday school in Esch, Malayalam through the Luxembourg Malayali Association's classes; there is no Hindi weekend school in the country that we could find, and Hindi runs on private tutors and the Bollywood classes.

Indian speakers find Luxembourgish, a Moselle-Franconian dialect with a French vocabulary, easier to hear than to speak; the city's Luxembourgers are famously patient with anyone who tries. The public schools teach in Luxembourgish first, German for literacy and French from the second year, and the international sections at Michel Lucius add Luxembourgish an hour a week — the trilingual state reaches into every classroom. Since 1 October 2026 Luxembourg's sequence looks like its neighbours' — the visa D comes first and the separate authorisation to stay is gone — and the city adds a three-day deadline and a two-afternoon consular desk. What people wish they had known

• Three days, not eight: book the Bierger-Center before you land — and it is appointment-only.
• The consular desk is open two afternoons a week: a passport that expires next month is a problem discovered on a Friday.
• Convert the licence in year one or sit the exams in year two.
• The free schools have waiting lists too: Michel Lucius closed its 2026–27 applications in mid-March and may redirect families to the Differdange school; apply the moment you have a contract.
• There is no temple hall: the festivals are in hired rooms in Differdange, Itzig, Merl and the Gare — join the associations, or you will not hear where.
• The bin is a tax: a 120-litre residual bin is €300 a year; choose the smallest you can live with.
• The groups know first — which crèche has a place, which flat is going, which pandit is free for a house puja. The Luxembourg groups in the app are listed below.

Every Indian who has moved abroad has the same first move: find the WhatsApp group. Luxembourg City has them — the "Indians in Luxembourg" groups that split as they grow, the Malayali, Telugu, Tamil and Bengali ones, the funds-industry job groups, the Amazon newcomers' group, the flat-hunting group, the cricket group — and they are how a community of six thousand has always run. This guide is not going to pretend otherwise.

What the groups are good at, and what they are not

They are fast and warm: ask at nine in the evening whether the Bierger-Center has an appointment this week and somebody who did it last week will answer before ten. But you need to know somebody to get the link; the links that circulate are stale, and the live ones are where the "guaranteed job in a fund" and "cheap OCI service" scams start. A group of 800 people has no moderator, so the same three questions are asked every week and the answers scroll away. Every member can see your phone number. And a group does not know where you live: the flat in Esch and the garba in Brussels arrive with the same weight as the one in Bonnevoie.

What Namaste Community does instead

Namaste Community is a free app, built in the Benelux by members of this community, that keeps what the groups do well and fixes the rest. It launched in Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg and works in every country — so it is also the answer when a fund moves you to Dublin or Frankfurt.

• Marketplace and rooms from members near you — furniture, a spare room in Gasperich, a car seat.
• Verified members, moderation, and a report button on everything.

Your first week in the app

1. Install it, sign in, set your location to Luxembourg City and a 50 km radius — the whole country fits, and the border towns too. Get the app for iPhone or Android.
2. Join the general Luxembourg group and the one for your language or interest. Read before you post.
3. RSVP to one event in the next fortnight — a puja in a hired hall, a cricket practice in Walferdange, a gala.
4. Ask the question you actually have, and say which quarter you are in; the answer for Kirchberg is not the answer for Bonnevoie.
5. When you have found your flat, your GP and your grocer, leave a review or an answer for the next person from Chennai or Kathmandu.

The two together

The associations post on Facebook and WhatsApp and will go on doing so; the same event posted in the app reaches the family that arrived in Gasperich last month and knows nobody yet, and it stays findable after the chat has scrolled on. The groups near the city are listed below, ranked by how active they are. If the one you need does not exist yet, start it: it takes a minute, and it shows up here for the next person searching.

Crèches and after-school care

The chèque-service accueil (CSA) gives every child aged one to four twenty free crèche hours a week and free maison relais after-school care from four to twelve in term time, with the parental share of the remaining hours set by income. City residents enrol at the Bierger-Center (there is an online form); cross-border workers go through the CAE. The agreement is valid twelve months and renewed yearly; the helpdesk is +352 800 21112 (helpdesk@chequeservice.lu). Apply as soon as you have an address, because the central districts have waiting lists, and enrol through the city's Service Enfance for the municipal crèches.

Schools

The city has two of the six tuition-free public international schools: the International School Michel Lucius (primary at 1 avenue Sax, secondary at 157 avenue Pasteur in Limpertsberg — English-medium, IGCSE and A-levels, classes of 18–20 in primary and 24 in secondary, Luxembourgish an hour a week from Year 1 and French or German from Year 3, free buses for secondary) and the École internationale Gaston Thorn in Cessange (French, German and English sections). Michel Lucius closed its 2026–27 applications on 15 March 2026, answered by mid-May, and warns of unprecedented demand; families it cannot place are pointed to the Differdange–Esch international school (EIDE). The private International School of Luxembourg in Merl, St George's in Hamm, the European Schools on Kirchberg and in Bertrange and the French Lycée Vauban in Gasperich are compared, with their 2026–27 fees, in the next section. The public Luxembourgish schools are free and trilingual, and manageable for children who arrive before six.

Hospitals and doctors

The Centre Hospitalier de Luxembourg (CHL) at 4 rue Ernest Barblé in Belair (+352 44 11 11) has the children's hospital, the KannerKlinik, at the same address (paediatric emergencies +352 44 11 31 33). The Hôpitaux Robert Schuman group runs the Hôpital Kirchberg at 9 rue Edward Steichen and the Clinique Bohler (maternity, and paediatric emergencies) at number 5 on the same street (+352 286 21 000 for both), and the ZithaKlinik in the Gare–Hollerich quarter (+352 286 31 000; the block between the rue Sainte-Zithe and the rue d'Anvers), with an imaging centre at the Cloche d'Or. Call 112 for an ambulance and to learn which hospital is on emergency duty that day, 113 for police. Choose a GP near home as your médecin référent; consultations cost €59.50, of which the CNS pays 88%.

Pharmacies out of hours

The duty rota runs from 08:00 to 08:00 the next day with eight to ten pharmacies open nationally on any given day, listed on pharmacie.lu; in the city the rota includes the pharmacies des Capucins, Ginkgo, Goedert, du Cents, de la Liberté and Place de Strasbourg. A duty visit carries a surcharge of €6.87 between 19:00 and 22:00 and on Sundays and holidays 08:00–19:00, and €15.11 between 22:00 and 08:00.

Energy, water, waste

Enovos supplies most households and Creos runs the grid; the city bills water and, once a year, the bins. The waste tax is by bin size, and it is not small:

A family that sorts well lives on a 60-litre grey bin and saves €450 a year against the 240-litre one; the recycling centre and the glass and clothing containers are free. Sorting is enforced, and the collection calendar is per street on vdl.lu.

The Indian consular desk

The Honorary Consulate General of India runs its desk at The Paladium, 10A rue du Puits, Bonnevoie, open Wednesday and Thursday 13:00–17:00 only, taking passport, OCI and visa applications for processing by the Embassy in Brussels. Selvaraj Alagumalai has been honorary consul general since April 2025. Fill the online form first and bring the originals. For a passport emergency out of hours there is a Brussels mobile number for passports and another for visa and OCI queries, both on hcgiluxembourg.lu, and the Embassy's visa line (+32 2 627 08 12) answers weekday mornings 08:00–12:00. Most Indian families in the city use the free public system — the Luxembourgish schools for children who arrive young, the international sections at Michel Lucius and Gaston Thorn for those who arrive older — and the private schools are the fallback when the free places run out, or the choice when an employer pays. The fees below are the schools' own published figures for 2026–27 unless marked otherwise.

How the European Schools work for a non-EU family

The European Schools exist for the children of EU staff (Category I, free). Category II is for children of employers with an agreement; Category III is everyone else, admitted only after the first two categories are counted and only where a section has room — so a Category III place in the English section is far from guaranteed, and the schools steer Category III families toward the smaller sections (which is how a Gasperich family ends up with a child in the Danish or Greek section speaking fluent English at break). The 2026–27 rules were published in February 2026; an Amazon or fund employee is Category III.

Vauban's timetable, as a model for the private schools

Vauban opened its 2026–27 applications online at 14:00 on Monday 12 January 2026, held admission commissions on 25 February, 25 March, 22 April and 20 May (dossiers due the Friday before), tested every applicant from Grande Section up in French and mathematics (secondary tests on 21–22 April, 12–13 May and 2–3 June), and asked for the €600 deposit within eight days of an offer; applications after 10 July were examined only against remaining places, and children legally domiciled in Luxembourg had priority. ISL and St George's run rolling admissions with their own tests; the European Schools take applications in the spring. Whichever route, the calendar starts in January for the following September.

Cricket

The Pierre Werner Cricket Ground in Walferdange, ten minutes north of the city, is the national ground, owned by the Optimists Cricket Club — founded in 1976, the oldest club in the country, and the only one that plays in both the Belgian Cricket League and the Luxembourg league. The Luxembourg Cricket Federation's men's clubs in 2026 are the Optimists, Star CC (1997, looking for a ground of its own), Communities CC (1997), CSK CC (indoor), Heritage CC, Lux Knights CC, the Luxembourg Wolves (junior development), Titans CC, the University of Luxembourg CC and Warriors CC; all play the summer outdoor league and the winter indoor league, and most are South Asian in the dressing room. The federation's site lists the clubs and the indoor venues. The women's game arrived too: Luxembourg's women played a T20 international against Belgium at the Pierre Werner ground on 23 August 2026. For a newcomer the pattern is the same as everywhere in the Benelux — turn up at a Sunday practice in April, and you have twenty friends by May.

Cinema

Kinepolis Kirchberg has a standing "Indian Movies" programme — the big Hindi, Telugu and Tamil releases on their opening weekends — and it is the one place in the country where the whole South Asian community sits in the same dark room; the programme is on kinepolis.lu.

Dance and music

LuxInDancers teaches Bollywood, Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi and freestyle to children and adults (luxindancers.com; the venues and fees are on its pages), and the University of Luxembourg's campus-life programme runs Bollywood free-style classes open to residents. IACAL trains children in classical dance and stages them at its festivals; the Tamil Sangam runs Bharatanatyam alongside its Tamil school and yoga classes at the Esch youth hostel (€10 a month per activity in 2026); and the IAL's autumn concert — a sarod and tabla recital at Neimënster on 27 September 2026 — is the classical-music fixture. Garba and dandiya nights in October, and the DJ night that closes LuxUtsav's Durga Puja, are the community's dance floor.

The city's South Asian community is Indian first and Nepali second, and it has grown a Pakistani institution of its own in the last three years.

Nepali

About 450 Nepali residents in some 120 households — 409 Nepali nationals in the 2023 count, up from 195 in 2014 — many of whom arrived from the late 1990s as restaurant cooks and now run or work in the Namaste, Himalaya, Sikkim, Tibet and Diyalo kitchens. The NRNA Luxembourg (on Facebook) organises Teej (14 September 2026), Dashain (11–21 October 2026, with tika around the 20th) and Tihar, and the Hindu Forum Luxembourg was founded in 2018 with a Nepali vice-president and serves both communities. The development charity Association Luxembourg-Népal (since 1991) is the Luxembourgers' side of the relationship. One difference worth repeating: an Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi or Sri Lankan driving licence converts in Luxembourg within the first year; a Nepali licence does not, and the holder sits the theory and practical exams.

Pakistani

The Pakistan Association Luxembourg (PAL), founded in 2023 at 15 rue Gabriel de Marie (+352 661 444 531; info@pal-asbl.lu), held its first Eid celebration on 21 June 2024 at the Centre Culturel Bonnevoie for about 350 guests and has since run Ramadan bazaars and Eid events at the Centre Sociétaire et Sportif, 29 rue de Strasbourg in the Gare quarter, plus career counselling for students — there were 62 Pakistani students at the University of Luxembourg in June 2024. Prayer is at Le Juste Milieu in Bonnevoie and the Mamer centre; cricket at the Walferdange clubs. A separate Pakistan Forum Luxembourg also has a web presence.

Bangladeshi

The Bangladeshi presence is small and largely professional, organised through a business chamber rather than a diaspora association; the Embassy of Bangladesh in Brussels is accredited to Luxembourg, and Bengali families from both sides of the border find their Durga Puja with LuxUtsav in October and their Pohela Boishakh in April with the Brussels community.

Sri Lankan Tamil

Sri Lankan Tamils find Pongal, Tamil New Year and a Saturday Tamil school with the Tamil Sangam Luxembourg at the Esch youth hostel (27 boulevard J.F. Kennedy, Esch-sur-Alzette), and the nearest Tamil temple is the Sri Maha Mariamman temple at Sulzbach in the Saarland. The four embassies — Nepal, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka — are in Brussels, two and a half hours by train, and their contacts are in the Belgium guide.

Everything else on this page — the Bierger-Center's three days, the CNS, the free tram, the crèche hours, the rents by quarter, the school fees — applies identically to all five passports. The Namaste kitchen on the rue de Strasbourg, where a Nepali family has fed the whole community for eighteen years, is the best argument that the distinctions matter less here than at home.
