Where to celebrate Diwali in Sydney

The Hindu Council’s Deepavali Fair at Blacktown Showground (24–25 October) is the big one, forty minutes west by train; in the city, Diwali After Dark at Darling Harbour (24 October), the Diwali brunch at the Amora (31 October), Jashn-e-Diwali at ARQ and Blockbuster Diwali at Blackbird Cafe and on George Street (6–7 November), and the harbour Diwali party cruise (13 November).

If it is your first one

  • Book restaurant tables two weeks ahead — the Diwali weekend fills every Indian restaurant in town.
  • Check local fireworks rules before buying any; most European towns restrict them to New Year.
  • Sweets (mithai) can be ordered from Indian grocers a week ahead; many deliver nationwide.
  • The big city events sell tickets in advance and sell out; children under a certain age are usually free.
