Indian businesses and services in Auckland, New Zealand

Sandringham Road, a few kilometres south of Auckland's city centre, is the closest thing the city has to a Little India, with sari shops, grocers, sweet shops and restaurants along the main road. Further south, Old Papatoetoe has a mix of Indian and Indo-Fijian businesses, and Mt Roskill, Manurewa and Takanini also have large South Asian communities. Auckland's Indian population includes long-settled Gujarati and Punjabi families, a substantial Indo-Fijian community, and many more recent arrivals from across India, Sri Lanka, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

The Gurdwara Sri Kalgidhar Sahib in Takanini is one of the largest gurdwaras in New Zealand, and its langar is open to everyone. Hindu temples are found throughout the suburbs, including the Bharatiya Mandir on Balmoral Road, near Sandringham, and there are mosques with large South Asian congregations, especially in South Auckland.

Auckland's Diwali festival, held in the city centre in October or November, has drawn large crowds for many years with food stalls, dance and music. Holi, Vaisakhi, Navratri and Onam are celebrated by their communities too. Sandringham Road is well served by buses from the city, while Papatoetoe has its own train station, so both can be reached without a car. Weekend afternoons are the busiest time in both areas, and parking around Sandringham's shops can be tight.
