Indian businesses and services in Dublin, Ireland

Most of Ireland's Indian community arrived this century, and it has quickly become one of the country's larger immigrant groups. Doctors and nurses recruited into the health service, engineers at the technology companies clustered around the Docklands, students and their families account for much of it, and Indian-born residents now live in nearly every part of the city.

There is no single Indian quarter. Families have settled in suburbs right around the city as well as closer in, and Indian grocery shops have followed them, so most suburbs with a sizeable community now have at least one. In the north inner city, Moore Street and the streets just off it have Asian food shops among the market stalls, phone shops and butchers.

Hindu, Sikh and ISKCON communities all have places of worship in the Dublin area, and smaller groups meet in community halls. Diwali is now a regular fixture of the city's autumn, celebrated in temples, by regional associations and at public events, and Dublin City Council has supported a public Diwali celebration since 2008; the date follows the Hindu lunar calendar and usually falls in October or November. Associations from Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Punjab and elsewhere are active and are often the quickest way to find a cricket club, a language class or a festival programme. Between them, the Luas, DART, commuter trains and buses reach most of the suburbs.
