Indian businesses and services in Berlin, Germany

Berlin has no Indian neighbourhood, and that is part of what makes its South Asian community distinctive: it is young, recent and scattered across the city. Over the past decade the startup and technology sector, together with Germany's skilled-migration routes such as the EU Blue Card, has drawn many Indian engineers, researchers and students. They join older communities of Sri Lankan Tamils, many of whom came as refugees in the 1980s, as well as Pakistani and Bangladeshi families. Indian grocery stores and restaurants are found in most central districts, from Kreuzberg and Neukölln to Charlottenburg, Prenzlauer Berg and Friedrichshain, without a single dominant cluster.

The Sri Ganesha Hindu Temple in Hasenheide park, Neukölln, was consecrated in June 2026 after some twenty years of building and is the largest Hindu temple in Germany; there are other Hindu, Sikh and Muslim congregations across Berlin. Student associations at the universities and regional associations for Bengali, Tamil, Malayali, Telugu and other communities organise much of the cultural calendar.

Diwali is a highlight of the year for many Indian Berliners, usually celebrated in hired halls with food, dance and music. The Karneval der Kulturen in Kreuzberg, held around Whitsun, has included South Asian groups. Public transport covers the whole city well, so it is easy to move between the scattered shops and venues without a car, and community chat groups are the quickest way to hear about events.
