Cost of living in the UAE for an Indian family, couple and bachelor in 2026: Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah rent, school fees, groceries and the salary you need
In October 2026 a vegetarian Indian family of four in a two-bedroom flat in Al Nahda or International City, with two children at a budget CBSE school and no car, spends about AED 15,700 a month in Dubai (₹4.1 lakh at ₹25.86 to the dirham); the same family spends about AED 14,300 (₹3.7 lakh) in Sharjah with a car for the Dubai commute and about AED 15,500 (₹4 lakh) in Abu Dhabi. A couple in a one-bedroom spends about AED 9,850 (₹2.5 lakh), a single professional in a studio about AED 7,000 (₹1.8 lakh) and a bachelor in a shared-room bedspace about AED 2,500 (₹65,000). There is no income tax, so a family breaks even on a salary of about AED 16,000 in Dubai and saves on AED 20,000–25,000, far above the AED 4,000 the law asks of anyone sponsoring a spouse and children; rent and school fees are about 60% of the family budget.
1.The honest answer: monthly budgets for a family, a couple and a single professional, in dirhams and rupees
Correct or addContents ↑Every "cost of living in Dubai for an Indian family" search is really asking three things: what a month costs, whether the salary on the offer letter covers it, and what is left to send home. The numbers below are built line by line from 2026 sources: Bayut’s and Property Finder’s rent reports, the DEWA tariff, RTA’s nol fares, the October 2026 fuel prices, the school fees KHDA, ADEK and Sharjah regulate, and Carrefour UAE’s shelf prices on 17 October 2026. Where no published figure exists the line is ours and marked estimate. There is no income tax on salaries, so the monthly figure on an offer letter is very nearly what reaches the bank; the only payroll deduction is the ILOE unemployment insurance of AED 5 or AED 10.
Rupees. The European Central Bank’s reference rates for 16 October 2026 put the euro at ₹106.864 and $1.1253, which makes the dollar ₹94.97; at the dirham’s fixed peg of AED 3.6725 to the dollar, AED 1 = ₹25.86. Every rupee figure on this page uses that rate and is rounded, so AED 10,000 is about ₹2.59 lakh.
A family of four in Dubai (two adults, two children at a budget Indian school, two-bedroom flat in Al Nahda or International City, no car)
| Line (October 2026) | A month | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, two-bedroom flat at AED 75,000 a year | AED 6,250 | Bayut H1 2026: Al Nahda AED 72,000, International City AED 82,000 |
| Dubai Municipality housing fee, 5% of the rent, billed with DEWA | AED 310 | u.ae |
| DEWA electricity and water, averaged over the year | AED 650 | DEWA slab tariff; estimate (about AED 375 in January, AED 800 in August) |
| Home broadband and two mobile plans | AED 600 | du Home Starter AED 389 plus VAT; two prepaid SIMs about AED 100 each (estimate) |
| Groceries, vegetarian, supermarket plus Indian grocer | AED 2,000 | basket section below; estimate |
| Household, toiletries, cleaning | AED 250 | estimate |
| Transport: a two-zone nol pass, pay-as-you-go for the second adult, some taxis | AED 500 | RTA, AED 230 a month for the pass; estimate for the rest |
| School fees, two children at a budget CBSE school | AED 1,850 | KHDA-regulated fees of AED 7,400–15,800 a year (Gulf News, August 2026) |
| School bus, books, uniforms, activities | AED 1,200 | bus AED 3,500–9,000 a year a child (SchoolVita); estimate |
| Health insurance for the spouse and children, co-payments | AED 400 | estimate; the employer insures the employee |
| Family residence visas, renewed every two years, spread monthly | AED 400 | estimate |
| Clothes, shoes, children’s things | AED 350 | estimate |
| Eating out, outings, festivals, temple | AED 800 | estimate |
| ILOE, subscriptions, phone insurance | AED 100 | ILOE AED 5; estimate |
| Total | about AED 15,700 | about ₹4.1 lakh |
Add AED 2,000 for a car (finance on a used sedan, insurance, petrol at October’s AED 4.28 a litre and Salik; the transport section shows the working), AED 3,150 for a full-day nursery place if a child is under four (Numbeo’s Dubai average) and AED 550–600 for a part-time cleaner four hours a week. A family that wants a three-bedroom villa in Mirdif pays about AED 142,000 a year in rent instead of AED 75,000, which adds about AED 5,900 a month with the housing fee. The realistic Dubai range is therefore AED 15,700–24,000 a month (₹4.1–6.2 lakh) for a family of four, and rent and school fees are about 60% of it whichever end you are at.
The same family in Sharjah (two-bedroom in Al Nahda or Al Taawun, one adult driving to Dubai)
| Line (October 2026) | A month | Where the number comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Rent, two-bedroom at about AED 55,000 a year | AED 4,600 | Bayut via Khaleej Times, October 2026: all-size averages AED 46,896 (Al Nahda), AED 49,600 (Al Taawun); two-bedroom estimate |
| Tenancy attestation, 4% of the rent, spread over the year | AED 185 | Sharjah Municipality rate reported by Gulf News — budget it, but ask: Gulf News also reads Sharjah’s 2024 tenancy law as putting the certification fee on the landlord |

| Family visa renewals, spread monthly | AED 400 | estimate |
| Clothes | AED 350 | estimate |
| Eating out and leisure | AED 700 | estimate |
| ILOE and the rest | AED 100 | estimate |
| Total | about AED 14,300 | about ₹3.7 lakh |
If both parents work in Sharjah and there is no car, the same family spends about AED 12,500 (₹3.2 lakh). Sharjah saves about AED 1,800 a month on rent and fees against Dubai and gives most of it back on the road, so the arithmetic works best for families whose jobs are in Sharjah, Ajman or the northern edge of Dubai. Abu Dhabi, in its own section below, comes to about AED 15,500 (₹4 lakh) for the same family in Mohammed Bin Zayed City or Musaffah with a car, helped by a law that makes the employer insure the spouse and three children.

Rents are Bayut’s H1 2026 averages (one-bedrooms AED 56,000 in Al Nahda and AED 61,000 in International City, studios AED 41,000–44,000) and Property Finder’s AED 65,000 for a Karama one-bedroom; the bedspace is Bedflow’s July 2026 range of AED 600–950 with electricity, cooling and wifi included. The bachelors section explains each option.
The salary that covers each
- A family of four. With no income tax, a salary of about AED 16,000 a month covers the Dubai budget with nothing left; AED 20,000 leaves about AED 4,300 (₹1.1 lakh) without a car, and AED 25,000 about AED 7,300 (₹1.9 lakh) with one. The legal minimum to sponsor a spouse and children is AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 with accommodation provided. That is a visa rule, not a budget: a family on AED 8,000 lives in a shared flat in Sharjah or keeps the children at school in India.
- A couple. About AED 10,000 between you covers the one-bedroom budget; two salaries of AED 8,000 and AED 6,000 leave about AED 4,150 (₹1.1 lakh).
- A single professional. AED 7,000 covers a studio, AED 4,600 a room in a shared flat. On AED 10,000 the studio leaves AED 3,000 (₹78,000) and the room AED 5,400 (₹1.4 lakh), which is why so many single Indians share for their first two years.
- The comfortable line. A three-bedroom villa or large flat, a car, a yearly trip to India for four and AED 5,000 a month saved comes to about AED 30,000 in Dubai and about AED 21,500 in Sharjah (estimate).
The rest of this page shows the working: salaries and what is left, housing and bills, the Indian grocery basket, rents area by area in Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi, schools, health insurance, transport, visas and fees, the bachelor and couple options, the India side, the comparison with Bangalore and a first-month checklist. For the jobs and salary ranges those budgets attach to, see jobs in the UAE for Indians.
2.Salaries and what is left: no income tax, the package, and how much a family can send home
Correct or addContents ↑The UAE taxes no salary, collects no social security from expatriates and runs no pension scheme for them, so the gap between gross and net that dominates the British or Canadian version of this page barely exists here. What replaces it is the package: a UAE salary is quoted as basic pay plus a housing allowance, a transport allowance and, at the better employers, annual flights, family medical insurance and a schooling allowance. Read the split before you compare offers. End-of-service gratuity is worked out on basic pay only, so is the Golden-visa salary test, and a housing allowance paid monthly does not help with a rent that is due in one to four cheques a year unless the employer advances it, so ask.
What people earn
The jobs guide has the 2026 recruiter ranges in full. In short: accountant AED 6,000–18,000 a month, software developer AED 12,000–35,000, registered nurse AED 8,000–18,000 at the larger hospitals, teacher AED 8,000–18,000, hotel staff AED 3,500–7,000 with accommodation, and Indian-owned SMEs paying graduates AED 3,000–5,000. Numbeo’s crowd-sourced average take-home pay in October 2026 was AED 13,111 in Dubai (₹3.4 lakh), AED 10,750 in Abu Dhabi and AED 8,089 in Sharjah: below the family-of-four budget in every emirate, which is the plainest way to say that a family on one average salary does not live the way the first table assumes.
What a month leaves, by salary
| Monthly salary (= take-home) | Family of four, Dubai, no car (AED 15,700) | Family of four, Sharjah, one car (AED 14,300) | Couple, one-bedroom, Dubai (AED 9,850) | Single, studio, Dubai (AED 7,000) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AED 8,000 | short by AED 7,700 | short by AED 6,300 | short by AED 1,850 | AED 1,000 left |
| AED 12,000 | short by AED 3,700 | short by AED 2,300 | AED 2,150 left | AED 5,000 left |
| AED 16,000 | AED 300 left | AED 1,700 left | AED 6,150 left | AED 9,000 left |
| AED 20,000 | AED 4,300 (₹1.1 lakh) | AED 5,700 (₹1.5 lakh) | AED 10,150 | AED 13,000 |
| AED 25,000 | AED 9,300 (₹2.4 lakh) | AED 10,700 (₹2.8 lakh) | AED 15,150 | AED 18,000 |
What is left to send home
Two things move these numbers more than the salary itself. The first is housing: an employer that provides a flat, or pays the housing allowance a year in advance so you can write one cheque and negotiate a lower rent, is worth AED 5,000–6,000 a month to a family. The second is a second salary: many Indian couples in Dubai both work, and the second income usually pays for the car, the part-time help and the nursery that make two jobs possible, with the rest saved. Gratuity is the third, slower one: 21 days of basic pay for each of the first five years, so a basic of AED 8,000 builds about AED 5,600 a year that is paid when you leave. The routes that do not eat the margin when you send money home are on sending money to India from the UAE. Remember the first year carries the one-off costs in the checklist at the end, which usually swallow most of the first year’s savings.
VAT and the rest
VAT is 5% on most of what you buy, including groceries, restaurants, phone and internet bills and fuel, and since 1 June 2026 on Salik tolls and Parkin parking; residential rent and local public transport are exempt, and core school tuition and healthcare are zero-rated (confirm any edge case on the Federal Tax Authority’s site). There is no council tax and no property tax for a tenant: the 5% housing fee in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and the 4% lease attestation in Sharjah play that role, and the next section prices them.
3.Housing and bills: cheques, deposits, Ejari, the 5% housing fee, DEWA, cooling and the internet
Correct or addContents ↑Rent is the biggest line in every UAE budget and the one that changes most between emirates, between areas and between a studio and a family flat; the three area sections below give the figures. This one is about how renting works and what it costs on top.
How a lease works
- A year, paid in cheques. A residential lease normally runs for a year and is paid in post-dated cheques handed over at signing, in one payment or several as agreed with the landlord (u.ae). Fewer cheques usually buys a lower rent; agents say landlords add 5–10% for six or twelve cheques. A quarter of the year’s rent on day one is the normal first cheque for an Indian family.
- Security deposit: about 5% of the annual rent for an unfurnished flat and 10% for a furnished one, refunded when you leave the flat as you found it.
- Agency commission: usually 5% of the annual rent plus 5% VAT, paid once to the broker; on a AED 75,000 flat that is AED 3,937.50. A listing direct from a landlord or developer avoids it.
- Registration. Dubai leases are registered in Ejari with the Dubai Land Department, Abu Dhabi leases in Tawtheeq, Sharjah leases with Sharjah Municipality, and registration is compulsory before water, electricity and telecoms can be connected. Ejari costs about AED 125–220 depending on where and how you register.
- DEWA deposit: AED 2,000 for a flat and AED 4,000 for a villa, refundable, plus about AED 130 in connection charges.
- Rent increases. In Dubai a landlord may raise the rent at renewal only by comparison with the area’s average rent, as RERA’s rent-increase calculator shows under Law 43 of 2013. Check the calculator before you agree to a new figure.
The fees that come with the rent
Dubai charges tenants a housing fee to Dubai Municipality of 5% of the annual rent, split into twelve and added to the DEWA bill: AED 312.50 a month on a AED 75,000 flat, AED 175 on a AED 42,000 studio. Abu Dhabi charges a municipality fee that u.ae gives as 5% of the rental value or the rental index, whichever is higher, added to the water and electricity bill over twelve months once the lease is in Tawtheeq; many older guides still say 3%, so confirm the rate on TAMM on the day. Sharjah charges a one-off attestation fee of 4% of the annual rent on residential leases, raised from 2% in 2016 (commercial leases 5%); confirm it on the day too.
DEWA: electricity and water
DEWA charges residential electricity in monthly slabs of 23, 28, 32 and 38 fils per kWh (up to 2,000 kWh, up to 4,000, up to 6,000 and above) plus a fuel surcharge of about 6 fils per kWh, and water at about AED 7.70 a cubic metre for the first 27, then AED 8.80 and AED 10.12, plus meter charges, a sewerage charge and 5% VAT (Property Finder’s February 2026 breakdown; the surcharge moves, so check DEWA’s own page). Air-conditioning is the whole story. Our worked example for a two-bedroom flat: in August, 2,000 kWh and 25 cubic metres of water come to about AED 810 with VAT; in January, 700 kWh and 20 cubic metres about AED 375; across the year about AED 600–650 a month before the housing fee. A studio is roughly half that.
District cooling
Many towers in JLT, Dubai Marina, Business Bay and the newer communities are cooled by a district-cooling company that bills separately from DEWA, with its own deposit and a monthly capacity charge whether or not you switch the cooling on. "Chiller free" in an advert means the landlord pays it; a flat without that line can cost several hundred dirhams a month more in summer (estimate). Many older buildings in Karama, Al Nahda and International City use their own units on the DEWA meter instead. Ask which before you sign.
Internet and phones
du’s cheapest home plan, du Home Starter at 250 Mbps with a TV package, was AED 389 a month plus VAT on 17 October 2026 (AED 311 for the first three months on an offer); e& sells comparable plans, so compare both at your building. Numbeo’s users put broadband at AED 335 and a mobile plan with 10 GB at AED 199. Prepaid SIMs from du, e& and Virgin Mobile cost less for light users (estimate: AED 50–100 a month). Keep the Indian SIM alive for bank OTPs.
A family in a Dubai two-bedroom therefore budgets about AED 1,550 a month for bills on top of rent: AED 310 housing fee, AED 650 DEWA, AED 600 internet and phones, more in August and less in January. The directory lists Indian-run estate agents, movers and typing centres that members have reviewed.
4.The Indian grocery basket in October 2026: shelf prices, and what a vegetarian family spends in a month
Correct or addContents ↑Indian groceries are easy in the UAE. Every hypermarket (Lulu, Carrefour, Union Coop and the Indian-run chains) carries Aashirvaad, India Gate, Peacock, Amul and the southern brands, and Karama, Bur Dubai, Al Nahda and Sharjah’s Rolla have the small grocers for curry leaves, drumsticks and banana leaves. The prices below were read from Carrefour UAE’s online shop on 17 October 2026, because its prices are public and dated; Lulu’s and Union Coop’s websites did not show us prices that day, and their weekly offers are worth checking against these. Milk, eggs and vegetables are Numbeo’s crowd-sourced Dubai averages for October 2026. Shelf prices include the 5% VAT.
| Item | Price, October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Atta, 10 kg | Aashirvaad AED 53.79; Al Baker chakki fresh AED 35.79; Carrefour chakki atta AED 25.00 on offer (AED 31.29) |
| Basmati rice | India Gate Super 5 kg AED 52.79; Tilda 5 kg AED 43.29; Carrefour 1121 XXL 10 kg AED 74.99 |
| South Indian rice, 5 kg | Peacock Sona Masuri AED 23.29 on offer (AED 25.99); Peacock Palakkadan Matta AED 27.19 (AED 30.79) |
| Toor dal, 1 kg | Al Zahraa AED 8.99, Peacock AED 11.49, Carrefour AED 13.79, Bayara AED 15.99 |
| Chana, moong, urad, masoor dal, 1 kg | Al Zahraa AED 6.99–7.99 |
| Besan, 1 kg | Bayara AED 11.49 |
| Ghee, 1 litre | Gowardhan AED 50.99, RKG AED 56.29, Amul cow ghee AED 57.17 |
| Paneer | Farm Fresh 200 g AED 7.99; 1 kg AED 36.49 |
| Cooking oil | Carrefour sunflower oil 5 litres AED 65.79; 4-litre cooking oils AED 28.79–37.29 |
| Milk, eggs, vegetables (Numbeo, Dubai) | milk AED 6.65 a litre; 12 eggs AED 12.37; tomatoes AED 5.21 a kilo; onions AED 3.58; potatoes AED 4.16; white rice AED 9.22 |
Three patterns. Own brands and the Gulf mills are much cheaper than the Indian national brands: a 10 kg bag of chakki atta from a supermarket brand costs half an Aashirvaad bag, and many families mix the two. Southern rice is cheap and basmati is not: Sona Masuri and Matta cost AED 4.60–5.50 a kilo, India Gate Super AED 10.56. Ghee and paneer are the dear staples, at AED 50–57 a litre and AED 36 a kilo; many families bring ghee and spices back from India in the checked bag. Many staples carried a promotion that day ("add three, 30% off the third", "ends in two days"), so the monthly shop is cheaper for anyone who buys on offer and stores.
The monthly total
Our arithmetic for a vegetarian family of four cooking at home (October 2026 prices, labelled estimate): atta 10 kg AED 40; rice 10 kg AED 70; dals 4 kg AED 40; ghee 1 litre AED 55; oil 5 litres AED 45; milk 30 litres AED 200; curd and paneer AED 120; onions 8 kg AED 30; tomatoes 6 kg AED 31; other vegetables and greens AED 300; fruit AED 200; spices and pickles AED 50; tea, sugar, bread, eggs, biscuits and snacks AED 250; nuts and dry fruit AED 80. That is about AED 1,500 a month for the food itself, and AED 1,800–2,200 once school snacks, juice, festival sweets, a takeaway and the things children ask for in the aisle are added: the AED 2,000 used in the Dubai budget, about ₹52,000. A family that eats meat and fish most days spends AED 2,500–3,000 (estimate).
Eating out is where the UAE gets expensive fast. Numbeo’s users put a meal at an inexpensive restaurant at AED 47 a head; a cafeteria thali or a dosa in Karama is far cheaper (estimate: AED 15–25), and a family dinner at a mid-range Indian restaurant is AED 200–300 (estimate). The lunchbox most Indian professionals carry to work is a saving of AED 500 a month.
5.Dubai rent by area: Al Nahda, International City, Karama, Deira, Silicon Oasis, Al Barsha, JLT and the villas
Correct or addContents ↑Bayut’s H1 2026 report described Dubai’s rental market as stable, with rents moderating and more choice for tenants. Its figures are advertised asking rents, which is what an agent will quote you; what tenants actually signed for was lower in the older areas: Al Nahda’s average asking rent was AED 64,000 against AED 55,668 transacted, International City’s AED 60,000 against AED 42,032. Use the asking figure to budget and the transacted one to negotiate.
| Area (2026, a year) | Studio | One-bedroom | Two-bedroom | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Al Nahda | AED 44,000 | AED 56,000 | AED 72,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
| International City | AED 41,000 | AED 61,000 | AED 82,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
| Deira | AED 40,000 | AED 66,000 | AED 109,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
| Karama | not published | AED 65,000 | not published | Property Finder, three months to April 2026 |
| Dubai Silicon Oasis | not published | AED 65,000 | not published | Property Finder, three months to April 2026 |

| Arjan | AED 53,000 | AED 79,000 | AED 116,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
| Jumeirah Lakes Towers | not published | AED 92,000 | not published | Binayah, 2026 listings |
| Business Bay | AED 73,000 | AED 104,000 | AED 148,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
| Dubai Marina | not published | AED 103,000 | AED 157,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
Divide by twelve for the month: an Al Nahda two-bedroom is AED 6,000 (₹1.55 lakh), an International City studio AED 3,420 (₹88,000), a JLT one-bedroom AED 7,670 (₹2 lakh). We found no 2026 average for Bur Dubai or Discovery Gardens in either index; ask in the groups before you sign there.
Where Indian families and singles actually live
- Karama and Bur Dubai are the old Indian heart of the city: walk-up buildings, the Green Line metro, the grocers and restaurants of Karama and Meena Bazaar, short commutes to Deira, DIFC and the Creek. Older flats, smaller kitchens, rents in the Property Finder band above.
- Al Nahda and Al Qusais, on the Sharjah border, are the cheapest metro-connected family areas in Dubai on Bayut’s figures, popular with families who want Dubai schools and Dubai addresses at close to Sharjah prices.
- International City is the cheapest of all for a studio or one-bedroom, with no metro (buses link it to the metro and the city), many Indian and South Asian tenants, and the Dragon Mart next door.
- Dubai Silicon Oasis and Mirdif are the family choices on the eastern side: DSO for flats near schools at AED 65,000 for a one-bedroom, Mirdif for villas.
- Al Barsha, JLT and Discovery Gardens serve the western job clusters (Media City, Internet City, DMCC, Jebel Ali). JLT is on the Red Line and pricier, often with district cooling billed separately.
- JVC and Arjan are the mid-tier newer towers where young Indian professionals and couples move once salaries rise, with no metro and a car or taxi for everything.
Villas and townhouses
Bayut’s affordable villa table for H1 2026 put a three-bedroom at AED 112,000 a year in DAMAC Hills 2, AED 142,000 in Mirdif and AED 147,000 in Dubai South; a four-bedroom in Mirdif was AED 166,000. These are the comfortable-line homes in the first section: about AED 9,300–12,300 a month before the housing fee, and a car is not optional.
Ask any landlord or agent for the rents recently signed in the same building, and check the area average on RERA’s rent calculator; a quoted rent far above both is a negotiating point.
7.Abu Dhabi: Musaffah, Mohammed Bin Zayed City, Khalifa City and the island, and an employer who must insure the family
Correct or addContents ↑Abu Dhabi is government, energy and the public hospitals, holds about 15% of the UAE’s Indian community, and costs much the same as Dubai for a family: rents are similar outside the island, school fees a little lower at the cheap end, and the law is kinder on health insurance. Bayut’s H1 2026 Abu Dhabi report and Property Finder’s May 2026 studio guide give the rents:
| Area (2026, a year) | Studio | One-bedroom | Two-bedroom | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Khalifa City | AED 39,000 | AED 59,000 | AED 104,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
| Al Khalidiyah | AED 50,000 | AED 84,000 | AED 116,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
| Al Reem Island | AED 70,000 | AED 94,000 | AED 128,000 | Bayut H1 2026 |
| Mohammed Bin Zayed City | about AED 34,000 | not published | not published | Property Finder, May 2026 |
| Al Shamkha | about AED 27,000 | not published | not published | Property Finder, May 2026 |
Villas: a three-bedroom averaged AED 132,000 in Shakhbout City, AED 133,000 in Al Reef and AED 206,000 in Khalifa City. Musaffah, the industrial city where many Indian workers and families live in the Shabiya blocks near the jobs and the CBSE schools, is not in either report; listings we saw in October 2026 put a one-bedroom there around AED 45,000–50,000 a year (estimate), and Mohammed Bin Zayed City’s two-bedrooms in the AED 65,000–75,000 band (estimate).
The fees, and the insurance rule
Leases are registered in Tawtheeq, and u.ae gives the municipality fee as 5% of the rent or the rental index, whichever is higher, added to the water and electricity bill over twelve months (older guides say 3%; confirm on TAMM). The big difference from Dubai is health: Abu Dhabi’s health insurance law obliges the employer to enrol the employee, the employee’s wife and three children under 18, and the Department of Health’s text puts the basic premium for them on the employer, who may not pass it on — so the AED 400 a month that a Dubai family spends on dependants’ cover largely disappears. Read the contract for a fourth child, an older child or a visiting parent, who need a separate policy.
Schools
ADEK regulates fees. Edarabia’s October 2026 listing of CBSE schools shows starting fees from AED 5,845 (The Model School, Musaffah) and AED 8,895 (Abu Dhabi Indian School, Muroor Street) to AED 10,715 (Sunrise English Private School, Shabiya), AED 12,595 (Global Indian International School), AED 15,560 (GEMS United Indian School), AED 16,220 (Bright Riders School, Mohammed Bin Zayed City) and AED 27,280 (Mayoor Private School). Doris reports Abu Dhabi Indian School Muroor at AED 5,560–11,690 a year for 2026–27, with a AED 500 registration fee.
The family budget
For a family of four in a two-bedroom in Mohammed Bin Zayed City or Musaffah with a car: rent AED 5,800 (AED 70,000 a year, estimate), municipality fee AED 290, utilities AED 600, internet and phones AED 600, groceries AED 2,000, household AED 250, car AED 1,800, school fees AED 1,500 for two children at about AED 9,000 each, bus and books AED 1,000, health co-payments AED 100, visa renewals AED 400, clothes AED 350, leisure AED 700 and the rest AED 100: about AED 15,500 a month (₹4 lakh). Numbeo’s users put Abu Dhabi’s utilities for an 85 m² flat at AED 701 and a monthly bus pass at about AED 98, and its family-of-four basket excluding rent at AED 12,839 against Dubai’s AED 14,706. A family on the island itself, in Al Khalidiyah or Al Reem, adds AED 3,000–4,500 a month in rent.
8.Children: Indian school fees in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, the extras, nursery, and the 2026–27 fee freeze
Correct or addContents ↑There is no free school place for most expatriate children in the UAE, so school fees are the second-largest line in a family budget after rent. Each emirate regulates its private schools: KHDA in Dubai, ADEK in Abu Dhabi and the Sharjah Private Education Authority in Sharjah. Most Indian-curriculum schools follow CBSE; a few, such as GEMS Modern Academy, teach the CISCE (ICSE and ISC) syllabus.
Dubai: the fee freeze and the cheap end
KHDA confirmed in May 2026 that private school fees in Dubai will not rise for the 2026–27 academic year, part of a support package for families. SchoolVita counts more than 40 Indian-curriculum schools in Dubai charging AED 6,000–30,000 a year, about AED 14,000 on average: the cheapest curriculum in the city. Gulf News’s August 2026 table of Very Good-rated schools gives the real numbers:
| Dubai school (KHDA rating Very Good) | Area | Annual tuition, lowest to highest grade |
|---|---|---|
| GEMS Our Own Indian School | Al Quoz | AED 7,389 (KG1) to AED 15,336 (Grade 12) |
| GEMS Our Own English High School | Al Warqa | AED 7,858 to AED 16,549 |
| The Indian High School | Oud Metha | AED 8,625 (Grade 5) to AED 13,815 (Grade 12) |
| Delhi Private School | Jebel Ali | AED 11,389 to AED 15,842 |
| JSS Private School | Al Wasl | AED 12,731 to AED 26,375 |
| Credence High School | Al Quoz | AED 17,673 to AED 29,486 |
| JSS International School | Jumeirah Village Circle | AED 17,214 to AED 41,513 |
| The Millennium School | Al Qusais | AED 18,308 to AED 26,906 |
| GEMS New Millennium School | Al Khail | AED 23,143 to AED 33,557 |
At the top of the Indian market, SchoolVita lists GEMS Modern Academy at AED 29,000–69,900 and Global Indian International School Dubai at AED 22,904–41,993. Our family budget assumes two children at about AED 11,100 a year each: AED 1,850 a month.
Abu Dhabi and Sharjah
In Abu Dhabi, starting fees at CBSE schools run from AED 5,845 in Musaffah to AED 16,220 in Mohammed Bin Zayed City (Edarabia, October 2026), with Abu Dhabi Indian School Muroor at AED 5,560–11,690 for 2026–27. In Sharjah, Mdares put the Indian-curriculum range at AED 2,700–15,120 with a typical fee of AED 7,200. The Abu Dhabi section and the Sharjah section have the names.
The extras nobody quotes
SchoolVita’s 2026–27 breakdown puts the extras at 15–30% above tuition: registration AED 500–2,500 (non-refundable), uniforms AED 800–2,000 a year, school transport AED 3,500–9,000 a year a child, a technology or device levy AED 1,500–4,000, textbooks AED 1,000–3,500, trips AED 500–3,000, and the canteen AED 3,000–6,000 if the child does not carry lunch. Those ranges are across all curricula; the budget Indian schools sit at the lower end. Our family budget allows AED 1,200 a month for the bus, books, uniforms and activities of two children.
Nursery and before KG1
Indian schools start at KG1, for children who are four. Below that, a full-day private nursery averaged AED 3,156 a month in Dubai, AED 2,905 in Abu Dhabi and AED 1,196 in Sharjah on Numbeo in October 2026. For a working couple with a toddler that is the largest single line after rent, and the reason many families bring a grandparent on a visit visa for the first years, or hire part-time help at AED 33–39 an hour through the booking platforms (ServiceMarket, excluding VAT).
Getting a seat
The good budget CBSE schools fill early. Register in the year before you need the seat, keep the child’s transfer certificate attested from India, and ask in the groups which schools have Grade 2 or Grade 7 places mid-year; waiting lists are where the AED 7,000 school becomes the AED 18,000 one.
9.Health insurance: who must pay for the family in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and what a basic plan covers
Correct or addContents ↑Health insurance is compulsory everywhere in the UAE, but who pays for the family depends on the emirate, and it is the line that most often surprises a new Dubai family.
Dubai
Dubai’s health insurance law (Law 11 of 2013) makes the employer insure the employee and bear the full cost. It does not oblige the employer to insure the family: the sponsor, which for a spouse and children is normally you, is responsible for insuring the dependants on your visa, and a visa will not be issued or renewed without it. Many employers include family cover in the package, so read the offer. The cheapest compliant plans for low earners and dependants were set at about AED 565–650 a year when the law was phased in; in 2026 a plan with a usable hospital network for a spouse or child is more like AED 1,200–2,500 a year each (estimate), and a comprehensive one several thousand. Our Dubai family budget allows AED 400 a month for three dependants plus co-payments.
Abu Dhabi
Abu Dhabi’s law (Law 23 of 2005) makes the employer enrol the employee, the employee’s wife and three children under 18. The Department of Health’s text puts the basic premium for those dependants on the employer, who may not pass it on. A fourth child, a child over 18 or a visiting parent needs a separate policy, and the contract decides who pays for that one. The Thiqa programme is for Emiratis.
Sharjah and the northern emirates
Since 1 January 2025 every private-sector employee and domestic worker in Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quwain, Ras Al Khaimah and Fujairah must hold health insurance as a condition of a new or renewed residence permit. The national basic plan costs AED 320 a year, sold for two years, with the second year refunded if the visa is cancelled; it has no waiting period for pre-existing conditions, takes workers up to 64 (older ones file a medical disclosure), and charges co-payments of 25% for outpatient visits (capped at AED 100 a visit), 20% for inpatient care (capped at AED 500 a visit and AED 1,000 a year) and up to 30% for medicines (capped at AED 1,500 a year), through a network of seven hospitals, 46 clinics and 45 pharmacies. MOHRE says workers’ family members can buy the same plan at the same price.
What you still pay
Co-payments are the hidden line: 20% of each consultation and prescription up to a cap is typical on basic and mid-range plans (estimate), dental and optical are usually excluded or capped, and maternity cover varies a lot between plans, so a couple planning a child should read that clause before choosing. A GP visit without insurance at a private clinic costs a few hundred dirhams (estimate). Many Indian families keep a habit from home: the annual health check, the dentist and the new glasses during the trip to India, where they cost a fraction. The ILOE unemployment insurance (AED 5 a month on a basic salary up to AED 16,000, AED 10 above) is a different scheme, covered in the jobs guide.
10.Transport: nol fares and passes, Salik, parking, October’s petrol prices and what a car really costs
Correct or addContents ↑The metro, buses and the nol card
Dubai’s metro, buses and trams run on the nol card, priced by zone. RTA’s own fare table:
| Nol (Dubai), October 2026 | One zone | Two zones | All zones |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single trip, Silver card | AED 3 | AED 5 | AED 7.50 |
| Single trip, Gold class | AED 6 | AED 10 | AED 15 |
| 30-day pass, Silver | AED 140 | AED 230 | AED 350 |
| 90-day pass, Silver | AED 330 | AED 550 | AED 830 |
| 365-day pass, Silver | AED 1,060 | AED 1,770 | AED 2,670 |
| 30-day pass, student | AED 70 | AED 115 | AED 175 |
Passes need a registered personalised card; children five and under travel free, and students get half price. A commuter crossing the city usually needs the two-zone or all-zone pass: AED 230–350 a month. Numbeo’s users put a monthly pass at about AED 98 in Abu Dhabi and AED 100 in Sharjah, where buses are the only public transport.
Taxis, Salik and parking
A Dubai taxi starts at AED 12 and runs about AED 2.57 a kilometre on Numbeo’s October figures, so a 10 km ride is about AED 35–40. Salik, Dubai’s road toll, charges AED 6.30 a crossing at peak and AED 4.20 off-peak including the 5% VAT that applies from 1 June 2026; peak hours are 6–10 am and 4–8 pm, Monday to Saturday, and crossings between 1 am and 6 am are free. Parkin’s street parking rose the same day from AED 4 to AED 4.20 an hour for a standard space.
Petrol in October 2026
The UAE Fuel Price Committee sets pump prices monthly. For October 2026: Super 98 AED 4.40 a litre, Special 95 AED 4.28, E-Plus 91 AED 4.21, diesel AED 4.80, up 16% on September. Khaleej Times reported that retail fuel prices have risen by more than 60% since the regional war began on 28 February 2026, so this line has moved more than any other in this year’s budgets, and it will move again on the first of next month.
What a car really costs
Our worked example for a family car in Dubai (estimate except where named): finance on a used sedan AED 900–1,200 a month; insurance AED 2,000–3,500 a year for a driver new to the UAE, about AED 170–290 a month; petrol for 1,500 km a month at 8 litres per 100 km, 120 litres at AED 4.28, about AED 515; Salik at two peak gates each way on 22 working days, about AED 555, or far less on routes that avoid the gates; registration, service and parking about AED 150. That is AED 2,000–2,600 a month, which is why the Dubai family budget leaves the car out and the Sharjah one cannot.
The licence
An Indian driving licence cannot be exchanged for a UAE one; India is not on RTA’s exchange list. A new driver opens a file with RTA, passes an eye test, theory and road tests, and pays AED 2,000–7,000 in driving-school fees depending on the lessons needed. The jobs guide explains RTA’s one-attempt route for experienced drivers. Budget the licence and two or three months of taxis before the car.
11.Visas and government fees: the family visa salary rule, what each dependant costs, renewals, VAT and ILOE
Correct or addContents ↑Who can bring a family
A resident employee can sponsor a spouse and children with a salary of at least AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 plus accommodation, regardless of job title (u.ae). Sons can be sponsored until 25; family members aged 18 and over must pass a medical fitness test at an approved UAE centre. Dependants keep a six-month grace period after their visas expire or are cancelled. Sponsoring parents has its own, much higher conditions, which GDRFA and ICP set and change, so most families bring parents on visit visas and should budget their trips that way; check the current rule on the day.
What each dependant costs
The authorities publish fees by service rather than as one family total, and the relocation guides add them up differently; budget roughly AED 3,500–6,500 per dependant for a first two-year residence visa in Dubai, covering the entry permit (about AED 500–600 from abroad, or a change of status of about AED 1,150–1,200 if they are already in the country on a visit visa), the medical test for those over 18 (about AED 320–500), the Emirates ID (about AED 270–390) and the residence issuance (about AED 500–600). Health insurance comes on top, see the health section. A family of four’s first year of visa and insurance paperwork runs to roughly AED 10,000–20,000 when the employer pays nothing. Renewals every two years cost less because there is no entry permit; our family budget spreads about AED 400 a month for three dependants (estimate).
The paper behind it
A spouse visa needs an attested marriage certificate and a child’s visa an attested birth certificate: attested in India (state, then MEA), by the UAE Embassy in India, and by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which charges AED 150 a document; with translation and typing, a marriage certificate costs about AED 500–1,200 all in. Do the Indian legs before you fly. A child’s Indian passport, and yours, will need renewing during a long stay; renewing an Indian passport in the UAE has its own guide.
The small recurring charges
- ILOE, the compulsory unemployment insurance: AED 5 a month on a basic salary up to AED 16,000, AED 10 above it, and an AED 400 fine for not subscribing. It is yours to buy, not the employer’s.
- VAT at 5% on most purchases (FTA), but not on residential rent.
- The housing fee (Dubai and Abu Dhabi, 5% of rent) or lease attestation (Sharjah, 4% once), covered in the housing section.
- Typing-centre and courier charges for each application: small sums that add up to a few hundred dirhams a year (estimate).
What the employer usually pays
By law the employer pays for the employee’s own work permit, residence visa, medical test, Emirates ID and health insurance, and may not recover them from you. The family’s visas and insurance are a matter for the contract: some employers pay all of them, many pay none. Ask in writing before you accept, because at AED 10,000–20,000 in the first year it is worth more than a small difference in salary.
12.Bachelors and couples: bedspace, a room, a studio or a one-bedroom, and what each month really costs
Correct or addContents ↑For a single Indian arriving in Dubai, housing decides everything: the same AED 8,000 salary is comfortable in a room and tight in a studio. The four common options, with the budgets from the first section:
Bedspace: about AED 2,500 a month all in
A bed in a shared room, the first home of most freshers and many workers. Bedflow’s July 2026 guide gives the monthly ranges: AED 600–800 in Deira and Al Ras, AED 600–900 in Bur Dubai and Karama, AED 650–950 in Al Qusais, Al Nahda and Hor Al Anz, AED 700–1,000 near Satwa and Al Wasl, and AED 900–1,200 for newer buildings or rooms shared by two or three. A legitimate bedspace includes electricity, water, air-conditioning and wifi, a wardrobe or locker, and shared kitchen and bathrooms; a price without those inclusions is a red flag. Partition rooms are also advertised. With food cooked in the shared kitchen or eaten at cafeterias, a nol pass and a phone, a bachelor lives on about AED 2,500 a month (₹65,000).
A room in a shared flat: about AED 4,600
A private room in a two- or three-bedroom flat shared with other professionals, usually found through the groups and the listing sites, costs about AED 1,800–2,500 a month for a standard room and more for one with its own bathroom (estimate), with bills shared. On our budget that comes to AED 4,600 (₹1.2 lakh), and on a salary of AED 10,000 it leaves AED 5,400 (₹1.4 lakh) to save or send home.
A studio of your own: about AED 7,000
Bayut’s H1 2026 averages put a studio at AED 40,000 in Deira, AED 41,000 in International City and AED 44,000 in Al Nahda, AED 53,000–54,000 in Arjan and JVC and AED 73,000 in Business Bay. On four cheques, a AED 42,000 studio needs AED 10,500 for the first cheque plus deposit, commission and the DEWA deposit, about AED 17,000 before the keys. With the housing fee, DEWA, internet, food, transport and a social life, the month is about AED 7,000 (₹1.8 lakh).
A couple in a one-bedroom: about AED 9,850
A one-bedroom was advertised at AED 56,000 in Al Nahda, AED 61,000 in International City, AED 65,000 in Karama and Silicon Oasis and AED 66,000 in Deira in 2026, AED 75,000 in Al Barsha and AED 79,000 in JVC. Add the spouse’s visa (AED 3,500–6,500 for the first two years) and insurance, two nol passes, and a couple spends about AED 9,850 a month (₹2.5 lakh). Two salaries of AED 8,000 and AED 6,000 leave AED 4,150; one salary of AED 10,000 leaves almost nothing, which is the honest case for the second job.
Food for one
Cooking is the saving: a single person who cooks rice, dal and sabzi and buys staples on offer spends about AED 600–800 a month on groceries (estimate), against AED 1,200 or more eating out. Office canteens, cafeterias in Karama and Bur Dubai, and home-cooked lunch-box services advertised in the groups fill the gap. Sharjah is rarely worth it for a single person: the rent saving of AED 1,000–1,500 a month disappears into the commute.
13.The India side: NRI status, what India still taxes, NRE and NRO accounts, and sending money home
Correct or addContents ↑No income tax in the UAE does not mean no tax anywhere. India taxes by residential status, and a UAE salary is free of Indian tax only while you are a non-resident.
Staying non-resident
Under the Income Tax Act 2025, in force from 1 April 2026, the rules carry over from the Finance Act 2020 unchanged. You are resident in India for a financial year if you spend 182 days or more there. If your Indian income (rent, interest, capital gains, an Indian salary) is more than ₹15 lakh, a shorter stay counts: 120 days in the year plus 365 days over the previous four makes you resident but not ordinarily resident (RNOR). And an Indian citizen with Indian income above ₹15 lakh who is not liable to tax in any other country is treated as a deemed RNOR whatever the days. Because the UAE taxes no salary, that last rule is the one for a UAE resident with large Indian income to read with a chartered accountant.
What India still taxes
As a non-resident you pay Indian tax on Indian income only: rent from an Indian flat, capital gains on Indian property, shares and mutual funds, interest on an NRO account (with tax deducted at source, shown as 30% in TaxGuru’s summary) and any Indian salary. Your UAE salary, UAE bank interest and foreign gains are not taxed in India while you are non-resident. File an Indian return if your Indian income is above the threshold or tax was deducted that you want back.
NRE and NRO
- An NRE account holds money earned abroad, in rupees, freely repatriable; its interest is exempt while you are an NRI or RNOR and becomes taxable only when you are fully resident again.
- An NRO account is for Indian income (rent, dividends, an Indian pension) and the savings you had before leaving; its interest is taxable.
- Convert your Indian savings account to NRO when you become non-resident, and open an NRE account for remittances before you leave if you can. When you return for good, both are converted to resident accounts.
Sending money home
At ₹25.86 to the dirham, a monthly AED 4,300 surplus is about ₹1.1 lakh and AED 10,000 is ₹2.59 lakh. Exchange houses, bank apps and specialist services differ in their rates more than in their fees; the comparison, the limits and the documents are on sending money to India from the UAE. This page gives no investment advice: what to do with the money once it arrives is a question for a SEBI-registered adviser, not a cost-of-living guide.
14.Is it worth it: Dubai against Bangalore at ₹25.86 to the dirham
Correct or addContents ↑The comparison people actually want is not dirhams against rupees but what is left at the end of the month. Numbeo’s crowd-sourced baskets (updated 15–17 October 2026; treat them as rough) put a family of four’s monthly costs excluding rent at AED 14,706 in Dubai (₹3.8 lakh) and ₹1,23,113 in Bangalore (AED 4,760): Dubai costs about three times as much for the same basket. Rent widens the gap: a three-bedroom flat outside the centre was AED 10,850 a month in Dubai (₹2.8 lakh) against ₹45,808 in Bangalore (AED 1,771), about six times. So a Dubai family lives at three to four times the cost of the same family in Bangalore.
Salaries move about as much. Numbeo’s average take-home pay is AED 13,111 in Dubai (₹3.4 lakh) and ₹87,335 in Bangalore (AED 3,377), close to four times, and a professional on a Dubai package earns more than that average. Put the budgets on this page together with real salaries:
| October 2026 | One earner, AED 20,000, Dubai, no car | One earner, AED 20,000, Sharjah, one car | Two earners, AED 15,000 + AED 10,000, Dubai, one car | Senior engineer, ₹2.5 lakh net, Bangalore |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Net income a month | AED 20,000 (₹5.2 lakh) | AED 20,000 (₹5.2 lakh) | AED 25,000 (₹6.5 lakh) | ₹2,50,000 (AED 9,670) |
| Family of four, two-bedroom | AED 15,700 | AED 14,300 | AED 18,300 (with a car and part-time help) | about ₹1,60,000 (estimate: ₹1.2 lakh costs plus ₹40,000 rent) |
| Left over | AED 4,300 (₹1.1 lakh) | AED 5,700 (₹1.5 lakh) | AED 6,700 (₹1.7 lakh) | ₹90,000 (AED 3,480) |
Read it plainly. A single Dubai salary of AED 20,000 leaves a family slightly more than a senior Bangalore engineer saves, and two salaries leave clearly more. But the Dubai number buys less security: there is no pension and no permanent residence, the visa ends with the job, and the school fees that Bangalore families also pay are joined by visa renewals, family insurance and rent in cheques. Gratuity (21 days of basic a year for five years, then 30) is the only built-in saving, and it is paid on leaving. The money case is therefore strongest for couples who both work, for single professionals who share a flat, and for anyone whose package includes housing or school fees; weakest for a single earner under AED 16,000 with two children at school. The first year, with deposits, furniture and family visas, is usually a loss against India.
The factors no table carries
The flight home is a few hours and the time difference an hour and a half, so a parent’s illness or a wedding is a weekend trip; grandparents visit on visit visas; Indian food, temples, cinema and festivals are everywhere, and Diwali and Onam are public events. Against that: summers from June to September that keep families indoors, a car-shaped city outside the metro lines, and the knowledge that the UAE is a long chapter with an ending, not a country you become part of. None of that is in the budget, and all of it is in the decision.
15.The first month’s costs: a checklist from family visas to the first rent cheque
Correct or addContents ↑Everything below is October 2026. The family column assumes a AED 75,000 two-bedroom in Dubai on four cheques; the single column a AED 42,000 studio or a room in a shared flat. Lines marked estimate vary with the employer, the season and how fast you find a flat.
| Cost | Family of four, two-bedroom in Dubai | Single professional |
|---|---|---|
| Residence visas for three dependants, if the employer does not pay | 3 × AED 3,500–6,500 = AED 10,500–19,500 | none |
| Attestation of marriage and birth certificates | AED 1,000–2,500, estimate | degree attestation if not done |
| Flights for the family, one way | AED 2,000–4,000, estimate | AED 500–1,000, estimate |
| Two to four weeks in a hotel apartment while you find a flat | AED 4,000–9,000, estimate | a bedspace month (AED 600–950) or AED 1,500–3,000 in a hotel |
| First rent cheque | AED 18,750 (a quarter) | AED 10,500 for the studio; about AED 2,000 for a room |
| Security deposit, 5% unfurnished | AED 3,750 | AED 2,100 |
| Agency commission, 5% plus VAT | AED 3,940 | AED 2,205 |
| Ejari, DEWA deposit and connection | about AED 2,350 | about AED 2,350 |
| Furniture for an unfurnished flat | AED 5,000–12,000 new; much less second-hand, estimate | AED 1,500–3,000, estimate |
| School registration, books and uniforms for two | AED 3,000–6,000 | none |
| SIMs, broadband installation, household kit | AED 500–1,000, estimate | AED 300–500, estimate |
| Cash to arrive with | AED 55,000–83,000 (₹14–21 lakh) if you pay the family’s visas; AED 42,000–59,000 (₹11–15 lakh) if the employer pays visas and flights | AED 20,000–25,000 (₹5.2–6.5 lakh) for the studio; AED 5,000–8,000 for a room |
The first salary is paid at the end of the first month through the Wage Protection System, so the family also needs a month of the budget in hand.
Three ways to make it smaller. Ask the employer, in writing, which of the family’s visas and insurance, the flights, a month of temporary housing and an advance on the housing allowance they pay; the range among UAE employers runs from nothing to all of it, and the advance is what lets you pay one cheque instead of four and negotiate the rent down. Arrive with the paperwork a landlord and a school want: attested certificates, the child’s transfer certificate, passport copies, the offer letter, so you take the first good flat rather than the first available one, and the two-week hotel does not become six. Buy the big things used: beds, a sofa, a dining table and a washing machine change hands constantly in the groups as families leave, and nobody will ever know. The tipping point in a family’s first-year budget is not the rent; it is the AED 10,000–20,000 of family visas and insurance, which a good employer pays and a careless offer letter leaves to you.

Correct or addContents ↑Every figure on this page is dated October 2026 and named to its source. Rents move with each Bayut and Property Finder report, petrol on the first of every month, school fees each academic year, and visa and insurance charges whenever the authorities change them. For the live answer:
- Ask: post the specific question. "Two-bed in Al Nahda for AED 70,000 on four cheques, is that fair in November 2026?", "Which CBSE school in Al Qusais has a Grade 3 seat?", "Did your employer pay the family’s visas and insurance?" People who signed a lease or paid a fee last month answer, and many of these questions have been asked before, so search first.
- Groups in the UAE: where someone is selling a sofa before flying home, looking for a flatmate in Karama, sharing a school-bus route or warning about an agent, every week.
- The directory: Indian grocers, restaurants, typing centres, movers, estate agents and clinics in the UAE, with members’ reviews.
- Indian events in the UAE: Diwali, Onam and community meet-ups, which is where newcomers compare rents in person.

Questions people ask
- How much does an Indian family of four need per month in Dubai in 2026?
- About AED 15,700 a month (₹4.1 lakh at ₹25.86 to the dirham) in October 2026 for a vegetarian family in a two-bedroom flat in Al Nahda or International City, with both children at a budget CBSE school and no car: AED 6,250 rent, AED 310 housing fee, AED 650 DEWA, AED 600 internet and phones, AED 2,000 groceries, AED 3,050 for school fees, bus and books, AED 800 for the family’s insurance and visa renewals, and the rest for transport, clothes and outings. A car adds about AED 2,000, a nursery place AED 3,150 and a three-bedroom villa in Mirdif about AED 5,900, so the realistic range is AED 15,700–24,000.
- What is the cost of living in Dubai for an Indian bachelor?
- It depends almost entirely on where you sleep. A bedspace in a shared room in Deira, Karama, Bur Dubai or Al Qusais costs AED 600–950 a month with electricity, cooling and wifi included, and a bachelor living that way spends about AED 2,500 a month (₹65,000) with food and transport. A private room in a shared flat brings the month to about AED 4,600 (₹1.2 lakh), and a studio of your own in International City or Al Nahda (AED 41,000–44,000 a year in Bayut’s H1 2026 report) about AED 7,000 (₹1.8 lakh) once the 5% housing fee, DEWA, internet and a nol pass are added.
- What is the monthly cost of living in Dubai for an Indian couple?
- About AED 9,850 a month (₹2.5 lakh) for a couple in a one-bedroom flat in Al Nahda, International City or Karama, where one-bedrooms were advertised at AED 56,000–65,000 a year in 2026: AED 5,000 rent, AED 250 housing fee, AED 450 DEWA, AED 600 internet and phones, AED 1,300 groceries, AED 600 for two nol passes and taxis, AED 300 for the spouse’s insurance and visa renewal, and about AED 1,350 for household things, eating out and clothes. Two salaries of AED 8,000 and AED 6,000 leave about AED 4,150 (₹1.1 lakh) a month.
- What salary do I need to live in Dubai with a family?
- With no income tax, about AED 16,000 a month covers a family of four’s basic Dubai budget with nothing left over; AED 20,000 leaves about AED 4,300 (₹1.1 lakh) to save or send home without a car, and AED 25,000 about AED 7,300 (₹1.9 lakh) with one. A comfortable life, meaning a three-bedroom villa, a car, a yearly trip to India and AED 5,000 saved a month, takes about AED 30,000 in Dubai and AED 21,500 in Sharjah. The legal minimum to sponsor a spouse and children is AED 4,000 a month, or AED 3,000 with accommodation, which is a visa rule, not a budget.
- Is AED 10,000 a good salary in Dubai for an Indian?
- For a single person, yes: AED 10,000 tax-free covers a studio in International City or Al Nahda with about AED 3,000 (₹78,000) left each month, or a room in a shared flat with about AED 5,400 (₹1.4 lakh) left. For a couple it covers a one-bedroom with little to spare. For a family of four it does not cover Dubai: the budget is about AED 15,700, so a family on AED 10,000 lives in Sharjah or Ajman, shares a flat, or keeps the children at school in India. Numbeo’s users put the average Dubai take-home pay at AED 13,111 a month in October 2026.
- What is the cost of living in Abu Dhabi for an Indian family?
- About AED 15,500 a month (₹4 lakh) in October 2026 for a family of four in a two-bedroom in Mohammed Bin Zayed City or Musaffah, with a car and two children at a CBSE school. Rents are close to Dubai’s: Bayut’s H1 2026 report put a one-bedroom in Khalifa City at AED 59,000 a year and a two-bedroom at AED 104,000, and studios in Mohammed Bin Zayed City were about AED 34,000. The municipality fee is 5% of the rent on the utility bill. The difference is that Abu Dhabi’s law makes the employer enrol the employee’s wife and three children under 18 in health insurance, and several CBSE schools in Musaffah and on Muroor Street list fees from about AED 5,800–9,000 a year.
- Is Sharjah cheaper than Dubai for an Indian family?
- On rent and schools, yes: Bayut’s figures reported in October 2026 put average asking rents at AED 46,896 a year in Al Nahda and AED 49,600 in Al Taawun across all flat sizes, against AED 72,000–82,000 for a two-bedroom in Dubai’s Al Nahda or International City, and Sharjah’s Indian schools charge a typical AED 7,200 a year. But a parent who drives to Dubai every day spends about AED 2,200 a month on the car, petrol and Salik, so a family of four comes to about AED 14,300 in Sharjah against AED 15,700 in Dubai without a car. Sharjah wins clearly when both jobs are in Sharjah, Ajman or northern Dubai, at about AED 12,500.
- How much are Indian CBSE school fees in Dubai and Abu Dhabi in 2026–27?
- In Dubai, KHDA-regulated fees at Very Good-rated Indian schools run from AED 7,389 a year (GEMS Our Own Indian School, KG1) to about AED 15,800 (Delhi Private School, Grade 12), with dearer schools such as The Millennium School at AED 18,308–26,906 and GEMS Modern Academy at AED 29,000–69,900; the Indian-curriculum average is about AED 14,000, and Dubai froze all private school fees for 2026–27. In Abu Dhabi, listed CBSE fees start at about AED 5,845–16,220 (The Model School in Musaffah to Bright Riders in Mohammed Bin Zayed City), and in Sharjah the typical Indian-curriculum fee is AED 7,200. Add 15–30% for registration, books and uniforms, and AED 3,500–9,000 a year a child for the school bus.
- Do I have to pay for my family’s health insurance in Dubai?
- In Dubai, usually yes: the law makes the employer insure the employee and makes the sponsor, normally you, responsible for insuring the spouse and children on your visa, unless your contract includes family cover. In Abu Dhabi the employer must enrol the employee’s wife and three children under 18. In Sharjah and the northern emirates every private-sector worker has needed insurance since 1 January 2025, with a basic national plan at AED 320 a year that family members can buy at the same price. A Dubai plan with a usable network for a dependant costs roughly AED 1,200–2,500 a year (estimate); budget about AED 400 a month for a spouse and two children with co-payments.
- What is the 5% housing fee on a DEWA bill?
- It is Dubai Municipality’s housing fee: tenants pay 5% of their annual rent, divided into twelve and added to the monthly DEWA electricity and water bill. On a AED 75,000 two-bedroom that is AED 312.50 a month, on a AED 42,000 studio AED 175. Abu Dhabi charges a municipality fee that u.ae gives as 5% of the rent or the rental index, whichever is higher, on the water and electricity bill (older guides say 3%, so confirm on TAMM), and Sharjah charges a one-off attestation fee of 4% of the annual rent on the lease instead.
- How much money should I bring to move to Dubai with a family?
- About AED 55,000–83,000 (₹14–21 lakh) for a family of four renting a AED 75,000 two-bedroom on four cheques and paying its own family visas: AED 18,750 for the first rent cheque, AED 3,750 deposit, AED 3,940 agency commission with VAT, about AED 2,350 for Ejari and the DEWA deposit, AED 10,500–19,500 for three residence visas, AED 4,000–9,000 for a hotel apartment while you search, AED 5,000–12,000 of furniture, and school registration, uniforms and flights. If the employer pays the visas and flights it falls to about AED 42,000–59,000 (₹11–15 lakh). A single professional taking a studio needs about AED 20,000–25,000.
- Do NRIs living in the UAE pay income tax in India?
- Only on Indian income. The UAE taxes no salary and India does not tax a non-resident’s foreign earnings, so a UAE salary is taxed nowhere. You stay non-resident if you spend fewer than 182 days in India in the financial year; if your Indian income exceeds ₹15 lakh, 120 days plus 365 days over the previous four years makes you resident but not ordinarily resident, and an Indian citizen with that much Indian income who is liable to tax nowhere else is a deemed RNOR. Indian rent, capital gains and NRO interest stay taxable in India; NRE interest is exempt while you are non-resident.
- How much do Indian groceries cost in Dubai?
- On Carrefour UAE’s online shop on 17 October 2026, 10 kg of Aashirvaad atta was AED 53.79 (supermarket chakki atta AED 25–36), 5 kg of India Gate Super basmati AED 52.79, 5 kg of Sona Masuri AED 23.29 on offer, 1 kg of toor dal AED 8.99–15.99, a litre of Amul ghee AED 57.17 and 1 kg of paneer AED 36.49; Numbeo’s users put milk at AED 6.65 a litre and onions at AED 3.58 a kilo. A vegetarian family of four cooking at home spends about AED 1,500 a month on food and AED 1,800–2,200 with snacks, sweets and takeaways; Lulu’s and Union Coop’s weekly offers are worth checking against these prices.
- What is the cost of living in Dubai for a family of three?
- About AED 13,400 a month (₹3.5 lakh) for two adults and one school-age child in a two-bedroom in Al Nahda or International City without a car: the family-of-four budget less one child’s fees, bus, books, insurance, visa and food. If the child is under four and both parents work, a full-day nursery averages about AED 3,156 a month in Dubai (Numbeo, October 2026), which takes the month to about AED 15,000 (₹3.9 lakh), almost as much as a family of four with two children at school.
