The Ganesh temple of Tamil La Chapelle, founded in 1985 and the first Hindu temple in France, keeps Dipavali — the festival of lights and of the goddess Lakshmi — with pujas through the day (8am to 7pm in its last published festival calendar). It is open to everyone, every day from 8.30am to 8pm, with ceremonies at 10am, noon and 6.30pm; metro La Chapelle, Marx Dormoy or Gare du Nord.

The Global Indian Organisation of France’s dinner and show by the Opéra: Bollywood performances as guests arrive from 5pm, speeches by its president with India’s ambassador and a minister billed, then dinner, dance and a fashion show, and a DJ from 10pm.

The Maison de l’Inde at the Cité universitaire holds its free Diwali evening in October or November (the tourist office’s agenda says 31 October), and the France Telugu Association’s Dasara, Bathukamma and Diwali day is there on Sunday 1 November. Maharashtra Mandal France’s free Anand Bazar and gala are in Suresnes on 7 November, the GIO dinner gala at the InterContinental on 14 November, and on Deepavali itself the Tamil families of La Chapelle go to the Ganesh temple on the rue Pajol.

If it is your first one

  • Book restaurant tables two weeks ahead — the Diwali weekend fills every Indian restaurant in town.
  • Check local fireworks rules before buying any; most European towns restrict them to New Year.
  • Sweets (mithai) can be ordered from Indian grocers a week ahead; many deliver nationwide.
  • The big city events sell tickets in advance and sell out; children under a certain age are usually free.
