Hindu temples and gurdwaras in France

The Hindu temple most people in France mean is the Sri Manicka Vinayakar Alayam (Temple Ganesh) at 17 rue Pajol in La Chapelle, Paris, open daily 08:30–20:00. The newest is the BAPS Swaminarayan mandir at Bussy-Saint-Georges, 30 km east of Paris, consecrated on 6 September 2026 and open every day. ISKCON’s Paris temple is in Sarcelles (Sunday gathering from 17:00), and the Sikh gurdwaras of the Paris region are at Bobigny, Le Bourget and Bondy. Outside the Paris region we could confirm the Shiva temple in Villeurbanne near Lyon, ISKCON’s New Mayapur in the Indre, and the Tamil temples of Réunion, Guadeloupe and Martinique, which are French overseas departments.

La Chapelle is the Tamil quarter and the Ganesh temple is its centre. Wikipedia’s register of Hindu temples in France and volunteer-compiled lists name other Tamil kovils in the 10th, 18th and 19th arrondissements, among them an Ayyappan temple near Marx Dormoy and a Vishwanath temple on rue des Petites Écuries; we could confirm only the two below.

Correct or add

The département with the most India-born residents in France (8,566 at the 2021 census, INSEE) and most of the Paris region’s gurdwaras. Wikipedia’s register also names a Tamil temple on avenue de la Division-Leclerc in Bobigny, but the only association we found registered at that address is a church, so it is not listed.

Wikipedia places a gurdwara of this name in Bondy, and the World Gurudwaras directory gives “56 Rte d’Aulnay” without a town; route d’Aulnay is a street in Bondy, so the address is given on that reading. We found no site, timetable or recent report, so confirm before travelling.

Many are open to worshippers only, or to visitors outside ceremonies, and none of those below publishes a timetable. The Ville de Saint-André holds the 37th Dipavali from 11 to 15 November 2026, with a parade on 14 November.

Also worth knowing

Most Hindu temples in the Paris region are Tamil, built by Sri Lankan refugees and by Tamils from Puducherry and Tamil Nadu: INSEE’s 2023 estimate counts 55,000 Sri Lanka-born residents against 53,000 India-born. Poojas run at fixed hours during the day, shoes come off at the door and several temples ask visitors not to photograph inside. The mainland temples are association-run places in ordinary buildings; the BAPS mandir at Bussy-Saint-Georges, consecrated on 6 September 2026, is the first built in a traditional style.

Diwali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026 and is not a public holiday in France. Tamil families keep Deepavali on the morning of Naraka Chaturdashi, and India’s and Sri Lanka’s calendars put it on 8 November, though a panchang computed for Paris puts that dawn on Saturday 7 November; ask your temple which day it keeps. On Réunion the town of Saint-André holds the 37th Dipavali from 11 to 15 November 2026. Gurdwaras mark Bandi Chhor Divas on the same days; ask at the one nearest you.

The Fête de Ganesh procession leaves the Ganesh temple on the rue Pajol on the last Sunday of August (30 August in 2026, about 11:00 to 15:00) and is held subject to the Préfecture’s authorisation, so confirm the date with the temple in August; if the pattern holds the next is Sunday 29 August 2027. The Vaisakhi procession leaves the Bobigny gurdwara in April (19 April in 2026); the 2027 date was not announced.

Every gurdwara serves langar, and visitors cover their heads and remove shoes. Ministry of Culture records put the Franco-Sikh community of Île-de-France at 10,000 to 15,000 people. Directories also list a Sant Baba Prem Singh gurdwara in La Courneuve, a Guru Ravidass gurdwara and a Darbar Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji on chemin de Groslay; we could not pin down a town, address or recent report for them, so they are not listed. For a pandit for a house puja, a naming ceremony or a wedding, ask at the Ganesh temple in Paris, the BAPS mandir, ISKCON in Sarcelles or the Villeurbanne temple.

Where the list is thin: we could not confirm a Hindu temple or gurdwara in Marseille, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Montpellier or Strasbourg, and Indian associations there hire halls for Diwali. In Strasbourg the Bhakti Mandir association says it hires a room from a parish and wants a place of its own. For these cities the nearest confirmed temples are in Paris and Lyon. Not listed on Réunion: the Temple du Gol in Saint-Louis, the Temple de l’Union in Bras-Panon and the Temple tamoul de Bois Rouge, for which we found no street address; on Martinique the Moulin l’Étang temple at Basse-Pointe held a Mariamman festival in May 2024 but we found no address.

Can visitors enter the Tamil temples on Réunion and the Antilles?
Often only the outside. The Kalikambal kovil in Saint-Denis is open to worshippers only, the Petit Bazar temple’s outer enclosure is generally free but access can be limited during ceremonies, and the Changy temple in Guadeloupe is seen from outside because the interior is for worshippers.
When is Diwali 2026 in France and where can I celebrate it?
Diwali is Sunday 8 November 2026, not a public holiday. Ask the Ganesh temple in Paris and your nearest gurdwara which day they keep; on Réunion the Ville de Saint-André holds the 37th Dipavali from 11 to 15 November 2026, with a parade on 14 November.
