Indian businesses and services in Stockholm, Sweden

Most of Stockholm's Indian residents arrived within the last two decades, many of them to work in telecoms, software and engineering, and the community's map follows those jobs. Stockholm County is home to a large share of Sweden's Indian-born residents, many of them IT engineers. Kista, in the north-west of the city, is Sweden's best-known technology district, and Ericsson moved its headquarters there in 2003. It is on the blue tunnelbana line, a direct ride from T-Centralen.

Indian grocery stores are found across the city and suburbs rather than on one street, and South Asian staples are also widely sold in Middle Eastern and Asian food shops in the northern and southern suburbs. Students at KTH, Stockholm University and Karolinska Institutet form another strand of the community, many of them living in student housing spread around the region.

Hindu, Sikh and ISKCON communities all have places of worship in the Stockholm area, generally in modest premises, and the many regional associations hold their own Diwali, Pongal, Onam, Durga Puja and Holi events, typically in rented halls on the weekend closest to the date. Newcomers should know that almost every part of Swedish life, from opening a bank account to registering with a health centre, runs through the personnummer issued by the Swedish Tax Agency, so applying for one early makes everything else easier.
