Hindu temples, gurdwaras and Jain temples in the United Kingdom

The Hindu temple most people mean in the UK is the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Neasden, north-west London (usually open 09:00–18:00 daily); ISKCON’s Bhaktivedanta Manor near Watford and the Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple at Tividale near Birmingham draw worshippers from across the country. The gurdwaras to know are Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Southall, which holds 3,000, and Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick, which calls itself the UK’s largest Sikh place of worship. Jain temples include the Oshwal Centre at Northaw in Hertfordshire and the Jain Centre in Leicester. Also worth knowing

Take your shoes off at the door of every mandir and gurdwara. In a gurdwara, cover your head, sit on the floor with the congregation and bring no tobacco, alcohol or meat; the langar is always vegetarian. At Hindu temples dress modestly: BAPS’s Manchester mandir lists a dress code that covers the shoulders, chest, navel and upper arms and keeps the legs covered below the knee, and does not allow photography inside.

Hours are given only as each place publishes them, and many change on festival days — Navratri, Diwali, Janmashtami, Vaisakhi and Guru Nanak’s birthday — when queues are long and parking is scarce. Bhaktivedanta Manor asks for entry tickets only on major festivals. Where an entry here shows no hours, the place publishes none that we could find; it does not mean the place is shut, so ring or message before a first visit.

For a house puja, naming ceremony, wedding or funeral, ask at the temple office. The Highgate Hill Murugan Temple offers home priest services, and Hindu Council UK’s directory also records priest bodies in Leicester, Harrow and Newcastle upon Tyne.

Every gurdwara serves langar, a free vegetarian meal that anyone may eat after covering their head. Southall’s serves seven days a week, Guru Har Rai Sahib in West Bromwich runs a free kitchen for all visitors, Leicester’s Holy Bones serves from midday, and SikhiWiki records the Soho Road gurdwara in Handsworth as serving round the clock.

This is not every temple in the country. Hindu Council UK’s directory and the Hindu Bookshop’s list also record mandirs in Derby, Sheffield, Huddersfield, Southampton, Portsmouth, Preston, Peterborough, Northampton, Wellingborough, Loughborough, Newcastle, Liverpool, Swansea and elsewhere, and there are more gurdwaras in Southall, Bradford, Derby, Walsall, Bristol and Bedford. The Institute of Jainology also lists Jain temples in Harrow, Wealdstone and Bushey. Cultural associations that only hire a hall are left out, and the council’s own address list is out of date in places — it still gives Neasden’s old address on Brentfield Road — so we used each temple’s own site wherever it has one.

Where is the Neasden Temple and when is it open?
The BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is on Pramukh Swami Road, Neasden, London NW10 8HW. It is usually open 09:00–18:00 every day, including bank holidays; admission is free and the evening arti is webcast live from 18:35 to 19:20.
Which is the biggest gurdwara in the UK?
Guru Nanak Gurdwara in Smethwick, at 130 High Street, calls itself the UK’s largest Sikh place of worship; it has been open since 1961 in a former church. In London, Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Southall, opened in 2003, holds 3,000 worshippers.
Is there a Hindu temple in Leicester?
Yes, several: Shree Sanatan Mandir on Weymouth Street, the BAPS mandir on Gipsy Lane, the Jalaram mandir on Narborough Road, ISKCON on Granby Street (open every morning and evening) and the Tamil Siva Murugan Temple on Barkby Road. Leicester also has the Jain Centre on Oxford Street and gurdwaras on Holy Bones and East Park Road.
When is the Balaji temple near Birmingham open?
The Shri Venkateswara (Balaji) Temple at 101 Dudley Road East, Tividale, is open 09:00–13:00 and 17:00–21:00 on weekdays and 09:00–14:30 and 16:00–21:00 at weekends and on bank holidays; it closes at 20:30 from November to March.
Where is the ISKCON temple in London, and how do I get to Bhaktivedanta Manor?
ISKCON London is at 10 Soho Street, W1D 3DL, open daily 04:30–21:30. Bhaktivedanta Manor is on Hilfield Lane, Aldenham, Watford WD25 8EZ, and is open to visitors 10:00–13:00 and 16:00–19:30 Monday to Saturday and 10:00–19:30 on Sundays and bank holidays.
Where are the Jain temples in the UK?
The Oshwal Centre’s Jain temple is at Coopers Lane Road, Northaw, Hertfordshire EN6 4DG, and the Jain Centre Leicester at 32 Oxford Street, which calls itself the first Jain temple outside India. The Institute of Jainology also lists temples in Harrow, Wealdstone and Bushey, and a Jain shrine inside the Leeds Hindu Mandir.
Can anyone eat langar at a gurdwara?
Yes. Langar is a free vegetarian meal served to everyone, whatever their faith. Cover your head, take your shoes off and sit on the floor to eat; Southall’s gurdwara serves it seven days a week.
Is there a Hindu temple in Edinburgh or Glasgow?
